Hey great video. Honestly looking at all them parts when taking that monster apart gives me chills. When I was 20 years old with no money, I had to do a clutch on a 5 speed Mazda. It was fix it or no car for me. I prayed big time and with gods help it took me 3 weeks to replace the clutch. Back then I had no mechanical inclination, but I did it. I felt so good afterwards. It still brings tears to my eyes. This monster 4L60E is very complicated for me, but I will give it a go and pray for a good result. Thanks for the video friend.
I just sat through your entire teardown and rebuild videos of the 60e and this one. I was scared to death of them. But after seeing your video set, it doesn't look bad at all. Thank you for your time to teach us.
the other videos seem to do much more than necessary. all I want to do is replace the 3-4 clutch pack and piston, other videos give me the impression I have to do a complete disassembly.
Well Jimmy, we did it. Thanks a million, actually $1938.00, because that is what I actually saved by ordering your basic rebuild kit plus your additional recommendations (drive shell and a few other items). The local transmission shop wanted $2373.00 CAD and your parts with shipping to Canada and taxes was $435.00 CAD (not including fluids). This was the first time I did a tranny rebuild, and with your video's and excellent technical support line it made it a lot easier than anticipated. The hardest part that I encountered was the lip seals in the reverse input clutch housing. I ended up ruining the first set. I picked up another set at the local gm dealer ($12) and found it easier to use a bright light to shine it down along the piston to see where the seal was hanging up and then gently tuck it in at that point with the feeler gauge you recommended. Second time around was a snap compared to the first try. I had a couple other minor issues, but with the online video's it made it easy to go back and review, not to mention the few calls I made to your help line, and this put us right back on track. Thanks again Jimmy, from Noel in Canada.
I read 3 books, a lot of blogs from Google and watched every 4L60e video on youtube. I reuse my old reverse lip seal because the new one wouldn't go n. It was a 96 4x4 Tahoe with 285,000 miles that had no engine braking and slipping going to 2nd and 3rd gear but only at heavy throttle. The band was fine and the 3-4 clutches had normal wear. The problem was the forward clutches was burnt. The 96 aluminum forward clutch piston was cracked and loosing pressure. I upgraded to a use 99 steel forward clutch housing. It's been 18 months and 15,000 miles.
After reviewing your tutorial over the 4L60E rebuild for roughly 2 weeks I decided to tackle mine. Prolly watched each video at least twice and a few even more. I had severely burnt the frictions in the 3-4 clutch pack, broken rear output ring gear teeth that chewed up it's planetary, as well as basically overrun the entire hydromatic system with both chunks of gear teeth and lots of debris from frictions and steel flake. You sir are very organized and meticulous. Very precise and clear instructions along with explanations and examples. Thanks to your video production along with a few technical guides I am stoked to inform that having never began to consider anything transmission related. I have successfully in my first attempt 💯% broke down, cleaned, inspected throughout and replaced all broken &\or suspect components and reinstalled a badass New to me 4L60E with some upgrades. She's shifting better than ever and stronger feeling torque then prior without a doubt. Such an amazing personal victory, my hats off to you and your team. For nearly $800 I'm cruising a 2800$ 4L60E in my 04' Yukon! Many thanks!
Sir, thank you for your willingness to share with us the problems that most affect our transmissions. You have saved me a lot of expense. My mind was spinning in circles wondering why I was having the problem that you spoke about. My problem is number "3" You expressed all three symptoms exactly as they have occurred in my Astro Van Transmission. Mine is the TCC. I received all the three issues as described. I changed out all the kick-down solenoids anyway. Problem still there. Then I found your video. PROBLEM SOLVED. Thanks greatly. Sincerely, Kerry Smythe
I have a 93 astro van was yours doing a hard shift from 1-2? I also replaced the solenoids, 1-2 and EPC even the TPS sensor and Servo. Did yours also have a little bit of slippage? I'm going to try this soon, BUT before I do that wanted to ask that when you removed the valve body did any of those track balls off? I've hard some of those have to be in a specific area. I'm scared if I drop it that I'm not gonna be able to catch one of them and not know where to put them. I heard there's like 8 of them. Let me know when you get a chance.
Make sure you have a big pan underneath to catch any falling parts along with the fluid. Yes, there are usually 7 check balls contained in the part of the valve body you remove and another one once you take the separator plate off. (There are also one or two "captured" in the case side of the body although they shouldn't fall out - usually) Although you don't have to remove the valve body separator plate to do the TCC valve in the valve body, I highly recommend doing it because you will likely find some of the check balls have worn into the plate. I recommend replacing the plate and gaskets but make sure you get the specific plate for your model of 4L60e - plates for '93 are different than for other years. Make sure you know where the checkballs go when you put it back together! Use some assembly goo to keep them in place when you re-assemble. Watch lots of videos on this rebuild before you attempt it! Also look for Hiram Gutierrez's Automatic Transmission TH-cam channel for another great teacher.
Excellent! My 4L60E has a very hard shift into 2nd and slips when shifting into 3rd at moderate revs. Now I know why (problems 1 & 3). Thanks for a professional and informative video!
This video is top shelf! This is without a doubt the best i have seen on TH-cam. Everything about it is perfect. Thank you for speaking clear and concise and at perfect volume. That's a big issue with me. I only have ¼ of my hearing
i hate driving a car with automatic transmission, but since I am a mechanic, I see you are doing great work fixing transmissions. keep up the good work.
i have a question my transmission is having the 3rd problem were it shifts hard in 1st to 2nd gear were can i get that spring in the video the one you replaced in the valve body ?
Watched this series of videos when they first came out and rebuilt my 4l60 myself, also bought some of the parts from him, been a couple years and it's still running fine. Thanks very much!!
I just sat through this tutorial and all I have to say is thank you. This is by far the best most descriptive video I have ever watched. in just a few minutes all I needed to know was explained.
I wish this guy made all repair videos he is very precise and to the point. Most videos skip parks. I am a back yard or drive way mechanic and work on my own vehicle, so I like things real simple
I have a 4l60e that shifts fine when it's cold but after 10 or so minutes when I leave from a stoplight, it will be stuck in 3rd, so I try to put it in 1st & shift through manually after stopping again, but can only get 2nd then 3rd again, no fourth gear at all. Either way, it's the same each time, all 4 gears work fine until it has a few miles on it. It was just rebuilt last summer, at least that's what I thought I was paying for.
Simple straight forward information with good visual aids. Not full of slowly removing bolts and imparting personal opinions while I watch. Just good solid info. A+
I have a 99 Tahoe. No major problems until it wouldnt go into reverse at 100,000 miles. Had it rebuilt and it drives great once again. Now at 106,000 miles and still going great.
WOW! That video was not only incredibly informative, but also the best video as far as none of the NONSENSE the others put in theirs. Thank you so much for both! 99% of these videos people think they’re a successful comic. Everyone seems to think we want to hear them talk. And the music! Not only don’t we want music, but we definitely don’t want music so loud we can’t hear the actual content. Then there’s the 45 minute introduction. All I can say is dousche-bag to that!
wowI have been searching for repair and rebuild videos for about two weeks now and this is absolutely the best one so far it makes a difference when you know the name of the parts
4L60E is a very durable transmission as far a the cost to repair, rebuild vs how many applications it's used in. On average I overhaul 3-4 a week and have for a dozen or so years. Quickest I've assembled one once it's been properly hot tanked and cleaned is 1 hour 3 minute that's including all clutch pistons including the Low Reverse.
Thank you thank you once again I find this channel to be so exciting just to learn new ways on fixing my trucks. I have I think six or seven Chevy avalanche all the way from 2002 to 2005 I don’t know why but I love those trucks they look so cool I’ve always wanted one when they came out brand new but I could not afford $70,000 that’s what they were valued at that time now if you shop around pretty good you can pick up a pretty decent Chevy avalanche for about $3000 to $6000 which I have purchased. But I know that three of them need a transmission overhaul and I find out that people are selling these next to nothing when the transmission goes out because most shops are asking about $3000-$4000 just to rebuild it and if I can learn how to rebuild them I can get some that are in excellent shape next to nothing. So thank you so much and God bless you and your family and friends and don’t forget Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior is coming back to this earth very soon you can actually see the pre-tribulation times happening all around the world. So my brother please repent so one day you and I can meet in heaven and talk about transmission repairs thank you once again and stay safe we live in a crazy world now and it’s going to get a lot worse. God loves you Jesus loves you and my brother I love you as my brother take care see you soon ✝️✝️✝️🇺🇸
Great, clean video. That’s exactly what I am looking for. Reasons and results are clearly explained. I have the same problem with the second. Now I understand what part of transmission makes it. Thank you very much.
You Sir are a genius. I have never seen such a smooth, easy-to-follow, informative instructional video in my life! You just earned yourself a new subscriber.
I say we take the engineers who designed this thing and hang em in town square we can all throw broken clutch plates, faulty drive shells and fried tcc regulators at them.
jay blue my tranny is slamming into second, gonna have to try that long spring trick. If that doesn't work I'm gonna have to rebuild the old thing. 93 GMC Sierra, which is soon to be bagged and dragged once the tranny is shifting proper.
I have a question. I have a 1994 Chevy Silverado 1500 series truck with 235,000 mi on the original engine and transmission. Like a dummy I thought I would change the transmission fluid and do my truck a favor. prior to changing the fluid, the truck/transmission shifted flawlessly but, the fluid clearly needed changing, NOW my transmission slips in first gear and slips upon shifting in all gears. Is does this mean my transmission is FRIED or can I adjust something to bring it back to its previous condition?. This is the first vehicle I have ever owned that has an automatic transmission and are not familiar whatsoever with these transmissions.
removing the old trans fluid, which probably had fine particulates in it, gave the worn clutches enough friction to function. adding the new transmission fluid (which has detergents and such) probably scrubbed your worn clutches clean, thus making them start to slip. i think thats what causes it, im not a mechanic man lol and probably why its important to change the fluid and filter like every 30-40k miles to make sure all the components wear correctly with well performing fluid thats not burnt up or has any contamination.... or never do it and wait until it needs to be serviced/rebuilt lol
Yes the builder did add a heavy duty driveshell and a corvette accumulator. Thanks for your videos they are very good. If I HAD KNOWN ABOUT YOUR VIDEOS I would have rebuilt the transmission myself.
ah shit I dont think Ill ever be able to wrap my head around an automatic transmission. Excellent video though, to the point, concise, clear, and no going off track. Beautifully done.
I used the teckpak fitzall tcc valve repair. Fixed it from going in and out of od and fixed hard 2nd gear shifts. Been a few years now and still works.
Hey man, i have an 02 with the 5.3L 4x4, and mine just started slipping out of the blue. Are you gonna rebuild yours yourself and if so i would like to stay in touch with you and find out what rebuild kit you purchased and if you succeded in doing it. Is yours 4x4?
@@Vincent-Vega24 wow I suck at looking at my notifications. I am not sure, finances are screwed up right now however I did simply change the fluid again even though I did 5k miles ago and it fixed the problem for now. there was a little bit of metal flakes in the filter and the fluid was pretty dark. The slipping has fully gone away.
@@James_R_ I just bought enough fluid to change it all out and i bought a new filter and gasket. Im gonna try that out before i do anything else but i do want to have some kind of back up in case it does it again. Thanks for getting back to me!!
Jimmy I really appreciate for your help I replaced it the accumulator housing And the problem in my transmission is solved .1993 suburban it was shifting so Hard from 1-2 and now is shifting good So Thank you very much for your help
what a great series transmission bench produces , well thought out, and very detailed information , i assembles my 700r4 trans using these videos exclusively great job and thank you
this was a perfect video for these transmissions , wish you lived close to answer, why one would act like its being held back when shifting to reverse and making a clinking noise , thinking it could be #2 problem...
Well done.Really understand the walk through with the narrative done. And i as well have the dreaded No 3rd gear. And you just helped me out learn something new today. Thanks
I appreciate you dearly for this video I was having a problem with my transmission after it ran low on fluid it stopped going to 3rd and 4th gear I will only get first and second so now I know what to look for thank you
Had a '97 Jimmy with that 1870 issue, no TCC lockup, hard shifts, CE light on, would only do it after you've driven a while as everything will reset will an ignition cycle (when you park and shut it off everything resets and the whole issue starts over again). The issue is the aluminum bore wears and that piston gets stuck. The ECM calls for TCC lockup and "assumes" that the piston shifts as commanded even though it didn't. The ECM then detects (thru rpm vs VSS) variance in input/output shaft speed (because the TCC isn't locked though it "assumed" it is) and assumes instead that the clutch pack must be slipping, hence it ramps up line pressures and you get the hard shits. Found a shop on eBay that rebuilds the valve bodies with this kit installed and sells them under exchange. Was an easy install, took a couple hours laying on my back, better than new since the new kit (I'm pretty sure) includes a steel wear sleeve for the piston so it really shouldn't ever wear out again. Really is a common problem and really is an easy fix!
Very good explanation ...Thanks ! I put the " Corvette " servo, the Sonnax 1-2 pin-less accumulator piston, and a 11" x 9" Fin & Plate Transmission cooler ....230k on my 2001 Silverado 5.3 LS works great...!
Excellent video! I just purchased a Beast sun shell, a rebuild kit and shift kit to help get the power to the pavement. Wish I could afford the 5 gear planetaries available. My '02 Blazer is laboring uphill and wants to shift down into drive from over-drive, instead of the TCC doing its magic and adjusting the RPM to suit the demand. Can hardly wait to feel it working properly and maybe get better mileage?! These Vortec V6s are no gas misers.
This is how a vid should be made. No BS, no silly music, no talk about the dog or whatever. No bull.

LOL Darn funny
Well lose some weight at 400 pounds stop eating at MC-Ds all the time
You Sir are a genius. I have never seen such a smooth, easy-to-follow, informative instructional video in my life! You just earned yourself a new subscriber.
Great video and awesome advice.
But what could cause 1-2 delay and flare at WOT only.
I need to lift off yhe throttle to get it to change some times?
you ever figure out your problem? I have the same issue. 2002 trailblazer
+Joshua Keith Throttle position sensor believe it or not.
Had me worried but shifts good now
Simple, no bullshit video with easy to understand and easy how to's, thank you, very much for this! I wish all youtube how to's were this good!!!
I say we take the engineers who designed this thing and hang em in town square we can all throw broken clutch plates, faulty drive shells and fried tcc regulators at them.
things are invented and updated and become better. that's how we have cars in the first place. everything has a weakness
Luke Morrison id like to find one of them dam engineers on a dark alley 😀.
jay blue it would be nice, but probably too dark... 😂🍻🤙🏽
DimebaggDaniel right on 😉
jay blue my tranny is slamming into second, gonna have to try that long spring trick. If that doesn't work I'm gonna have to rebuild the old thing. 93 GMC Sierra, which is soon to be bagged and dragged once the tranny is shifting proper.
Also want to thank you. One of the most useful videos I have ever watched.
This is the first vehicle I have ever owned that has an automatic transmission and are not familiar whatsoever with these transmissions.
removing the old trans fluid, which probably had fine particulates in it, gave the worn clutches enough friction to function. adding the new transmission fluid (which has detergents and such) probably scrubbed your worn clutches clean, thus making them start to slip. i think thats what causes it, im not a mechanic man lol and probably why its important to change the fluid and filter like every 30-40k miles to make sure all the components wear correctly with well performing fluid thats not burnt up or has any contamination.... or never do it and wait until it needs to be serviced/rebuilt lol
peter frysz : Thank you for your reply Peter. I kind of figured so.
Kind regards Eric Dee
Eric Dee it dead dude .
Eric Dee ;7
I had 1600 miles on this Pro rebuild, and symptoms of worn TCC regulator valve,
Thank you so much!
Excellent, easy to follow and understand. Thank you sir for sharing your knowledge with us all. 👍🏻✌🏻
Yes the builder did add a heavy duty driveshell and a corvette accumulator. Thanks for your videos they are very good. If I HAD KNOWN ABOUT YOUR VIDEOS I would have rebuilt the transmission myself.
Hello, i am from Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦 , i did overall to my 4l60e transmition depending on your vedios.
Thank you so much 👋
ah shit I dont think Ill ever be able to wrap my head around an automatic transmission. Excellent video though, to the point, concise, clear, and no going off track. Beautifully done.
Good stuff right there. Searching for common problems of newer vehicles is the best thing you can learn .
Thank you sir just popped my first 4l60e about to dive in and tear it down I got no third so you pointed me in the right direction
Awesome video! I'm very thankful for the simple straight forward way you talk and show how to in the video
this helped me so much my 3/4 pack was burned up and a transmission shop was gonna charge me a fortune just too change it now I know how thanks again
Very impressive you took me to directions I did not know as a mechanic you are a great teacher thank you very much for the video
I agree guys. Gets to the point. Very educational. Thank you big help!
Outstanding presentation. Clear, concise, and to the point... Thank you!
Shifting problems 2002 gmc sierra
Excellent video! Clear and simple without any nonsense.
One of the best videos I've ever seen on this transmission, good job!
This, was very well done video. You sir, have a future in automotive education. Keep them coming.
Thank you for getting straight to the point and I'm going to recommend you videos everybody that I talk to
Sir..thanks for teaching us
This video is very helpfull
Please keep it up...and thanks for giving us ur expensive time...

Best of all, this is the video should be made. I am sure he's an expert in this! Thanks sirr!
Awesome video. I've seen each problem in real life. One of my favourite transmissions to work on being a Chevy mechanic of that era.
My 2004 Chevy Express has 290K miles on original transmission. Problem 3 is mine! Thank you!!!
Excellent video. Well prepared, good camera angles, good narrative.
I used the teckpak fitzall tcc valve repair. Fixed it from going in and out of od and fixed hard 2nd gear shifts. Been a few years now and still works.
thank you, my 02 silverado just started slipping. I feel confident that I can fix it myself now.
@@Vincent-Vega24 no problem.
Thanks Heaps , One Off the Best explanatory Vids I have seen , an Nice Narrating Too ..
Jimmy I really appreciate for your help
I replaced it the accumulator housing
And the problem in my transmission is solved .1993 suburban it was shifting so
Hard from 1-2 and now is shifting good
So Thank you very much for your help
Fernando Hernández You're welcome.
c
what a great series transmission bench produces , well thought out, and very detailed information , i assembles my 700r4 trans using these videos exclusively
great job and thank you
this was a perfect video for these transmissions , wish you lived close to answer, why one would act like its being held back when shifting to reverse and making a clinking noise , thinking it could be #2 problem...
Well done.Really understand the walk through with the narrative done. And i as well have the dreaded No 3rd gear. And you just helped me out learn something new today. Thanks
I am letting you know once I replaced my 1-2accumalator with a spring it shifted so much better thank you for your help.
I appreciate you dearly for this video I was having a problem with my transmission after it ran low on fluid it stopped going to 3rd and 4th gear I will only get first and second so now I know what to look for thank you
Great video. Great narration. Well done and easy to follow and understand. Thank you for posting this!
wow . what a great video . direct and straight to the core of problems.i feel smarter already . thank you
You the “Bob Ross” of transmissions. Thank you for video.
No hassle, straight to the point. Love this. Thank you sir.
Damn right that was helpful, saved me over $1500, thank you guys, please keep posting new content.
Excellent. Your video should be the standard by which all others are judged.
I love the video he explains it thoroughly couldn't have said it better myself thanks a lot he's a true professional
You make all this look SO easy! Thanks for posting!
Incredible, finished my transmission following this guy. A1
Excellent video!
