      Apparently the show was initially designed to revolve around Sam! But then the whole idea changed because the writers realized that they it could be a whole lot more and it so became Bartlet centric than Sam Seaborn centric and there was also some disagreement with pay that led to his departure in season 4

      That would be a good spin-off. Both are superb actors that entice the audience into their world.
      There was one thing Aaron Sorkin was well aware of, staring at them in the near future; burnout. TWW shooting schedule was intense and demanded long hours to keep up. That the backdrop required extensive setups pushed the film crews to the brink. It's one reason Sorkin left after season 4. Rob Lowe was willing to remain, but at a substantial increase in pay.
      TWW was one of the most expensive production series made by NBC. It could be done, but I doubt it would be profitable for a network or Netflix / Amazon in today's dollars.

    It's nice to hear somebody appreciate Josh for a change. After Sorkin left the writers somehow forgot that he was supposed to be a 'world-class political mind', or as Pr. Bartlet said: 'Leo, you have a deputy who's, frankly, a lot smarter than you are.' (S2E17 'The Stackhouse Filibuster')

      Lemme tell you a story,
      The first day I became Mayor they sit me down at the desk. Big chair, dark wood, lots of beautiful things. I'm thinking, how much better can it get? There's a knock at the door in the corner of the room. And my Chief of Staff comes walking in carrying this, gorgeous sieve silver bowl, hand chased, it was as big as a birthday cake. "It's from the Union's," he says. So I think it's a present something to commemorate my first day as Mayor. He walks over, puts it on the desk, I look down at it. "It's disgusting," I say "what the hell is this?" He says "What the hell does it look like?" I said "It looks like shit. What do you want me to do with it?" He says, "Eat it." "...Eat it?!" He says, "Yea. You're the Mayor, you gotta eat it." So, ok. It was my first day, my Chief of Staff knows more than I do, so I go at it. And just when I finish, there's a knock at the door. In he walks carrying another silver bowl, and this one from the blinds. "This too!?" He nods. I start eating and when I'm finished there's another knock and another bowl. This one from the Polacks and then after that, one from the Ministers. And do you know what? That's what it is. You're sitting eating shit all day long. Day after day, year after year.
      When I realized that I decided, being a downtown lawyer and seeing my family every night, made for a fine life. Just a fine life.

  • @annoyedbysignups
    @annoyedbysignups 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Way late to this comment party, but to @jimbopumbapigsticks I think it actually makes sense (in as much as it can make sense given that Sam's character was written out for external reasons) for Sam to say these things in this episode and then after the race for the 47th to have left the White House. I think understanding just how difficult it is to "get back in there" would have been disheartening, especially after losing that race. Also, think about the fact that if Sam did return post-race, he'd have gone from being the candidate (and kind of the boss) and aspiring to a position of some considerable authority to being the *deputy* communications director and having limited input on policy making and strategic decisions. That would've had to feel like a gigantic step backwards for him. I think it makes sense that maybe he wanted to figure it out somewhere that he could make his own way. He may not have been enamored with his job at Gage Whitney but he was making partner and doing very, very, very well. Ask anyone in law, to be a partner at a firm like that at Sam's age pre-series is a huge deal. I can see that while he does very much want to get back into the game, he also might want to take the time to build up his own resources and connections - independent of the White House. Plus, in the final season when he does come back, he tells Josh that he's gotten the firm to do a lot of good work. Which implies he's got a lot of power there. I can see Sam not wanting to go back to a more subordinate position, one he'd demonstrably grown out of - whatever his amazement at the chaotic beauty of high office.

      I think that Leo and Bartlet discussed bringing bring Sam as a Senior Consultant with Will taking over as Deputy Communications Director. Basically bring him back in the role that Leo would get later on after he returned to work after his heart attack.

      @@joemckim1183 I don't remember that bit, but I'm not saying it didn't happen. I'm just saying it didn't stick in my mind. I can see the show slightly teasing Sam's return even if it would've been impossible given that Rob Lowe was gone, gone gone. (Well, until season 7).
