      I've always read it slightly different - more like an implicit offer of adoption. Jeb is saying we are all about to go into the wringer, and I will always be there for you as long as you never ever compromise yourself for me.
      Charlie, as usual in his own way is a little further ahead, asserting himself in the triangulation about Zoe in a very older sibling kind of way.

    This scene always brings to mind with me a small touch in the scene when after Mrs. Landingham’s funeral Jed has his moment talking to her “ghost” in the Oval Office and has made his decision on whether or not to run for a second term. He stands on the balcony in the face of a raging storm. Charlie comes out to tell him it’s time to go to the press conference. He wears a raincoat with a hood and holdout one for the president who shrugs it away as the song Brothers in Arms begins. As they walk thru the West Wing collecting the Senior Staff behind, you can see Charlie take his coat off and leave it behind with the President’s. He too faces the storm unafraid like a young Knight following his King into battle.
    It is testament to the acting skills of Dule Hill and Martin Sheen that this minor silent exchange affects me even while typing this.

    It's ironic that when this series aired, the political situation was not great but having people of this kind of integrity in the White House was within imagination. This episode aired in May 2001 and the entire series aired from 99-06. During this time Bill Clinton lied repeatedly about affairs with female staffers and was impeached for it. George Bush won an election thanks to underhanded tactics. And our government, including President Bush, perpetrated the greatest act of gaslighting and lying in the history of the world to justify invading Iraq. If you thought a man of integrity in the White House was within imagination at that time, that just means you weren't paying attention.

And yet, hes able, in monents like this, to be schooled, corrected, and shown a mirror. And he doesnt hold a grudge about it, even though he is someone who holds grudges. To all the cynical folks here saying in a variety of ways that honesty hasn’t ever existed in the Whitehouse, let me just remind you all that in a democratic-republic such as ours, we get the government we deserve; we get the government that most accurately reflects us.
    Contrary to the opinions expressed here, there are in fact, some very good and decent people who serve in public office. Perhaps when they tell you uncomfortable truths that you NEED to hear, you shouldn’t drive them out of office in favor of those people who tell you what you WANT to hear.

    I wishMr Sorkin would reconsider his vow not to write for TV again. I think that a series set in the present centered around Charlie as a successful lawyer working in a political job could be a very interesting and entertaining series with a lot to say about today’s political environment.

      this is a wonderful TV series loaded with great moments, great actors and writing.... how sad it must be to consistently equate real life to an old TV series...I hope you find peace saltydog as the Nation grows...

    • @ursaltydog
      @ursaltydog 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      gyleake: Please save your platitudes of false sympathies for a better ear.. The thing is that we oft forget TV does mirror real life... good, bad and ugly... and we have plenty of ugly right now in our nation.. real and mirrored facing right at us... And the fact that this series mirrored great presidents.. with dents in their armor.. character flaws.. but who truly embodied sympathy and more importantly were able to express empathy with everyday people, is lost on most people today. Ever heard Martin Sheen's take on the WW president? He feels it is a mesh of Kennedy, Carter and Clinton... People who actually tried to do good things for people.. not corporations... And they did not go unscathed for their actions... Remember... our present President is the one caught up with reality-non reality TV... And no, I don't find peace in this nation today for we are being led into oblivion.. The country my father, grandfather and others before him fought for... This is not it...

    • @gyleake
      @gyleake 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a TV show and has absolutely nothing to do with current POTUS. I was being sarcastic vs "false platitudes"... It is funny to me how many of you folks clamor and bitch about the POTUS about things you perceive, yet not a single person who works with the POTUS ever say anything to substantiate these accusations....racism, selfish, etc etc. I would never invite Mr Trump to a B-B-Q but I want him to succeed as POTUS. Wanting the POTUS to fail is like wanting your pilot to fail.....I want to see America great again....if you don't then take your salty ass elsewhere.

    You know, while I acknowledge the great writing, I always felt like Charlie didn't deserve this. "If you lie, you're finished with me". I mean, Charlie had never lied. Why couldn't the President have conveyed the information in a more caring fashion, telling him it was critical that he never lie, no matter what happened.

      This is how a father speaks to a son, a uncle to a nephew or best friend to his best friend. Love, admiration and mutual respect is understood and need not be spoken of. This was a great example of straight talk no chaser. It’s what men do when speaking to other men we love about serious matters.

    West Wing never was a plausible portrayal of politicians, as altruism doesn’t exist in the political world.
    What made it believable at the time was most of the public still had the wool over their eyes and were in the dream where the government worked for them.
    The reality has always been power for power’s sake and the public is just there to fund it.
    But society did it to themselves by allowing politics to be a viable career path instead of a necessary evil.
