Relax, this song was on rotation in the early days of MTV. MTV needed videos to play, so a lot of unknown bands from the UK and other places became famous because they had videos. Videos at the time were just made for the music industry to promote albums. They used to be shown on Don Kirshners Rock Concert and the Midnight Special late at night. For example they would say "Special appearance by the Rolling Stones". You would think they would be on the show and they would play a video of a song from the album Emotion Rescue. MTV just made a channel of those videos. Not every band made videos at the time!!! So MTV needed material.

When we migrated to Australia we had to live in a hotel until we could find a proper place to live. I remember this song being played over and over on the TV. It has always stayed with me.
I was growing up in Nashville TN USA. I heard them in various outlets. In Nashville, in the mid-1980s, we had an AM radio station with a "Rock of the 80s" format. Back when radio stations had overnight staff. So one night I called to ask to hear a Split Enz album. I said I didn't care which one, just that it was Split Enz. Iris. I Wouldn't Dream of It. I Hope I Never. All I want is any and all of those.
if you got to live the 80s music when you were a young teenager like me it was the best time of our lives ,music shows like RTR and radio with pictures where a must watch and especially after watching RWP was the sunday horrors
First time i heard this song, 4 of us, 2 kiwis 1 Aussie and a Yankee boy were travelling from Sydney to Cairns in an old 66 Fairlane. Radio full blast!! It was 1980, and this song came on. Didn't know who it was. Thought it might be a West Coast US band. But loved the song!! In 1980. This song was all over the radio and tv in NZ and AUS! So later found out it was Split Enz!! First heard them in Wellington NZ 1975! Back then, the word around town was, you must see this band! They are different!! - Kind of vaudevillian!! Anyway, by the end of the show. - Nobody wanted to go home!!!
This is one of the first songs I heard on 91X FM San Diego. I think they called it ''New Wave'' or ''Alternative'' or even ''Brit Pop''. I remember thinking this stuff is really good! So why isn't anyone else playing it? I never got a good answer.
This is the year of 2022 and I still love this song today! I have the original single when it first came out.first time seeing the video though.thanks!
This song was released in 1980 and is 44yrs old now, remember seeing this video on MTV. Was 21yrs old when this song was released. The 70's and 80's the days of big hair, fast cars, fast women, and fast guns.
About once or twice a year I go through a Split Enz period and have to listen to this and Six Months in a Leaky boat incessantly. Both songs are on my death list that I want my kids to listen to when I pass to remember me by. Thank you Split Enz for making such fantastic and memorable music ❤️
I love the way you call it a death list, that made me giggle yes I am obsessed with this song also and I never heard it in the 80s..... Just discovered in a couple of years ago and it's one of my all-time favorite songs they are simply incredible
Two months ago, I first stepped foot on New Zealand Aotearoa. I was carrying a lot of emotional baggage. After one jetlag rest day in Auckland, I began to head south in my rented car. I started at 3pm after a long day at the auckland museum being dangerously tired... not the greatest idea lol. Then, I had to deal with huge traffic on Motorway 1 going South which left me agitated oof. Soon, the lanes merged into two, the urban hellscape transformed into beautiful hills and Radio Hauraki played this song from Split enz. I found myself on State Highway 1 in sunny waikato, which to me is insane! I am on the otherside of the world from where I was born, it was Spring again, at the last place in the world I hadn't visited! I was so happy, I was in tears! Meanwhile, the new Maori queen was being crowned on the whenua, which felt like it was carrying me to safety in Taupo, drawing me in as if I was returning home. Such an odd spiritual feeling for someone who studies biochem like me lol. Now I am home, desperately missing New Zealand wanting to come back immediately. This song has set the mood for a vacation that brought me so much adventure and many firsts. It was perhaps the best place I have ever visited. I am saying that as a big time traveler. See you soon Aotearoa! Hope to feel your warmth again ;) I actually could return in a plane immediately. haha

Nothing will ever top 80s music!!!
Truly in a class all by themselves.
Time capsule comes to mind.
Today’s caliber pales in comparison.
You got that right. Especially after living through it. And I'm 56 years old.
1960s music tops 1980s music
80's all the way and all day long! ✌️✌👔🇺🇸
Comments like this just shows that the poster is narrow minded and incapable of getting out of their rut.
One of the best hooks in rock history!
It took me 47 years to discover these band!
Welcome to the 80s era of good music...👍
Where have you been living in a cave.
@@lylesommers1249 no I I was into and still into glam metal
The Finn Brothers..... Extremely talented.......Split Enz ....Great group.....🔥💪👊
if you got to live the 80s music when you were a young teenager like me it was the best time of our lives ,music shows like RTR and radio with pictures where a must watch and especially after watching RWP was the sunday horrors
Agreed it was a spirit of fun and freedom. What happened????
I'm with you on that statement. I'm 59 and "We had it ALL in the 80's."
Agreed!
@@SapphirePl4ysPkxd What happened ? time got away on us
These phones killed it
This song just stays stuck in your head.
I just loved this when it came out. And still do!
Still my favorite song, I just turned 60 in November 2023 ❤❤❤
Boy, you're old..............
This song is so special, I was glad to be be able to appreciate music in the 80's , a decade that was sent from Heaven . Thanks ❤
Hi I recommend a song called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
@@redskies4530 thanks for recommending the mix I'll check it out.have a good one
Love this tune!!!! Heard it when I was about 13 or 14. Just a kid in Catholic school at the time.
I love you all that have found your way here! to one of the the most beloved and underated bands of the early 80s scene! Namesste
You might like a band called The Doublejumps if you like Split Enz
Wow this song has really stood the test of time
A truer statement does not exist here.
It really has! I heard it today and haven’t been able to get it out of my head. I love this song!
At least since 1980
These songs are timeless, for real. Such brilliant songwriting
@@lukeskywalker1840 👍👍
This song was released in 1980 and is 44yrs old now, remember seeing this video on MTV. Was 21yrs old when this song was released.
The 70's and 80's the days of big hair, fast cars, fast women, and fast guns.
This is such a Dr. Jekyll - Mr. Hyde song. I go from creeped out to happy in 3 seconds! What a masterpiece in contrasting styles. I miss the 80's.
It's like something in the Twilight Zone. With the band not moving and then coming to life. Haunting . And so bloody cool
true
That is a great description
It seems to be the vampire theme of the 80s.
OMGGGGGGGGG! I loved this song sooooo much back in the good old days!!! Smiling big right now!!
We wore this album out when I was in college. Such upbeat fun.
What a classic! Brings me back to being a kid when this was released.
Blondie, Flock of Seagulls, Gary Numan, this was THEIR moment, and well deserved
was 16 when this came out, still sounds brilliant
About once or twice a year I go through a Split Enz period and have to listen to this and Six Months in a Leaky boat incessantly. Both songs are on my death list that I want my kids to listen to when I pass to remember me by. Thank you Split Enz for making such fantastic and memorable music ❤️
Never heard the other. I’ll ck it out.
Yep - hey kids. This is real music. Lol
I walk away is their best song.
I love the way you call it a death list, that made me giggle yes I am obsessed with this song also and I never heard it in the 80s..... Just discovered in a couple of years ago and it's one of my all-time favorite songs they are simply incredible
This song takes me back.............great band, great song.................
#1 of the best songs ever!!!😊
The keyboard player cracks me up. He's too much. Great stuff
This is one fantastic, classic song it’s amazing. It never gets old the definition of a classic.
Early MTV was the best. This video is a prime example.
New Wave at its best. The music was already going in a new direction. Excellent song and my favourite song of 1980.
Ah yes! Brings me right back to being 7 years old and watching MTV day & night on my 25inch floor unit Zenith TV!
Those were the days.
I can't even explain why but Tim Finn freaks me out in this vid. Obviously I keep coming back though. Absolute banger.
Gem of a band. Left of centre. Did their own thing. Loved them. Wicked guitar riff. Great keyboards
I listen to this song 10 times in a row, that's good for the year!😊
Two months ago, I first stepped foot on New Zealand Aotearoa. Hope to feel your warmth again ;) I actually could return in a plane immediately. haha
Love the bassline.
One of the best thing to come from the beautiful New Zealand ❤❤ love you forever split enz ❤❤
