It took me many years to fully appreciate this song. It's as haunting and it's catchy and took this band to a whole new level. It was flogged to death on the radio in the 80's, Molly Meldrum said back then this song was one of the greatest. You know what he was correct.
I just feel privileged to have lived in an era with the likes of these Kiwis - Spit Enz - they are at that creative level with the best - even the on the lets love the Beatles list
It is indeed impressive that so many years later he is able to sing in the original key. Most of yesteryear's artists need to tune down half a step or lower. His vocal melodies aren't super high like most the artists in the 70s and 80s. But still... it's nice not to hear a key that is slightly off from the original one. Even those with "tin ears" can often tell that something's not quite right when an artist sings in a lower key than the original.
@@redlabel69 Which 'key', major or minor ? I think you mean 'register', no? I you can sing a half between 3 and 4 and 7 and 8 then you can sing a major 'key' and same for 2 and 3 and between 5 and 6 then you can sing in a minor key. Unless you want to get into more exotic keys, thats about it -the major and minor keys. OK, no doubt you've figured out that I'm kinda messin' with ya. I'm just pointing out how people say that they can sing in this and that key - meaning register or how far up the keyboard they can handle rather than 'key' which just tells ya where the 1/2 steps are. Get it ? And like I said, its not just you, just about EVERYBODY says it but its technically wrong and I like pointing it out from time to time. 🙂
Camaray pub Sydney 1979. Packed, I’m up on a counter at a wall. Splitenz lit lt up for two solid hours. I still remember like it was yesterday. Just wonderful.
I was there..sound relief 2009 to raise money for Black Saturday bushfire victims many famous bands played at this event..hunters and collectors played here too
Grazie per le Emozioni a Noi Concesse....con rispetto e gratitudine oltre al mio plauso alla Vostra Bravura e Professionalità unità a una Tecnica Superlativa! Siete Fantastici! Grazie !
I was 19 in my 69 Mach 1 in 1980 w my gorgeous Girlfriend when this came on and remember even the street. We loved it and it was a wonderful time in my life... Takes me back every time I hear it..
love this, tyvm for posting xx The first time I saw Spilt Enz was on the 80's show Friday's, they had me hooked from the start! Cool sound. Still remember this. Great sound back than..
Wow! Excellent rendition! Proof that you can get old and still deliver, unlike a lot of bands that reform just for the nostalgia dollar and don't deliver. Great look, great mix, great vocals! Very touching to see the two brothers onstage again after all these years (although I know this is 12 years ago - I haven't kept up with their fortunes since I left Aus in 1992)...
Hard to believe that was over 8 years ago, and I do not believe they have performed as Split Enz since. This despite sounding good and playing very well.
Time flies by and yes true, last performance- there was a "possible" recently but it didn't eventuate, saying that request to reunite come in at a regular rate. Lets hope it's not another 8 years till they reform.
I watched the first videos on the first day of MTV. I was 17. I'm sure this one was probably played in the first hour. Such a catchy tune, but I would never admit at the time that I loved that video and song. I was a hard rock kind of guy. But now as I'm in my sixties i freely admit that these guys were the shit. Good to see Tim back on stage with his brother Neil.
Saw Crowded House last night (5/15/23) in downtown Minneapolis. Neil Finn sounded as good on this song as when it came out. Don't Dream its Over, sounded better last night, than any recorded versions. His voice was amazing for a straight hour and a half!
First saw them at a free street concert by 2JJ radio at The Rocks in the shadow of The Sydney Harbor Bridge. I was impressed by their stage antics and knocked out by their musical ability. Still knocked out by their music about 45 years on. Keep Rockin'!
This takes me way back 2 a girl I've lost beautiful song 😥 Awesome bang that ever hit the charts 💙 Awesome bang that ever hit the charts 💙 love this, tyvm for posting xx

This is the coolest. Most people aren’t fortunate enough to be in one good band. Neil is in Split Enz, Crowded House, Fleetwood Mac. There music reminds me of The Rembrandts quirky chords.
When you examine the lyrics dispassionately this song is a little weird. But when you inject the emotions involved in a relationship it makes perfect sense. Cool and fascinating song. And just downright awesome!
one of best songs of the 80s
GD right it is
You nailed it....
Indeed! One of the coolest songs EVER!
Except it was released in the 70s 😂

Molly was ahead of his time with his taste and knowledge. Split Enz were from another dimension in time....
The original MTV video was pretty awesome. I lived the way the picture came to life for the chorus.
He didnt support them initially......
Same
The contrast between the verses and the hook is but one reason this song stands the test of time.
Love X
@Mr Spectacals
.
Neil Finn wrote the two parts separately. A friend had to point out the two actually went together
@@waynekasmar4401 that’s so sick, i never knew that. thanks for sharing

That was freaking outstanding.
They’re playing in the same key as it was recorded. Very impressive!
What, major or minor, or ..... ???

as they say, the boys can still hit the high notes, after all these years.
Brings back the memories of my happy teens and well a bus full of girls going to do sport were singing along to this song as it came on the radio
So cool all these years later seeing this whole band together playing . Pretty cool.
Always loved this song but never fully appreciated the insturmentation before. The bassline is life.
Wow,Neil Finn has really aged well and he sounds just like he did in his heyday...Keep it going Mr.Finn...🎤🎤🎤🎸🎸🎸
Both of them? Tim's standing right next to him.
Neil is a spunk ❤
That just made me happy. Great job lads.
That haunting synth gives me chills!
Neil has always hit the beat, i would spend 6 months in a leaky boat to hear him jam !!
What a memory from early 80's ...and very nice..... twin brother singers
Neil and Tim Finn are not twins. Tim is almost six years older than Neil.
Great song great band,Finn brothers are immensely talented musicians.
Amazing!
The best version of this song. OMG! It's soooooo good!
The first time I saw Spilt Enz was on the 80's show Friday's, they had me hooked from the start!
This is still the only Split Enz song I really know. I remember seeing and loving the video when I saw it on MTV waaaayyy back in the day.
Woh, lots to discover then. This is just one of many one of a kind tracks. Best kiwi band!!!!
Message to my girl and better the devil you know still come up in my brain randomly.

I got you, that's all I want
I won't forget, that's a whole lot
I don't go out, now that you're in
Sometimes we shout, but that's no problem
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lyin'
Look at you, you're a pageant
You're everything, that I've imagined
Something's wrong, I feel uneasy
You show me, tell me you're not teasin'
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lyin'
There's no doubt, not when I'm with you
When I'm without, I stay in my room
Where do you go, I get no answer
You're always out, it gets on my nerves
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes you can tell that I'm not lying
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lyin'
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lying
