When George Harrison is the third song writer in your band, you know your band is good. This song never gets old.
Some people would disagree that he was the third best songwriter
Who said he's the third best, I think it was a 3 way tie..... My Sweet Lord is a top 10 for me and I'm a young 61.

@@alexkagman, the stats clearly show that he was. No shame in that, he was brilliant
@@pattyhaley2949 To be fair, the op wrote "third", not "third best". "Third" can just as easily refer to quantity, and in that respect it's a fact that George was third.

Something mesmerising about girl in yellow.. she not a super model yet something about her portrays true beauty like I’ve never seen before ❤
Perhaps the confidence of a dancer…
People care too much for static looks, they imitate lifeless statues in photographs. She is moving - and skilled so - which I find to be more attractive than posturing
@@nancyfarrington610 no not really, I think it’s her inner beauty, her spirit, her inner soul is reflected as someone in my comments pointed out
She's got that "(Pretty) Girl Next Door" look.
Spiritual
It's a shame that George didn't see this lovely interpretation of one of his best song.
I get the art of the video. Youth wonders about the meaning of life as independence is gained (symbolized by the girl leaving home). Leaving the playground behind she ponders death in the cemetery and celebrates (not fears) its inevitable rapture. Then the inexplicable chemistry erupts as she encounters love. This is true to George Harrison's spirituality.
Spot on.
That is a great take on the video. The song could have been a Beatles song (instead of a solo effort), as GH wrote it while still in the Beatles! Shame it was ignored by McCartney and Lennon
Very thoughtful interpretation!
You're a fuckin dumb ass
Oh, the good old over-interpretation
My wife left me last month, and this song should be making me sad. Instead, somehow, it's giving me hope. Such is the magic of George Harrison.
I totally agree with you about George. I hope you find happiness and love again. This song is very inspirational, I believe, no matter how you interpret it.

Tough to pick just one Beatles song
Agreed, just feeling relaxed snuggled up to my better half when listening to this song just now, this world needs more love just now ❤❤❤❤
He's talking to his God
Lots of symbolism in this video - Leaving home for the first time (shrouded by fog), being off balance and wondering which direction to go (middle of the street on the double yellow lines), forming an open box on her heart, letting go of our childish ways (playground), growing in the sunshine (the garden), dancing even though we are surrounded by death (running pirouette through cemetery), first love then lit by sunlight (forbidden forest), both are wearing yellow and white tops (Yellow is the symbolic meaning of optimism, idealism and hope. White is purity), etc. etc. etc. - WOW!
That's a lot to unpack!
Glad you typed this out: the symbolism seems to be lost on so many of the muppets who negatively comment on this video. They either think she's not a good dancer and/or sexually obsess over her looks
Or maybe in light of what is happening now - Empty playground ( children locked up ) Hand over face and outstretched arm ( mask and keep back ). Empty allotments and falling on autumn leaves ( lack of food and death ) Dancing in front of lines of gravestones ( mass extermination and dancing on our graves ) ! Or maybe I’m just paranoid .
Your insight is greatly appreciated. I was blinded by her beauty and didn't notice. Very interesting though.
Mike F Mike F
Yes, she is gorgeous and I love George’s music.
Twin pillars of freemasonry at the start ? Lots of symbolism and just as many ways to interpret it, depends on where you are coming from really.

Let’s face the fact, all 4 Beatles were brilliant, no one can touch them even after all these years.
You are so right! No one even comes close!
Well then you only new shit music I guess. There a lot of artists and bands that have good song writing similiar to The Beatles. BUT.. What you mean is that no one can copy them. And that's true for sure :)
@@thallrudedjentstorm1756 I think the idea is that it is almost unfeasible for a band to have such varied, influential, and groundbreaking music evolving and being constantly released over a 7 year period.
@@thallrudedjentstorm1756 I’m not saying there aren’t artists and bands out there that write great songs, a lot do.
But the Beatles will go on when other bands have disappeared into the background. As for shit music yeah I’ve listened to bands that produce bad music, I’ve not just spent my life listening to the Beatles, but in my opinion my above comment is true.
like Ringo said recently... every generation discovers the Beatles
This song is fifty years old and timeless.
And Simon Cowell had nothing to do with it which is why it's so fabulous.
I copied the lyrics (all credit given) onto a paper, put the paper under the windshield wiper of "her" car and asked her to marry me that night. 25 years and two kids later she told me, "It just didn't work out" (I looked at her with an look of incredulity and said, "WHAT? Harrison's widow and son, Olivia and Dhani Harrison, held an online competition in which filmmakers were invited to create a video clip for "What Is Life". The winner would receive a $5000 cash prize and their entry would become the official video for the track, appearing on the George Harrison TH-cam channel and other media platforms. In November, Olivia and Dhani selected Brandon Moore of Oakland, California as the winner. Moore's video comprises dance interpretations by Emma Rubinowitz and Esteban Hernandez of the San Francisco Ballet, filmed in the streets and woods of the San Francisco Presidio.
Emma Rubinowitz left San Francisco Ballet in 2019, but Esteban Hernandez still dances there as a Principle.
The dancer's 'dance interpretations' were choreographed by the video's Art Director/Choreographer Dana Genshaft who was at the time a soloist at San Francisco Ballet.
The video scenes are quite close to each other and are located either side of Veterans Boulevard.
The actual location of each scene is -

0:25 Kobbe Avenue, looking towards Upton Avenue
0:41 & 1:14 Fort Scott Community Garden, Wisser Court

Since George was always kept in the background while a Beatle, once they went on their own I believe that George was the best song writer of the bunch. His songs are spiritual and magic; I can listen to them over and over and love them more each time.
I listen this song over and over. Cant help it.
By his own admission, he never had a writing partner and got a late start but in my view, he was responsible for such high quality music and lyrics he eclipsed Lennon/McCartney. What a loss to lose him.
@buzz magister Extremely well put! :)
Esher Demos are the proof. He's my favorite.
Everyone should watch The Beatles: Get Back. It's probably a masterpiece. It details how talented the individual members of the Beatles were - George included, even as the youngest. Yoko Ono didn't break up the Beatles. They broke up because they all had too much creative energy to be contained in one band. Especially after 10 years of ridiculous success.

For those of you who question the message and symbolism of this song, this song is a CELEBRATION of the "gift" of life! When she continues her dance alongside the Cemetary it is NOT meant to be disrespectful of those who have sacrificed their lives, but rather, her Dance is symbolic of FAITH in the reality of LIFE after DEATH! That LIFE TRIUMPHS over Death!!
If someone thinks its disrespectful then they are a nimrod and to dimwitted to comprehend an explanation.
We know what the song is about. I'd suggest that no one actually cares about the video. I'd rather see George himself perform it. The dance is nothing to do with anything. It just is what it is.
@@Beth-ve7ob "It is what it is" ??? how original you are. That's the catch phrase for when you haven't a clue. Video is another facet of the song, just like performers present to you during a live show. Go ahead and prefer a 2 dimensional piece of art. I prefer 3 myself, as do most people.

Both Dancers are World Class the choreographer also from San Francisco Ballet is Dana Genshaft. This video was in it to win it, the director picked first class team to express this music, making it hands down a professional high caliber video you would expect for a musician like George Harrison of legendary fame.
Do you know if it was also filmed in SF?
I immediately thought of ballet, without the stage and costumes. I love the naturalness of it. Very warm.
Just amazing. It is so uplifting. Good job Emma.
I'm from California originally and thought I noticed the scenery to be from around North Bay Area, especially the military cemetery in GG Park. Do you know if it was shot there?
The Presidio of San Francisco.
I'm a sixty year old man and I cry every time I watch this
I know how you feel. I'm a sixty-one-year-old man and experience the same thing watching this. Take care, my brother.
I am 66 (as we're on the subject!) and well remember what George's music meant to me when I was a youngster. Beatles' numbers always recall the top deck of the school bus and the girls from the girls' grammar. Ah, the memories! At the time, here in the UK, this track -- and also George's _If Not For You_ -- seemed to be interpreted more often by Olivia Newton John than by the writer himself. She did a good job with them, I think.
Very emotional song, beautiful words of love
Im a 58 year old lady. it makes me cry too. just to be able to run and jump and be young and healthy would mean so much.
I am 59, and seeing these young people dance to George Harrison's music warms my heart. I saw Mr. Harrison sing this song in 1974. A very fond memory. Can you beat George Harrison, Billy Preston and Ravi Shankar for a first concert?
Beautiful young woman in yellow dress you really bring out more of the beauty in this rock masterpiece.
I don't care about anyone's opinion.
I REALLY liked this.
Bitches love sticks fuck u
Yass someone from the phandom who likes George Harrison
Read above: The gurl is 25.
Oh hell yeah. the song, George tapped into Keith Richards opening riff thing. And the dancer, she's just fantastic
Nobody cares about your opinion either
I cried when John died, but I bawled like baby on the way to work when George's death was announced. Us guitar players tend to be softies.
True ❤️
Gareth Beare Almost everything you’ve said in that comment is completely false. John becomes the most talented solo Beatle just because he was shot? That’s ridiculous. Also George Harrison was not the most musically talented or accomplished. That goes to Paul who could play over 50 instruments
Bless you
Gareth Beare I didn’t misunderstand your point. You worded it wrong. How else can you interpret “That terrible circumstance does automatically elect him by default as the most talented solo Beatle”
George was my favorite Beatle. Wonderful player, who always played what was right for the song. He was a great singer, as well, and had no trouble moving forward after the Beatles broke up.
Fellow guitar player here. It was depressing when he passed, and his passing had more of an affect on me than John Lennons'.
The "you" spoken of in this song is God.
that´s right friend GOD is life
My Sweet Lord.
🕊🌞❤️🔥🥂👏👋😇
This is my favorite George Harrison solo song, and some time ago my daughter Sofia who is studying Communications told me that she had to reproduce a famous video for a class of hers. I suggested this one, and she did and she one first prize in her class. We will be forever connected through it.
That is a wonderful story! Thank you for sharing that. I hope she's proud of her video... and grateful to you for suggesting it!
She now says it will be her wedding day dance song with her dad snif!
My daughter is also a Sofia. Thanks for this comment!
Great
Good for her and you
I wish George knew how thankful I am for him having ever existed.
I never existed in this world at the time time with him...
I have a feeling that he knows
as a child my hands didant open (genectic disorder shorter tendons) but going mad on the beatles and starting a beatles copy band, opened my left hand playing so much,,now its my main hand, even have to mouse wrong handed,i never got the fame i wanted, but i did get the music and learnt that even song writing leads to enlightenment, since witing loves songs we try to come up with the answers and go deep into it,and the answer to love is that we came to life to give it not get our share,,the highest form of love is selflessness our children teach us that,,YNWA
I didn’t exist in the time he was here but I have a feeling he knows. Wherever he is he knows. One day we’ll get to say thank you
@@shipwreckedhannah9345 this made me cry. thank you so much ❤
““The dancer really expressed unbounded joy, and managed to capture the spirit of “What is Life” through movement, which the director captured beautifully.” ~ Olivia and Dhani Harrison
Looked like a mixture of Patti Harrison and Maureen Starkey lol
A great scouser.
She really did do a wonderful job dancing!
My thoughts too, Karen. 👍
it is hard to believe that she is 60+ years old now!!!!
YES STILL AN GROVIE SONG EVEN AFTER SOME 54 YEARS ❤
Excellent choice by Olivia and Dhani Harrison for the video competition to this song. My first impression before any research was that it was made in the U. K., and while watching Emma Rubinowitz dance, I thought of a young Charlotte Rampling(being from California though, I can see plenty of California sunshine after the burning off of morning low clouds upon further review of the shooting sequence). Just a great job all around and I am sure George would have approved.
hueyjmedina0 who is the. guy though
Esteban Hernandez. He and Emma are with the San Francisco Ballet.
It's definitely San Francisco. It was filmed at the Presidio and Golden Gate Park.
Steve F The graveyard looks like Colma to me; I thought the grove of trees at the end was Coyote Point, though it could easily be the Presidio (haven't been there in decades)...
hueyjmedina0 I thought this girl was Harrisons granddaughter. I did check.
God! I miss George Harrison! 😢 RIP George 😇🙏
George was a wise man. He was independent and had a mind of his own. That allowed him to write and sing such good tunes, like this one. Here Come The Sun will not be matched.
Thankyou George for giving me music like this. We still love ya.
There never was,nor will there ever be another one like him. Thank you George Harrison for the beautiful gift of music you gave us !
as is any other human born on this planet. It does not make him special. It will not save his soul. He did not know or trust in Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. He trusted hare Krishna who is dead and in the ground. My Savior, Jesus Christ lives. He rose from the grave on the 3rd day. Happy Easter and Merry Christ mas. 🙂
News flash theres only one god but he has many faces and names no religion is better then the other when people think there god is better then someone elses thats when it all becomes dangerous how many people died in the name of Christianity. Just all around fuckin backwards like your god is my god u
LIL YACHTY IS THIS GENERATONS GEORGE HARRISON, O N G O D!!!
Easily 1 of the e top 10 musicians that's ever lived.
No one comes even close to George - the only person who was instrumental in both the Beatles and Monty Python. Even if all he ever did was financing Life of Brian that would suffice to guarantee his place in eternity.
I love how she purposely combined youthful clumsiness along with moments of professional grace…just wonderful to watch. And the boy chase girl ending absolutely punctuated the realism, yet initial innocence of “What is Life”
♥️
Yes. She and He are both Prima Ballerinas.
Wow. Your critique was as wonderful to read as video was to watch. Well done,!
@@haroldrichards1932 Thank you for the kind words:-)
I felt the same way! Perfectly done and I love the intended awkwardness. Made it so real and beautifully rhythmic.
dear deceased parents. thanks for letting me be born in 1961 - so i could have all this beautiful music to remember then, and now

Imagine the music industry without people like George and the Beatles
Dancing, in youthful exuberance, by the graveyard; extremely poignant message about our small time on this Earth. Superb video...
It always brings tears to my eyes, every time.
I showed this to my wife and told her I'd like to think that is us dancing in the forrest together in an after life no longer burden by age or sickness.

May you both find peace … Hallelujah Hare Krishna
May PLEASE G-d protect you both for only goodness! (From a fellow human in Efrat,Israel)
Blessings to both of you!
Being married (to the same amazing woman) for 35 years,7 children and 21 grandchildren ,my great wish was to be old with her.I told her so often in so many ways how I appreciated her that she evidently understood I wasn't worth the fuss anymore! YET, I thank God for every blessed day of our former 35 year marriage. We don't get signed insurance policies in life.
What an audio visual expression of the beauty and playful innocence of youth. Reminds me when I was young and in love for the first time. Thankyou George..a beautiful aspect of the divine singularity.
Yes special song superb video !
Paul & John recognized George's guitar talent IMMEDIATELY, hiring him as the LEAD guitarist when he was only 15. It took a while for them to see he had WRITING talent as well, but they DID.
You do know that Paul knew George before he met John?
George joined the Quarrymen on 6 February 1958 - he was not quite 15 (his birthday is at the end of the month). Paul recognised George's talent as a guitarist immediately and introduced him to John. George did become a superb songwriter but much later than John and Paul. John was 17 and Paul was still 15 when George joined the group
martha
george was an extraordinary talent but they main reason he was hired was because he knew all the chords to a popular song of the time that john and paul hoped to play at gigs
Actually, George had a tough time getting his songs on records. He was a friend of Paul's from school and John thought he was too young to be in the band. Paul had George play some song that was considered difficult at the time and that sold Lennon.
By the time the Beatles broke up, George had enough material for his first solo album. Most of what was on it were songs John and Paul weren't interested in recording
He only became as good a writer as they were in 1969.
1971: George's great song and the last blast of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound. Still worth multiple plays anytime. The answer to the song's question is as always: nothing. And the girl is adorable. Unfortunately, no video was shot for this back in 1971, so this will have to do.
I never did like Phil Spector's Wall of Sound. WTF was George thinking?
CaptKundalini Phil Spector's Wall of Sound was the best one could have when recording at the time. Many recording advancements today came from the Wall of Sound along with other artists.
Heard an interview with George in the late 90s about All things Must Pass album where he said something like, 'wow that's a lot of echo' which is what I always thought. So maybe later he had a few doubts too. And instruments drowning each other out. Love the recordings anyway but would like to have heard George Martin's production as he had a great touch for clarity and balance.
George did almost no promotion for ATMP aside from interviews. There were no promo clips for the two singles and he had no tour either. Still, it sold millions and was a spectacular testament to his talent as a writer and artist.
I didn't like some of Spector's work on ATMP... but I think he did a really good job on this track.. this was definitely one of the strongest songs on what was a great album.
"The Quiet Beatle" sure had a lot to say in this arguably top 5 of all time albums ever
"The Quiet Beatle" created the most influencial music of my life. From "Here comes the sun" to "Hear me Lord", he was on by side for a long long time ! And still is on my 69 y.o. anniversary ! R.I.P. dear soul brother.
Cloud 9 was the perfect final album too
@@PabloGarcia-ly7pm Agreed! I bought the cassette and cassette singles when they came out, good times
he was in my view the most intelligent of the beatles, he never produced "GARBAGE MUSIC"!!!!!
@@gregoryclemen1870 He had the best albums of all of their solo careers . I feel like after The Beatles he got involved in the American rock culture much more than the others. He was around everyone important that came from the folk-rock surge of the late 60s.
We are so lucky to have had George and the other Beatles. Can't imagine what music would have been without them. No wonder the younger generation are jealous of them.
Jealousy is one of the SEVEN DEADLY SINS - for a lot of reasons .
i miss george harrison.....
NYC Exactly... R.I.P. George....
I wasn't alive while George was.... :(
A gentle voice of reason in the maelstrom of the 1960's and 70's

I agree, miss him
I can't stop playing this song, I woke up with it in my head and it's been there all day.
the best songs do that. They effect the soul.

It's ace!
then you need a "frontal lobotomy" or..... a bottle in front of me!!! 😁
Me too..today i went right to my laptop when i rolled out of bed.
I tried to clean up my room while listening to this song. It endet up just being me just dancing and screaming out the lyrics.
Yes!!! I totally relate!!! 💞❤️💜😊💃
The energy of George’s music does lead one to forget what they’re doing/celebrate✊🏼

Harrison appeared to be a selfless guy. Truly loved to perform for people of all generations.
I’m not really a fan of modern, interpretive dance, but I absolutely love this video. These dancers are amazing, Olivia and Danhi Harrison picked this one out of a number of entries, they chose wisely.
Hey you might like a band called The Doublejumps if you're a George Harrison fan. One of the guys in Doublejumps introduced me to George's music so i'm helping spread the word ✌Peace
Yes the dancing is beautiful. The forest the garden, past the heroes cemetery all with love for the gifts of life. Innocent. God is Love.
@@user-qr9uh1fd8g Yes, I agree. I think your comment absolutely nails it!
@trevorsmith7753 Whether you and others like you are willing to accept or not, Humans are a part of nature!
if only olivia were truly wise and let louise harrison not pass away broke/poor, when she purposefully took george's sister out of his will to keep more money for herself, instead of sharing it with his sister who had petitioned to get their songs on radios, tv stations, making calls, sending letters, seeing how to break into the american market all to promote the band.
The dancing is marvelous, and I love seeing young people appreciate this gorgeous song!
The two dancing capture the exuberant riotous fleeting time of youth...
Members of the San Francisco Ballet
When I first saw this video years ago, I didn't get it, and now decades later, I totally get it. This might be one of the most joyous songs I know, and this video is perfect for it.

This man had life on point. The most underrated Beatle, what a legend.
In the movie "I am Sam", the work of George Harrison is discussed in detail, and with praise.
Look up on google----global truth project----click The Present. It answers all of life’s biggest questions and can turn this world right side up from the beginning of it. Nothing is more important than reading it.

You can’t overrate a Beatle!
He's underrated because his bandmates (apart from Ringo) and producer underrated him, and the masses followed suit like sheep.
Anyone who sees how beautiful an artist this man was knows.
DrTomoculus
I don’t know...
He wasn’t the type of guy who sought the main rung. He sat back for years before cracking and telling his band mates he felt useless.
Imagine what would have been if the Beatles never broke up! They would have had to release a six album opus of material that had built up!
It’s actually glorious (in one very very limited sense) that they did break up. Look at what we have!
Emma Rubinowitz-what a joy to watch when listenning to George Harrisons classic
Just think, you were alive at the same time as George Harrison. And if you weren't, he left this for you.
This is a very inspiring thought. Thank you for this new perspective and view!
I agree. “And if you weren’t, he left this for you.” That’s beautiful. Amen brother.
He died when I was 3

I have got a lot of answers I was loking for from George. I just wished I knew him better earlier. But I guess nothing is never too late.
I like the idea of making new videos of songs that never had a real video before....if not just for the audio quality......also , I love the fact that young people are enjoying a classic song!
