Indeed. Back when the Enz were a (borderline) prog band, Eddie was the guy who put that material over. And he is/was apparently self-taught. It's also a bit funny to hear all those cheesy Vox/Farfisa organ sounds coming out of high-dollar (at the time) synths.
I remember the 1st time I heard this in 1980. I was just 19 in my 69 Mach1 with my beautiful girlfriend and we just loved it. I even remember exactly where we were..lol love it and takes me back to a wonderful time in my life..
2019 and I’m only just fully starting to appreciate the absolute genius of Neil Finn. I always enjoyed the big hitters from Crowded House, but digging deeper, it’s easy to see the man’s a genius. Split Enz are incredible!!
I remember seeing them on my favorite show Fridays as a little boy. I loved this song. but I didn't know who the artist or the name of the song was. they were playing in a restaurant and I place SoundHound on it. I am glad I finally found the artist and the phone thank God for SoundHound and TH-cam!
I was 18 years old when this song first came on the radio waves. This the first time I've heard this song in 33 years. This band is nowhere to be found in any record Store thanks for putting it on You Tube.
wow,...i had forgotten that bands used to actually play their instruments and sing live when they performed live!!!! i like how the singer is so confident..he knows that he is nailing it.
I first remember hearing this in the UK in 1981. I was blown away. I've followed them ever since culminating in a concert (Crowded House) In Stanley Park in Vancouver.
I lived through that era & did love all of these great bands. The Finn Brothers are still brilliant & relevant. I'm amazed how prolific they are...& how they're still giving us insanely wonderful music. Growing up in Manhattan, radio was a bit more open to this wave,( & the Brits). These bands toured decent sized clubs here, & also in larger cities. There aren't enough superlatives for The Finns artistry I wish I could "rewind", (& be @ 4 years older so I cld hv enjoyed more of it). IFI could "go back", it would be with the knowledge of how priceless this era in pop culture was. I would know to savor much more of every happy moment that was privy too. I'd take nothing for granted & ( thru experience), know just how fast it goes ! So fast, it is scary At l re ast you hv YT etc.
LOL..The whole clip is The Enz in their brightly colored suits. Brilliant splashes of color, and great music to start off the 80's/ End song, pan to audience. Stuck in the 70's ..LOL what a contrast.
Yeah, America has to be dragged screaming and kicking into the 80s, what with Arena Rock and flares. Now everyone dresses American in Baseball hats etc. 🏴😎
First time I heard them was on a live local radio broadcast on K-97 from the Riviera Rock Room in Edmonton, Alberta. Canada. Guessing about 1980. Great era, great times! Did get to see them live at a later date at the Edmonton Coliseum, which now is known as Rexall Place.
After listening to this song over and over for a good 30 minutes I have concluded the following: Rainbow Clothing on stage = awesome 4+ keyboards for 1 band = not overkill Making sinister faces at the camera = great
i still come back to this video after seeing CH live and meeting Neil and the band because this is their roots, this is where CH started even though they were still Split Enz. any music Neil does is amazing, and no one can touch or top it, imo!
McCartney denies saying that but said that he loves his writing themusic.com.au/news/all/2017/06/22/unsure-of-kanye-west-and-love-of-neil-finn-what-you-missed-in-paul-mccartney%E2%80%99s-facebook-live-chat/
What I thought was really interesting was at the end of the synth solo when the piano did the ascending arpeggio/scale riff! I always thought it was the synth but buried with delays. Now it's clear...very nice!
I love this song -- one of my favorites of the 80's! This is truly a live performance. Keyboard player nailed every sound and every note! FANTASTIC -- especially the oscillator sync sweep and organ sounds coming out of the Prophet-5. This is one of those songs that you listen to and wonder if would really sound that good live. These guys, especially the keyboard player, really made it sound like the studio (not to take away from the rest of the band).
top video! that scene really showed the band as playing a remarkably clean delivery of a fantastically well written song, and the singer really shows of his pride and gets more and more pleased with the collective performance and his own singing as each line passes. this is objectively what another band would have proudly accomplished, basically. Why do I even talk.. :-(
Eddie Rayner ... Keyboard wizard extraordinaire. His genius should be shouted from the rooftops... That keyboard player should've got paid double having to play that lot lol Epic chorus. That's how it's done. Well done lads.
Whaaaat.....???A band that actually performs instead of lip-syncing to a recording.....??!!! Neil Finn is a God. They should have gotten a standing ovation.
This show (Fridays) changed my musical taste forever. I still remember watching this performance with Neil singing. It solidified my near obsession with them for 30 years now. I was 12 when I first saw them; I still love Neil.
I LOVE THIS GROUP! I've got the original ALBUM with both "I Got You" & "I Hope I Never" on it. It's called "True Colours" & also has a couple more outstanding songs on it, "Poor Boy" & "Shark Attack". All in all it's a VERY GOOD album. It's in mint condition & still has the price sticker on it, $7.59. The album came out in 1980 & I believe Neil joined the group in 1977.
I remember this well because it was the very first time I ever heard or saw Split Enz. I've been an avid follower of anything Finn ever since. I've enjoyed aging with these guys.
And both of those terms wound up being clouded and overused. In 1980, the term “New Wave” had a very identifiable definition. By ‘84 or so it just meant any band that used synths and wore skinny ties. Same thing with “Alternative”, which initially meant exactly what the word means, but later on just meant any band with a wannabe Eddie Vedder singer. Now it’s happened to “Indie”.
One of the best of the 80's Groups. 40 years later & you will still see Neil & Tim Finn credited in Peter Jacksons Hobbit Triliogy. Too cool for school :)
I am only 25 but I find myself morphing into a woman in her late 40's early 50's I love music from the 80's and I wish I could've lived through these times
Am so glad I lived my late teens/early 20's in this era...and to boot I saw Split Enz live in Australia around 1982 in a small venue somewhere in QLD..fab fab magic
Wow, great performance from Neil and the boys. Mad props to Eddie Rayner on keyboards, the real heart of the band.
Indeed. Back when the Enz were a (borderline) prog band, Eddie was the guy who put that material over. And he is/was apparently self-taught. It's also a bit funny to hear all those cheesy Vox/Farfisa organ sounds coming out of high-dollar (at the time) synths.
Yeah, this man is great
Eddie never got the credit he deserved. He is so talented !
Eddie Rayner ... Keyboard wizard extraordinaire. His genius should be shouted from the rooftops...
One of my favorite songs from the 80’s. It’s a timeless classic.
Same here.
Fridays was a really great show way back in the day.
I remember the 1st time I heard this in 1980. I was just 19 in my 69 Mach1 with my beautiful girlfriend and we just loved it. I even remember exactly where we were..lol love it and takes me back to a wonderful time in my life..
This song was truly ahead of its time and i feel remains timeless
bought this album with its funky laser etching in 1980 as a 15 year old, still listening to it today.
A terrific song, on the cusp of the New Wave movement. I love the suits that the band was wearing.
One of the iconic NZ songs. In 1980 it was playing on all our rock music stations.
And in my house in Missouri, United States!
It got a fair amount of airtime here in America as well, but not as much as it should have. This song killed it’s competition back then.
Epic chorus. That's how it's done. Well done lads.
Eddie Rayner is the most underrated keyboard player ever
They should have gotten a standing ovation.
Split Enz/Crowded House...........yesssss
I saw Split Enz in about May 1982. They were magical.
What a kick ass keyboard set up for those day
You said it sister!
@@2degucitas needs a separate trucks just for it
The Prophet ?? was the only one to pull up presets quickly. Vintage stuff, and not cheap back then.
@@pfdtx Forget the Prophet, there's a CS-80 next to it!
There's an Octave CAT, too. I have one out in my garage.
Absolutely love this song and until now never saw the actual group themselves. Thank you
2019 and I’m only just fully starting to appreciate the absolute genius of Neil Finn. I always enjoyed the big hitters from Crowded House, but digging deeper, it’s easy to see the man’s a genius. Split Enz are incredible!!
The keyboard and the singing are sensational in this classic!
I remember seeing them on my favorite show Fridays as a little boy. wow,...i had forgotten that bands used to actually play their instruments and sing live when they performed live!!!! i like how the singer is so confident..he knows that he is nailing it.
That's a very young Neil Finn...and yes, he's nailing it.
He’s confident because he actually has talent.
I first remember hearing this in the UK in 1981. I was blown away. I've followed them ever since culminating in a concert (Crowded House) In Stanley Park in Vancouver.
amazing synth rig!!!

I had this on cassette in college, played it over and over and over and over and over and over and.............................
LOL..The whole clip is The Enz in their brightly colored suits. Brilliant splashes of color, and great music to start off the 80's/ End song, pan to audience. Stuck in the 70's ..LOL what a contrast.
I know! Check out the fuzzy-headed dude in with the pilot shades! I remember lots of guys went with that style way back then!
Yeah, America has to be dragged screaming and kicking into the 80s, what with Arena Rock and flares. Now everyone dresses American in Baseball hats etc. 🏴😎
@@jonathansteadman7935 BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Sure thing, Screech!
Keyboardist is surrounded by some of the best gear ever made...and he not only knows how to play great,he uses it all!
New too this band. Me likes. !
What a fantastic post - this is the real deal here - birth of a star - Neil Finn!
Perfect new zealand band and wonderfull song

ddellwo Every band that performed on this show ("Fridays") played live.
and damn well!
I saw Split Enz in 1984 at the Bowl of Brooklands in New Plymouth NZ. I was only 14, and what an awesome gig that was.
After listening to this song over and over for a good 30 minutes I have concluded the following:
Rainbow Clothing on stage = awesome
4+ keyboards for 1 band = not overkill
Making sinister faces at the camera = great
Drummer more interested in atmosphere than mere timekeeping= perfect
Man Eddie had a busy time on those keys and nailed it ,great band one of my favourite songs of all time
An absolute class song, timeless...
i still come back to this video after seeing CH live and meeting Neil and the band because this is their roots, this is where CH started even though they were still Split Enz. any music Neil does is amazing, and no one can touch or top it, imo!
Great song, great band, great version. Is it any wonder Paul McCartney cites Neil Finn as one of his greatest songwriters.
Darren Traynor citation needed otherwise it never happened
Darren Traynor the beatles were a heavy influence of neil...u can hear it in some crowded house songs
Don't forget Tim started Neil in music and formed split enz.
McCartney denies saying that but said that he loves his writing

Hey bro I know your comment is 5 years old but I had no idea about him writing for Paul cool info. I hope your well bro.
phenomenal --- live
I love it the multiple keyboards are great
I liked them way back when. This is the best version I have heard. And live too!
Split Enz/Crowded House...........yesssss
What a kick ass keyboard set up for those day
Perfect new zealand band and wonderfull song
Neil Finn is a God.
They are one of the very few bands like The Cars that sound good live (i.e. without studio magic).
+Omar Garcia I was thinking them and Gary Numann's Cars.
Big Country fits in also also as a great sounding live band.
Perfect version of.thr recording of not better
Funny, I’d a while back heard that the Cars was boring in concert. Dunno first hand.
Um, there are TONS of bands that sound better live than on record. That’s almost always the case.
Awesome to see the synth solo nailed accurately live as Im trying to figure out how to play it myself.
What I thought was really interesting was at the end of the synth solo when the piano did the ascending arpeggio/scale riff! I always thought it was the synth but buried with delays. Now it's clear...very nice!

Great live lotta of talent up there. That keyboard setup is cool.
Iconic
Quite possibly THE best chorus of any song that also double's as the songs hook. So frickin' explosive and catchy.
Majestic song - intriguing lyrics with a moody and uplifting melody
That's one hell of a keyboard set-up..... a collector's dream today!
TIME TRAVELED THANKS SO MUCH SPLIT ENZ!!!!!AUTHENTIC!!!
top video!

Geez, where have I been? I've never seen this video before. I like it!
Such a top-flight, first rate performance.
That keyboard break is awesome!!!
They should have gotten a standing ovation.
Well, they got a squatting ovation. That should mean something.
Eddie Rayner ... Keyboard wizard extraordinaire. His genius should be shouted from the rooftops...
That keyboard player should've got paid double having to play that lot lol
Epic chorus. That's how it's done. Well done lads.
Great band and song 😊
awesome live version of a killer tune--thanks!

Neil Finn is a God.
They should have gotten a standing ovation.
God this song takes me back. THANKS!!!!
I was 11 years old when I saw this and I credit it for starting my love of alternative music.
Hi Scott I recommend an alternative song called 'Where I Come From' By Robert Nix
This is a perfect pop song. Along with Tempted by Squeeze. Two of the best pure pop songs of all time.
This show (Fridays) changed my musical taste forever. I still remember watching this performance with Neil singing. It solidified my near obsession with them for 30 years now. I was 12 when I first saw them; I still love Neil.
This is in my personal Hall of Fame!

Wow. Talk about memories coming back. Great tune, I always liked it, even though they weren't popular here in Italy
Sounds as good as the album! Nice!
one of the best live played songs ever.
Wish I could go back there
great tune, fantastic arrangement, awesome performance....
I remember this well because it was the very first time I ever heard or saw Split Enz. I've been an avid follower of anything Finn ever since. I've enjoyed aging with these guys.
thats the 80,s for you, love the music !!!!
Classic New Wave GREATNESS!!!
This was the term used before they came up with " alternative " to classify this - at that time - brand new genre!
Good comment. :)
Thanks xreddragonx!

Excellent job on this song, especially live
So good this song. I'm gonna make sure we play this song in our band.
Beautiful song, said from Italy, at the antipodes of New Zealand.😊
an excellent LIVE performance...thanks for posting!

What a long and wonderful career these guys have enjoyed- One the few bands I've always wanted to see live, They don't get out on tour too much.

I just love the colorful suits. Great song!

Fantastic post!!!
Gee, I really miss "The 80's" and "New Wave" music!!! 🤫
What a great singer Neil Finn is.love this group and crowded house
One of my fave songs of the eighties!
Neil plays this live production perfectly! He knows which camera angle is on him and plays his eyes to it. Really smooth stuff here.
Great song. Can't believe it's almost 40yrs old.
one of the best live vids i have seen,,,just awsum
I'm still listen to them in 2012! Timeless.
Always loved this song, they used to show the video in the early days of MTV. Plus I think that is Kramer on tambourine, lol.
Fridays was so great...
