    I'm about to do this to a 99. I didn't know that bit about the differences in the frames. The motor mount holes in the frame line up from the 6.0 to the 7.3 ?

    I can rebuild and update a 2002 F350 to a 2010 F350, but I can't fix the garage door so I can work inside. LOL
    This is so cool! I was wondering if it was possible and what it would take. Now everyone knows, thanks to you, it can be done fairly inexpensively. I think you're doing a super job and getting this truck updated. Thanks for sharing. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

    So if I do the same frame swap on my 2000 Excursion 7.3 4x4, could I reuse my original 2000 front axle by mounting it on the 2005 frame? I understand they have different bolt patterns.

    You know to do an 05 coil axle swap, you don’t need to chop the frame and weld a new one on. All the brackets from the 05 will bolt right onto the 02.

      @LimaTangoZulu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Legend-fw6eb yeah man. Look around on Ford forums, like Powerstroke Nation, or The Diesel Stop. Those dudes can tell you more about how to do it. But it basically involves getting the front axle, and all the suspension linkages. Everything should bolt right up, except for the 04 steering pitman arm, to the 05 drag linkage. The 05 steering system uses bigger ball joints, so you’ll need to ream out the 04 pitman arm to fit the 05 drag link. You’ll also want an 05 rear axle, as well. Reason being the lug nuts are different, the brakes are bigger, and the track width is wider on the 05. So you’ll want both axles to match. Hope this helps, go to Powerstroke Nation forums if you wanna look more into it. Good luck on your build!

    • @Legend-fw6eb

      @@LimaTangoZulu awesome man great useful info, didn't know that about the pitman arm and drag linkage. I already have an 08 rear end, so this is the icing on that cake to finish the ride quality to how I want it. Read a couple of forums but that's one part I haven't seen. Getting everything needed except that subframe for $500, some cleaning painting and new hardware and hopefully it comes out nice in the next couple months.

      Yea I did but i'm glad i did. I could've done it to just drop the axle, but i was doing some engine work at the same time, and i got to paint the frame, and honestly to re-graft the frame to me was more worth it than to punch out the coil bucket rivets, and to drill the three holes up front in the cross member, and to adapt the other components. In the end the steering gear box and everything was already in place ready to go and meant to be on this frame, so I didnt mind it.

    Why in the heck didnt you just swap the axle? I did a 08 axle swap on my 99.. way easier to swap and mount coil buckets bud.

    • @Jimmyziggy
      @Jimmyziggy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Beagler Bass Fishing & Outdoors I know that, a lot of people have questioned me on it. In the video i explain why: the frames are different from 05-07. Much beefier to support all the weight of the coil spring on the cross member. Old frames cracked during testing so Ford updated it. Sure people have gotten away with just swapping the brackets but I don’t like taking chances going against the way the 4wd coil setup was designed with the frame. I know all the holes are there and everything, but that’s for the 2wd version, a much less rated version of suspension than the newer 4wd axle.

    • @BeaglerBassFishingOutdoors
      @BeaglerBassFishingOutdoors 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      King Shaka Customs i dont think the weight is much difference.. leaf springs prob weigh more then buckets and springs or about close.

    • @Jimmyziggy
      @Jimmyziggy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Beagler Bass Fishing & Outdoors Beagler Bass Fishing & Outdoors I’m not disagreeing with you there. My point is that the leaf spring contacts in two spots on the frame, whereas the coil spring makes contact at one. The force distribution is a lot different therefore. Hence why they supported it more where the coilspring makes contact. One day I can make a video more explaining my thoughts and calculations

    • @kaelzoglmann1391
      @kaelzoglmann1391 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The issue isn't the weight. The leaf's put the load force straight up into the frame while the spring buckets try and twist the frame towards the engine. This force is s why spring tower supports are put onto vehicles like rally cars.

  • @Ohiocountryboy-se2cn

    If the 99 to 04 frames were not strong enough for coil springs. Then why do the 2wd super duties coil springs.

    • @Jimmyziggy
      @Jimmyziggy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Matt Smith Because if you look at the 2wd components, they are much less rated than the 4wd version from 2005+. And it also takes into account the nature of a 4wd truck versus a 2wd truck. People are more likely to off-road in a 4wd truck which adds more force and impact as you can imagine. Do many people do it? No, but it gets factored in. Also think about plowing, the extra weight of a plow on a 4wd vehicle, that cause more stress on the front end. People don’t plow in 2wd vehicles (well most people don’t in these trucks at least). The frames were fine for the 2wd coil springs, up until testing and analysis were performed on the 4wd version of the coil springs and estimated loads and occurrences with it. It’s also about material fatigue and internal deformation of the material over time too. I can go on further, but I will make a video explaining it all one day eventually. I’m not trying to scare anyone here who’s thinking or has done an axle swap, I’m just looking at it from an engineering standpoint, because that’s what I am - I have studied and dealt with the ways material failures could occur similar to situations like this.

    • @ReindeerBork
      @ReindeerBork 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason more so being that the 2wd SD’s use TIB still with two points of contact (pivots) vs a live axle front axle. To be honest with you I don’t believe it was a huge issue either way. I believe the engine crossmember gussets came about with many changes from Ford trying to stiffen the frames of the 05+ trucks up over the 99-04. If I recall correctly they also changed the frame thickness in the change over as well.
