    I’ve learned a lot from Tommy since I was a kid. The one technique I’ve never agreed with is pitching the deck for drainage. The gaps in the deck boards allow for drainage. I prefer a perfectly level deck. The only exception would be a 3 season screened deck without gaps in the decking.

    • @ryan17954
      @ryan17954 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Porches are built with pitch? Why would a deck not be? Not all decks are built with pressure treated wood either. And being Tommy is from Massachusetts, where there are 4 changing seasons, winter with lots of snow that does a number on decks.

    • @jakobdaniel2110

    Why didn't you use the hammer drill to drive in the wedge anchors?
    Set the hammer drill to the hammer mode after drilling the hole. Light pressure on the top of the wedge anchor bolt will drive it in quickly.
    A millwright taught me that trick a few years ago. It's very efficient.
    Especially if you carry the hammer drill, impact, and the wedge anchors (in a roofing nail pouch) all on 1 good belt.

      International building code states you need to be below your frost line here in New England that is usually about 48 inches but also you need to have the bottoms flared wider to prevent the post space from being pushed up by Concrete HHI‘s so if you use a 1 foot elephant foot base with a 12 inch sono tube 4 foot long And with an extended about 6 inches above finish grade you should be within code compliance but always check your local building codes to make sure that you are correct because if you’re not it’s gonna be one big headache to remove the post base to ensure proper code compliance

  • @scotttovey
    @scotttovey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think I would have taken a piece of the board and used it as a spacer to begin driving the screws in, then, once all the screws are started, the spacer will remain in place and you can just slide the next board in place without having to worry that the spacer will fall out as the board the spacer is inserted too, and the screw, will keep the spacer in it's place.

    • @kylegrimm8808
      @kylegrimm8808 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know where that came from, but I don't see the advantage. The pt wood is made for direct ground contact. I would say the idea came from the days cedar or doug fir framing that can rot when saturated. If anything it would cause issues today. Decking materials need to dryout, 15lb paper isn't going to keep the top of that joist dry.

    • @nh39308
      @nh39308 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is usually an added step from the contractor on installation some of us older guys are used to putting in the tarpaper under the decking I prefer to do it all the time so this way here when the client looks down onto the deck they don’t see the green spacing between the deck boards and yes it does ensure a longer life of your pressure treated joists

    • @davidduryea6821
      @davidduryea6821 ปีที่แล้ว

      Placing tape over the joists lengthens the life of the deck. Pressure treated wood can rot too if constantly exposed to moisture. Granted it will take quite a while, but why not go the extra step to extend the life of a beautiful deck?

      99bablefish has to go back to double check, and yes the outside board doesn’t have slot!

      Ahmed, some manufacturers have what’s called a blind Fechner were at spaces out the grooved edge voyage from a smooth edge board so it would only clip into the groove the edge of the first field board that they had said in place or what you could do is what Norman did in the video and put in the blind Fasner it’s usually up to the installers discretion and also the manufacturers recommendations as to how that first field board is set

      Correction to my previous post it should read Blind fastener and smooth edge board not voyage

    Sealing the tops of those beams before installing the decking would add many years of service and prevent rot!

    Great vid as always. One complaint... needed like 5 more seconds of this video to show the finished product. We need the capstone to the video!

      @Crotch Banister Yes they were: "Trex Decking Tiki Torch - Composite Deck Board Sample". I just ordered some samples at the moment. Will see how it will cope under the elements before I go on a full swing purchase mode.

      @Crotch Banister 🤣 🤣That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid - "Regret!" - On the reviews I read which were probably fake 5/5 market gimmick reviews, one reviewer who gave the product a 1/5 mentioned the boards didn't even last a year and they started warping. Another mentioned that the color is just a 3 coat layer and is not penetrated to the wood. This got me a little skeptical especially considering the Texas unpredictable weather with summer temps of 102+. I'm looking forward to start my project next summer, if the trex doesn't favor I will just fall back to treated wood. I will keep you posted about the samples though.

    Those footers were not put in the correct spots judging by where the plates landed.

      Joe, sometimes the outer edges are place so the post base rises the edge for stairs or walkways the footers that were in the run were more centered, but always checks your local codes and the IBC code book to be sure.

    Why would you put the the post bracket on the edge of the round footings? all the weight is on one side, doesn't suppose to be int he middle?, maybe I missed something.

    I found that drilling into the synthetic boards from the top tends to shorten the lifespan of the surface board.

    • @ahmedriyadh7520

      Still better than leaving a nail or screw exposed to oxidation and as a result to quickly rotting the board surface!
