My father built two decks around our house one summer when I was kid. This really makes me appreciate what he did. Because he made it seem like it was just another day in the park.
I found the chapters in th-cam.com/users/postUgkxYGamVaHfdHiPlAQaLa7zkwR02OKpGYDU to be very relevant to my project as I embarked on building my first ever structure from the ground up. I especially found this Ryan’s Shed Plans to be of great use when it came to building the roof. I was able to do all the cuts and installation by myself, with a little reference to this Ryan’s Shed Plans.

Amazing! You saved my new job with this video. I'm a project manager of a small construction company. I have to bid out all materials and labor. I haven't done this in 20 yrs since my husband passed. We had our own small construction company. God Bless You my dear!
Tip for those building a deck.. Increase the beam size using a free beam calculator like forte, increases the distance it can span unsupported.. Then you don't have to dig as many footings. Cost is usually a wash. Great video!
Those footings are massive! As a deck builder Its rare to find a customer who is comfortable with the extra cost. Im glad to see you put in the extra effort and didnt shy away from a difficult task! Keep up the good work!
This was so therapeutic to watch. Possibly the best deck in the World Wide Web. The fact you have shown one does not need a beer to complete an exemplary task. Thank you for your craftsmanship for sharing your unique skill.
One thing you did wrong. I didn't see a beer throughout the entire video. You can't build an outdoor structure, without the presence of a frosty beverage.
@@meelis79 It could be. I'm not sure. It could be a Red Bull. Or, it could be a Coors Light. Coors Light still doesn't qualify as beer, however. But, good eye.
Pretty good video. Bonus for telling people to let the wood season before coating with anything. One issue though, in all my years of construction the one thing an inspector will tell you to correct, is the lack of gap in the decking. Thanks for making this video! I just finished my deck-build this weekend based on this design, and I consulted this video probably 1000 times to finish my project. Thanks for making this content!
Excellent,Beautiful,Magnificent! I would like to suggest incorporating benches into the railings because, that nice big deck is going to get real small after they add furniture, a grill, coolers, and friends!
Nice video! No need for the joist hangers on the rim board though. I guess you could use them upside down since the rim board is hanging from the joists. Hangers are only necessary if the joist is butting into its support piece without being supported within 4’ of the connection.
I wish I’d seen this comment before building my deck. The upside down joist hanger is a pretty good idea. You could use them for and they would provide extra support for the rim joist, facing, and rails. They could also be easier to attach. The main thing they do right side up is help align your nails for toenailing on the inside of the rim. Doing that also does attach the hanger to the joist, which then is attached to the rim. So that does provide some support but not as much as the other way.

Hey Chris, it’s Chris! Sorry it’s taken me so long to say hello whoever I just wanted to reach out and say congratulations on all of your recent success and this deck build was absolutely an inspiration! Definitely going to put one in my backyard after the winter! Also that 45° cut you did on all of the railings at once… Genius!! Take care brother
Must be nice to have Lowe's pick such clear, straight boards! Nothing like I find at my local store, or what they deliver if you dare to let them "pick." Using a framing square would speed up the layout for the joists - no need to make all those measurements.
Great video with a lot of great tips! 🙂I notice you did not mention the header where it attaches to the house. In Washington state that is a critical attachment and there is specific hardware you are required to use. Also, in Washington, the deck install must be permitted before installation, and deck framing must pass inspection before you are allowed to install the actual decking. The impact of not doing this could be an inability to sell your home, or refusal of insurance to pay for parts of your home if fire damaged. The main point being, local building departments should be contacted prior to beginning work. Some states and municipalities are picky, some not so much. 😉
I wish I knew about that when my contractor built my home and 2nd story deck. LOL I have to take it down and rebuild it properly as it MOVES alot from my cats walking on it.
Wonder if he did but didn’t show it. Either way I didn’t see any flashing on the ledger board. If it’s a freestanding deck which does not require the ledger board be attached, I would think you’d see a gap between the house and ledger board. Good video though.
I hated every time he said "code" and "permit". Ok, lets call the inspector to see if this is secure. Worst case is you break a leg if you fall but that's solely your responsibility of using a deck. You can opt to not use it xD
@@scientist100 I dont know what part of florida he lives in but in my area its a fat ass fine. I cant get rid of my trees without having to ask permission and I have to replace them with another tree. He prolly just wants to make sure so a 5k fine doesnt show up at his house.
scientist100 I mean.... he isn’t going to make a video and say that he doesn’t care if you follow code. Someone watching could come back saying they watched his video and something could come back on him for false information. And since he recorded building it, he could’ve been fined if they reported the video not following major safety requirements
To be fair, if its unpermitted, you're gonna have a tough task selling it. You are gonna have to demo it before it would qualify for most financing. The value a PERMITTED deck adds to your home value, offsets the ass pain to get it.
Should do a video on building a deck around a hot tub. It's insane on how many people have to idea how to build around the tub. You have get in all around the hot tub if any repairs come up.
Great video and great tips. Could have used some sense of how long things take. Did notice you start project in tee shirt, but then looks like a winter jacket by end. My projects usually take place over a change in seasons, too.
Can't build it now? You'll be able to next year! It's all practice, and it's so damn rewarding. Learn to build boxes with different kinds of joints - the skills you need for that are the basis of practically everything else in woodworking (most things you build - like a deck! - are variations of boxes). I've renovated my entire 70's house (minus electricity, I got a pro for that) with the help of youtube videos and now I'm building my own furniture with youtube videos. Dovetail joints? TH-cam. We're lucky to live in an age where all that valuable information is available for free.
Nicely done. Good info for harry homeowner and some tips for us worker guys. I just finished a 24'x12' one with a 8'x8' wrap around. Stairs at both ends. I learned to trim the joists to length after installing most of the deck boards the hard way years ago. I hate seeing a partial board on projects like this. I notch my railing posts the same way, but on this one I also mortised the 2x4's into the posts leaving them about 3/8th proud. Did that on a whim and like the look. I do like your short bottom piece connecting the lower rail boards at the corners. I miter mine but will consider that on the next job. Thanks for making this video. kcb

Thanks so much man!! Much appreciated!
Круто! Всё быстро, чётко и аккуратно. И древесина видно хорошая
Vlad, could not have said it better myself!
Anyone can do this. But you have to believe in yourself and be willing to be teachable. Have a blessed one.
Must be nice to have Lowe's pick such clear, straight boards! Nothing like I find at my local store, or what they deliver if you dare to let them "pick." Using a framing square would speed up the layout for the joists - no need to make all those measurements.
Jim W lol yeah as a Lowe’s employee I recommend always picking out your own lumber
Remember in the beginning of the video he said it was sponsored by Lowe's
he ordered extras and flipped the bad boards around haha
Interesting how watching a DYI deck building video convinced me to hire a professional 😳
Was thinking the same
Beautifully done, I like that the dog was inspecting at every part of the building hahahaha
You are so talented and a great teacher to your team. This video was amazing... I can’t wait for my husband and I to do ours !! Tooo excited.
you sir are a gift from the deck building gods....
I've never seen a deck build without attaching the ledger board to the house. I never knew that was an option. Thanks for the video. Nice job.
Wonder if he did but didn’t show it. Either way I didn’t see any flashing on the ledger board. If it’s a freestanding deck which does not require the ledger board be attached, I would think you’d see a gap between the house and ledger board. Good video though.
Graet job! I hope that the gaps between boards will be wide enough for wood movement. Regards!
Also needs more spacing to avoid the buildup of moisture. A strong, nice deck don't mean shit if the wood rots slowly over the next couple of years.
Yeah he screwed up there. You gap the boards with a speed square when they are NOT dry, that way you will always have a gap for drainage.
Because of you I now build decks enjoying the awesomeness of great pay and my own schedule 😲 thanks cousin!
This was a thing of beauty!
lol...building permit. Thats cute.
Almost all cities have permit requirements to build a deck. Decks 200sq ft or larger and/or attached to the house require a permit
Should do a video on building a deck around a hot tub. It's insane on how many people have to idea how to build around the tub. You have get in all around the hot tub if any repairs come up.
Great job and very well thought out, using this as the basis for my deck! Thanks for the help
Going to have to tear down that house now and build one to match the quality of the deck.
I'm finally about to build the deck outside my sliding glass door, this helps a ton, THANKS ✌️♥️🌲🍄
Great video and great tips. Could have used some sense of how long things take. Did notice you start project in tee shirt, but then looks like a winter jacket by end. My projects usually take place over a change in seasons, too.
Wish I had even an inch of craftsmanship that you have. So frustrating having to not have something because i cant build it
Can't build it now? You'll be able to next year! It's all practice, and it's so damn rewarding. Learn to build boxes with different kinds of joints - the skills you need for that are the basis of practically everything else in woodworking (most things you build - like a deck! - are variations of boxes). I've renovated my entire 70's house (minus electricity, I got a pro for that) with the help of youtube videos and now I'm building my own furniture with youtube videos. Dovetail joints? TH-cam. We're lucky to live in an age where all that valuable information is available for free.
This is a legit deck. Excellent work man
Nicely done. Thanks for making this video. kcb
This is not a DIY project. This is pro work!
Thank you so much. You are a very considerate person. You also seem very smart. We're purchasing our first home and this is the first upgrade it so badly needs. Thank you for making this video!
Went from game show bloopers to deck building in 15 minutes. God I love TH-cam!
This guy is a wizard. Makes it look so damn easy: spoiler alert, it isn’t! Dude has more skill in his pinky than I do in my whole body lol
This video convinced me that I need to hire somebody to build my deck but hey that Lowes app is cool!
i was wachting twerk videos now im here im finna build a dek
what? hahaha
i on the other hand... started with this and found myself at twerking
Ahh.. the great youtube algorithm.
Wtf is a 'dek'?
