The notion of collecting scarcity is not what this hobby is about. Glad you've made the decision to collect rare books but many collect nostalgia and art from their collecting Era. That's not a mistake.

There is good insight here. What are you doing to avoid these things? Taking a break? Selling?
One thing I see with your collection is the desire to own ever cool book in existence. Nothing wrong with that. I love your collection.
Has it ever crossed your mind to sell it all for one MONSTER book?

To avoid worry about buying the wrong books I always buy the deal. I want so many books that I rarely go after 1 book, I just go after what is the best deal. So it might be buying books from a vendor that is selling them way under valued, buying collections for a fraction of their value etc. If you always buy the deal you have room for books to loose value and still be even and also room to sell some that you duplicate for a profit to cover your cost. I always aim to break even with everything I buy, I want to buy way more then I can afford and at Times I buy way more then I can afford, but if I am going to overspend it will only be on a deal, a collection, a steal of a deal so I can sell some to get closer to break even. And in the cases where I do overspend, I immediately pull out things from my collection to sell so I can get to break even faster. I never sell from my collection to make a big purchase, but If I get a screaming deal I always pull something out to sell to cover the cost. My Main collection has always been my ZiGGY collection and I have a hard time parting with any of that, so I started collecting comics and other things I enjoy knowing it would be easier to part with things when I needed to. I occasionally get people wishing they had my budget or where as rich as me. I am not rich, and really have zero budget. What I have is a huge ocean of stuff that gains value with time. I spent lots of time sculpting that collection, pruning the things that are stagnate and common and always selling something to keep the ball rolling and finding rarer and better things for the collection. I also don't have a job or income coming in to fund the hobby. Buying and selling a lot is my job. If I don't buy I don't eat. And flipping things fast for marginal profits I have learned don't work best for me, I like to let things grow and mature. Sell off things I think are no longer moving, and find the deals to increase my collections value and increase the amount of things I really love. At the end of the day I just love to collect and I find ways to make the collecting pay for itself. If you can do that, the cost of your collection will no longer stress you out.

I've never experienced FOMO or Seller's remorse. Decades ago, I realized that chasing trendy books rarely pays off in the long run-they often lose their value over time. Once I decide to sell a book, I don't dwell on it; I've already received what I deemed fair or had no interest in keeping it. Instead, I focus on acquiring books I believe will retain or increase in value over the years. I enhance my collection by carefully selecting and improving books, particularly those I can restore to a high grade through cleaning and pressing.

The best way to get a realistic value of your collection is to sell a portion of it - most people vastly overestimate the value of their collection. The time/work involved in selling your collection is enormous and if you sell to a dealer you will be lucky if recover 40 or 45% of your purchase cost. 💲

Great list, im sure most of us have done all of the above. One of my mistakes is lacking focus. One week ill be all about cool cover art, the next week ill be looking for first appearances, and just last week i decided out of nowhere to start plugging holes in my Spawn run. I have adopted a similar model to Automatic Comics in that i only buy the big books with proceeds from selling other stuff. I find it mostly keeps me out of the over spending trap, though sometimes it just means i gotta sell some books sooner than i had planned.

    Hi Alan,
    Good advice.
Have you been buying any of the Warrant magazines which are in the style of Warren mags?
If not, you should check them out--SHUDDDER, and VAMPIRESS CARMILLA magazines. They often use Frazetta, San Julian, and Ken Kelly art on the covers, and the interior art is usually very good. Also, Don Glut, who wrote some classic Warren stories writes quite a few new stories for Warrant.

Another excellent show with a lot of good information. My biggest mistake was selling my avengers run from one hundred to the end of the run and then volume two and volume three and so many mini series for about eight hundred bucks to mile high comics. We were moving from a big house to a small two bedroom house that we were renovating at the time. The reason I collected Avengers was I knew everybody in the Marvel Universe was gonna pass through the Avenger, so I knew all the characters, villains, and such. On one hand I was happy to downsize and use the money for the house renovation. On the other hand, all the first appearances that happened in the Avenger's I tossed a way at bargained basement prices. But what do they say? Hindsight is twenty twenty . I'm still happy I had the collection at one point. It took years and years of hunting to collect all those books and that was fun too.

    • @ComicCollectorGeek

And agree - selling is the worst at any time but sometimes it just makes sense as it did in 2020/2021/2022 as buying back is a great opportunity now. Thanks again Allan.

Also pay close attention to the listing. Just bought a Golden Age book that was missing the 1st wrap! It was not mentioned in the listing, but photos clearly showed it was missing. I was too focused on the cover. An otherwise vg+ to fine book is really about a 1.0 to maybe a 0.5. I paid about 8X over its value. Bad on me!

Other than the bumps of learning the ins and outs of the hobby (which is a lot imho) my biggest mistake was buying "placeholder" books just to have a copy when I knew eventually I'd get better copies. Then when I did get the better book it's a pain in the neck to try and get back what you put into the "placeholder". I now wait it out til I can get the better grade.

Sounds like you’re confusing collecting with investing. Collectors, those that buy a book for the love of it, should never regret buying that book. Buy what you love and you’ll always enjoy the hobby.
If you’re buying things you don’t love for the purpose of making money on them, you’ll probably have regrets. Avoid fomo. If you buy new books and the book goes to $40-$50 quickly (Doom #1) you should sell it immediately if your goal is to make money.

    • @ComicCollectorGeek
      @ComicCollectorGeek  วันที่ผ่านมา

Not at all. Collecting involves buying books which have values that fluctuate and we have only limited funds. Also some books go up in value faster than others. So when buying you need to know when is the best opportunity to purchase and when it is best to hold off buying because there will be better opportunities to purchase the same book later. Sometimes you need to jump on an opportunity to buy. Wise buying means you will have less waste of money which means you'll have more money to get other books you desire. Understanding the shifts in the prices is extremely important as a collector.

Actually, my parents paid for my university, which is very affordable in Canada. I worked several jobs to have extra money for comics or food. When I say I was poor it is very relative, obviously there were people less well off then I was but I would survive on about $500/month for food and all monthly expenses except for rent. It was much less comfortable then my current lifestyle.

I think you shouldn't have bought too many slabbed comics. INon comic collectors and ordinary people dont see golden age comic books as high value. They just see it as comics that their grandparents' read. People who dont know comics will think that each of your slabbed golden age comic book just costs a dollar a piece. Most golden age comics arent that popular.

If i were you, I would go into a comicbook fasting mode for half a year and spend the money on really improving my life. Instead of buying comics to get that dopamine hit and "feel good" why not take your family for a trip abroad? Take your wife and kids to Hawaii, Greece, Tokyo, Bangkok, etc.. Maybe rather than spending comics on money,, for once spend it on good clothes, on skin care. Spend that money on a good hair transplant. You'll feel attractive for once. Maybe spend that money for a gym membership...Think about it, you just look at comics. That's all the experience they give to you. They are just wall displays and your addiction to wall displays is out of control. Spend your money elsewhere, on your family, on things that will improve your physique and you'll find genuine happiness.
