I liked how Messiah tuned into Paul’s journey and inner conflict as the story progressed.

I felt the exact same way when I read it! The narrative really does feel disconnected and ethereal. I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was but you totally nailed it, like peering through window! Children of Dune feels more in the room style. The writing does a much better job of setting the scene and painting the pictures of what's going on in an engaging way! If you liked Messiah you'll love the next one!

Nice review! I know I need to read Dune soon, and see the movies - but I was unsure if I’d read any later books. Based on this I think I’ll just plan to read all the Frank Herbert books until one of them sucks!

If you want to continue the Dune series, at least read Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune. The series goes downhill after that.

Some people say it goes downhill after the first book, some after the second, and third. I'd recommend just reading them until you just can't get into one. For me, that one was Heretics. Not saying it's a bad book, but it just didn't grip me like the others did.

Misconceptions and lies. The books go downhill when stupid son Brian takes over. Every book by Frank Herbert is awesome and stop pushing lies from people who never read past the first novel. The 6 novels are awesome.

You have to at least read Children, if not God Emperor as well. If you enjoy and want to see what happens after the events of GEoD, then continue and read the last two. Personally, I think Children, and for the most part GEoD, are a complete story for Paul etc. After that you're so separated from the original characters it's a bit difficult to get into. I also believe the first 3 books are much stronger than the last 3.

I really enjoyed Messiah. Some of the imagery is amazing. So downbeat but I think this was what Herbert was getting at in that Paul is not a hero. It feels like a fitting end.
It’s a good bridge between parts 1 and 3. It doesn’t feel like a standalone novel but as the proper conclusion to the first book.

What you've just read is a VERY old kind of story.
It's a modern Greek tragedy that echoes many of the themes taken on by classical Greek playwrights in THEIR original adaptations (for the stage) of orally transmitted myths that predated them by centuries.
Even the name "Atreides" is a clue: in Greek myth, it refers to a multi-generational "curse of the gods" visited upon the "House of Atreus".
Frank Herbert knew this, of course, and his first four books of the Dune series do depict a multi-generational curse of sorts.
Suffice it to say that "Messiah" is not the end of the story - not even of Paul's story - since it is ultimately Paul's feet of clay in NOT "doing what must be done" (in words Paul utters in Villeneuve's Part II) that condemns his own son to a terrible fate...

I really can't see how Villeneuve can turn this book into a movie blockbuster. Paul is no longer a hero, not much action and it has a sad ending. People who like the book may like the film but the casual movie goer will be disappointed.

    • @toastytowns
      @toastytowns  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

My only guess is maybe Villeneuve plays up the jihad in the time jump and makes the attacks on Paul more actiony? He definitely fleshed out the battles in Dune, whereas Frank could not have cared less about the battles haha

You at least gotta read Children of Dune to see the other characters come into the picture. Without spoiling, you get the plot/character closure for the whole ensemble that it sounds like you were missing from Messiah. Then if you really like the philosophy of Messiah, read God Emperor. I think where Children is the plot/character climax of the Atraides Empire arc, God Emperor is the logical conclusion of all the themes. More of a thematic climax. These first four Dune books make such an amazing contained saga of man striving for godhood!

Paul story is told over dune, dune messiah and ends in children of dune
Paul's son born in dune messiah main character of children of dune and story concludes in God Emperor of Dune
Last 2 books focus on the sisterhood and how the effects n causes of what Paul n Leto II did to the universe.
So if U read Paul's story gotta end at children of dune to get a clear picture
If U wanna continue with his son and understand the whole point of dune n where Paul was heading then read up to god Emperor of Dune but if U wanna know what happens in 1500 years into the future then read the last 2 books. Dune is complex and covers thousands of years. If Ur gonna read Paul's story read messiah and children of dune.

Your wrong dune messiah is not a complete story its the transition book if U read dune messiah U have to read children of dune that story ends all plot points n characters that started in dune all come to a conclusion in children of dune. If U read messiah gotta read children too. It only gets real weird from book 4 onwards set 35,000 years in the future so children of dune is a good place to end not dune messiah. Don't believe the misconceptions about the other novels that are great don't listen to the lies read it for yourself. Read children of dune it ends Paul's story n story of most characters introduced in dune.
