Love the way you review. So much nuance that's actually well selected - great selection of topics to highlight. I'm going to read both now, largely because of your review.
I enjoyed Dune. I had a lot of fun going on that journey... Messiah hit me a lot harder. I felt far more emotional and conflicted by the way it ended. I feel like Messiah elevates everything good in Dune and brings it to a great and satisfying ending... I don't get why people like this one least
It was disliked by so many on its release because it did a better job than Dune did of showing people what Dune was really about (mainly the lesson that political and religious leaders should come with a health hazard warning label) and people tend not to want the truth when it’s inconvenient or unpleasant.
@@BenjaminsBookclub I love the themes presented in the first book but as you said in your review, it feels like it needs a bit of an epilogue, and one that explores that dark overarching idea that Paul isn't a hero. Yeah keep it up! You have a natural way of exploring the content without being overly youtuber (over excited or wacky) and yet also not too dry, great balance!
Fun review, I just finished Dune today and back to backed the movies since the 2nd came out and I wanted to finish the book before watching it. Not sure if I’m gonna get into Messiah since I’d heard you can pretty much treat Dune as a one off if you want, and I think until it gets a bit closer to Villenueve’s 3rd film I’m probably gonna hold off. I just have so many others I’m interested in and I don’t know if I wanna keep diving into just this world right now. On another note I am not a fan of the version of Chani that the movie decided to go with, I understand Villenueve may have wanted a character to express the apprehensive feeling about Paul’s rise to power but it just didn’t click in with me. I really liked the relationship they had in the book, and some may be critical of that but I thought it was great as it was. I’m not a filmmaker or a writer though, so who cares what I think lol
Yeah I think people are fairly split on new Chani, for my money Villenueve's Chani is a much more interesting character, but I think its all personal opinion :) Lots of people prefer the book one. Dune absolutely stands up as a standalone, I think Dune Messiah is amazing, and I liked it more than the original, but leaving it at just the first book is perfectly valid too!
I think Children and God Emperor of Dune are amazing philosophical books but i don't believe their necessary to read if your only reading the series for Paul
I've just now finished Children of Dune, and I agree, if Paul is the only interest Messiah is a great stopping place. But I am very very glad I continued loved Children of Dune.

Thank you so much, that's so heartening to hear lovely feedback like that! Please let me know what you think of them!

Couldn't agree more! I think some people didn't like how it challenged their experience of the fun adventure book they thought they'd read.

Great review, you convinced me to read messiah even knowing mostly how it turns out from the years of discussion around Dune.
Wow thanks so much, that's the highest praise I could get :) I think you will really enjoy it!

Nice one Ben.... I read a fair but have to admit I think I've only read one Dune book and I think it was when I was at school.
Thanks Steve! Would be worth a re-read for sure!
Thank you for the killer review!
