I fully understand what you mean John, but I do push back on the early movies like Harlem Night an Boomerang. Growing up as a teenager in Brooklyn as a black kid, it's a cultural difference. You an the Geek Buddies may say those movies were meh, but to me an I'm sure others found those movies as one of his best. But I love all the Geek Buddies takes regardless. Love you guys!!

Yea Harlem Nights was loved early culturally. In fact for years you'd a legit debate about whether it was loved more than Coming to America. Boomerang eventually became well loved too despite some of its flaws.

I’ve always loved all three of the prequels, the performances and direction get a bad rap imho.
The love story was perfect, yes, even that “I don’t like sand…” moment.
Out of any film in history, the prequels did not deserve that kind of backlash.
Love Jake Lloyd; love Hayden and Natalie’s chemistry; love, love kick ass Yoda and the special effects (including the cgi) and everything that went into making these films.

@@thecriticandtheuncle5784it so strange from my side of the aisle.
I’m completely open to any opinion when it comes to art but the hate still baffles me in a way.
It is not controversial to me to say that the prequels are great films, and not just great kids films but legitimately well made films.
The way some people see TLOTR (which I love too obviously) I also see in the prequels; these three films have a great reputation to me.
While it is true that the prequels have stylized acting and directing, it’s no different really than the originals in that regard.
These films aren’t dumb by any stretch of the imagination and the level of thought Lucas gave them is staggering.
Lucas really did have a great artistic vision for his six films imho.

Since Shannon isn't a Trek fan he has an excuse for not knowing a show set in the 32nd century isn't going back, but is indeed the furthest into the future the franchise has gone (starting with Discovery). But Rocha and Mike not catching that the old shows were primarily in the 23rd/24th centuries? How dare you, sirs, how dare you!!!! 😂

I like where they're going with Starfleet Academy for all the reasons stated on the show, AND for the likelihood Tilly will reprise her role as one of the instructors there after Discovery ends. I overall really like Discovery, despite some stuffy moments here and there, so it is a way to continue what was started there without the same intensity or divisiveness that lingered from its first season, and maybe a lot of its characters will frequently guest star as ships continue to defend the rebuilding Federation, possibly pulling cadets into situations outside of safe learning circles and simulations.
As for Kinberg on the movie side, all I hope is that they start out with a plan of where 3 or more movies would take the franchise, but tell a 1st movie that has its own definitive conclusions. I do not want them making the same mistakes of the Star Wars sequels by not knowing what they'd want to do in 8 and 9 when they penned 7. Plot for a grear solo movie, but have a plan for the continuation of the franchise since we all know that's what they want: multiple films.

Its easy to forget that when A New hope came out in 1977, the US was 80% non hispanic-white, so the US was a lot less diverse then today, especially when comparing the Asian and latino populaiton. With what Vogel was saying about the movies, I think Enterprise tv series was meant to be that post-first contact, humanity trying to find its place in the universe show? I think the tricky thing is that Trek has always been better as a tv show and only when they've established a foundation as a tv series do the movies even have a chance at working and, even then, the TNG movies were easily a step or two down from the TOS movies even if I consider TNG and TOS to be on equal footing as tv shows.

I think the SF Academy is maybe set in the Discovery timeline of the 32nd century where
    *spoilers*
something happens with the Federation and the Academy is rebuilding Starfleet's depleted core. I find it ironic that they're kinda taking the same angle as the Star Wars universe where the Jedi are depleted and Rey or Luke or whomever is going to go about rebuilding the Jedi, except, in this case, it's Starfleet.

The reason the Brat pack and the John Huges movies in general were predominantly white were due to the movies taking place in the Northern Chicago suburbs , where he grew up. Even today the area is majoriry, white, and was even more so back in the 80s. Just as one would expect a movie set in the South Side of Chiacgo to be predominantly black in the 80s too. Fortunately, the segregation of US cities is slowly changing but it is only a recent change.

When I watched Star Wars - A New Hope, I didn’t immediately think it’s an all white cast. George Lucas is right, everyone’s an alien and most people are in masks. We have the unmistakably black voice of Darth Vader at least. Could he have used a more diverse cast? maybe, but the most important thing is that we got fleshed out believable characters. Perhaps a black Director would have used a more black cast, that’s the way forward.

On the subject of George Lucas not only is he a successful old imperfect white guy but people need to keep in mind that not every comment or discussion with a reporter or publicist is a rehearsed and well reflected upon statement. People have a tendency to reduce everything to sound bites and be overly critical or analytical or what was said. It's not like he's sitting down for a 60-minute interview on the state of Star Wars and our culture, and I don't think George Lucas opinions speaks for everyone. It's really only a big deal because he's been so critically silent on the state of Star Wars other than his advocation for Bob Iger's continued management at Disney and that probably speaks more to his stock share price than anything. What he created became larger than life and now it's run by corporations and fans.
