As a life long christian and very willing to open up about it, I've made a conscious choice to not be involved with the christian music. When you take serving the lord and make a job out of it it changes things. I just want a relationship with Jesus. I stopped touring because I didn't like the person I was and didn't feel I was following Gods plan for my life. God closed that door and moved me somewhere else.

Very good comment. A paycheck is a very powerful thing. Although playing worship music seems like it could solve a lot of problems for me, I'm extremely suspicious that it could cause much BIGGER problems...

I suppose that god will honor your honesty. Perhaps, in future, you will look back and see good things that happened because of your decision. I was in that world, and later, good things happened. All that "proves" is that luck is the intersection of preparation and opportunity. Good luck to you!

I got my start in my dad's church, went on to play in a lot of clubs in the NY/NJ area back in the 90's, then back to CCM and worship and being an occasional opening act for big name CCM artists of the day. Currently working on my second studio album that has a lot of country rock vibes to it. Latest release was all original worship. Been a worship leader many times at many different churches over the years, but the freedom of being an indie artist is second to none. Since I have a regular job, I am not dependent on music for income, so I don't have to worry about answering to anyone. :) Win win. Great video, and man do I have some stories I could share, but I'll keep them vested for now. :)

I’ve been a Christian all my life, and this is accurate. There are wonderful, amazing people in the church and people I wouldn’t trust to take out my trash. But this is true of any group, organization, club, or gathering of people. The church is unfortunately not exempt from human nature. I appreciate that you cover both the good and the bad, rather than overemphasizing one or the other.

Spot on man. Find me one group of perfect people on this earth. The churches issue seems to be they put restrictions on human nature and you can’t put peoples natural inclinations into a compartment that restrictive. Now put musicians in the mix and it’s gets real colorful haha.

Yep, I played guitar about 2 years at a huge church. I was still gigging on Fridays and Saturdays so, sometimes it was ruff getting up in the mornings. I learned a lot about chords, more ambient sounds. It improved me as a guitarist. I saw my share of hypocrisy but, by and large is was a positive experience. When I left they were upset. I just said if the Lord owns the cattle on thousand hills surely he can afford to pay a professional guitar player better😂

They had 3 campuses and only the 3 worship leaders were paid. I’ve never played for money. I am a Methodist and no one gives a crap about someone having some beers. I’ve had a beer with our Pastor. My experience was not good.
I played in churches where the musicians weren't experienced seasoned musicians at all. At one church, the worship leader changed about every 6 or so months.
I was the only experienced musician who had played in bands professionally in every worship scenario.
More often than not, the songs were in a key that the worship leaders couldn't comfortably sing in..
The drummers didn't even know what a metronome was, and i got shamed for mentioning they should learn to play in time and hold the tempo..
I dealt with guitar players who were jealous because i was always being given the spotlight.
I didn't ask for any of it, and it made me regret ever giving any testimony about how i was saved..
Because every time, they begged me to join and help because i needed to have a "servants heart"..
I met a lot of really wonderful people, but at the same time, I was tormented by all that i previously mentioned.

    • @NickyV
      @NickyV  วันที่ผ่านมา +2

The both sides of the coin. Hard to win sometimes for sure. I think it all comes back to human nature trying to be confined to a set of rules that it naturally doesn’t want to fit into. Also, love the “servants heart” phrase…prime Christianese. Haha

LOL - oops, I really shouldn't laugh, since this is painfully true. Most smaller churches have horrible music and horrible musicians. Most are probably volunteers. Nothing like trying to sit in a church and squirm at the off key singing, or mix mash of volunteer music helpers. I'm stuck now, small churches are nice since they can be more personal, but then they are often weird, full of weird folks (controlling, stuck in their routines). And then big churches become a show and they have their stuck routines too. Just can't win. I think in real Bible / Jesus world, it really isn't about music performance at all, c'mon - can I hear an 'amen' from someone? Seriously - life is about true worship to the Lord through living a holy life, not about getting on stage and giving someone chills and goose bumps by the way we work the crowd. Just saying...

I auditioned for a successful Christian band in the early 90's. I had gotten saved and decided to leave the rock scene in Nashville (Yes Nashville had a rock scene even then! And there were some amazing bands back then, story for another time). I did not get the gig due to politics. I left the music industry altogether and stayed away for at least six years or more. I got tired of just the douchieness in and around the church music scene. I wasn't even that deeply involved in it, and it even I could see what was going on, and it was NOT Christ like, then you would think the church could. This and many other issues pushed me out of the church. I really do want to be a part of a church. I KNOW I loved Christ, but the hypocrisy is too much. I feel like to praise and worship section of the church has gotten out of control. I am there to hear the word of God, not to see a show and ego.

Nicky V. scores A+ and bonus points for making this video, so much appreciated - Tim from NW TN. I grew up in church (Assembly of God denomination), and I've been involved in small churches, and then all the way up to a huge 6000 seat church in AZ. I know there is huge hypocrisy in churches, and duh - it is really obvious now since big name church folk, and others are falling down embarrassingly in front of the world. Hypos are common everywhere in the world, but so sad when people say they are representing the true and living God, and then they live a trashy 'secret' life, that some insiders get to see (not those who tune in to the glossy services each week). Anyways - your insights are very much appreciated, love watching your channel. If you ever get near Gleason, TN it would be great to meet up. You are appreciated - glad you have some cool and real deal folks to deal with who treat you right, for sharing your amazing skills and experience. I don't even really follow the main stream 'christian' music stuff since it is really all show and brings no real glory to the true and living God, my opinion - and I'm sure the same with a few other odd ball people out there. Thanks Nicky....glad you made this vid. I came from the late 60's and my band was The Royal Guardsmen.....yep, Snoopy songs. I love the time but the Lord had other plans. After 20 or so years, He gave me new songs to write and play. Scared to death about what would the Christian world think of me and my kind of music. It was a light rock I guess. Anyhoo, "Transition" came to be. Started playing churches and saw the reaction of the people and bought our CD at each sing. Knowing that this came from the Lord...I was just the vessel. Some of my friends from Nashville said to do this as an Indy. OK, so I tried to get some airplay, and did get a little, but when I contacted KLOVE, I checked all the boxes except....a label...so they wouldn't play my songs. I guess I gave up after a couple of years and hoped maybe other artists would looks at them. I do get some sales on CD Baby, etc., which I appreciate deeply.

Bro, number 3 I can totally relate to, exploiting volunteers or 'employees' in the name of the Lord. I play on the worship team at my church and encounter the same thing. The unspoken expectation is you serve the Lord and the church with your gifts as an 'offering' which basically means the church gets free or next to free labor. The lead pastor is the worship leader as well so there is a power dynamic which disincentivizes people from speaking up for fear of being retaliated against or losing your spot on the team. It irks me to no end that the pastor basically operates as the spiritual guide for hundreds of people week in week out, advising people on how they need to conduct their lives, while at the same time exploiting people in the name of the Lord.

Funny how human hypocrisy always creates chaos, confusion, division, complication, and heartache. It's as if it were by design.
Too bad Believing musicians, and writers are relegated to the mess.
As a musician and writer, I chose to ignore the paradigm. I write as I am led and or am inspired, and let people decide, let GOD bless what is his.
So, in this new age I find that secular platforms , like Substack, allows me the freedom to do that. The non existence of attempting to please hypocrites, is incredibly stress free.
A major side issue with "Christian music" for me is also that it is directed towards believers and the "church" while effectively ignoring the world.
We are called to bring the gospel , the good news to the world, not play in an echo chamber.

I have been "retired" from the CCM scene for some time because I found that in the last ten years or so the musicality of it has become EXTREMELY formulaic and in my opinion has surpassed bro country as the most cliche and predictable genre. If they want me to dig in or if they have a more open ear and mindset I’ll do all I can to serve what the songs needs and try to pull something unique out and inject something fresh into the mix.

Legalism that Jesus set us free from is SO common in the church, but (in fairness) leaders are supposed to be "above reproach"... There is and should be a distinction. Conversely, for the maases, I equate much of the modern church with announcing D-Day happening tomorrow... Why are we fighting yesterday's battles? Jesus won that one! That is STILL much of the church.
Maybe that is why (it seems that) what should be the most joyous and energetic music made ends up the most benign and tepid for production?

One tag, as far as the Christian music scene in Nashville, probably my favorite is Aaron Shust, curious if you have ever crossed paths with him (you don't have to reply either way). He has a family and I believe he lives in the Nashville area. I think he is a good example of a Christian artist, but I don't know anything about the business side of things and how all that works. He is a skilled vocalist, pianist, guitarist and has written a lot of quality music - and he seems humble and has a good heart with a desire to give glory to God through his talents.

I've never quite understood the term "Christian music." It sounds sorta like "Christian grocery store," or "Christian gas station," or "Christian investment banking," or "Christian traffic light." It reminds me of a billboard I used to see here in the rural Ohio county where I live - it was an ad for a home builder company called "Cross Builders." It had big picture of a crucifix. To me it looked like a shameless sales pitch - blatantly usurping a religious image to promote a for-profit private enterprise. Nothing illegal about it, but I wouldn't trust somebody who does something like that.

    • @WhiteWolfEFX
      @WhiteWolfEFX วันที่ผ่านมา +1

It's not about selling something. Praise music or gospel music is about wishing God. It's about making a joyous noise to the Lord. That ties back into my previous comment. I am lay praise music for me to praise God and glorify God not try to "convince " you of my personal beliefs or relation with Jesus. This is exactly why I never pursued christian music for a financial gain.

    • @anthonypanneton923
      @anthonypanneton923 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@WhiteWolfEFX I get it. And I can appreciate that. But Christian music on a radio station is about selling something. Its either the belief structure, or its all sorts of other stuff to Christians who tune in because they like to listen to that music. And the billboard in the county where I live for "Cross Builders" was certainly trying to sell something.
But since you mentioned it, I'll ask you about this. You said you sing praise music to "glorify God." That's another expression I've never understood. How does a human "glorify" God? The glory of God is due to his own inherent nature. Its not something a human can heap onto, or dress God up with. So what exactly does it mean to "glorify" God. I think what is meant is "to praise" or "show honor towards" God, but its a misuse of the word. To glorify something is to give it glory or imbue it with glory. Humans do none of those things in relation to God. In fact, it works quite the other way around. Glory resides in and with God, and emanates from God.
I know there is a long tradition of using the word that way, but there are long traditions of other things too - and it doesn't always make them right.

I have never commented on a TH-cam video before, and I am not the one who you posed this question to, but if I may give my perspective……. To “Glorify God” does not imply that a human is adding anything beneficial to what or who God is. To glorify god, to my understanding, means giving Him the recognition for what one might otherwise take credit for themselves. It might be thought of as an antonym to pride and boasting of one’s deeds.

The issue is that the actual English language words do imply something else. They have simply been misused in this religious context for so long (centuries) that people take for granted that they mean something different in this context. Some of that is the result poor translation of the bible by medieval scholars from older Latin and Greek texts, which themselves (in the case of old testament books) were not in their original language.

a lot of the time the church one attends adds to what the scripture says about behavior, a good example is drinking alcohol, the scripture say not to get drunk, it doesn't say you can't have a glass of wine, beer. The scripture also says not to do something that would cause your brother to stumble, so if I am going out to eat and I know I might cause some who sees me to stumble if they see me drinking beer or glass of wine, I won't drink it, not because its sin but because I don't want to stumble. If the organized church would stick to the scripture instead of their doctrine, things would be much better and people would not get hurt. We Christians are no better or worse then anyone else, we just follow Jesus, not perfect at all

Roman Catholic side of things (yes, I'm a lifelong Catholic), and while there are professionally oriented Catholic liturgical/music organizations such as OCP (Oregon Catholic Press), and Catholic musicians & composers like Sarah Hart, Steve Agresano, etc. who create modern christian music, Catholic churches usually don't have mega sized bands. A fair amount of them don't play modern christian music (though a quite a few of them do - including the one I go to), and other than maybe an on-(church) staff music director, there are no paid musicians, and those that sing in the choir or are the actual band musicians are volunteers, such as me - yeah, I play in a church band; and have since 2019, when as a mid 50s guitarist who used to play in heavy rock bands, it became one of the few non-oldies or country music ways in my neck of the woods, to get my band fix.

I love excellence and well produced music, but often music is promoted way too far out of a region to generate money or because of a need to be recognized. It took me quite a while to figure out that ‘the American church’ has zero to do with Jesus Christ and everything to do with iconic ‘celebrity-ego driven’ narcissists (senior pastor and staff) that ‘play dictator’ in a religious club. The deeper I got into my faith, the closer I walked personally with Jesus Christ the further I got from these ‘churchy imposters’ that fill mega churches and attend to feel ‘religious’ and sanctimonious…this is exactly the same way it was in the first century till now. Churches are as ‘fallen and worldly’ as the imperfect people that lead and attend them. The only question is this- does God call you to be a part of that paradigm? Or not….if you are a ‘true follower’ of Jesus Christ you follow His leading where He will use you best…that very well may be in these ‘mega churches’ or not…each person is directed as God directs…if you feel you are ‘trapped’ and hate attending but leaving will cause disruption? Ask God…what does He want you to do?

I think given your comments are tied to church communities, there is this church culture, that when church becomes "successful" in that there is a healthy budget, growth in numbers, and ministry outreach occurring, there can be the temptation to be protective of the ministry's success. That's when things get messy. I wonder if that, at least in part, speaks to the experience of what you're sharing from a CCM musician's view point that stays hush-hush. It's hard. My thought is I would want to keep my foot in as many circles my talent will allow, so I'm not beholding to one community of professionals. Not just being tied up in one church, working on sessions, touring in the secular world or Christian world, even simple things like having other outlets or hobbies outside of the church circles. I also agree with you on the success potentially bringing different types of challenges. Thank you for commenting and checking the video out!

My favourite experiences are the "sermons" given by Pastors and of course, VERY wealthy people who subsidize 40 %
of a church's gross contributions. I've heard if for 45 years, since college. "They have been 'blessed'", "We have been 'blessed'", etc. etc. Yet, they tell everyone else to "be content". :)
Over the years I have always confronted these "jokers". I always stated, "They were NOT 'blessed'. They reaped what they sowed.in business through project planning, etc" I always reminded them that even lawfully "reaping what they sowed" was not always - - a "blessing". :)
I further confronted these duplicitous goons with the reality that if THOSE people were "content". they would not own
40 apartment buildings. They would own 10 or even "39" apartment buildings. They would not even own 10 because
they would own nine because they were "content". :). You see my point. :)
The "sales pitch" was always, "Do it for - the Lord". And I quoted Paul and stated, "If I work for Jesus....I will be paid for Jesus". :) THAT wiped the arrogant smiles off their faces. :)
There are far too many outstanding classical guitarists in the Nashville area who are "stellar technicians" and can grab a Telecaster and play far better than Brent, you, "the next door neighbor"....and others. You have shown that....what counts......is being able to do the job AND.....having the "personality type" to be able to tolerate ALL of that duplicity.and the "personality disorders" that permeate the business. :)
I ENVY your "Psychiatric Stamina" and that of others, for being able to socially tolerate the duplicity and short sightedness of so many. people. :)
Keep up the good work. :) Antoine.

I’ve heard a lot of what you are talking about. Thank you for the kind words “psychiatric stamina” is a phrase I’m going to have to incorporate into my vocabulary haha. That’s great.
Thank you for sharing and saying what needs to be said.

Aren't you worried about being labelled? e.g. Oh, not him he's a church guy. I want a Dan Huff like player

The other 80% of the recording I do is all over the map. Did a folky tune this morning. Yesterday I recorded a straightforward rock song, fingerpicking acoustic thing, and a pop tune.
Some guys are viewed as stylist that do a specific thing. I tend to get called for all the weird eclectic projects.

A few of my students' work on a worship repertoire. I think it's great seeing all this passion but, at the same time it's very cultish and uncomfortable to watch the 'salvation show' music videos supporting the tunes. They creep me out. I'm a "loner, Dottie. A rebel'. Still-Jesus Saves.
