You don't think the characters from Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja qualify for Smash? They have a games on many Nintendo platforms. I think they would make excellent additional characters. They even have a game on the switch store. You want to make another broad character type that won't ever be in Smash? I am sure I can find some character potentially related.

Honestly, when I saw the Mii Fighter trailer, I thought they were adding Reggie until I realized it was Mii that they were adding.
Everyone takes this roster for granted and believes 99.95% that they have Sakurai and his team figured out. Meanwhile, I'm over here still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor at the fact that CLOUD STRIFE made it into the game. Oh, and same with a huge chunk of the first-party characters, like Ice Climbers.
I think I have to remind you guys of this, because it's been over a decade and they're series staples at this point, but SAKURAI TURNED THE ICE CLIMBERS INTO A FIGHTER IN THE SUPER SMASH BROS. SERIES. He then did the same thing for a literal baby Pokemon, a 35-year-old NES peripheral, the generic narrator/instructor of a fitness game, a dog and duck AND OFF-SCREEN ZAP GUN trio from 1985, a pacifistic secretary who had literally never in her life witnessed any sort of physical violence, and the personification of the Game & Watch series. Oh, and a Final Fantasy character so closely associated with the PS1 that he was practically its mascot.
And, yes, a literal potted plant.
Yeah, I can sit here and come up with a fun little wish list, but everyone predicting and leaking and SO POSITIVE and all that nonsense is just kidding themselves. Look again at the roster Sakurai has created so far. Look at it! That's the doing of an absolute madman, people. You will be SO SURE that Banjo or Steve will make it in, and Sakurai's fury will be swift and just in response.

Well not all, but certain rules did have logic behind them (like the Dante, shantae, Travis etc mii costume pretty much told us those won’t be DLC for ultimate)
It also depends on the context, most of the rules for the ultimate DLC would be obsolete for character getting in whatever next smash is coming out.

In order for him to be in smash his character has to be somewhat authentic to their character and well unless you can set a level 19-20 bot it wouldn't be the case, but even then his character would have to be OP and practically unbeatable in order to be authentic.

Mr game and watch existed for a long time, and miis existed before their introduction. Therefore the existance rule has not been broken. And if you create an entirely new character specifically for smash, like taboo or Galeem, they existed in some way as a concept before their inclusion.

ATTENTION: I didn't notice that my DEVIOUS editor snuck in some slightly spoilery footage of World of Light at about 6:25 that lasts about ten seconds. If you haven't beaten it yet, look away or just sort of blur your eyes or something. Unfortunately I really can't change it at this point for various reasons. Sorry about that.
ALSO ANOTHER NOTE: One thing I wish I'd remembered to mention. Along the same lines as Waluigi and his assist trophy, being a spirit doesn't deconfirm a fighter either. They might have made all the spirits years before Nintendo even made their picks, and at the end of the day they can do whatever they want.

Don't forget the fact itself is that Sakurai never made the rules what the fans made. He only said that non video game characters can't join Smash like Goku or Shrek for example. If a character is a video game character, it has a chance to join Smash.

@TeoTeoTeo I didn't really say it did, just a funny little observation. I mean, I'm all for almost any character getting in, there's a few I'd rather not see only because people won't stop talking about how they should be in, I may be a fan of Kingdom Hearts, but I know Sora would be just annoying for those outside of the fanbase. So I've thought of characters that would be otta left field, but whatever happens I'll be happy with, just more reasons to play the game

Nah, he's kinda irrelevant. And no, just because a bunch of kids on the internet obsess over him, that doesn't mean he's relevant enough for Nintendo to want to spend resources on adding him. Nintendo sees fans asking for him as they do fans asking for Shrek--a joke. Not impossible, but you'll see Goku before a skeleton side-character from an awkward indie game.

banjo-kazooie is only a thing because of 30 year old people keep asking for it , because they grew up with it. They’re just too irrelevant, and 30-year old junks aren’t Smash’s core fanbase. Its mostly teens, who like characters like Sans, Captain Toad, Sackboy, Rayman, Crash Bandicoot, Dixie Kong, etc. (Same for Geno)

If Xenoblade 2 was too late for a character, Persona Q2 is waaaaaaaaaay too late for a character. And if it was a rule it would have to have a limit and probably not extend to twice-over spinoffs.

I was sleeping over at my friend’s house last night and his closet door was open and there was a book with a shiny cover that was reflecting weirdly in the dark and it looked like a long, pale, snarling face... and I was convinced it was Waluigi. It was like 4:00 in the morning and we were both really tired but I made my friend turn on all of the lights and look through the closet to make sure Waluigi wasn’t there (he wasn’t) and I was like shaking in fear
The only "rule" I feel thats left to be broken is the japanese game rule. Every character even the third party characters are from Japanese games. There isnt a character in smash that originates from a Western IP. So who knows maybe that rule will finally go with Banjo and Kazooie.

I don't see a (true) Western IP character coming anytime soon. Nintendo is a Japanese company, and Japanese companies (as well as Japan in general) tend to be pretty xenophobic.
Little Mac is a great example of an assist trophy that became a fighter. Assist trophies can become fighters, Waluigi included. I'm holding out for Bomberman.
Also keep in mind Little Mac wasn't promoted until the next game. If they're going to have a chance, it won't be until next game.

I believe DLC have only one absolute rule "Is it good for business and can make large amount of profit?"
If the answer is "no or not sure" then ...you know , but if the answer is yes , then that character still has a chance.
This is the only rule i truly believe in , nothing beat "good business choice".

He’s got his Plasma Rifle, a Gauss Canon, and his Pistol. He could even his BFG as his Final Smash, and even his Rocket Launcher for Smash Attacks! He could use his grappling hook from DOOM Eternal in grabs/tethers and he can always just go in with his fists!

I still say Shantae will PROBABLY not be a fighter, especially in Ultimate. She's actually been deconfirmed by her voice actor it seems. If she was going to be a fighter, then many people broke the NDA (saying they can't talk about Smash and Shantae together). Thing is, people don't just so casually break NDA typically, and Wayforward followed it strictly up to the point of her being revealed as a spirit. Then they broke it...because there was no further NDA. She's a spirit. Nothing more. Now the voice actor has broken it by saying Shantae won't be in Smash (ironically). Why people still speculate her when someone reliable says she's not coming is beyond me, but the act of those people saying she's not coming would also be breaking NDA, so you can't even say that they are trying to just make it more of a surprise by lying. You can't. I mean, you can, but you shouldn't.

Ever since smash 4 was revealed, the only character that I wanted was Maxwell from the Scribblenauts series. I mean, he seemed like a perfect fit! Scribblenauts was (at the time) a series exclusive to Nintendo consoles, and the fact that he could be given an incredibly unique move set-what with his ability to summon anything with his notebook-made him seem like he could be a really fun character. But whenever I tried to relay these ideas to people, they would just shoot them down, for reasons I don’t know. At times, it seemed like even they didn’t know the reasons why he couldn’t be in! I remember one time someone was trying to tell me Maxwell couldn’t be a fighter because he doesn’t actually do any of the fighting in the games. Like, what?! Had he even played a Scribblenauts game? Maxwell can wield literally ANY WEAPON in those games! It felt like he was trying to make excuses, not have an actual valid point of debate?
I think you really hit the mark on this video, Arlo. People need to stop being so closed minded about what characters can and can’t be in smash. Keep up the good work, my main man!

The assist trophy to fighter has happened twice in smash history. Little Mac was an assist trophy in brawl and dark samus was an assist trophy in smash 4. Waluigi being playable in smash 6 is plausible.

I think Waluigi won't make it into Ultimate, because he's an Assist Trophy there. But I wouldn't call it too unlikely that he's included in a later iteration at some point.
Also, Cloud appeared in at least Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories on the GBA, so, in a game on a nintendo console, even if not technically mainline Final Fantasy

I remember hearing that Sakurai thought about putting Nightmare from the Soul Calibur series but also considered him too violent/extreme/intense to be in the game, then again the Metal Gear series (as over the top they can be) is pretty intense. And like Arlo said, people can change their minds.
I don't think characters like Monster Hunter or Dovahkiin would appear because they are characters that the player can customize/create. Maybe their clothes & weapons can be used for Mii costumes.
I think a really great idea would be if Nintendo released official Mii fighters based on their developers that people can download, imagine Miis of Shigeru Miyamoto, Reggie Phils, Satoru Iwata (RIP) & Masuhiro Sakurai
1-Cloud was announced for a FF Explorers in the same direct that announced Cloud for Smash 4 WiiU. Also Tethrarythim absolutely counts. Like how Joker is in Persona Q2 for the 3DS which was released a long time ago in japan.
2-Nintendo choose the DLC characters but Sakurai had to aproove so something of Sakurai is in the choice process.
3-My biggest problem with Banjo is that not just nintendo has to approve the character and for Microsoft makes MUCH more business sense to put Steve there.
4-For MH, having a character that has variations means basically having to one new character per weapon unless they are purely cosmetic. If they are not, this means every weapon is a new character that needs balancing. So unless the character costs a whole fighter pass on itself, I don't see it happening =P
5- Waluigi cannot be a dlc in smash ultimate because the biggest sakurai rule besides "only videogame characters" (which was mentioned again during smash ultimate development so for this game at least still counts) is "you either is an item or a character" (which sakurai SAID in the smash direct about spring man) so better luck next game waluigi.
6- Bayonetta and Fox and Duck Hunt have lots of moves that are based on pointing guns and shooting at people. What Sakurai said beofre for snake it is because snake's weapons are realistic, so they don't want a gun that a kid can buy and hurt someone. Both Chief and Doomguy have guns that look more like nerfguns. And Corrin literally has a chainsaw
7- I would say WITH CERTAINTY that Goku is impossible because if they break the "only videogame characters rule" he would be like the 15th character in a list that nintendo would choose that includes Captain N, Mickey, Popeye and their own non videogame toys.
Platy News ROB is in smash, but I think I still think Goku is near impossible.

So.. while it may end up not being a hard rule, it so far covers every character.
To be fair, I don't think the Smash devs did a Google search to see if Cloud was on a Nintendo console and were about to hang up on Square-Enix until they found the one shitty and obscure handheld game he was on. The real reason I think Cloud is in Smash is because Final Fantasy definitely earns a spot due to its long history with Nintendo and if anyone besides Cloud repped the franchise there'd be pitchforks and torches.

I want to say that I never doubted Crash because Atari and Nintendo are rivals. It's just that they aren't friends, and when compared to other western companies including Microsoft, that seems like a good counterpoint. Plus, Crash just resurfaced. It hasn't been that long. He's possible, but he's not that likely, at least not in comparison to others. If it weren't for Rayman being a spirit, then I'd say Rayman is more likely. However, I could easily be proven wrong. As of now, Rayman is the one that is a spirit. I guessed him for base roster. I would have guessed him for DLC. No dice.

@@BanjoJD Doomguy actually showed an impressive amount of personality for an unseen character in Doom 2016. He's the embodiment of frustration and anger, and I'd love to see him show up.
I've felt that when you think of Bayonetta, you think more of a style, a flair, something evocative of movement, music. Ice-skating through a fight, alien-looking angels. It's hard to put into words, but at least when I think of Bayonetta after having played the games, my thoughts don't immediately go to guns/weapons or violence.
Snake and Bayonetta are absolutely the biggest examples to point to when arguing for Doomguy, Kratos or Master Chief and are why I don't entirely disregard their chances, but I personally think they're slim.
