Yeeeah I remember But at least you could target unlocking the moves by playing the specific characrer. However, the Mii Hats were simply just incredibly rare with absolutely no way to farm them efficiently. This broke me as a completionist when it comes to Smash. I used the hammer in the 3DS version and simply didn't bother completing the WiiU one as it looked even more impossible.

Custom moves were a cool idea. They can be brought back but sadly it may have to be scaled back significantly such as just having one alt move per character. Also another ideal is just to have an alternative final smash for each character

One alt special set+one alt FS each fighter sounds fine to me. Adds variety while being WAY less of a pain to bugfix and playbalance. And for characters with lots of similar moves, have different sets be merely cosmetic and tied to specific fighter alts. So, say, the odd Mega Man models could get the Leaf Shield and Skull Barrier while the even ones could get the Star Crash (EDIT: changed from Jewel Satellite because the sequel progression makes more sense and my dumb ass never thought to launch the Star Crash when I was younger so I'd forgotten that was a thing) and Plant Barrier.

If they had went the Mortal Kombat route, and introduced set character variations that players could know before fighting each other, I think the custom move system would have been amazing. It allows you to balance each set, while still allowing for some of the broken moves

Then again I'm not a competitive smash player but I would like to see adaptability be a skill much better shown in the scene as its probably the best fighting game to be able to showcase it.

I miss them. I can't speak for the competitive scene because I'm a casual player, but the unique examples you gave with Luigi, Bowser, Pac-Man, and the sheer diversity with Mega Man and Palutena are classics. Other examples that stood out to me personally were Mario's Scalding F.L.U.D.D. *finally* giving me a reason to use the move and appreciate the reference, and the option to make Charizard's Side-B not damage itself (albeit at the cost of some of its raw power), as I'm personally not a fan of such moves in fighting games. Plus, in the game's Trophy Rush mode, it was useful to have more means of doing immediate damage. What was NOT fun is just how much of a pain they were to collect. I would've rather had to unlock more characters, and have them come with all of their custom moves right away, or at least eliminate repeats.

Some of my favorites include a Lizal Boomerang for Link that curves on the way back, K. Rool’s crown from his beta design that…aw crap, can’t remember what it did, and Samus’ Morph Ball being changed to a jump instead of dropping a bomb, increasing her evasion.

People who had bought both WiiU and 3ds got him earlier than everyone else and there was some glitch to be able to select them. For Luigi's Fireball, it was changed to green to more differentiate it from Mario's but also as a reference to the fireballs in the Mario Bros. game, where there are red/orange fireballs that bounce on the ground and green fireballs that float in the air.
It also fits with Luigi's personality in Smash, being a quirky, different version of Mario. Mario's Fireball is a straightforward and easy to use ball that bounces on the ground and falls in the air, while Luigi's moves completely different and stays in the air.

I personally loved custom moves, my brothers and I would make up possible custom moves back when we were playing Melee so when we finally saw them announced for Smash 4 we were ecstatic, but...
Actually getting those custom moves was a bit of a hassle, which made it feel not right to play as. Which is another point for your argument. It seems they realized how difficult of an idea this was and though they finished it, they didn't want to make it front and center, so they made using these new toys a bit of a drain to even unlock.
I can easily imagine a "character level-up" system, if they still wanted it progression based, where each level would unlock a new custom move, similar to the Amiibo system instead of... completely random.

I've always been a fan of the character customization options, and was admittedly pretty disappointed to see them cut. I won't lie, though; I don't blame them one bit. It was a fun little gimmick without much bearing on casual gameplay, and must have been Hell to make.
Still, it's cool to see it dissected like this. I've never been big on the competitive scene, so it was interesting to gather new perspectives.
I can't help but wonder why competitive rules allowed custom moves, though. It's way more work and brutally unbalanced.

I agree, heck, spirits would work to justify the custom moves even. So sad they cut the feature, and all the calls of 'oh no, competitive pls broken' then... they can ban them?. I never understood the sentiment of 'yes but it might affect the competitive balance' as an excuse to remove or nerf a feature that is optional and can just be disabled at will

With all the time they saved on not making custom moves for all the characters, it's a real shame they couldn't just add a few more to the mii fighters. They don't need completely original ideas either, just make moves inspired by other fighters. - Then when the "premium" mii costumes were released: Sans, Cuphead, Bomberman, they should have created 4 new moves for each of these, special made with these characters in mind (but available for any costume to use), so you have an official Cuphead moveset for example (neutral and side special being bullets like Megaman).

I say the Luigi IceFireball and the Bowser Fireball that worked similar to the fireball in Super Mario Bros should have replaced the moves they were custom moves for in my opinion. Also, I'd love for those two moves to be officially included in Smash Ultimate, because Super Smash Brothers Ultimate mods can get you banned from Nintendo online

  • @D_YellowMadness

I imagine the problem with giving Luigi iceballs is that being able to freeze people that easily would give him a braindead way to combo his neutral special into all of his other moves, meaning he could only be balanced if everything else about him was terrible. That & it just doesn't make sense thematically because he's never been associated with ice.

  • @StarlightNkyra

Honestly, I think it would've been really cool if some of these special moves replaced their original versions in ultimate (Palutena aside, since a lot of her custom moves did get brought back.)
Luigi with the ice flower would make sense to be a reference to new super mario brothers (rather than the arcade games.)
Toon link with a big bomb that has different physics would make him feel less like an echo fighter of young link and more like an original character.
My point is that some of these special moves would be much better suited for the character than the original move.

Of course custom moves was a thing on the 3DS only…I swear, some games on the DS and 3DS were so innovative and yet the features in them never came back. Remember the other babies like Baby Warriors in Yoshi’s island? No? That’s cause it was only in one game!

3:46 from what I have heard many times, the big workload was decided by the hire ups. Saying “these people were passionate” is not brushing a big flaw in game companies under the rug, for melee they had to get it out by the release of the console, and “you think they would have learned their lesson” is very insensitive as I think this was also a decision they didn’t make. Although I may be wrong I am basing this belief off of other game companies and past circumstances.

I firmly believe that Luigi should’ve had iceballs replace his green fireballs. Maybe buff both Mario and Luigi’s fireballs.
Mario’s fireballs deal a tiny fraction of dmg over time effect, like, 0.6% per second, and lasts for 3 seconds.
Luigi would get the iceballs, and they would lightly slow the opponent down for 5 seconds.

Additionally having Squirtle and Ivysaur as well as Charizard would add to the difficulty in programming. 80+ characters * 4 specials each * 3, that would be over 960 moves. Custom Moves were broken asf, so it's not that bad that they're gone. If they bring them back in the future, they should do it like in Mortal Kombat, introducing some character moveset variations to choose from.

    • @Aldenfenris
      @Aldenfenris 2 ปีที่แล้ว

And why is it a problem if they are broken? they are optional, you can disable them if you rather not use them and still play normally. It is like someone going 'oh no, remove items from the game, some are broken!'. But they don't, since they are just optional and you can toggle them out. Just because they might cause trouble for tournaments or for some people, doesn't mean they can't be enjoyed just for people wanting to have a fun time playing solo or against the cpu.

From a casual perspective what ruined custom moves for me was the pain to unlock them across two games. Dude, get this, custom moves were originally introduced in Kid Icarus Uprising, alongside the Risk/Reward difficulty slider and other features, seriously, the resemblance is uncanny.
Anyway, Kid Icarus Uprising, just so happens to be REALLY freaking hard to complete, as in, teeth grindingly hard.
But I liked the game to much, so I decided to put up with it, and you know what happened? I completed every objective, every challenge they threw at me, spent actual hours just trying to craft the perfect weapon and in the end... I got a 99% competition because I didn't get every custom move... that are randomly given to you by the game.
That's depressing! But to be fair, I hear that the main incentive of the multiplayer was to unlock those moves, so maybe I was expected to play that more often?
But how many dice rolls would it take? There's literally hundreds of those things, and I'd be hoping for it to land on a very specific one, hell no!

    • @julianx2rl
      @julianx2rl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I will recognize that the concept was far better implemented in Kid Icarus, as they served the purpose of not only making Pit more powerful throughout the campaign, but also to make each player in multiplayer more unique, since each would have a different set.
They probably tried to replicate that in Smash, but in Kid Icarus only had Pit, and the point of custom moves was to make what you wanted out of him.
But in Smash, there's already 50+ characters, with more moves than you can even come up with, so why would you spend time customizing a character to say... hit harder, when you can just pick a heavyweight?
Not to mention the fact that Smash is a party game, meaning that every set has to be built on the same console on the spot, as opposed to Kid Icarus where each player would have their sets ready on their own system.
I know that the point was for you to make your own custom character in the 3DS version, and then port it over to Wii U for parties, the whole Home and Stadium thing Sakurai kept talking about, but who in their right mind ever did that?!

  • @evenglare

They should cut down on the goofy modes. Cut down the roster size of the next smash, then add unique and meaningful custom moves and finishers and stuff like that. Personally I'd prefer it to be a 1 on 1 games, akin to a traditional fighter say MK, Soul Calibur, or Street FIghter, but still retain that smash bros uniqueness with its stages, and ease of play without having to master crazy button inputs.
Have a solid roster of the main franchises, Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Kid Icarus. Do DLC set packs like a Hyrule DLC which adds like 3 character or something and some stages. Just focus the next game more, and put more love into each character and a large variety of movesets. Fighters have been doing this for years, and especially stuff like MK11 has done it to some degree of success.
Dunno just my thoughts. The next smash really needs to pull back, be more.... intimate i guess. We've already got the ultimate traditional game, now its time to try something very new and still retain the spirit.

The problem with specials is that most of them are just 3 categories: balanced speed/mobility and power/knockback (the default option), faster speed / more mobility but less damage/knockback or none at all, and lower speed / mobility but more damage/knockback. Aka: default, fast and weak, and slow and powerful. Of course not all moves fall into this, but most do. Though I feel like megaman had the most effort put into his specials because none of his specials fall into these categories (besides arguably down special).
