i think what also sells this story, for me, and probably a whole lot more, we go in expecting a story about a list of rules to follow when dealing with x, y, and z, this story however, pulls a complete 180 with an outbreak not long after, and with the similarities to coronav 19, makes it all the more uncanny valley, or perhaps for some, makes the real thing, all the more scary.

As a nurse this is hurting my feelings and I’m not even through more than 16 minutes of the story. 1) if someone having stomach pain don’t give cold water that makes the pain worse 2) if the patient says his pain is a 10 you do not give ibuprofen ( that’s like giving him a skittle) we would immediately be starting IV pain relief ( especially if the man is a werewolf I would assume he would need stronger IV pain relief than a human regardless of his past medical history of drugs ) . Sometimes, I hear them enough to figure out what they are, but there are odd ones that really make me wonder, this story isn't necessarily helping with that, lol.

Normally, I get a private room, but one time, I had a roommate who was an older gentleman who was recovering from a hardcore surgery. They operated on his back, but they went through the front to get there. It ended up being a several hour surgery. He was in my room for 3 days, and he had uncontrollable hiccups the entire time, even in his sleep. Between the nonstop hiccups and the code calls, I thought I might lose my mind. The nurse said his hiccups were a side effect of the prolonged procedure he had done, but I wanted to smother him with a pillow.

Here's a list of the most common codes. Keep in mind that some of the less common codes change from state to state, these are the ones used in Pennsylvania.
Rapid response: any medical emergency short of a code blue. This can be anything from someone passing out to a seizure. Every department has a designated person to respond (cardiology, respiratory, IR, xray, lab, pharmacy, neurology, etc). This ensures not everyone comes running (and they all do run!), but also time isn't wasted deciding who goes.
Code blue: cardiac or respiratory arrest or both
Code grey: unruly or combative person. This could be for either a patient or visitor.
Code silver: hostage or active shooter (I've also seen purple used)
Code pink: baby abduction. Make yourself comfortable because you will not be permitted to leave until it's found. It's rare for this to last long since all baby ID bracelets usually have chips that will activate the pediatric doors to lock if they get too close to them or are cut off.
Code amber: missing child. Same as above. You ain't going nowhere until little Suzie is found.
      Code yellow: missing adult patient
      Code Brown: chemical hazard
      Code orange: mass casually event
      Code red: smoke or fire
      Code black: bomb threat
      Code green: hospital evacuation
Hope this helps. Hospitals can be scary places, but there are emergency contingencies for practically any situation you can imagine, and everyone from the doctors to the janitors are trained in what their specific rolls are.

@@mjc8248 I totally understand why patients can hear codes and worry that it's related to them. If it's any comfort, just know that if you are hearing a code call, 99.99% of the time it's not going to be for you. Most of the time those patients aren't conscious or aware of the codes at all. I can't say never because nobody who works in a hospital *ever* says something never happens because as soon as you do, it's guaranteed that it will! Yes, we are all superstitious, even those who won't admit it!😂

Is this was can be described as ( or almost) existential horror ?
I've never came into contact with any "creepy pastas" - despite for gross overcooked, cold - water -rinsed spaghetti ....
But the inevitability, the knowledge that one leak will wipe out the population, human or not.
(Maybe Vamires could burrow themselves for 1000 years - but then would have to drink from - what? )
It unites in some way with what you would usually fear because suddenly there is something WAY worse out there - uhm in there, uhm no in yoy ? And if not there are the ones that will shoot no matter what , just to be rather safe than sorry...The enemy is visible and invisible.
I'd definitely have an existential crisis then and there..
I need to read the definition.
      Edit: Done.
So the short description basically said, it
means confronting the audience with the most basic fears, like darkness, loss of control, a very "primal" , impulsive fear humans had and still v
have to some degree ( like too much in phobias) , but what also kept us alive XYZ thousand years ago and our lizard brain still reacts to.
A threat too big or new to understand , nor control in any way we can come up with until it might be too late. ( Sometimes intermixed with a bit of cosmic horror - like...
"The Thing", "Cabin Fever", etc., would that be a correct guess?

Damn, this story is excellent from every angle. Its characters are truly human. Mehan is set up initially to be this unfeeling, utilitarian antagonist to the MC's idealism, but each time we see her, while she's doubling down, the cracks start to show in what's really a facade. Her character is incredibly tragic because her infection breaking her front makes you realize she's always been putting up a front because its all she can do to keep going, because she knows what happens if she fails. Also, I adore the line, "I'm with one already", when Mehan tells Jamie to go help the patients. While Jamie came to understand why Mehan had taken the measures she did, it still shows that he didn't let the experience kill his empathy like Mehan did. And Artie making it out alive was such a wonderful reward for making it through the harrowing moments of this story. "That damn take-out", indeed, my friend, "that damn take-out", indeed.

I love this author's shared universe, I always like anything where supernatural beings exist alongside humans and just try to survive, I think it resonates with me as I'm both gay and mentally ill, both things that will get you treated like a real-life monster by plenty of people, when really I'm just a normal person trying to live my life like anyone else (well, "normal" is pretty relative here, but I'd like to think I'm only weird in a harmless way), so sometimes it kind of feels like being some kind of "fae" living alongside but still separately from the normies (also, I'm a recovering addict, which makes me relate to vampires in particular, because there really have been times in my life where I had to make a choice to not steal from or otherwise hurt others just to alleviate my own suffering, I always came back to the conviction that it was *my* problem, and I wasn't going to bring anyone else into that mess, so yeah, kind of like being an ethical vampire who has to always find ways to get what I needed without hurting innocents)

What an amazing, intense, sad, well written story. This author truly captured so much about the human condition even though this had supernatural elements the hmanity factor was there throughout. It showed how true horror is so much more than jump scares and scary monsters. True horror can be fear and what that fear does to us and, in some cases, the monsters that it creates of us. It must be so horrible to have to make difficult decisions that are nonetheless necessary. I hope we hear much more from this author because they really did a fantastic job. The narration was phenomenal and really put such fine touches on this story. As usual this narration brought the story to a whole new level. Thank you and the author very very much!!

Now I was always seen as the oddball of the group, so folk were already expecting something unusual from me. So I kinda wrote a small "rules" story all about humans surviving supernatural encounters. The catch that made this stand out and put on display? It was called "How to date a supernatural creature". I should maybe consider digging that old thing up and redoing it

This was fantastic. Honestly, the supernatural element could be forgotten entirely here, and the story would still be one of horror. To my knowledge, there is only a single pathogen with 100% mortality, rabies, and at least there are some protocols that can be used to save lives, precious few though they may be. This story invokes the fear of a weapons-grade biological outbreak. The icing on top is that you can, if you read between the lines, get the idea that this was an intentional attack. Now I can only wonder about the motive behind this outbreak; was this some hunter of the supernatural? A would-be vampire hunter or werewolf hunter? Do they have any idea how much pain and suffering they unleashed? I think it is the best stories that make you ask these kinds of questions, so this is definitely a winner for me.

This may sound harsh, but if these patients have literally no chanse of survival no matter what is done to them and the hospital only serve as a waitingroom for death at the moment, would it not be safer and more ethical to euthanize the victims and not force them to die in such a painful and scary way? I mean, they literally are borderline shoving living patients into the cremation ovens, surley it is more moral to make sure they are dead first?

This a great story and shows how great you are at narrating. The scariest part is that we've had true horror stories that make this a just a bad day. Don't forget the black death plague in Europe that killed from 75 to 200 million people. There are some things out there that are also terrifying as well.

500 million people were estimated to be on the planet at the time and officially its 75 million that died meaning it killed nearly a 5th of all humanity.

I didn’t come into this story expecting the weight of it all. What a haunting story. Great job narrating it.

Excellent, excellent job. I really felt everything the narrator was feeling.
