      You don’t introduce water to a wooden instrument. Besides most guitar especially older ones are painted with gel coat bcs it’s thickens hides the wood grain. These resins are impervious to just about any medium you throw at it so just an adhesion promoter like bulldog will do fine. Being acrylic paint that’s poured it will not last long bcs acrylic paints don’t use an activator to harden so it can be liquified if come in contact with water unless it gets a sprayed clear but not brush bcs it will pull and smear the already dry paint. Guitars are a whole other craft within itself. Getting as little as one coat of clear inside the neck socket will make it difficult to get the neck to fit back in place so that needs to be taped off too. I’ve done hundreds of guitars in my. I don’t think this guitar meant anything to her.

    Nice job. Here are a few pointers that will help you for future projects..
    For starters, you should sand the guitar down before you do anything else. Reason being is because if you don't, then the paint won't have anything to stick to, and will make it more prone for the paint job to come off.
    Also, if you're doing a complete guitar in this method, start off with the back first. The reason for this is because you will need something to hold up the guitar above the work space when you work on it, like stands or something like that: just like how most people do a fluid painting on a canvas. They keep the painting stood above the table or workspace so that the excess paint can drip off and you can scrape the sides off so that the extra drippings on the guitar doesn't pull the rest of the paint off when drying.
    Contrary to other comments here, in terms of taking the hardware off, it depends on the model of the guitar. You chose a Strat body in this video, which from experience is the easiest guitar body to do a fluid painting on, since the pickguard and the bridge are right next to each other and do not have a gap like most other guitars, which meant that you didn't have to take off the bridge or the pickguard.
    Some people here say you should take off the neck before pouring. Just take some green painters tape and tape off some of the neck, including the front where the fretboard is. I say green painters tape because when taking the tape off, it doesn't leave residue or any sticky stuff on the guitar.
    Why tape the neck and the fretboard? Because it's better if after you're done doing the pouring, you tilt the excess paint off and even the paint job out that way. You will need something to hold onto that is attached to the guitar to help you tilt it, and you don't want paint on the neck or the fretboard.
    Another tip. DO NOT do this kind of art on high end guitars unless you end up becoming very experienced with it. Do cheaper guitars so that if you mess up, you don't feel too bad about it.
    After the paint job on the back and the front are done and completely dry, take it outside and spray it with a clear gloss spray. This helps make the colors pop and protects the paint job. You could also use wax on it too.
    The last pointer: ALWAYS test the guitar before and after to see if any big changes to the sound occurred and to see if it still works. Bonus points if it still works.
    Try not to sell them, as most people just see it as a guitar and not as a piece of art. Also, doing this kind of art on a guitar greatly decreases the value of it, unless you've made a name for yourself in art. Guitars like the one you did are mainly for art exhibitions. I've tried to get my guitars in a regular art gallery and they wouldn't take them because they would be "out of place".
    Thats the thing: there's such a niche market for this kind of guitar art that it's not even funny.
    Do not give up because a few people disapprove of it. Everyone has different tastes and some people do not like or can't comprehend different or "weird" things. Again, most people will just see your project as a guitar, and not as a piece of art.
    I wish you luck, and keep going at your art.

    I would have did this on a custom guitar builds after painting the body before assembly, however I would have not covered the edges instead I would have left them as draping, let them dry and then lightly lined the inside of the edges with gold paint, after I was finished I would have applied epoxy resin over the top of it to seal it, and help it giving a glossy finish when it gets polished.

    Q: how would one do a full paint job like this? As in the back as well?
    Q: what was the reason for leaving hardware on? Was it because of the flow of paint? If so, would removing it then covering the cavity with a cover work just as well? Did you have any issues with paint leaking into electronics?
    Q: how thick was the layer of paint? Does it effect weight and tone?

    • @darthjarjarbinks8953
      @darthjarjarbinks8953 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can answer all three.
      1. You would hydrodip the guitar after you remove the existing finish (if one is already on), sand, and prime. Then you would do the dip.
      2. The hardware should have been taken off. If you plan on doing something like this, don’t take shortcuts like this. If you do decide to do this and remove the hardware, make sure you also clear coat it, whether it be lacquer, nitro, or poly (preferred finish). Don’t use oil because it is generally not as hard (hence why I recommend poly) and it most likely won’t dry very well.
      3. Don’t obsess over tone. The weight should be just fine and hardly affected at all. Anything you do to a guitar will affect the weight and tone of the instrument. The differences from before and after are so minuscule that you would not be able to tell the difference.
      I recommend that you buy a cheap guitar and experiment on that. Even I as a luthier of 25 years still have test guitars. Never try something you don’t know on your favorite guitar. If you don’t know what you are doing though and don’t have the means to execute something like this, then I suggest you take it to a shop (just not guitar center; anything but them [although they probably wouldn’t know how to do it anyways] ).

    Nice job! Very aesthetically pleasing! I want to try this, but I am concerned about how the thick acrylic will smother the natural (and desirable) resonance of the body. Also, because acrylic is essentially a soft paint, I am concerned about the durability of the finish when I perform. To that end, I would probably want to cover it with resin, which would further dampen the body. Any thoughts on this?

    • @juliadoverart5907

      Gregory Hartline thank you so much!! I know exactly what you mean. I haven’t covered mine in resin but o spoke to someone who has. I’m not sure if his was an ornament or used it to play. I wouldn’t think it would effect the sound but with an acoustic 100% it would change the resonance. Let me know how you go 😁

    • @doc221978
      @doc221978 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For durability, resin would be much better. It is already being used in the building of some electric guitars(and a resin pour on an acoustic here on TH-cam). In my opinion, acrylic is too soft of a finish to use on a player, but for decoration it's fine.

    Are you using these as just art pieces? Or are they still being played? Asking because I'm curious how much it effects the tone.

      Artorius these are just art pieces. The paint won’t effect the sound but it will with an acoustic guitar 😉

      I recently did my son’s electric guitar and he loves it. He removed the hardware and I did mix of about 6 colors. We then painted the back one color and when it was dry, I put two coats of Minwax gloss. He he plays it and the sound is great. I’m not saying it will work for every musician,

    yes it DOES look good...i' would have presanded (as so many others suggest) and clear coated thickly.....back in the day we'd smear lighter fluid on guitars and light 'em up for a similar effect...but as everyone else has pointed out you have made the guitar *into* ART and it is no longer a functional musical instrument...it literally is just a very few screws to do it in a way that does not harm the functionality...plenty of youtube vids on guitar dissassembly...then you could sell your art as a "guitar" not as "just art"...either way i am going to try something similar so thanks for the ideas and tips.

    Hi Julia! Thanks for sharing your art, the result is amazing :) I want to do the same, to paint my guitar with acrylics, but I'm worry cause I don't know what kind of varnish or laca to use to protect the instrument. Most people tell me that a "normal" laca will spoil my painting and I should use based wated varnish... but I won't be able to give a mirror finish aspect I guess. What do you recommend me to uso after painting? Thanks so much in advance :)

    • @juliadoverart5907

      Alvaro Fuhr thank you so much!! If you want a mirror finish I’d use a resin. Chroma has some excellent varnishes that don’t effect the paint 😉

    What about the back?

  • @kenrussell1093
    @kenrussell1093 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I normally don't criticize too much, but why not take the hardware off? An unsanded finish will not allow the paint to adhere to it, and if you were going to use tape anywhere, it should have been to mask off one side and then the other. Properly done, front and back will be seamless, without any drips or runs to mar the finished product. Then after drying (for way more than 4 days) spray with poly-urethane. If you don't COMPLETELY dry the finish, the poly-urethane will get an orange peel effect, and ruin the whole job. Not that I am the go to guy for pour painting a guitar, but these are obvious, common sense steps. I do guitars this way, and they come out very nice. Please accept my comments as constructive.

      I don’t think it’s jealousy. It is amazing art for sure. The guitar is a pretty cheap trash one to start with. I’m guessing it was meant for arts sake not to be played. So yeah nah yeah I recon guitarist and musicians get peaved a bit!
