So I thought I would share one thing I did that I found quite helpful; as it was thickening up during the drying but not completely dry I would take toothpicks once in a while and push them very gently all the way through each screw hole which actually left very clean and perfect edges. I think it will work out very nicely in the cleanup once it’s all the way dry. It looks very perfect. The details in the paint close up is spectacular!!!
I hoped you would cast one with a mold . The outcome is very beautiful . But with a mold you could have done some painting or including thin objects in it
I've watched all your videos, I'm about to paint my brothers guitar but not sure what medium to use with my acrylic paint, Flotrol, glue, liquitex? Any suggestions? I'll definitely resin when done but what did you use for the initial pour? Thanks! Love your technique!
can you tell us how does the paint in the cup not all mix together into one color but yet stays seperate in the pour...and looks like I could do this on a guitar body as well....

Does it matter what type/quality of paint you use? Also what is your suggestion for a good resin to seal the paint job? Would a clear topcoat using spray paint work just as well?
I tend to shop by budget over feature, so my top choices vary. If you use art-grade supplies (as opposed to craft supplies), you'll get better pigment density and more vibrant color. However, the cost is also much higher. When looking for a resin, shop for resins with working times of 30 min - 4 hours, self-degassing, self-leveling, non-yellowing, and non-shrinking qualities. Resin is only absolutely necessary for utilitarian surfaces that will be subject to lots of friction like tables, guitar pours, etc.

Epoxy resin is used to make floors, tables, and boats. You can walk on it, eat, drink a beer, wash it, let it on the sun. The most protective coat for a guitar! Climate change will affect wood more than epoxy.

Any resin works, go for self-degassing, non-yellowing resin for the best results. The paint is acrylic craft paint, either Americana brand or Craft Smart
It's all subjective, but here are a couple suggestions: If you want to mimic the black/brown gradient of the body, you could do a dutch pour with just white, black, and a matching brown/amber paint. You could also contrast the darker tones on the body with bright colors, maybe something complimentary with yellow to bring people's eyes to the pick guard
Right, as long as the resin is self-degassing and self-levelling, you shouldn't have any issue with bubbles. If you do need to use a torch to free some bubbles, don't point it directly at the resin to avoid issues with the curing process
I can't wait to try this too!, didn't know I could remove the pick guard without removing the term and pickups...seems easy now. Remember to sand it good so the paint adheres and won't come off. Oh, duh, you posted this 2 months ago😄, how'd it turn out for you?
How long does it take the paint to dry on the pick guard on average? And how about the drying process for the resin on average? I’m not exactly sure how long to wait before I install it back on my guitar. Thanks
It can vary depending on things like humidity and temperature. For me in a desert climate, paint dries faster and resin cures quicker, about 6 hours for paint and maybe 20 min faster for resin than what's listed on the bottle. If you want to be safe, leave it for 24 hours in between steps
does it feel any different, like does pouring resin on a electric guitar pickguard changes the way it feels, or is the difference barely noticeable from a non-customized pickguard?
The resin is a bit thicker, so the surface is just a bit closer to your hand when playing. Might take a minute to get used to, but it's nothing dramatic
Spray varnish will work well to preserve painting as a decoration, but it's not very effective at preventing things like scratches. If you plan to be playing your guitar actively, resin will be a much better long-term protection
The paints are Craft Smart and Americana brands. The resin I bought is no longer available, but look for self-levelling, self-degassing, non-yellowing resin.
Drying time will vary a bit based on paint thickness, altitude, humidity, temperature, etc. It could be anywhere from 5 hours to nearly a day drying on nonporous plastic. I'd give yourself at least a day or two time to prepare the pour and the resin coating to protect the paint
There'll be a small increase in height and weight, but nothing that'll make the guitar unplayable. Resin shouldn't be very viscous and thick, so it'll be pretty thin. The paint will be even thinner, practically unnoticeable
@@SouffleArt thanks! I'm considering spreading the resin with a brush, but I'm more worried of missing the smooth surface than having a thicker pickguard.
That's understandable. You can also always sand it down and use a series of fine grit polishing sandpapers to restore the gloss, that's just a little labor-intensive.

Yeah you'll want to use resin specifically to protect it. Thin coats like a clear coat or regular varnish/ sealer won't protect the paint from the scratching motion of a pick while playing

Thanks Christine! Personally I prefer floetrol since it comes in larger volumes. That'll be helpful, especially on a larger piece like that

Yeah, it'll scuff a little just like any standard pickguard, but if you're using a resin rated for outdoor use it'll be very durable

Depends how hard you strum your guitar. If you play very hard and your pickguard has lots of scratches, spray sealer won't protect the paint enough
Try blocking the soundhole with a balloon, and squirting naphtha around the edges of the old pickguard for easier removal.

Did you get any air bubbles on that resin? I’m guessing because of the material you didn’t torch it

Yes, the epoxy resins that you can use will all have two-part compounds. They should be sold together whenever you buy a resin

Where’s the best place to find the epoxy for this?
I always buy resin on ebay. Look for self-degassing, self-leveling, non-yellowing resin and you're all set if it has those three qualities.

You shouldn't need any sand paper
