300 Gallon Rubbermaid Tubs - an ideal habitat for your turtles!

- We created a turtle oasis in our small PA yard! We are using the space we have to create turtle habitats that not only look great, but provide our turtles and tortoises with all they need to thrive.
In this video we use two 300 gallon rubber-maid tubs we purchased from Davis Feed Mill, a local feed shop in Bucks County.
We purchased from Amazon:
Alpine Corporation Eco-Sphere Energy-Saving 1400GPH Pond Pump with 33-ft. Cord a.co/d/89IRXST
VIVOHOME Pressurized Biological Pond Filter with 13-watt UV Light, Up to 1600 Gallons a.co/d/2GZKk5H
The pond plants are Parrots Feather purchased from The Hidden Reef in Levittown PA

We used filtered pool sand purchased from a local pool shop, rocks and cinder blocks from Fairless Hills Garden Center and Home Depot.
We covered the tubs with netting to keep the birds from flying off with any of our critters.
Hibiscus plants and ferns surround the tubs, and provide some shade and decor.

thanks for the helpful video. how deep did you put the sand for them to hibernate in over the winter? i'm in Snow Shoe, PA and want to move our 7" red-eared slider into a new pond in the backyard instead of his 55 gallon thank which he's outgrowing. i will probably go with a liner instead of a tub due to the expense ($450 for a tub!). do yo have to worry about heating it or do you just let the water remain what the air temp is? read some bad reviews on the pump. doesn't sound like they last long.
What wonderful habitats for your turtles! So gratifying to see the progress to the end. Beautiful. I’m also from PA and wondering if they winter outside? I guess the water doesn’t freeze solid? Also just a suggestion to shout vs talk as the filters are loud 😂😂. Cheers and beers.

And yes! They stayed out all winter. We keep aeration going only. We are always nervous but they did great! Where in PA are you?

I have a stock tank I want to use for something like this…. Is it ok to be full sun? Or should there be shaded areas
Hi. We have ours near our house so they will get shade later in the day. They also get shade from plants and hides in the cinder blocks we use for the backing areas.
Any suggestions for creating a screen lid? I want to put this in my basement, but need to prevent my cats from jumping in.
Hi! You can make a frame with 2x3 and attach chicken wore or another type of netting to it and lay it over top
I’m in PA too! I’m looking to do something like this, but inside. What did you use as a basking dock? Any suggestions for a way to cover it with screen if inside (to keep my cat out). What types of plants did you add? What filter are you using?
We use cinder blocks with flat pacers on top. The cinder blocks provide hides under water and the flat pacers serve as basking spots. We also try to find branches to drape across the pavers to make it more natural. Will find the filter we used and send you the name.
