Example of songs that use these 4 chords: • Axis of Awesome - 4 Fo...
In this beginner lesson, we look at a very common chord progression which uses four chords. These 4 chords are used in hundreds of songs!
In the key of C the chords are as follows: C, G, Am, F
Practice playing around with these chords to get them under your fingers. You should use different inversions and voicings around the piano.
Once you are comfortable with the chords, you can add some timing and rhythm. Start by playing each chord and count 4 beats for each one. Then you can begin adding in different patterns such as split chords and arpeggios.
Once you can do all of this, you can either sing the melody of songs over the top or work the melody out by ear, and play it in your right hand whilst playing the chords in your left.

Finally a piano teacher who doesn't have verbal diarrhoea.. I mean to say, someone who teaches at a sensible pace so the information actually has time to sink in! I learned more from this than most other hour long lessons.
Awesome stuff :)
Chicken Nuggets same
I find that most piano teachers on TH-cam are excellent in their own way. Haven't yet come across one that I didn't learn from. It is possible to praise one without needing to put down all others. Your base language reveals more about you than about them.
EDIT: Glad to see you deleted the part of your comment that insulted all other piano teachers on TH-cam. If your own work is good enough it will sell on its own merits and there really is no need to discredit the work of others.
Chicken Nuggets lmfao
Chicken Nuggets completely agree about "verbal diarrhoea" I watched some hours long videos which contained 2min of useful information. This was certainly most useful video I have seen so far and completely free of useless twaddle.
Awesome Tutorial
I like how he teaches on a pace where beginners are given the chance to absorb his teachings! Sometimes a pupil feels that there's so much info to take in and it can become discouraging indeed! Ofcourse people can learn plenty from various/different teachings, and it depends on each pupil how much they're willing to practice & spend time on their own! All teachers are valuable indeed!
Over 44 years of my life... I was spending thousands for someone to do this for me as I create melodies in my head. I'm so very grateful for this. Thank you so very much! God bless you!
Same!!! I never thought I could play by ear but learned each key very early on!
My god, music is so freaking magical
Just wait until you get into actual music theory!
We will
It truly is
Floris Kolder I’m gonna be taking that class soon 🤪

Two weeks into piano after 30 years away. I am a professional drummer for 40 years and love the piano. This lesson was just what I was looking for. Thank you.
God bless u all in Jesus christ name Ameeeeeeeeen... From Panjab Jhelum Pakistan Hallelujah.
Piano graphic with highlighted keys is profoundly helpful. I cut and paste these chords into OneNote and then
use for practice. I really like working with your videos! Thank you.

4:53 "Someone Like You" by Adele
5:39 "Demons" by Imagine Dragons
6:22 "Flashlight" by Jessie J but just the chorus tho
MJ Ismail 4:53 can be literally anything. it can be billionaire - bruno mars, im yours - jazon mraz, perfect - ed sheeran, literally anything
but yeah, i pretty much think the same song choices as u lol
@@JoseJaure The chord progression is basically "Let it Be" by The Beatles too.
remember to be realistic - you'll have to put in a bit of work whichever system you choose for learning piano I have spent months studying teaching yourself piano and discovered an awesome resource at BestWay2LearnPiano.blogspot.com

I got. my keyboard ever last week and im 55. I have gone through maybe 20 teachers videos so far and kinda getting discouraged and confused. I find your method of teaching is best for me. your pace is slow enough, clear enough and I feel I dont need to pause as much to try to get it to stick in my mind. thanks
Find a song you want to learn and play 30-60 minutes a day and do it for a week then see how much youve learned
I'm 75 and trying to relearn the classics with a teacher, but I definitely want to learn this method. Hang in there.
I started learning a week ago and thought I would never "get it". I thought I'd just plonk around for making music but never understand it. I learned the chords for Kylie's Can't Get You Outta My Head, and for Britney's Toxic well enough to play them along with the songs, and now I can't stop practicing and learning because of your videos!
One year on , how are you going now .?
That more advanced method was amazing, i need to practice it.
Finally someone I can truly learn from, I just started playing around recently and I watch beginner tutorials that went too slow, nice pacing here all around
Key of C Major
C
G
Am
F
(Common- f major & g major)
-Inversions: any order as long as it’s the same note.
-Left hand can use any note that is used in the right hand that time
-Split chords: broken up and alternating between the parts
-appregios alternating between each note lowest to highest
The inversions change the thing.
Another easy pattern is playing the lowest note then the hightest then the Midlands then again the highest and then repeat the whole thing ☺
Finally a video and quality teacher that speaks clearly and doesn’t use the cut method and fly through the material…love all of your videos!!
Thanks Brian!
I’m a beginner and u helped me A LOY TY!!!
Fabulous instruction. I, V, VI, IV in every key really give you a lot of possibilities
It certainly does :)
AWESOME, Im beginner been watching many video this the best and easy to learn. your video help me alots. Thank you
Can i just say I know these chords very well, been into music for a few years, but this video taught me so much in how to express my playing using the chords..really appreciate how you made it so much easier to learn.
Easiest piano lessons ever. I have watched other channels, none come close to Piano Pig's method of teaching, its simplicity, and direct approach to hands on playing. I have subscribed and plan to watch all your videos. I wish I had you as my piano teacher 20 years ago.
Thanks Jacob! I appreciate that 🙏🏻
This is brilliant! I've played as a beginner for about twenty years; I'm now creating VERY SIMPLE hymns of praise. This is going to expand my tiny repertoire. Thank you SO MUCH.
Regards,
Marshall
After 20 years, you are not a beginner. Have faith in yourself, your skills and your knowledge. ❤
I liked…i feel easy and comfortable after watching this video…ty
The simplicity in your instruction is absolute gold...thank you...
Well explained.thank you
This video provides an excellent description of four common chords to play songs in the key of C and how to play these four chords in different and interesting ways. Once you learn how to this, you still have to know when to use these chords for any given song (given that the chord progressions can differ between songs) and how to figure out how to play any given song in the key of C or in whatever key you choose (a step that is often glossed over and/or rarely explained in explicit terms).
The “general” rule of thumb for finding the basic chords to play with most any song is to play the basic chords that carry the melodic notes played on the down beats. Or, explained in a different way that is much easier to translate into practice and in real-time as you are playing the piano - Play the melodic note on the next down beat as note 1, 3, or 5 of the basic chord.
To figure out which note on the keyboard to play the first melodic note of the song so that you play the song in the key of C, sing the song aloud (or play it on the piano in whatever key) and identify the number of note intervals X separating the first note of the melody from the last and final note of the song. Start the song on the note that is X intervals from the note C on the keyboard.
I've got to learn a lot thankyou so much 😊
Very attractive presentation. You are a very good teacher. Thank you.
My pleasure!
Good
Thank you very much!
I lost it when you demonstrated something that was "a LITTLE more advanced." Well I hope, at the very least, to be able to reach that level someday :(
Great informative video, thank you, sir!
Are you able to play that now?
Keep working hard
Hey i saw this video this year 2023. I don't know if you still here and i wish you are so i could learn more from your teachings
I'm still here and posting every week! I ain't going anywhere
just picking up my first keyboard and this was insanely helpful!!! very hard to find good tutorials so thank u!!
I have commented on this video before but the more I end up back at it (beginner) I have realized if you listen to him it should take you weeks to go throught this 1 video. & this is JUST in Cm .. Every time he say "do that until you get it down" sometimes takes days. He inverts chords, broken chords, etc.
Absolutely the BEST VIDEO FOR A BEGINNER.
I find my self back at this video time & again.
Thanks Piano Pig 🐖
When I get some nerve I'll post a link to a video...
Pardon my grammar & mistakes
Incredibly useful! Thank you very much! I thought I’d never learn piano chords until now, Thank you :)
Just wonderful, been searching for "piano chords and finger placement pdf" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Nonason Ranincoln Genie - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now )?
It is a great one off guide for discovering how to play the piano like a pro minus the headache. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my buddy got excellent success with it.

So EASY to learn from this guy! Lessons are STEP by STEP, slowly and clearly! Real stuff here, NO bull shit ! Many tutorials done so terrible because they do NOT know how to teach! This guy has real talent like Joharris , and HDpiano. VERY FEW like this video does well! NICE songs , good practice to work with here! Thanks! N the best part HOW CHORDS , or keynotes light up to see exactly what is played!
ETsonggalaxy When they go fast. I doubt they are really sincere about true pedagogy. I do know that this person know his stuff and shares.
Cute bots :*
I found many excellent piano teachers on TH-cam. Have learnt a lot from many of them. You guys must be looking in the wrong places.
Lo my
Love the split chords....first time learning that..plus arpeggios...wow..good teacher.
The chord inversion thing is blowing my mind
I feel I found one of the most helpful genuine videos on the internet.
I use the piano for nearly 3 years. Had countless piano lessons. Played in theatrè. But i still learned a lot in this video. I recommend this video not just for amatuers. Even pro's.
Thank you. After watching this I’m finally getting a grasp of playing.
Thanks for sharing!
I am at your site . Thank you so much.. I chose the most popular. Then I noticed this has a lot of songs. As a church pianist. .third generation musician..I have to play by ear a lot. In every key.. So with forty plus years playing you develop a fairly good ear.. I am working on perfect pitch, not to say" I have perfect pitch", but to
be a better musician. Normally I would have passed this up for the above reasons.. But as I mature, I realize that we can learn something from others.. I can learn songs that I don't know.. play in styles that push me..and many other reasons I probably will do some of these..I will make sure that your link to this main channel will be in the video subscription.
I can tell you are indeed ,what a teacher (pedagogue) what a big word..should be. I will encourage them to play the videos over and over again.. I only have 20 subscribers , but I think you will get some more subscribers. Wish you the best. Paul

I'm just starting to learn the piano properly and this really helped me a lot. I am getting it and hopefully someday I can play well enough.
thank you my great teacher
Good job man , me and my son really appreciated this lesson !
Very use ful. Thank you. Going to practise as per your instrctions. I play by ear but did not know how to use cords.. Thank you again for this.. Hopefully I will find the Fmajor and G major chords too on you tube.
Absolutely the BEST ever! Your teaching style is clear, fuss-free and simple. I just started taking piano lessons, and searching helpful tips from YT. these videos came across, and they are just what I need.
That's what I was looking for. Thanx a lot!
I really appreciate this. Incredibly fascinating, informative and concise. Thank you !
My pleasure :)
Just checked out your channel man, you've got some awesome mixes on there! :D
Thanks very much
Just wonderful, I have been researching "basic chords piano" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Nonason Ranincoln Genie - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now )?
It is an awesome exclusive guide for discovering how to play the piano like a pro without the headache. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my cousin got excellent success with it.
Thanks for the help I always feel guilty not paying for the coaching
you have actual teaching talent!! have pride in that, i soaked up the info easily compared to other tutorials
I’m a guitar player, this makes me want to get a keyboard.
It's awesome. I play both
I play 4 instruments (mostly) ..... piano (beginner btw) guitar and bass, also am learning a bit of drums as well...
Get one!! I tried learning gutar but wow it hurys my fingers
Ashlin Scalco it will to begin with, but the wonderful thing about the human body is that it adapts (well in most people it does), so you get hard patches on your fingers and then it stops hurting so much.
At the beginning it hurts a lot - I empathize because when I was learning the bass I would have blisters on the end of my fingers until they hardened :)
Dude sameeee
PianoPig thank you so much for your videos! I've honestly learnt more from this 8 minute video than I have from years of "old school" piano lessons decades ago. Playing silly songs for hours on end but no one taught me the "how" or the "why". Excited to learn how to play on my own terms as an adult!
yes clear to the point no long stories talent for teaching thanks
Good
thank you so much for the knowledge.
Simply amazingly taught!! ❤
This is a REALLY helpful video for more impatient learners who want to get moving quickly. I've been teaching my son to play by ear, when heard these chords he got really excited by teaching him these so he can play songs he knows and likes I can work backwards to scales and easier pieces, this seems nonsensical I know but some learners need to see how those easier things are working to a bigger picture, it's easier to teach them backwards.
Thank you for the way in which you taught me four chords and their inversions. It has given me so much more confidence, and brightened up my practice. I look forward to watching as many of your videos as is possible.
That's great to hear! Happy I can help you improve :)
How do you decide which specific note to play as the root note? For example, for C major chord (non inversion), which C should I play with the left hand
This is what called genius tutorial.. Love it sir.. Respect from #INDIA
Pretty cool. Thanks
When he played C G Am F, I heard Lewis Capaldi, Someone You Loved
Ikr!
Oh well I heard can't help falling in love😅
also James Arthur-say you won't let go
For someone like me who has great difficulty learning music, this is as close to magic formula as one could hope for. I have to get up from the keyboard every so often to walk around, digesting how amazing this feels to actually create such a full, musical sound as opposed to pecking out haphazard melodies with a finger or two. It's like finally being able to shift into high gear and being able to take the highway. Thank you for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed the video 😀
Awesome
OMG thank you so much for this!!! This was so easy to learn and yes I can play a lot of songs using this!! Thank you so much❤️❤️❤️
So cool talk

THANK YOU SO MUCH! i have been watching a lot of channels in youtube but still do not have any clue to jazz piano. Your videos are the first ones that teaches "how to play" but not only "what to play"!
The best teacher here.....I like his experience
Wow! This lesson will keep me busy for a long time but so simply put I instantly got it! Another lightbulb moment in music theory for this beginner. Thank you 🙏😊
Don’t worry , your not alone , we all got to start somewhere, very good video , the hands coordinating with the brain lol 2hands doing different moves bit of a challenge 😁
Kindly do for us a melody video as they relate to chords.
Ty. Where were u at when I was a kid?😁 But I have a kid and we r learning. We get it. . My son loves how animated you are. Keep continuing blessing families and bringing them together. May every blessing be healthy ✌🏼🖖
I must compliment and thank you on what you just taught in this lesson, there are so many piano lessons on TH-cam but your lesson is head and shoulders above the rest, continue on this trend and you will be bountifully rewarded, may God continue to bless you with wisdom beyond your years, thanks.
Thanks for the positive feedback Trevor!

Very useful. Thank you
This is nice.i'm learning by GOD'S GRACE. AMEN.
Excellent teaching technique. Well done Good job.
🤤 Thank you for the lesson which is very good for me, I will look for more in the future.
I want to add to the many comments regarding the pace and "graspability" of these lessons. I think the instruction here is phenomenal.
Don't forget you have a pause button. It's a crime how youtube offers nothing better than than and +-5 seconds and +-10 seconds (and a weak speed control, at least for slowing down). I sure wish I could have more playback control than that, ideally with transpositions, properly slowing down, and intervals that **I** control. I will say that the numeric keystroke shortcuts 0 through 9 and the end key are extremely valuable playing some youtubes.
2:23 nailed it
Amazing chords man
Thank you. I like you style of teaching. Totally suits my way of learning
Yes
This is great. I leaned more in this video than any on line instruction. Thank you for slowing down so my mind can understand.
This might be the most informative piano video I’ve seen. Thank you. I’m going to devote a lot of time on these chords.
Edit: Subscribed.
Totally amazing teacher. Breaks it down so simply without taking anything for granted. thanks for explaining concepts that were complicated by unnecessary jargon In very simple terms.
My first ever piano lesson. Thank you so much
Really, make use of it well
Thank you so much for this. It showed me that I didn't suck and I was on the right track and should of always kept going. Thank you I hope I continue.
Thank you so much! I love your teaching style and wish to know more! Well, I’m a beginner and need to master what you’ve shown here! May God bless you for your talents! 👍
I watched 10 or more videos on 4 chords and didn't understand anything until this one. I always wanted to make my own background music for my videos but didn't know anything until now. Made my first really basic piece 10 minutes ago. Thank you!
This was really, really useful; it made me feel like I’m ready to make major strides in my playing. Thanks so much!!!
Very helpful thanks ❤️
Ty, this really helped me play the piano for my music subject! ❤️
It just seems so easy when I watch and hear you do it. A big part is muscle memory with the fingers. My ring fingers are so weak. Pinky fingers too. Thanks for your help. It is a good little tutorial.
That's amaziiiing! You are such a good teacher!
Straight up and down simple. Thank you
Wow this was easy to follow
Victoria Natalino Hey what kind of production or composing you do???
All summed up in a single video. I didn't know why arpeggios were important. But here they are turning the chords into music.
How I wish syllables and melodies get a video from u. We would start righting music and playing it right away.
after seeing this, I cant wait to go home and practice it on my Yamaha!
Yamcha:ok yeah 😃

It’s axis of awesome I’ve seen that video already and I’ve wandered what chords they used since I am a begginer
Thank you for teaching me how to make more sense of my Guitar and I can dabble on the Piano! Thank you

I have been trying to write a song for ages and this video finally gave me a huge boost and I can now play a good song.Thx so much.
Most used chords ever. Literally in every single song.
very common progressions maybe in tons of songs, It's how the chords are used is the real magic, inversions for example, relative minor's, borrowed chords from a different key, have a look at the circle of fifth's. so many ways to be creative, song writers these days are just too lazy, It doesn't have to be a 1 4 5 progression. ths is busshit. a bit of music theory wouldn't do these fellas any harm.
So you can change how you play the A cord like A C E , E A C, A E C etc???
