Normally the butt is the same flex as the fly line, not the same diameter. If you can ram a pin up the line so there is a hollow in there, you can insert various diameters, to get the one that flexes with the line. For instance, 23 thou is 50% stiffer than 20 thou. That means it can open up the loop a lot. 20 thou is probably the most common butt for the range of 6-8 weight lines. In classic Mason Hard that is 16 pound! I once built a fly rod on 6 foot spinning blank. 6 foot rods are a lot of fun and were a thing back a while. I purchased the blank for a spinning rod. But I tried it out with some snake guides first. It was a great little fly rod, cast an 8 weight like a gun. It was marked as an ultralight. There were two classes, the really light UL, I forget but 1/32 oz and 1 pound up; and this one was the next size up, 2-4 pound lines comes to mind, forget the lure weight. Wow! An 8 weight, salmon, bonefish, light tarpon, bass is just an ultralight rod! I always keep that in mind when fishing them. Thanks for the info, I am going to try your leaders out, and see what I learn.
Alvin, signed up and can’t wait. I think I actually might be able to make the live class, but will absolutely study the recording. I felt compelled to support you after all the time and effort you have put into helping share your knowledge of fly fishing. Plus, you got style my man
Fantastic as usual. I fish salt water and I normal just us the surgeon's knot for every adding length to my butt section of a store bought leader. But I'm going to start to learn that blood knot. Thanks
Alvin, First of all, you and your family have been in our prayers since I heard about the loss of your wife. We will continue to pray for you and the family. A question about the Orvis leader material you are using to build the leaders. I have been trying to find those spools with no luck. Do you know where I can find them? Thanks for all you do for us and for representing us in Central Texas!
For a sinking line I’m curious why would wouldn’t just use Fluro for a leader as it sinks also.. I’m fairly new to the fly fishing side of bass fishing, just trying to learn the in and outs .. You have a lot of good info
Do you ever use a micro barrel swivel going to your tippet section to help with line twist? Love the channel! Was happy to find a channel that’s focused on bass on the fly
I have some that I am going to try out. I have fished with a couple of people that love them, but I was fishing with someone who lost a nice redfish when the swivel broke so there's that.
Simple and effective! Thanks for sharing. Shouldn't we take in consideration the stiffness of the mono instead of the diameter and breaking strenght??!!
To think I just spent 80$ in buying leaders and that’s all I had to do, sucks to be a rookie😂 just bought my first fly reel and rod to bass fish got a lot to learn!
Hey there, .. been watching your videos for a bit... I must have spent a fortune on tapered leaders in my life… so I stopped buying them and I make my own…. And they're the way I want them, not what you get from pre-made leaders…heres the the problem…. I have way too many leaders... Either for salt or fresh…. This is what happens when you a couple thousand miles of mono of various strenghts and diameters…. 🤣🤣🤣
Whats the disadvantage by eliminating the butt section. Just run 20 lbs test for all 8 feet? Does it not cast properly or is it easier to just replace the tippet?
There has to be a balance... you need the thick butt section to carry the weight on that big fly from butt to tippet. It's just the laws of physics... Not rocket science….you’ll get it… 👍😎👌
Here's my question, I use 30 lb butt section to 20lb fluorocarbon tippet, the entire length is usually around 5-6ft, longer for floating line and shorter for sinking, think that would be alright?
Simple is usually better!
Hey brother..I wanted to say I am very sorry for your loss. Pls know you are not alone..My Thoughts and prayers are with you and yours..🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏godbless
Been needing this!! Gonna start building leaders for this season!! Thanks for the help Alvin!
Thanks for watching!

Hey Alvin great video. Like your leader recipes.

Thanks for your insights, you are the man😉👍
Thanks for watching!
OK thanks Alvin, that makes sense for the sinking line, I’ll try that tomorrow. Bass watch out!
Great stuff Alvin!
Thanks Mike!
Love the video's, you are so laid back and informed ,cant wait for warmer weather in nj

You get a smoother connection with the heavier material.
Can I get a redfish leader? Because mullet. You are awesome!
@@S.A.Gonzalez This one would work for redfish as well.
I agree with other comments. Simple and easy...both the vid and leader!
Nice
Thanks
How to properly iron liders and tips in fishing situations.
Can we loop to loop tips to liders for large bass flyfishing.
Enjoyed this, glad I found your channel. Subscribed
Thanks for being here!
I was a little late in acknowledging the loss that has come to you, May GODS blessings be on you and my prayers are with you And for you!

Thanks Alvin! I appreciate your content and it helps me out a lot!
My pleasure!
Dude!!
Loving your content!!
Would be so sweet if you made it out West to do a clinic or two!!!
Be well!!
Did I hear that you use a 6 weight, Alvin?
Yes most of the year. I use a 7 when I need to throw a sink tip line.
For a sinking line I’m curious why would wouldn’t just use Fluro for a leader as it sinks also.. I’m fairly new to the fly fishing side of bass fishing, just trying to learn the in and outs .. You have a lot of good info
Yes flouro would help. It should be more abrasion resistant as well. Still want to keep it short though.
@@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing ok thank you.. I was just wondering if there was a reason you didn’t use or mention it.. 👍

Yes that is a factor as well sometimes. Thanks for pointing that out.
This is for throwing heavy steamers
Pike streamers
Double or triple surgeons loop?
I do a double on the big stuff. Triple on the small stuff.
Great video and information
Thanks for watching!
Great video! Quick question, Where can I get one of those hats?
Is tying three different sizes of leader the same as having a tapered leader? I'm new to fly fishing and would love to learn more.
Yes, you are making a hand tied tapered leader. Check out this video th-cam.com/video/VRv9Cji7_MA/w-d-xo.html
@@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing awesome, thanks. I will look
Good job.

What are your thoughts on the Bimini Twist leader?
I used to tie them all the time. Haven't used one in years, might be important if you are going for line class records..

Sound like your buddies need some custom leaders. 😂
@@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing yeah they do… 🤣🤣🤣
What was the diameter for the 20 lb amd 30lb? Also, which leader would you use for an intermediate sinking line?
Is the Orvis mono similar to the Mason hard mono? I use to use the Mason for saltwater fishing.
It's not quite as stiff as the Mason hard mono but not as soft as the Mason soft.
Whats the disadvantage by eliminating the butt section. Just run 20 lbs test for all 8 feet? Does it not cast properly or is it easier to just replace the tippet?
The butt section helps turn over bigger flies. It will be harder to get the leader to straighten out if you just use 20 lb. Not impossible but harder.

Can you use a double uni knot instead of a blood knot?
I have heard of people doing that. If it's easier for you that's what I would do.
yay , ditch pickles! Lets see you pull on some Reds.
Heading that way soon.
