    So very glad that I found you. You have re-invigorated my love of fly fishing. Because of you, I just bought a new vise. My previous one washed away in Hurricane Ivan 19 years ago with the rest of my house. Thank You. For the record...my dog is named Tippet.

      Welcome aboard! I have an old friend who used to have a border collie named tippet.

    Very helpful. Thank you. One of your great traits is that you consciously think about other people and where they are in their ability and knowledge. “But, I do remember when I didn’t know this, and it was a game changer.” You meet people where they are. I’m not religious in any formal sense, but I believe that god smiles on you every day. Stay safe.

    For Red fish and Largemouth Bass with a WF8F, I build a 9 foot leader. 5’4” of 40# Mono then a blood knot to 26” of 30# Mono for transition section then another blood knot to 18” of 20# fluorocarbon and the results are great. Fly turns over nice and I catch plenty with this set up. Actually I start with a 21” tippet and when I tie my first fly on then I can still have a 9’ leader. Cheers Alvin.

    Alvin… your videos are all great sir. I appreciate you sharing you experiences and the tutorials are very helpful.
    I am a 4-5 weight fisherman from the Rockies and have done so for 30 plus years and I do not know “Jack” about fishing salt water and large mouth bass… so I watch to videos with enthusiasm and always take a great deal from them… this 8-9 weight world is like fishing with a telephone pole… but I am getting used to it. Thank you Pard I appreciate you very much.
    God bless

    Good explanation for leaders, personally I use pre made for throwing dries they just seem to work better at turning over the fly with Better control of landing the fly . And having less knots can be a big advantage when fishing things like spring creeks or weedy late summer rivers . Nymph, euro and streamer leaders I tie myself . You can purchase spools of fluorocarbon at most fishing stores way cheaper ( 100 yards vs 9’ ) then at the fly shop to build you own leaders . Just about all of these are either level line or slightly tapered no delicacy involved .

    Great info Alvin! You answered my leader question a Q&A episode ago and much appreciated. This video filled in all the blanks for me. I feel like a lot of this stuff I overthink especially when it comes to bass fishing and I am not always trying to fool some spooky fish. I appreciate how you keep everything from flies to leaders simple and minimal, and the proven track record you have to demonstrate how it works by still catching fish.

    I’m currently at a stage where I’m tying my leaders. (Although still very new to it) It makes the most sense for me in my situation, financially. You’re video was awesome, and unbiased. And I really appreciate that! Great video again!

    Sir, if you ever find yourself in deep east texas, wanting to kayak fly fish Caddo Lake, holler at me. We will make something happen. I am still learning this area, but like you have mentioned in many videos, sometimes going with a friend can help make it more fun.
    I hope you have a blessed week.

    It would be cool to have a school on fishing. Ocean fishing and fresh water fishing. You would learn about rides, reels , leaders , Flys, lines, and weights. There are other things I did not mention. You would learn about.
    Then the type of boats used for fishing.

    I've been running 3' of 30lb fluoro to 2 feet of 17lb to 2 feet of 12lb for basically everything I throw my 8 weight at. I've had a lot of luck with Sunline Sniper line and haven't used much "tippet" material. Are there any benefits to actual tippet?

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
      @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your 2 feet of 12 pound would qualify as tippet.

    • @4492573
      @4492573 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      30# is a bit lean for a 8wt , give 40# to 20# to 12# a go. 5’4” then 26” then 18”. Try for me.

    Good information. Your thoughts on tippet rings and micro-swivels for tippet connection to the leader?

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
      @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think they work pretty well especially for sinking flies, although I did have a client loose a nice fish when his tippet ring broke.

    What’s some good leader formulas for trout and smallmouth bass? Looking to start building some?

  • @slider744
    @slider744 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How often do you typically change out leaders (assuming you’re not seeing fraying or stress indicators)? I’ve heard people say they swap them out every time they go fishing…which seems excessive unless you’re doing something like a destination fishing trip.

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
      @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll use the same leader forever. I just keep adding tippet. I'll put on a fresh leader for my clients 😂

  • @hyunki0510

    can you use regular fishing line to tie leaders? i see everyone uses maxima line but what is the difference between regular spin rod mono vs maxima type mono??

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
      @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you can use regular mono. I have a few spools of the sizes I use a lot. It is mostly about the diameter with leaders for fly fishing. Most mono is listed with the pound test. Look and see what the diameter is an go from there.

  • @paddyfromireland9277
    @paddyfromireland9277 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Alvin. Would it be better to say the butt section should be close to the stiffness of your fly line tip, rather than the diameter?
