    I have a Mountainsmith Tour pack just like this one, but an earlier generation. Yours has several new features I like. I have had mine for 6 years now and have abused it weekly. It has never let me down. I would have thought that I would have busted the zippers by now as I over stuff mine often and at times use it for an ammo bag (serious weight in it). Every stitch on the bag has held despite the abuse I've given it. I may get this newer generation and relegate this older one to an emergency bag for the car or something. Great review. Thanks for the detail.

    Thanks for an extremely informative video. I've been looking at Mountainsmith's larger version, the Day pack. What kept me from purchasing it was that I wanted to know whether I could use a hydration bladder in the tablet sleeve and run the hose through the earphone hole. Well, now I know I can do that on the Tour, so I'm sure I can do this on the Day. Thanks again.

    9:55 They tried that in the past, back in 2001 with their Cairn lumbar pack, which has exactly the kind of organizer compartment you're wishing for. A good sized one that had a U-shaped zipper to open wide. Apparently didn't sell very well as they discontinued it within a year or two. I don't think they'll try that again.

    I have the Day TLS recycled version, I find it much more comfortable hiking in the California heat as a backpack makes my back sweaty. or I can use it like a messenger bag. I tuck away the straps with rubber bands since mine is older. Highly versatile bag!

    I literally just yesterday watched your video on the Mountainsmith Day pack from like 3 years ago. Of course that one is an older design and different material, but the sizing seems to be about the same as the new model. I have been wanting a good lumbar pack after seeing Cody Lundin carry an older (at least 20 yr old) Mountainsmith bag on a recent course of his that I attended. Still debating on the Day or Tour but I will get one or both at some point. Thanks for both videos, very informative!

    Nice complete review of this pack. I'm an avid day hiker and have owned 5 of the Tour packs for the last 20 years. I'm glad they finally changed the water bottle pockets! I agree with your on the left side belt which they left totally blank. What were they thinking? Even a couple molle loops would have been nice.

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kurt the cat glad to hear that you like this style too, yeah I was a little odd to leave that space blank.

    Excellent review! Well shot and you explain the product very well without being overly wordy. I agree, strange Mountainsmith would only add one hip belt pocket. Fortunately, there are several companies that make those pockets which can be adapted to almost any hip belt. I was glad to see they redesigned the water bottle pouches that have much better retention. After cinching down the the elastic cord tight, you can then stretch the remaining loop over the top of the bottle making it even more secure. I'd be willing to bet it would hold up fine while mountain biking or trail running without the fear of jettisoning your bottles. I'm glad I stumbled on your channel. New subscriber, here.
    Cheers.

    Good review. I picked up the 9 liter model a few months ago and am very happy with it. I did get the strappettes and they really make the bag for hiking. Being winter in the northeast, hikes are usually shorter, so a fanny pack is ideal. The problem I had with my old fanny pack is being cold, I wear a light down jacket. The slickness of the jacket causes the fanny pack to keep sliding down. The suspender like strappettes solve the problem perfectly. I agree about your 2 flaws, Being a small daypack the organization issue doesn't really matter to me. The lack of a left hand belt pocket is a major flaw. Still I am more than satisfied. Very well built. I really like the wide belt straps. I did get the brown color. It was the cheapest. The color looks a lot better in person than on amazon.

    I used to have the Day pack until it tore apart..
    From there ive been finding the right pack..
    Tried the timbuk2 small messenger bag to crumpler outpost to maxpedition proteus and lunada.. Like the lunada with all the molle attachement but way to heavy and the compartment was just to small.. The strap was way to big for me..
    I have again find my way to mountainsmith.. But got the Tour as i will intend to put alot of stuff with the Day.. Haha!

    This might be the Mobius replacement I was looking for. Since I am dissatisfied with Vanquest customer service (after being a fanboy), I needed something to use as a Photography bag. Does it compare well? I know you said it has a lack of organization but with some pocket organizers, It seems ok and it would go well with a ribz pack for a day or even a weekend

  • @rollsalong7854
    @rollsalong7854 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I assume there's nothing on the second side flap so, if the the waist attachment is folded in, that side goes on top so you don't feel an add-on pressing into you back.

  • @qzetu

    Looks like a good waist pack at a decent price point. I like the fact that it offers that shoulder system.

  • @marlenyr7121

    When he starts talking about the secondary compartment at the 9 minute mark and talks about the "dump" compartment, I think what would be a great idea is to buy, separately, one of those bag organizers. I'd like this pack to carry my art supplies for nature journaling so I think an organizer would go perfectly in the secondary compartment to hold pens and pencils, markers, etc.

    • @amightysailingman
      @amightysailingman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Look for a used Mountainsmith Cairn. More capacity than the Tour and it has an actual organizer pocket rather than a front pouch. But make sure it's the original Cairn and not the redesigned Cairn II. Unfortunately, introduced in 2001 and discontinued in 2002.

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is and it rocks!! Review coming soon. One of my favorite knives I have reviewed recently! Great steel, great grind angle, great ergos, great sheath, I could go one. $136 is a great deal for what you are getting.

    • @dvolsky914
      @dvolsky914 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +gideonstactical Thanks for the quick reply. I'm not familiar with the steel, so I had concerns about that. I also wasn't sure I'd like the handle material. I'd prefer micarta. But this knife still looks pretty sweet. I think it's at $159 currently. I saw them on sale around Christmas, so hopefully they will have another one.
      I'm also interested in some that White River had at the most recent shot show, but they aren't currently available.

    not sure if you do viewer knife review requests but was wondering if you could check out the spyderco aqua salt and if possible do a knife review. it is made out of h1 steel and will never rust( supposedly) but might end up to be a great camp/survival/tactical knife for wet weather or high humidity areas. but would love to see you do a review on it and others might find it appealing too sense it is supposedly low maintenance and rustproof

    It looks like the waist belt could be removed? Wiould be nice if it could be removed. Can anyone confirm that?
    I'm actually looking at the Day Lumbar Pack and the Strapettes, which makes me also think that I should get one of their duffel bags that can use the Strapettes. Could possibly drop either of the shoulder straps to reduce some weight.
    Maybe I'm just being greedy and actually just the Day Lumbar Pack with its shoulder strap would be more than enough for stabilisation with heavier loads.
    Edit: I have hesitated to buy the Day Lumbar Pack (I really, really like it a lot for its versatility) because I cannot seem to make it substitute my day backpack in my main backpack + day backpack + tiny waist pack travel combo. In all my circumstances, the tiny waist pack (with all my passport and valuables) is always either on my waist or chest, so it's not something I can drop.

    Also, I dare say, “amazon” is probably antithetical to everything you value....I see this quite often with those of the same ‘fold’ .... promoting purchases on amazon,, empowering the machine to destroy everything they believe in....unfortunately TH-cam is the same, so I am not ‘throwing stones’....but at the very least people should purchase local or specific vendors instead of amazon....
    Just a thought....great review! I’d appreciate some basic camo colors in these fantastic packs....

    Why on earth did I buy one of these? I’m going to look like an idiot. I’ll share a bag with someone who stocks theirs with a Bible, a gun, and a multitool. It’s game over for me. I had every chance to dress like a normal adult, but now I’ll tote around this bizarre fanny pack

    I've heard you misuse "pick your poison" before. Just thought you should know "pick your poison" is a reference to alcohol. Since alcohol was considered poison way back in the day. What type of alcohol or "poison" do you prefer? Even today, the phrase is normally used to reference two things that will harm you, like cigarettes or energy drinks, not between two back packs. But I guess rules doesn't matter these days since you can use whatever restroom you want according to how you feel inside.

      Or you could ponder the hypocrisy behind criticizing bathroom rules while policing outdated grammar.
