My favorite Hanson Symphony--loved it from the first time I heard it in October of 1968. Unlike his #2 (Romantic) which I never considered particularly romantic, I think THIS one really is, richly, unabashedly romantic. I hope more listen to this one. I can state that one reason for its infrequent performance is that it is available by rental only. When the orchestra I played in performed it in 2003, it was only the second time it had been played in Hanson's home state of Nebraska, the first having been in 1971.

you cannot discuss taste. no. 2 is a masterpiece and romantic (Sibelian) to many, but 3 is romantic and beautiful as well, in a different way.

I love how he takes this very lyrical theme and twist and turns it, and gradually building it to a climatic conclusion. And his use of a pedal on the bottom....Brilliant!

The second movement is stunningly beautiful and has a shimmering quality to it. Howard Hansen should be performed more and played more on the radio. Thanks for posting!

+sep bre Shimmering = glittering, shining as at 10:50 and later 18:40 (the poster seems to have sensed that too with the picture/painting above. Lovely!

Lush, sweeping, glorious music. The quintessential American composer no one's ever heard of.

Wonderful piece. I don't believe I ever heard it before, and I doubt I would have, had it not been part of a playlist. I rarely listen to much from the 20th century, much preferring more melodic/harmonic music from previous times. I am relistening to this piece as I write this. Kuhlau, once again, I must thank you for what you do in bringing frequently ignored, but beautiful, music to us. Those who would hinder you and what you do are very short-sighted, for if I never find this music how can I possibly purchase it? Your work has done much to enlarge my library, and I am grateful.

Many thanks for this. I hope that others will explore the music of Howard Hanson. His music is seldom performed nowadays except for the Second Symphony, the so-called "Romantic."

"Romantic" is the title he gave it.

Forgot to mention that Hanson apparently liked his own music enough to borrow from it. One movement of this, I think the 4th, he lifted part to plant in a pleasant piece for concert band, called "Chorale and Alleluia" I think. We never played it in band except to read it once but I remember the broad smiles and laughter that broke out when those familiar with Sym #3 heard part of it show up unexpectedly in a band piece

Note the reliance on atmosphere, chord structure & progression, and key to develop his themes. There aren't a lot of "tunes" you can hum during the workday. The lyric content really serves to move through the musical landscape rather than be the focus of the symphony. BTW this digital painting fits the music perfectly.

I think this music (the final pesante movement) was used in a Tales of Tomorrow episode ("The Evil Within," starring Rod Steiger and a young actor named James Dean).

Had some time this Thanksgiving and I thought about listening to some American composers for change. Brahms and Sibelius are among my favs, but listening to Hansen's Sym 2 & 3 was quite a surprise! The music is very powerful without being overly "sweet", lyric. Very pleased that we - as a country - have produced such great composers. The closest I ever came to American music was Copeland & Ives, completely over-played these days. Now we need audiences to hear more Hansen, Shuman, & Hohvanes. BTW, who did the painting ... very apt choice?

While I agree generally with your comments, I will strongly disagree with your contention that Ives is overplayed. his works are singular monuments to the soul of America and deserve to be in the standard repertoire.

+Andrew Petersen Standard repertoire yes. Although sometimes I do enjoy listening to lesser known works of famous composers. For example, Rachmaninoff's prelude in c sharp minor is a fantastic piece but I love his six choruses for female voices. It is lesser known but still beautiful music. Hanson's music applies the same idea.

It's such a shame that American orchestras have such an inferiority complex when it comes to many American composers. Hey American orchestras! There's more to American classical music than just Gershwin, Copland and Ives! There's Mennin, Paine, Collins, Diamond, Hadley, MacDowell, Corigliano, Adams, Still, Randall Thompson, Chadwick, Coleridge-Taylor, Reich and of course Hanson.....
