This beautiful Nordic introduced me to Hanson's music almost 6 decades ago. Wrote him a letter of compliment and he kindly wrote back. I consider his #1, #2, and #4 his best symphonies. A great, if not the greatest, American Neo-Romantlc Master. Miss him !

Hanson has a purity and accessability in it's neo-romantic style that I suspect is looked down upon by many in the academy. If thought and emotion can be accessed through imagery and sound, then Hanson is among best at doing so for we deplorables out there.

One of Hanson's favorite orchestral signatures is a subdued French horn passage of affirmation. Hear it once, and you will recognize it anywhere else.
Hanson is both memorable and often strikingly original, in the sense even his earlier orchestrations sound "modern" and engagingly complex.

Rarely do I ever listen to much from after 1900, but Hanson is definitely an exception. He wrote music that carried a mood, was melodic but not saccharine, moved but with a purpose, and never lost sight of the need to be musical and not just noise.
I read a lot of comments comparing Hanson to Sibelius, but except for a few fleeting moments, I don't see it. Too often, Sibelius forgot the purpose of music is to be musical. Some of his works were lyrical, but the rest were him trying to tell everyone how good he was by being harsh and discordant. Hanson did not fall into that trap. Hanson would have been right at home in the midst of the Romantic era.
Kuhlau, thank you once again for enriching my life with this lovely piece.

I like a few of Hanson's symphonies. Pretty orchestration - I think Debussy was the inspiration yet Hanson's own American sound. Romantic as they come. Recommend Estonian Eduard Tubin's 4th and 2nd symphony if you like this sound.

The recording conducted by Kenneth Schermerhorn with the Nashville SO has the dynamic edge over Schwarz's version, especially in the Finale which is spine tingling in its rhythmic drive and melodramatic intensity. This is a brilliant symphony.

What a nice surprise this is. I'm, of course, familiar with the much more famous #2 "Romantic", but this really has its moments and is put together beautifully. Nice recording. "Nordic" here might refer to Hanson's Swedish heritage and also his Nebraska roots, I'm not sure about that. It does have a Sibelius quality about it.

There are tragic undertones in the symphony that emerge full-blown in the last movement's coda. Maybe a nordic sense of fate, or more likely the shattering effect of World War 1.

Sounds like what it is an American composer trying to sound like Sibelius #1 The Eastman School of music wanted Sibelius to run it be he wouldnt leave Finland so they hired Hanson who wrote a Nordic symphony {they called Alan Hovahness the American Sibelius so he ripped up 2000 compositions and wrote 2000 more ] Zubin Meta saisd he has no respect for Sibelius I dont know what he meant by that except I guess he is more into atonal composers like Varese and William Kraft but he also recorded the Planets by Holst

Lots of people criticized Hanson for not being modern enough. His music has outlived all his critics, and will outlive Zubin Meta. Atonal music makes people weep for all the wrong reasons.

Good thing that the tympani was invented; Hanson would have had to seek a career in carpentry, to do all of that pointless pounding.
