    Sibelius himself said that von Karajan was his favorite conductor of his music because von Karajan was the only one out there who truly understood him.

    So many conductors rush the final movement. No-one brings Sibelius to life better than the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Karajan, and really brings out the power of that final movement like no-one else. Masterful.

      Karajan had a magical touch with Sibelius and Wagner. Everything he conducted by these composers usually required a broad perspective and a linear approach with long phrases.

    Los músicos de la Filarmónica de Berlín se merecen el cielo por esta interpretación. No he escuchado a ninguna orquesta lograr el sonido tan sublime que logra esta orquesta con las sinfonías de Sibelius.Se trata,sencillamente,de un sonido a la vez que celestial,telúrico.

    La 2 sinfonía de Sibelius pertenece al grupo de obras que grabó (dos veces) y que no lllegó a hacer en concierto o hizo sólo una vez. La única vez que la hizo fue en concierto que se dio los días 24 y 25 de febrero de 1962 en Viena con la Sinfónica de Viena. En el programa estaban el Concierto para tres pianos K242 de Mozart (Badura-Skoda, Alexander Jenner y Karajan) y el"Impromptu para orquesta" de Fortner. Otro ejemplo vendría a ser la 1 sinfonía de Sibelius que sólo hizo el 8 y 9 de febrero de 1942 en Berlín con la Staatskapelle de Berlín ( en concierto se dieron "los Preludios" de Liszt y el 1 concierto para violín d Bruch, con Gioconda de Vito al violín). Para grabarlo una vez en febrero de 1981, en la que atesora la mejor interpretación del disco; con un final de una belleza y una intensidad emocional sin paragón; a su lado Bernstein, Maazel o Davies palidecen.

    • @chemapg6966
      @chemapg6966 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Opulencia es el sello de Karajan. Que abruma. Pero en intensidad prefiero Bernstein. Y qué decir de la mejor versión: Szell en Japon live 1970

    • @jesussendra6540
      @jesussendra6540 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chemapg6966 De acuerdo con usted si nos referimos a la 2 de Sibelius; Bernstein con F. de Viena posiblemente es la más heterodoxa, enfática y genial de las interpretaciones de esta obra. También la última de Colin Davies con la S. de Londres estaría ahí. Szell o Monteux, son opciones que han estado siempre en las preferencias de los melómanos. Pero hay que señalar,y no es baladí, que los registros de Bernstein y Davies provienen de interpretaciones en vivo y que, en este caso, lo de Karajan son grabaciones de estudio. En cuanto a la opulencia , juega un papel determinante el sonido propio de la Filarmónica de Berlín. En el caso de la primera, sí admito lo que denomina sonido opulento pero en cuanto a íntensidad- torrencial- del mismo final, la forma natural de hacer brotar el tema lírico y elégiaco cuando es expuesto por tercera y última vez pasando de maderas y metales a los violines es de dificil superación.

    • @paulybarr
      @paulybarr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I hear it too. It is indeed the first bassoon, who has a C sharp ( an open fifth with the second bassoon playing the F sharp below), but it sounds as if he misreads the C sharp as a C natural for a split second, before correcting it. It rather resembles the bagpipes as a result. And yes- incredible that either the producer and Karajan didn't notice; the player didn't own up to it; or they let it go- Karajan was, after all, such a perfectionist.

    • @caginn
      @caginn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@paulybarr Actually there are testimonies of players who worked under Karajan that he was not caring about certain mistakes what happened during recording sessions although he was informed about it by the player himself who made the mistake and he'd refuse a retake. A famous example is the very clear trumpet fail in the final movement of his sole recording of Sinfonia Domestica by R. Strauss. Here same thing might have had happened. Probably Karajan and recording producer realized the error but they didn't 'mind it'.

    I do prefer a faster tempo in the finale... the orchestra is giving it all they have but the slower tempo leaves a lot of holes in the orchestration that I don't think Sibelius intended. The beginning of the 4th mov. to me is a "victory"... here it feels shallow

      I agree. The great ending loses momentum and that feeling of exhilaration. Although I've been an ardent admirer of Karajan for over 60 years, I feel he hasn't quite nailed the atmosphere of this piece. When it comes to recordings, there are several others I prefer. Not least, Sir John Barbirolli's account with the Halle Orchestra. While 'the Halle' might lack the sumptuous beauty of the Berliners, they know how to set this piece alight.

    • @benedictspinoza1025
      @benedictspinoza1025 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I cherish many of Karajan’s Sibelius recordings, especially that of the 5th Symphony from the 1970s, but for honesty’s sake I’ve to say that his account of the 2nd does not rank among the best. It is rigid and timid in its obstinate grandeur. Karajan practically messes up the finale by breaking apart the progression of it. From Karajan’s contemporaries, I would listen Leonard Bernstein and Wiener Philharmoniker in contrast to understand how lively and energetic this symphony can be without loosing any elegance and light that it has. Still Karajan’s recording is interesting to listen: how different interpretations there. can be of the masterpieces that we already know so well.

      But not Celebedache slow! Give Karajan some credit for not setting the Guinness Book of World Records record for slow Sibelius 2d records!

      Could you tell us more about what you dislike in Karajan's rendition of this symphony ?

    • @jimcrawford5039
      @jimcrawford5039 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t like Karajan in anything, except his early recordings with the Philharmonia, they were very good on the whole. His later practices were just an assembly line of hundreds of recordings.

      He did produce a large volume of recordings. That fact can co-exist with the reality that this is an amazing interpretation of one of the best symphonies ever composed.

    Sorry Her Karajan you conducted Sibelius like you are conducting Anton Bruckner, I don't see the tenderness of the land or the poetry of the deep forest.

      Ivan Hernandez Sibelius did not actually intend to create landscape or wood images with his sounds. The interpretation of associating his second symphony to Finnish landscapes is quite outdated. Sibelius, in my opinion, is creating musical experiences and not images...

      I believe Sibelius composed a lot of this symphony when he was abroad, in Italy I think it was. The forest/landscape bit you mentioned would be apt for Bruckner's sound-wald.

      Check it out people, Sibelius himself said HvK was the only conductor who really understood him.

    The tympani here is over-recorded, at times nearly drowning out the other instruments. A pity, as it's a decent interpretation of the symphony otherwise.

    • @annakimborahpa

      Yes, it's as if it was a concerto for tympani.

    I’m going against the grain, but Karajan played this slightly too fast. It ruins the mood of the piece.
