great review but most other reviews that I read say the quality of images are about average. do you think the panasonic TZ40 is a better choice? all reviews say that its images quality is better, though the 30x zoom in the hz50v is so a so attractive point to me. What do you think?
yes, i have two of these SONY HX-50V cameras and they are lovely....so thrilled with my ones. ..the zoom is remarkable... an unbelievably great zoom they have on them. PERFECT.
I would like to update from my Sony hx100v and I'm wondering which one will be the best between the hx200v and this one (hx50v) ?? By the way thanks for this great review !!
thanks for your answer i have tried to set it to 5mp and also with a faster memory card but it does not change anything. it still takes about 12 seconds to record the images after i have take them. if i cancel the recording after i have take the pictures will the camera save only 3-4 out of 10 photos I take. so it does not work either. so are there a place where I can turn recording from with out the images will be deleted? jonas
i have a question. hi i have buy the new sony hx50v from few days ago. my old is a panasonic tz30. i have not try a sony camera before and i think its take very good pictures and video compared to other small cameras. but i have one problem i think its very slow motor to take pictures if i take 10 pictures in burst mode it will take about 12 seconds before i can use the camrea again are that normally. continued
@ Lukas: If you're looking for a camera that can truly handle low-light well, then you're gonna want to look at cameras with larger sensors, and they cost more money.
I'm searching for a new camera for only 170-230$. I don't need 30x zoom and 20 mega pixel. I just want it to perform good in lowlight and great in daylight. Any suggestions?
Great review :) I was wondering if you could answer something...Is there any manual control over the video mode ( before recording and while recording) ? Thanks :)
NICE REVIEW ! BY THE WAY ! HOW LONG WILL IT RECORD VIDEO 1080 OR 720 WITH ONE RECHARGE, I MEAN IF 100 PHOTOS ARE TAKEN BESIDES SUPPOSE OR SO AT THE FIRST RECHARGE (BATTERY)
*+Helena H* Depends what you're looking for. :) The *HX50* is a great compact camera featuring a desirable zoom range. There is manual control available and is now available for very reasonable price. You will notice a considerable increase in photo quality with the *A5000* as it has a much larger sensor, which means the low-light quality is also substantially better. Other features also include manual photo control, photo apps and a 180deg tilt screen (great for selfies!). Downside is if you want more zoom, you will need to buy a different e-mount lens; however there are a tonne available which vary in costs (you can get second hand e-mount lenses for a very decent price). The *HX50* is still a camera I would recommend, however since doing this video, I have upgraded to the *A6000* (the upgrade version of *A5000*, though without the 180deg tilt-screen) and I haven't looked back. If you want quality, go for the *A5000*. :)
And its photos resolution will be in the same size of the video? If we record 1080p video, the photo will be 2 MP photo? If we record 720p video, the photo will be 1 MP photo?
the thing is that on the lumia 1020 you can manually set shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and focus. You also have full control over the flash and focus light along with exposure compensation settings
Between RX100 and HX50 which is better buy. I am not looking for professional photography but more for home and site seeing. RX100 lacks zoom so should I wait for RX200 or HX50 is overall better deal??
I haven't been to a concert with this unfortunately. The zoom will do the job I'm sure, it's just going to be down to the lighting conditions to how good the image quality would be. :P
I wanted to change this one for my current HX9V but sadly they didn't improve sensor much (same size) and didn't add raw support. So i'll be upgrading to NEX lineup shortly.
Get the 'V' version with GPS. The newly released HX90V is all I want in a compact camera, but the HX90V is now only £189 at Currys/PC World. Wait a few more weeks, and the price will plummet even more. You should be able to buy a used HX50V for under £100
I am interested in buying this camera. But I would have two more question for you, hopefully you can help me: what do you think about taking pictures in concerts with this camera? will stage lights be good enough light source for the camera without blurring the pictures? And second, is the camera screen really that bright that on sunny days you can't really see what are you shooting?
Normally stage lights are fairly bright so it shouldn't be an issue, however when I owned the camera I was never in a position to test in such conditions. As for the screen, it does have a panel brightness setting, so shouldn't be a problem. Alternatively you can get an anti-reflective screen protector, You can get them cheap on Amazon. :)
If you're wanting a more up to date compact camera and not fussed about zoom, look for the Sony RX100 series of compact cameras (they have various models).
Hi there, thank you for the compliment. You can't record whilst using the flash, which is why you wouldn't be able to find the option. Kind regards, Mike.
Random videos by Joe There are some that can go up higher (though probably not really suitable for a camera like this). The one mentioned above should only be around £100.
could u please help me to choose between -- 1) samsung galaxy camera 16 mp , 21X zoom 2) canon eos-1100D 3)nikon D-3100 4)panasonic lumix DMC-FZ60 5)sony cybershot DSC-HX50 If u had a choice to choose between a dslr or a digital camera wat would u choose for the same price ?? please do reply :)
hello! i have the same camera and im having a problem with finding the drive system. how can i turn the self-timer off? if you make a video about it,it would help a lot!!~ thank you :))
On the control wheel, click it to the left and then go up, make sure you select single shot. I'm pretty sure that's how you do it if I remembered correctly.
great video, i came here to look at this camera as im wanting to buy, but i really want a camera with a viewfinder with this quality and price! any suggestions please :)
Hmm, it's quite hard to say as I don't get the opportunity to test every camera that comes out. Judging by the reviews though, maybe something like the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60? It's a bit more pricey, but has positive reviews from others and a viewfinder. :)
No RAW ! - how does IQ compare to Sony RX100 - I assume with ISO below 400 OK - but is there not a lot of noise above 400 or smudgy over processed IQ - it looks nice - and overall impressive
I have HX30V 18.2 mega pix and 20 optical zoom and I'm very happy with that camera. There is one problem with hx50. The HDMI input is where the tripod mount is. I dont know why sony change that because hx30 is opposite
Hi, I'm looking to buy a good camera, not too professional, but not cheap either. I am torn between a Panasonic Lumix GF6 which I have found at a cheap price, and this Sony Cybershot x50. Can anyone help me decide/ which one might be better? Thanks!
Well the Lumix GF6 is an interchangeable lens camera and the HX50 is a super zoom compact camera. The GF6 is probably going to be the better camera, but to get the most out of it you'll probably find yourself buying more lenses. The HX50 is great for those who don't want to change lenses and has decent zoom from the get go. :)
The GF6 should be a lot more expensive than the HX50. If you can get the GF6 for the price of a HX50, i would take the GF6. Only downside is of course the size.
Nice review - thanks - much need for a super zoom sometimes so tripod a must but for 30x in this small of a body - hard to fault as IS seems quite nice - will be ordering one today :)
*+JohnnyZenith* Yes, it is. Although I now use either the Sony A6000 or FDR-AX100; I had made a fair amount of videos with this camera and was pleased with the results. It seems like Sony is really trying to have the best quality in their products recently. Would you agree? Also how do you get the money for all these products you review? Do you have a "real" job? You don't have to answer the last questions.
The camera is not that good ,it has q common defect..when images are clicked in low light cdition using flash..u will see lens shadow on lower left corner of every image clicked using flash in low light
Camera suffers from CMOS problems with colored vertical lines in many photos. DO NOT BUY A SONY camera- They sold me a Protection Plus Warranty for this camera then when problem occurred and was sent to repair station they wanted to bill me $161. They refused to honor the Warranty because I could no longer supply original sakes receipt even though they had sold a Extended Warranty for if showing the Serial Number. They offered to refund the Warranty cost of $25 rather than perform their contractual obligation to fix it. Poor design and worse Customer Service . Will NEVER purchase another Sony product!

I haven't seen any review about it. Have you?
So to capture photo while recording video, just press the shutter button?
@ Lukas: If you're looking for a camera that can truly handle low-light well, then you're gonna want to look at cameras with larger sensors, and they cost more money.
The larger volume of mega-pixels will maintain the quality when cropping photos and doing larger prints. :)
Between this and the lumia 1020 what would you recommend? I personally love the way the lumia 1020 handles in low light conditions

is there a port to plug in a mic or does it have to go straight into the hotshoe with no cables at all?
*TheOneTrueGamer* It doesn't have a microphone port, you need an appropriate multi-interface shoe accessory mic IF you want an external mic. :o

would a rode video mic go be good with this camera or would it be top heavy because of the camera's size? thanks
I can only presume as I don't own that mic, it would probably be excessive for a camera at such size. :/
+MyKeyReviews they are very light though :)
*+SWS* I guess there's only one way to find out. :)
Thank zou for a compact nice video . I am in small trains , and I would like zour advice for a next in line , that is just as good in all aspects .

You can't record whilst using the flash, which is why you wouldn't be able to find the option.

great review! to bad you are not showing us the video quality in full HD. I bet it does that without flaws aswel.
Thanks. :)
I tend to only render videos in 1080p when they're short ones, otherwise my processor overheats and shuts down mid-render. :P
Is there an external mic for it? if so, can you put a link to it?
Search for the Sony ECM-XYST1M. It attaches via the MI shoe.

It has a multi-interface shoe mount, but I don't know which microphone would be compatible as this model is around 7 years old now. 😯
