Hey Scott sorry to hear about the robbery. But I'm glad nothing happened to you or your family. Glad you got back to getting newer Bari Sax. Liked the sound of the P.Mauriat best. Happy to know about sax school will be checking it out. Have a great time with the new Bari.
Scott, I wish I could play Bari like you. I'm 64 and started many years ago in junior high and loved it. Twenty years ago, I purchased a King Super 20 Bari probably built in the 40's or 50's. I'd already had a King super 20 alto and tenor and I wanted to complete the set. The Bari is a great horn but it doesn't have a low A. It has great punch and a large bell. I enjoyed the lines you were playing and wish I could achieve that.
I had a Yamaha yrs 62 stolen out of my house. 1987 it happened and I still grieve that loss. I have a room full of great horns now. I went with the ybs-62 silver bari. Heavy horn.
A couple of years ago someone broke into my car and stole my 2 custom knee braces I need to play racquetball...leaving the duffle bag and racquets. After trying to hunt them down for weeks i relented and purchased 2 replacements to discover the manufacturer and design of the replacements kicked ass on the old pair....slimmer, lighter, better support and easier to use... so the thief ultimately did me a favor ...
Sorry to hear you had your bari stolen. I had a break in too long long time ago. My tenor was on the stand and they didn’t take it!! It is as a student model. Three months later and it as a Mark VI!!! Glad you found a replacement you love!! Everyone has their on preferences but love the one you chose as well. That horn is wails and the bari and Syos setup work great. Perfect match. Good luck with it and look forward to the sax school Cut like a knife, Scoot. Be well....
That Bari sounds great! I know that feeling after being robbed. The guys who installed my carpet entered my storage room and stole all of my power tools! I'm still realizing other things missing. Good luck Scott
I am sorry about the break-in. Some people never learn that crime doesn’t pay and that they should respect other people’s property. The P. Mauriat 500 baritone sax (as well as the alto and tenor versions)has some character in it both visually and sonically. I call this series the Tuxedo saxes because these horns look like they can be played in a symphony orchestra with either the silver or gold keys. Nice sound, though. The PMB -300DK is punchy, powerful and full of pop. Very distinctive sound and look.
While It's a shame they took your old bari, I imagine trying out those three beautiful horns wasn't too bad of an experience, was it? Congrats on your new Sax!
Brutal about the break-in man! Funny you ended up at Fox Music-I bought my first-ever instrument (a Fender P-bass) there in like ‘93. Glad they’re still around!
Thst was my favorite by far!!! I noticed you were lifting your top teeth off the mouthpiece when you breathe. I don’t do that cause I’ve noticed I may not get the embochure the same every time I come down or it’s slower. Have you tried the teeth on approach or do you think the other way is better? Not harshing, just picking your brain about the technique
I would John Wick the moron dumb enough to steal my Purple Label YBS-62. My wife bought that for me as a wedding gift! I hope you get yours back in an acceptable condition!
Sorry to find out what happened, but I guess you are lucky that is all they stole and nothing else. I am glad you were able to get a replacement for it. While I don't play Bari sax, I quite like the sound of the 300 DK when I heard someone playing one a few years ago as it had a far rich tone as you mentioned. Nice fat edgy sound your getting on it! I had the option of getting an unlacquered alto sax recently as I am looking to upgrade my Yamaha YAS-280 to a Yanagisawa AWO2 and the only one in stock at my local dealer was unlacquered but decided to hold off until the lacquered is in stock which should be next month sometime as I don't want one that will get tarnished and I noticed the unlacquered had more high frequencies and slightly less centred than the lacquered version.
I just saw a short from you about proper left thumb position on the octave key. But it just occurred to me - what about left thumb position on a bari with a low A key. I finally got a bari last fall, so there is lots for me to figure out. I was giving myself drills today by blowing in the key of A and doing runs and A major and minor arpeggios trying to get more natural with low A.
On the bari, you still want to hover over the octave key, and then when you go to play a low A you have to move your thumb. If you know you've got a low A coming up, you can slide your thumb down before you get there to make it easier. I love playing low A's on the bari!!!
One of my biggest fears is getting my gear stolen. My alto and tenor are Yamaha 82Zs, but I scored a sick deal on a P. Mauriat le bravo bari, and I'm in love with it. I've heard a lot of people like it better than the more expensive P. Mauriats. Highly recommend.
I got a cheap Chinese bari, black with gold keys beautiful dragon engraving, abalone key buttons, no name or number. Plays great, awesome for only $1,500.
With that sax I would definitely invest in a heck of a good security system. Try a nice "Beware of Dog" sign on the door as well. A recording of a dog growling once in a while etc.
Go for the sound.... Amazing compared to what... Marching band V jazz band.... OR..... Leo Pellegrino verses (not Ronnie the other guy) Centred... Absolute control and gorgeous...
This is sad and frustrating that they stole your horn. 😳😕 I am sorry to this! I have a question about the Bari I purchased a couple of months ago or so. This is my first Bari and I have traveled pretty extensively for many years playing the rest of the sax family but I am struggling with this new one. Do you have any tips. Anything below a G is sketchy at best if I am able to get it to play. The Low A sounds more consistent and better than Bb to F#. I struggle with playing this horn. I record a lot and solo and that is what I was hoping to do with this horn. Maybe it’s just because I am not used to it??? I am playing on a 2 1/2 reed (I’m experimenting with different brands right now.) This has been a challenging couple of months or so. Great sound from the new baritone, and to be honest I didn't think the unlacquered instrument sounded bad, either. Does the finish have any effect at all one the tone, or is it just for appearance and surface protection?
