@@hayesp0706 $1,399 on Amazon, $1,299 on eBay. If anyone is ever curious why saxophones are expensive it'd be good to just take one and look at it carefully. Great video Jay! I played a lot the Otto Link 7 and a Leybayle 8. But I've been surprised by the Yamaha (I have a 6C) exactly for what you say (easyness of playing, with reasonably good sound), but also for being so in tune (I play a King Zephyr beginning '50s). But lacks of volume. Now I get the best of my baritone with a Francois Louis, quite open, but price so different...can't compare with the Yamaha, which I find by the way outstanding for the price.

Great comparisons! I've come full circle to me Yamaha 5C, out of frustration. Anyway , I'm interested in hearing a your thoughts on a Eugene Rousseau pc and how that compares to the Meyer and Otto Link HR. Something that is at home in Big band and Jazz sax choir and quartet.

I used to play Bari sax (a rental from the old school) but once I moved schools they didn't let me since there where too many at my new school so now I only play Alto sax but I also do play base drum and bassoon because I still kinda miss being apart of that big ensemble bass foundation that we all love.

Very interesting. I preferred the Yamaha. Both Ricos sounded fairly similar to the Yamaha. Were I being forced to spend more, the Otto Link would be my choice, but I'd still prefer the Yamaha. Fortunately for me, I use the Yamaha 5c myself (on a Chinese cheapo instrument which came with a gawdawful noname mp) and I agree, the 5c is easy to play. I usually use Fibracell reeds.

I have a graftonite for alto and gotta say it didn't come well from factory. Hard and fuzzy as you say. I found out how to work on it and I managed to improve it somewhat. Now it gets me a sharp tone that I like although now it sqwawks if I have it at a certain depth into my mouth. I can't try to fix it lest it disintegrates entirely so I just put up with it until I can buy another one and get it right.

Dayna Stephens here. Crazy Jay, you sound great on every one but weirdly I loved the Graftonite the best lol, then the Yani, Meyer, Link, Metalite then the old faithful Yamaha. Baritone is my fav sax and I tend to like fuzzy and stuffy/warm which is funny enough exactly how you described it in a bad way lol I currently play a stock Yani refaced by Sebastian Knox that is the best mouthpiece I own on any horn but for $19 I'm definitely going to try that Graftonite. Cheers

Hey Dayna thanks for watching and your kind comment. That is funny though. I need to give that one another blow now a year later and see. That Yani piece is very nice though for a dark warm and fuzzy sound.

I will wholeheartedly vouch for the RICO Metalite. It’s super freeblowing, and completely opens up the full register of the horn. It does take a little getting used to, especially if you’re coming from the Yamaha 5c, which by comparison is super stuffy. Never tried the M7 but from what I hear is not nearly as good as the M5. The common opinion is that the M7 is far too open and resistant. Personally, I’d say go for the M5 mouthpiece. Been playing a year and it’s brilliant, especially for $20.

My Hanson Bari came with a Meyer7 so I’ve bought a Yamaha5c to get me going I’m using Legeres Am cut but needed to go up a half size compared to my Alto.

  • @VeryAngryPumpkin1

The Yamaha 5c was my first mouthpiece on Bari, only problem with it, it’s a slim mouthpiece and Bari ligatures don’t always fit, so to be safe you should try a tenor hard rubber ligature, but overall the 5c is the GOAT of beginner mouthpieces

Great to see some Bari videos. The Tone Edge sounds great, not sure if it would be suitable for older vintage instruments. I play a Buescher Bari that is around 100 years old and am currently playing a Caravan Mouthpiece with a rovner Dark ligature as I need a large chamber to bring it into tune.

I played several baritones from the 1930s to the 1960s (so not as old as yours) and a Meyer HR worked great for me on all of them. I believe the have a longer (and larger?) chamber than the Link HR mouthpiece.

Can you do a video on how to get a “Fat meaty” bari sound? I’m wondering if it has something to do with the horn (should it be a Low Bb or a Low A) or are some mouthpieces more suited for that sound like the Yanagisawa and the Otto link tone edge

  • @bligitt

One way to maximize the playability of the Rico mouthpieces is to use them with Rico (D'addario) reeds. I prefer the Graftonite over the Metallite. I get a good sound for very little $. That said I wish the Grftnite came in a 9.

Not sure where you're at, Stu, but if you're in the US and have a regular job, you can add extra money to your tax return by adjusting your W-4. Then use your return check to buy a Bari. That's what I'm doing; I finally did enough of that last year, so I'm buying a Bari Sax off Alibaba.com this year.
