Being an old rock n’ roller, Dana Colley from Morphine. First full on use of a bari I heard was in their song Buena. Bass, drums and bari. No guitar, so good. LeoP too. I’m starting to use some of his licks on tenor, love how he can build the energy in a room. I’m hoping to have a bari by this summer 🙏
Absolute favourite Bari sax player of all time is Leo P. His best solo would be the intro of moani’n. Not only does he play the sax, but he dances with it. Does jumps kicks and is super good with things like overtones. It is a must check out. I’m sure I’m just looking at his solo will change your opinion.
I played bari for years and miss it sometimes, but just don't have a place where I could realistically practice it if I had one. I remember freaking out when I first discovered Edwin McCain while he was touring as the warm up for Hootie and the Blowfish around 1996 or 97 because there was an extended bari solo in the tune Jesters Dreamers and Thieves. The solo is still there in the version on the Honor Among Thieves album, but the extended solo blew teenaged me away because it was the first time I'd heard anyone really play a bari outside of a school band.
Ben Ellman from Galactic is one of my favorite funk bari sax. I like to play along with their tracks like “hit the wall”, “workin in a coal mine” and “blue pepper”. He does a lot of the concepts you discussed here. Great video!
Love it. I bought my bari sax in 1988ish in Germany. A Buddy Henderson. I know...what the heck is a Buddy Henderson?!? I still play it to this day. More BARI SAX!! Favorite Bari song is McArthur Park, Dennis DiBlasio. Favorite Baritone Sax players, Mulligan, Ronnie Cuber, and honestly, I am diggin Leo Pellegrino. The kid can play!
Tremendous video. I played bari in high school and it was the most fun I had in band. I really wish I had a reason to invest in a new bari to play these days. As far as favorite players, Doc Kupka will always be my idol (I used to warm up between my two high school concert bands I had to play in with the solo rhythm from Soul Vaccination just to entertain my dad in the crowd), but Mike Terry who played those iconic Motown riffs has been someone that has really really wanted me to pick up bari again.
my fav bari sax player is by far Leo P he inspires me to keep going and pursue my dream career as professional bari sax player, my fav solo by him is definitely white lava go check it out its absolutely fire. also just a quick tip when you're playing any sax expecialy if you're performing i recomend dancing, this may sound a little much but it certainly helps me a lot with keeping time and it also gives music a lot more character and shows that music isn't always just sound and you can also feel emotions that you would with listening my just watching.
Hey Noah! I agree - Leo P is awesome, and he has been fantastic for the bari sax world. I agree with some movement when you're playing. You don't necessarily have to dance around but you don't want to stand there like a statue. A little movement adds to the groove! Best of luck in pursuing your dream 🎷
Harry carney his rendering of sophisticated lady is great and his circular breathing awesome, joe temperley his mellow sound and Gerry mulligan. Thanks Scott for these advice… comes right in time before we play next week the trick for fast breathing works . I played the baritone as I was on the tenor and alto … trying to play a couple of measures in the low notes with the same breath but now I’m ready for the 24 6 to 4
I have NO idea how Gerry Mulligan could play so mellow. My mellow is like a tsunami warning. Harry Carney is my fav though. Cool video, I will play around with some syncopated octave jumps after my next practice. Thanks!
Scott what is it about the PMauriat sax that won you over? I noticed that all your horns are Mauriat’s. I’m not experienced enough to really rate horns. I have a 66RTenor but play a VI because of the lighter weight, key height and hype. I do like the dark tone of the PM. Why do you prefer the PM? Just curious.
Hey Noah, I just fell in love with the P. Mauriat 67rx from the first minute I picked it up. I love how fat the sound is, how crisp the articulations are, and how easy it is to play. When I was searching for a new alto, I played about 100 saxes over 2 years, and the second I played this one, I bought it and never played my old horn again, which was a Yamaha Custom.
@@ScottPaddock Been working on that a bit more and after two days of trying it just suddenly clicked. I still sometimes struggle to get back into that sound on the first try but it's getting a lot better.
Gotta be Mulligan and his solo on Blueport from the “What is There to Say” album. But speaking of MF, the Chameleon album and Superbone Meets the Bad Man has Bruce J doing some remarkable work. But he’s not Mulligan :-).
I use a Shure clip-on mic, which is definitely not made for recording bari. The sound is really thin, so I double the track and add a virtual bass amp and lower the volume of the 2nd track just so it adds fatness to the tone.
Letz do it, Scott, you are full of trix and Elvish Presley syncopated Bari groovy bass, that is being loose as a goose you Funky fella of sax you! :-) Take our breath away Spaceman !! :-) Beam me up, Scottie! Edit # don't really know any Bari songs 'cept for some Gerry Mulligan airs but can appreciate the altissimo on this very sound piece ya - th-cam.com/video/NesVwk2NLTE/w-d-xo.html
Cool thing I figured out about key height if you lower them a bit & adjust octave key so it's less flush u can create a feel & response similar to P mauriat pro horns on Yas 26
I just started playing bari sax in high school. Absolutely love it. My favorite bari sax player is Leo P. Brasshouse is awesome
Same well except i started in 8th grade
Bari sax is so awesome! I wish I could afford one.
yeah, even the cheap ones are very expensive
ppl be wanting us to spit multiple thousands to tens of thousands of dollars out our rear
Why not rent one? There are even options to rent/buy a sax which would make it much easier to afford
$1,500 for a good 1960's Conn made in Mexico.
I recently bought a new Antigua Powerball on ebay for under $2,500.
I managed to borrow a Vito bari made by Yanagisawa for the next 9 months. Loving it. It's been 50 years since I played a bari.

Morphine!!! Yes, they were one of the firsts to really use a bari sax like that.
My fav bari players: James Carter, Jason Weber and Gerry Mulligan (these 3 cover a broad spectrum).
James Carter!!!
Absolute favourite Bari sax player of all time is Leo P. His best solo would be the intro of moani’n. Not only does he play the sax, but he dances with it. Yeah, Leo P is a killer on the bari sax, and that Moanin video is great! He redefined the role and sound of the bari sax.
I played bari for years and miss it sometimes, but just don't have a place where I could realistically practice it if I had one. 😁😁😁 Nothing beats a great bari solo!
"Stay Loose with Bruce" is looping on my phone right now. It has everything in it! Great videos!
I do love funk and bari. Please continue doing more bari sax because you're doing so good !
Thanks!! I honestly don't play bari very often. I need to get it out of the case more 😀
Yup. The Badman rocks that one . My absolute favorite!!!
👍👍
Ben Ellman from Galactic is one of my favorite funk bari sax. I like to play along with their tracks like “hit the wall”, “workin in a coal mine” and “blue pepper”. He does a lot of the concepts you discussed here. Great video!
Thanks so much for your videos. Great bari sound Scott. Is that a high baffle mouthpiece? Tip opening? reed?
I'm a Mulligan fan. Love his version of "Waltzing Mathilda" on "Idol Gossip"
Great choices!

Bari Sax Rules bro. Especially in the paddock!!!!
Some of my favorite baritone saxophone players formed the Bluiett Baritone Nation back in the 1990s. Four of a kind will always beat a full house.
Great vid! Are you tonguing all of your notes?
Check out Tim McKay’s solo on Don’t Fly Spirit with the Jacob Mann Big Band. I just love his sound.
I love Gerry Mulligan BUT: Very close to him I put Serge Chaloff. Great sounding horn, Scott. I have the PMB 300UL! You're killin' it on funk!
Thanks! I played the UL also and really liked it.

My fav’s Ronnie Cuber’s Passion Fruit solo Jazzfest Berlin
Yessss
Great video, Scott! If only my tongue were so fast ... favorite bari player is Ronnie Cuber.
Yeah, he's a killer!

Circular breathing on the bari, I need to check that out!
Great tips thanks, favourite bari player has to be Leo P.
The king of funk bari is
Doc Kupka from Rower of Power!!!
Favorite solo is Leo’s solo in “Coco”
I have NO idea how Gerry Mulligan could play so mellow. My mellow is like a tsunami warning. Harry Carney is my fav though. Cool video, I will play around with some syncopated octave jumps after my next practice. Thanks!
Yeah, I hear you! He has sooooo much control over his bari sound. He was a true master of the instrument.
Leo P, literally dances lol.
Ronnie Cuber is my current favorite Bari sax player
Bari saxes have a really cool sound. I think I'll stick with my little soprano sax, though. I haven't even been playing that for six months quite yet.
😁😁
During soundcheck, find the low note that shakes the venue's walls. Use that a lot in solos. While playing long notes on it. Bring the walls down.
🤟🤟😎
Glad I’m not the only one doing this lol
My old director said bari has two volume dynamics- “nuclear forte” and “in the case” 😂
My favourite Bari sax player is of course Serge Chaloff.
Yeah, he's definitely at the top of the list.
What is your clip on bell mic setup on Bari and alto? I usually play the wonderful EV 27, big dynamic diaphragm.
Hey is that syros mouthpiece? I'm diging the sound of it Been wanting to get my hands on one
Yeah, that's the Syos Scott Paddock Signature mp - that thing REALLY blows! Huge sound and super easy to play. Here's a discount code: SCOTTXSYOS
What kind of neck strap are you using for your berry sax?
Since this is specifically funk Bari gotta give a shout out to the funky doctor himself Stephen “Doc” Kupka from Tower of Power
Yes Sir!!! He created the genre of funky bari sax.
Cool!

What kind of mouthpieces do you use? Or at least on the bari? Looking for something new - thanks!
Hey! I use the Syos Scott Paddock Signature Series. Here's a discount code if you are interested in checking it out: SCOTTXSYOS
Gerry Mulligan - "K4 Pacific"
favorite player: Leo P (Of Courses) favorite bari solo: Leo P's Moanin' Solo/feature
Bluiett. Don’t forget Hamiet Bluiett!
My favorite bari sax player is Ronnie Cuber R.I.P🙏
What kind of neck strap is that, I’ve been looking for one that would be comfortable
I built mine out of a couple harnesses and straps.
As a beginner, I’m curious on how you get that “quacky” sharp sound. Idk what I gotta do to make my play sound like that
It's all about how you put air into the sax
@@ScottPaddock Been working on that a bit more and after two days of trying it just suddenly clicked. I still sometimes struggle to get back into that sound on the first try but it's getting a lot better.
Cecil Payne, "Bringing Up Father"
Me

Yeah, Maynard had some great albums!
Nombre de la boquilla

Dude I am still stuck on Leo Parker. I like Lion's Roar and Jumpin Leo
I just discovered Leo Parker. He puts so much air into that horn! He’s inspired me to do more repeating notes in solos, as Scott suggests here.
My favorite bari sax solo has to be Harry Carney’s “Sophisticated Lady”
Yeah!! That's a classic 😁
Paul Nedzela
Leo P. Jerzy Jewlz

LEO P!!!!! BBC PROMS MOANIN
HOW ARE YOU GETTING A BRIGHT GREEN SYOS MOUTHPEICE, I SEE THEM NOWHERE ON THE WEBISTE WTH
actually, how are you getting these neon bright ones at all, the only neon bright i see on the site is cyan blue
@@atozcuber9365 Hey! I think they changed the material they are using from when I got mine. They used to have a lot of neon color options.
Cool thing I figured out about key height if you lower them a bit & adjust octave key so it's less flush u can create a feel & response similar to P mauriat pro horns on Yas 26
I'll leave that to the repairmen 🤣😂🤣 Mine tweaks mine just right on all of my horns, but it definitely makes a big differnece.
@@ScottPaddock 😆 yea
It’s kinda scary, his sax real shit talks bruh, got more personality than me.
