Hello buddy! Thanks for the video! I have a Golf V Variant 1.9 TDI BLS, which had a connecting rod failure at 105,000 km. It was repaired, and since then, I’ve driven another 210,000 kilometers. In the meantime, the turbocharger failed, but no cause was found (both the feed and return lines were fine but were replaced as a precaution). Less than two years later, the turbo failed again, got repaired, and shortly after, the dual-mass flywheel went bad, which was unusual because it didn’t even last four years. Then I had misfires in the first cylinder, checked it out, and saw that a hydraulic lifter was completely worn down along with the cam, of course. I had everything fixed (camshaft plus lifters), and the car ran fine until suddenly, I noticed this loud hammering sound. That’s when I realized it must be the connecting rod bearing. However, I don’t think the crankshaft can be saved, as the engine stalled at idle and wouldn’t start with the starter either. My question: Can a damaged connecting rod bearing lower oil pressure and cause all these issues due to insufficient lubrication (two turbochargers, camshaft, lifters, etc.)? I also think the imbalance could explain why the dual-mass flywheel wore out so quickly. Or do you have any experience with oil pumps in this regard? Could it be that the oil pump isn’t building enough pressure? That would explain the damages too. Thanks a lot for your time and once again for the video!!! Best regards from Germany!
Owner of a golf 5 1.9 tdi BLS here. 300.000 kms. Never had a serious problem. It depends how you treat your car. Do you wait to warm up? Do you leave it 1 minute to cool down before of shutting off? You can't say they are bad engines.
Difference between the ASZ and BLS style is the big end / journal size. The asz has a bigger big end, so not only is it wider, it's a bigger circumference, meaning that the bearing is actually turning slower on the crank. Also worth mentioning, good quality bearings are not all the same, and the upper one is usually marked with 'Sputter', which is usually darker in colour, harder wearing, designed to take the downward force of the rod coming down after the power stroke. I also found an AXB on the T5, has the bigger style rods, so people don't need to ASZ swap these. Thanks for the content as always 🙏
Hey Nathan, cracked rods are common at modern engines. More stability due bigger surface and "teeth" of the crack. So they could down size to smaller, lighter bolts. Nice video, love the humbleness. Regards Greg
Hey Greg thank you mate that makes perfect sense I’ve never seen it in person I’ve only seen machined faces but your absolutely right 👍 appreciate the king words
A great video. Thanks for putting it out there. I have a caddy, 2005, swb with a BLS. I have been told they are lemons but your video has given me a better perspective. Watching your vids from Australia. We have no content here. Thanks for what you do, great work mate, keep it up.
Thank you bud appreciate the comment, video is my pleasure glad people watch and maybe make use of them 👍 a new set of bearings and rods was cheap enough and not to bad to do.
I personally like the 2001-2005 1.9l PD engine ATD etc. I didn't know about the reduced bearing width but I had read that "Bxx" engines moved to using cracked con rods which occasionally break through the side of the block. I also read that VW went to cheaper PD injectors (Bosch to Siemens ?) which aren't as reliable. A friend who used to work for Cummins told me that cracked rods work fine but the manufacturing process demands complete cleanliness for a reliable outcome.
I've a 1.9bls with 192k miles it made 144bhp on dyno it's running perfect. Does 52-55mpg. Just change oil the every 9k miles with VW507 5W30 and filters ect
Great content as always! I got my stickers and T-shirt the other day! Stickers went straight on the caddy! Ah yeh! Showing off DTE in the depths of the south west! Keep it going Nathan! Always look forward to Friday!
Is the BRS 102 on the naughty list, I have just bought a T5 on an 06 plate I am second owner it has full service history from new right up to when I bought it in august really nice van runs and pulls like a train it has just done 186000 miles, just reading the forums etc why do people say the 1.9 TDI is shit it is starting to worry me now because it uses 1/2 liter of oil every 6-8 hundred miles have been told that is excessive and engine is scrap. Also are the injectors always noisy on these engines as the same person said that they are scrap too, he has offered me 2000 for the van I paid 6000 private sale just cannot afford major engine work at the moment. The van runs great no smoke no misfires great on fuel It is absolutely mint in reflex silver electric windows all the bells and whistles etc do you think he is just after my van.
Good explanation as to why the BLSis the BoLlockS of the VAg Engibe Range, no retaining lugs on the shells, rough arsed finishing on the shells, narrow journals
Thanks Karter mate 👍 is a shame they made the BLS and a couple others as the PD’s are known for being the best 4 pot diesel then they had to make a crap one 🤷 I do wonder if I could have fitted the bearings from a stronger version. Maybe someone will comment and update my knowledge.
Great video Nathan. Besides regular oil changes etc. On mechanical only fuel injectors - when to change the nozzles & set opening pressures is the big question. We had a specialist do them for us @ around as low as 80,000km & high as 120,000km & sure enough the spray patterns were off on some & even the odd drip - not sealing. Not servicing Injectors also contributes to engine oil contamination. The shorter life of modern electronic controlled ones is eye watering prices as the entire injector is replaced by the diesel specialists.
Thanks for the vid! I've rounded those hidden bolts when I tried to replace the sump of my 350 000K Golf V. Will give it another go with the flywheel in the correct position ;)
Thank you for the video Nathan. Surprised at the lack of sludge in the sump and the condition of the bearings considering the 200k mileage. Rowan's Caddy has definitely been well looked after. Top work mate.
The 1.9 ASZ and ARL crankshafts are stronger aswell + extra counter weights. Unlike the PD105: BLS, BKC, BXE engines Not sure what crankshaft the 2.0BKD uses but must be a weaker variant to a ASZ/ARL, maybe the same as a PD105. Darkside like to build their BKD engines on a bored out 1.9 block and crank from the stronger ASZ/ARL or the 2.0 8V PD BMM engine (doesn't require boring out) 👍👍
Really want a caddy looking like yours just slightly different with wheels and air suspension couple other bits but pd130 engine in would you ever consider pd130 in the caddy I know you have in the t5.
Ah darran mate I really appreciate that I really do, maybe in time the channel will get a boost 👍 I’m happy with the numbers now because it’s manageable to reply to you guys if it’s explodes I’d be overwhelmed and feel bad for not replying to you
Yep 5w40 pd oil is the way to go. Always add 500ml of Synth grade Lucas Oil Stabiliser when you're replacing the oil - much quieter and smoother running.
is the BXE also affected of this? would frequent oil change at 6500 miles give some protection with good 5w40 oil? i am worried of the touran i bought. low mileage, arround 100'000 miles on it right now...i use 505.01 spec oil..liquimoly turbo diesel semi synth... id love to get some feedback and help from you before...i do the maintenance myself since i live in switzerland and the labour prices are high to the extreme...greetings from switzerland! PS i have a 1.9 2010 6 speed manual Touran.
Very interesting video man 👍 question to you because you are a pro… I have a caddy, it has been standing still for three years. Can I drive it to a work shop? No problem because the old oil? And…what service program do you recomend? Thanks!
Did mine as preventive maintenance when we bought our Caddy. Got the sputter bearing kit off Darkside. Mine weren’t all that bad when I did them, much the same as these. Granted ours only had 145k when we bought it.
Had the same issue with my BXE engine in a Passat rod through the block 😢 It was serviced every )k without fail, have see other with nearly 300 k and never missed a beat though 😮
Evening Nathan….Wasn’t just VW BLS….I had a Peugeot 406 1.9tdi estate … ex Taxi, owner driver, only had 180k on it…this is a small island 👍😜🇮🇲. Threw the rod out the front , similar thing, almost, I didn’t know that you had to re-torque the rod bolts at 150k, or they threw a rod…I do now…Ah yeh..👍🤣🇮🇲👌😳
The rods are cracked after finish machining of the con rod bores, this is to make a more accurate method of assembling the rods as the hairline crack on the two parts will mate to each other exactly as they were prior to snapping, downside is they have to stay as a matched pair.
@@YTDTETV Hi, I only know this as I have manufactured many years ago a hydraulic fixture to crack the rods in a pre determined stress point in the casting process of the con rods and it is literally done just prior to fitting them.
@@andyclarke3895 hey bud that’s awesome I appreciate the information 👍 i would like to have seen notches to hold the bearings but I wernt mad at the way they done the end caps 👍

It could be loosing its prime in the fuel system i.e when he parks with the front end up the fuel is draining back to the tank he may have a slight air leak in the system when he parks with the front end down it will be keeping some fuel up in the engine bay

Hey bud the 2.0 TDI is a very good engine and taking them up to 180hp is no bother, the turbos are normally the first to be pushed but they have a decent size turbo that can take the power, depending on how it’s driven and how old the clutch is that second on the list but if driven hard now and again and serviced like normal it will be fine 👍👍
Hey bud I didn’t say they where no good I just havnt seen it before I guess the uneven surface would stop any movement and is actually the best way to do it 👍
