I am with Alex, like he said with his recent review of the X5 M50I, a great reserved and understated luxury SUV with 525HP under the hood... For a 4 Door BMW get the M5 (for performance) or Step up to the ALPINA B7 (for luxury ). Great review as always Alex!
I think BMW NEEDS some shouty, more aggressive looking cars The 5-series/M5 is pretty tame, and the 8-Series is the perfect antidote. Definitely bumps the style up a notch or two, without trying too hard. The styling is a definite plus, but the extra $30k to get a better looking car is a bit much
BMW should have made the 8 Series Gran Coupe (and the 2 Series Gran Coupefor that matter) a liftback like the outgoing 4 Series Gran-Coupe or the Audi A5 and A7 sportbacks or the Kia Stinger. Hopefully the new 4 Series will be a liftback like its predecessor

@Alex- Do you think a time will ever come where you show the actual testing of the vehicle? 0-60, braking, fuel econ calculations, etc? I think it would add more excitement(not that it is not there, as you're one of the most thorough reviewers out there) to the reviews.
I hate how BMW cut cost on the M8. No panoramic roof/sunroof option, no massaging seats (X3M/X4M seats), smaller infotainment screen. All of this is available in the cheaper M5. 🤨
Hi Alex you compared the 8 series with the 5 series but unlike the 6 series which was built on a 5 series chassis the 8 series is built on a 7 series chassis in the same place as a 7 series which is different from where 5 and 6 series are produced. Also its the widest BMW ever even wider than X7 and 7 series. On top of that 8 series has much more high end interior as compared to 5 series. For example 8 series has milano leather as standard. It has carbon core body etc. Its BMW's flagship car. So I feel the difference in price of a 5 series and 8 series is justified.
If money wasn't an issue I'd definitely get the 8 series over the 5 just because I think the 8 would ride & handle better because of it's size. Besides the performance I think the 8 just shouts elegance & classiness a little better than the 5.
I love how the RS7 has 0 inches of headroom in the rear. 😂 the M8/M6 is gorgeous, but I’m still a firm believer that the CLS is the champion of this class. I could be biased though.

It would be old news as soon as they have their eye on another toy. Which is why to us these are dream cars. Sure some owners will appreciate them but most lease and dispose quickly. And many have several other toys to drive and this would just be a show off toy until the next.

That said, it's just terminology and no one cares what I or anyone else thinks. The word doesn't matter as much as the thing itself.
Great review Alex. I'm going to challenge you on one thing. The M5 does not have a slightly more practical rear seat lol. It has a significantly more practical rear seat. Can anyone explain to me why I as a five foot nine 200 lb man can fit in the backseat of a 2 Series comfortably, but my children struggle to fit in the back of an 8. LOL
In terms of performance the 8 series would smoke the TLX but in terms of money, the TLX a much better value. The 8 series is wayyyyy overpriced. Criminally overpriced.

I read somewhere that the two most common cars driven by millionaires are Camrys and Accords. I suspect there is not a lot of price-sensitivity in people shopping in the M8's price range.
Well, I do not remember, it may not have been a rigorous survey and it may have been referencing a time period before the SUV madness. The larger point was no one who can only marginally afford a wildly expensive car is all that likely to be shopping for a wildly expensive luxury sports sedan.
The current generation 8 Series should of never been called the 8 Series. Should of stuck with the 6 Series name. BMW is trying to fight the S-Class coupe/cabriolet, but was far off the mark. Like you I would just get the M5 Comp, but I'm Mercedes fanboy so I'll have the E63 S wagon 🙂

Like Audi back in the day. You got the 80, 90,100, and v8, which then changed into the A4, 6, 8. Now they offer A3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and now offer suv crossovers as well, the q series. It's absolutely idiotic.

A friend of mine had one of the 80s 8 series with the v12. Fantastic vehicle. A guy in a delivery van sideswiped it....totaled.
