"This car is in Sports Mode all the time!" Great Active driving part, and autobahn view. Thomas, I hear the autobahn is in danger of losing its legendary derestricted status. Apparently the ADAC (Germany's biggest auto club) 'softened its stance' on autobahn speed limits, partially due to climate fears. The Green Party put forward a motion in the German parliament calling for autobahn speed limits. It was defeated but now the ADAC has come out saying it is 'no longer fundamentally against' the idea of speed limits and has called for a review. Irrespective of what happens after the present situation, do you think the unlimited autobahn is finished? If so, will BMW (et al) continue to build road cars that do 200 km/h, or 305 km/h! Many thanks.

My family owns a 2020 X5 and although the wireless charging should work well with the wireless Apple car play, it actually overheats the phone because BMW didn’t put any sort of ventilation under or on the side of the charger. It’s a pretty irritating design flaw that was overlooked. One thing I will say is maybe the fan for the cooled cupholders is powerful enough to reach the charger. I will definitely have to test that.

Prefer the look and more non-animal-skin investment by Mercedes; BMW seat _form_ however is better and the drive feels more natural

Very nice and interesting review! I totally agree that there should not be big compromise for comfort because of sportiness. I think most of the m-performance cars with adaptive suspension offer best of both worlds.

No rear wheel steering because of the M-philosophy. That's the most stupid thing I've ever heard. It's already 4WD. If it were for the M-philosophy they should've made it only rear wheel drive like the M2, M3 and M4. I would've liked it a lot with the real wheel steering as it helps with the agility of the car. But I guess agility isn't an M-philosophy for BMW? Stupid.

I drove a 4 wheel steering car back in the early 90s. A Honda Prelude. Nobody bought it so Honda gave up on 4WS. 30 yrs later, here we are!
This car is crazy fast, but it's so expensive it's in the range of a Taycan isn't it? Think about that comparison. (The tunnel would be kind of boring if you had a Taycan though. ;) ) I like the look of this car but if I could buy a Taycan at the same price, I think that would be my choice.
Turning traction control off on a public road is not recommneded? Let me tell you how I learned to drive sonny. I learned on a 1979 Chevy Impala station wagon! RWD, V8, 3 spd Auto, in the snow, seat belt laws were just coming in, empty parking lots on Sundays... spin that car and learn!! That thing was huge!! (I think you could land a helicopter on it) It had a rear facing seat in the trunk too. Look the Impala Wagon up Thomas.

I dont like the paint. Only highly conservative paints for me, and shiny finished with silver wheels. No black wheels, no matte paints, no purple, lime green shit paint etc....
If only the rest of the world thought that way.

Looks like an overpriced Kia Stinger.
Other way around, Kia stinger is modeled after the BMW M6 Gran Coupe and this is modeled as an upgrade to the M6.

I don't know why, but this thing does nothing for me. The styling, the details, the engine tone, interior... it all feels very uninspiring. Which sums up my current feeling about BMW overall.
Rudolf van der Ven I have the exact same feeling about the lates BMWs. Before they really were the pinnacle of driving machines. Now it doesn’t feel as special unfortunately.
They're all incredibly boring to me, zero character in the design. This M8 just looks like a colossal waste of money.
I don't understand why BMW changed the windowline and got rid of the "Hofmeister Knick".

The interior/dashboard is disaster compared to Merc and Audi.
I have it and is a bit stiff but normal suspension setting is actually comfy and wonderful, not bumpy..
it is a sport car should be stiffer :)
But the difference between m sport mode and normal mode is actually huge and beautiful normal mode is so comfy and on the amazing German highways not even the stiff mode feels stiff lol
in every detail the bmw m6 gran coupe is a lot nicer. starting from the inside - enormous difference.m8 is more pump and " Chinese "for me. , the line looks very ugly, its like in the AMG GT 4door and Porsche Panamera. such an ugly hump on the back door. the only thing that is better is xdrive
If anyone is wondering if you can use this car as a daily driver, yes, you can. It is not as comfortable as a 7 series, but this is not that type of car. You can drive it around town without any problems, the suspension is stiff but not in an annoying way, in 2 weeks you are completely accommodated with it, you will even feel the need to put the suspension in the sport settings, because you feel it to "light" on higher speeds. M8 GC competition or M8 Coupe competition it is just a matter of taste. I prefer M8 GC competition. The car is a monster when referring to its power, it keeps pulling no matter what. It is an excellent car. You also need a little bit of time to get used with the brakes, being a innovation in this field. If you want to buy this type of car, don't hesitate, you won't have any regrets. P.S. you need to keep in mind that this engine needs to be revved up from time to time, in order to keep its perfect working parameters.
Booorrrrrriiiiing from BMW, exterior is getting old, nothing new about interior, seems like AUDI and MERCEDES is ahead......
Now thats a GT car! I think for that price the comfort setting should be softer though
Thomas, I disagree, I have the M8 GC here in the UK, our roads are far worse than German ones, and the cars absolutely fine as a daily driver

It's the perfect car for all those without the money to buy it, lease it instead to 'look rich' and now cry for government help because they cannot continue their pretend-livestyle.

In this category Maserati Quattroporte is the best choice in my opinion. Especially if you want sound.
Literally the worst choice 😂. Much much and i mean MUCH worse than any of the competitors and outdated.
I would rather take this BMW.
I prefer cars like the Subaru WRX STI which are more RAW and you actually feel the speed and can have fun with them even when driving it in the city obeying the speed limits. Cars like this BMW hide the speed too much which makes them boring and dangerous unless you live in Germany and use the autobahn. Just expressing my thoughts from Canada, Ontario where the fastest legal speed limit is 100km/h....^__^

i see a few 8 series here and there on the roads, i think they lack presence and only car people know what it is. it basically blends in traffic as the nice looking bmw and not stand out in the crowd.
What is the reason for the quarter window in the rear? Somebody PLEASE explain this to me? The car would have a so much more elegant line if the rear door window was just a rear door window!!

Black paint with black kidneys and black interior. WTF, who specs a car like that? Especially a car for reviews.
The interieur is a dealbreaker for me - so much worse than other BMW's, especially not nearly as good as the Interieurs from the A7 or S Coupe
But the Exterieur is stunning

As long as the E-LSD is available, RWD is fine on a dry road. Young people under 50 just do not have the experience of driving high HP motor with RWD with an open differential and no ABS like the old days.
Undoubtedly a good car, but personally speaking this is just too brash. Some will love it, but I prefer street sleepers.

Thomas, we respect you so much but... don't you think that 'promoting' new, more or less same designs of cars, predecessors of which are usually better and last longer, goes against any common sense of your anti-animal-skin environmental proposition? Why not we buy/invest in the previous versions with new devices / engines, just like they do in the aviation industry?!
Well we are a channel for new cars, so there is hardly anything else we could do. And people will still buy new cars so what we can do is give good advice on how to make your new car purchase more sustainable. I totally agree that the most environmentally friendly car is the one that is already built.

The 911 is clearly a sportscar layout whereas the M8 is rather GT
