Madlibs skill with arrangement is one of my favorite things about his beats. He’s made beats where all he does is loop a sample and leaves it almost completely as is but he finds ways to change it up slightly and keep it engaging. He always keeps your attention.

Just like Alchemist, there is really no crazy secret in the way he produces. It’s all in the samples he chooses. It’s his ear for loops. Which is something you really can’t teach. Aka the “loop digga.” It’s all in the sample, what section of the sample he uses, and how he flips it. Flat Tummy Tea is a perfect example.

Love the techniques you showed off in this video. My favorite section has to be the panning section, since not many producers pan their sounds. I would love to see this type of video done on Q-Tip, since the techniques he uses are insane!!! Especially on tribe's final album We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service.
Madlib,one of the greats...I am all about doing things outside of the box,which is why I have 4 entirely different samplers,and a hybrid studio setup,part digital and analog.I also do not buy what most folks seem to use,not really on purpose,yet I like gear that i can dig deep into.I dont use sample packs,I make my own sounds,and sometimes use sound libraries if I need a sound live while I am spinning.Those sounds came with the hardware samplers,records,CDs,casettes,etc.
Love the breakdown bro. Subbed. A lot of madlibs production is time stretching samples. Either a high key sample that maybe 108bpms time stretched to fit a 92 bpm grid as an example. Also there’s tricks called side chain compression that’s used sometimes to create a “ducking” effect when the sample is side chained to the drums so the sample dips when a kick or snare is triggered. Just some tips from a beat maker of 25 years. Salute 💯.
When it comes to his collaborations, I’ve heard that Madlib doesn’t release his multi-levels to recording artists. I think this further adds to his gritty and dark mix aesthetic. I can’t imagine hearing his beats mixed by someone else.
Nice work. That wobble thing you are talking about is something that happens on the Roland sp samplers. When you adjust the speed of a sample on an sp it does a weird time stretching thing that creates this effect. Nice work on re creating that sound! Subbed!
I've noticed a lot of bass guitar on newer madlibs, and some synth bass, he's definitely playing both himself. I really don't hear a ton of sampled bass as much these days, but he no doubt still uses them a lot
The warble effect on the bass is to do with the sp303 I cant remember the name of the effect on it but that is what madlib used for the sound, since madlib mainly uses an ipad to make beats now if you notice you dont hear the effect as much.
something i would add is that some of that "rawness" comes from the artifacts and nuances that come from the sample and sampler he's using provides. i saw a comment about side chain compression and i see you used a tremolo for the bass and i'm almost positive that madlib didn't use either of those (but still you did a great job using it!). Almost positive the "wobbling" effect on the bass is just a result of stretching the sample with either an older sampler (roland sp 303-404) or a program that uses a different type of stretching (the "beats" style of stretching in ableton is an example). And at least in more classic madlib beats i don't think he ever touched side chain compression, but more likely used the compressor on a roland sampler or something similar, and ran it pretty hard. A lot of the effects in madlib's beats that may seem mistifying are just from the hardware/software he happened to be working with, and that's why i like the way you find ways to get creative with FL studio and make your own sounds. This a great video and inspired me to get back to chopping samples! peace

This was a fantastic analysis. Madlib's beats are so dense, that it's sometimes hard for me to be able to figure out what is going on with each individual element within the beat. You really nailed it. Great video!
The Beat Konducta's electronic beats are as good as the sample ones, but no one talks about. Listen to the DJ Rels project and Mind Fusion Vol. 1 mix and you'll see what I'm talking about.

great video my man but I think the tremolo that you hear on madlibs beats is basically the warping on the sp1200 or whatever it was that he keeps using even today. its the way the samples chopped / warped that gives is this tremolo I think
Hmm I am not too sure about that. If you listen to Thuggin, you can hear the sample "melody" portion is untouched, but the bass has the wobble. I am thinking that this would indicate that he separated the bass out from the "melody" portion, and used a specific effect on it rather than the entire sample being warped. Edit: others are also saying it was an effect from the SP303. So I might be wrong about this
@@NavieD yeah that makes sense absolutely, but Ive always thought that he'd use 2 tracks you know one highpassed for the melody with a different warp and one lowpassed w the bass but again Im just speculating I have no idea, that's just what it sounded to me. Regardless of how he achieved it your technique with the tremolo is definitely super useful and Im about to try it out myself :D
Its not the sp1200. Probably the SP-606 or either the 303. It’s very recognizable for users of these machines. I know Madlib used to use the 606 as his main machine. I even brought mine out at a show and had Madlib sign it for me. He was like ‘’Thats wassup!’ As far for the bass being seperate. It could be just that the effect stands out more in the long bass tones. Alternatively it could indeed be true that he uses the isolator effect on the SP to isolate the bass. However I’d find it more likely that he would get the bass part from another sample. Because if he would isolate the bass from the same sample the tempos would still match. What you’re hearing is the tempo being slowed down or sped up through the timestretch algorithm of the machine. I’m pretty sure it was originally a side effect of a tempo change he tried to accomplish. It’s kind of funny that cats try to recreate the effect with a tremelo to me. But hey, its all about being creative and trying out new things.

Lol the wobble effect your talking about is phace cancellation. You play 2 notes right next to each other, which causes the frequencies to overlap and wobble. Classic effect in Drum n Bass

that "wobble effect" is simply the result of time stretching a loop on the sp 303 / 404 - post bass boost... that beat you used as an example is literally just a loop, like the whole thing.... strings, drums and all.. he didn't do anything but pitch the sample up probably on the turntable itself, boost the bass, loop the sample, then time stretch it to whatever tempo he was feeling at the time.

Does that classify it a lo-fi beat? He's probably the lo-fi King. Also the insane amount of change ups, vocal samples. Some of the basses he uses are so rare. not only do most of his beats containted sampled basses but most of the beats he's well known for are legit just whole looped samples... rare and eclectic choices no doubt but the effects here you're tackling are mostly just already existent within the raw loop

Madlib's Definently One of The Creators of Lofi Hip Hop IMO. Along With Dilla, DOOM, & Nujabes.

not only do most of his beats containted sampled basses but most of the beats he's well known for are legit just whole looped samples... rare and eclectic choices no doubt but the effects here you're tackling are mostly just already existent within the raw loop
