  • @JL-Breaks
    @JL-Breaks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Dude… these are really great tips. I make beats of this genre as this is the genre I was raised on- mostly for beat battles- and often at the end I’m sitting figuring out what it needs and it’s definitely more focus on the texture of my drums. I used the pitch down on my high hats and your tip of side chaining my ambient sounds on a current beat I’m working on and really really helped. My shit went from pretty good to super flavorful…. Thank you so much!! Now I’m off to binge watch all your videos lol

It world be greatly appreciated and would help people like me who are really disorganized to have some kind of formula to keep things from getting messy. Keep doing great work

      @NavieD  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hallowell! Thank you for your lovely comment. Interestingly enough, I am probably similar to you. I am not very organized and tidy - but this doesn't really hinder my process at all. I put a video out on Subtractive Arrangement that you might find helpful when it comes to workflow. Beyond that, I will have to think about how I would approach this topic. Thanks for the suggestion

      @TheSozeone 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NavieD Thanks for the reply Navie. I watched your video on subtractive arrangement and you explained it very clearly and i was able to use the method right away and i found it very intuitive. Im not organized at all and its something i need to work on since it actually does hinder my process cause i get completely lost if i dont label everything, especially in fl studio. You're new video is useful since i found out that can download templates that label everything for me. Lots of good tips here. I like how you've broken down what makes these beats sound vintage. But also that you present them as optional. I love the boombap sound, but as a qualityphile, personally I would skip some of the things that were shortcomings of the tech back then: keep the pitches accurate, use the NY compression but avoid muddiness, keep things stereo, maybe skip the noise track. Essentially making the beats as they were envisioned to be but couldn't given the equipment of the time.

    Hi Navie, great video, thank you so much. Hope there is more boom bap to come!. Question, the melody lines of the upright bass puzzles me. This is not something one bass player could actually play, or...? I tried to look up some sheet music for upright bass but it is all single notes. Could you please elaborate on when/why you use this? Sounds great but I would never ever have thought of a bass line like that myself.

    • @NavieD
      @NavieD  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you Sonja! I am actually filming a sequel to this video today.
      As for the upright bass, my recommendation is more focused on the tonality of the sound and how well it fits with the aesthetic. Many of these beats sampled jazz songs, so it fits in with the genre pretty nicely. Sorry for the confusion. I just play it like a regular instrument using the piano roll in FL.

    So if you're really tryna go 80s OLD school you probably wanna find a full drum break, lot of turntable emulation, think like a deejay. Sample choices are recommended not to be random and find a reason, to put it in the song. A benefit is you won't have to add tape effects. Listen to the source material a lot before you sample it so you know how you wanna use them.

  • @leewightman8619
    @leewightman8619 ปีที่แล้ว

    Getting the drums right is the most important thing if the drums don't sound authentic it just doesn't work I try only use samples I don't use sample packs really I take direct from the source I usually play a bassline from the keyboard as trying to find bassline samples that fit is not the easiest thing

    Just out of curiosity: how does it work if you want to sell sampled beats (on a platform like Beatstars)? Most of the time when I sample, the original sample is still recognizable, even though it has been chopped and pitched.

    • @NavieD
      @NavieD  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most likely, the artist/label will be responsible for clearing the sample. But knowing this, many artists/labels avoid using sampled beats since they'd rather avoid the headache
