All my young producers, boom bap had one thing in common: hard drums at the forefront of the beats, and usually with a lot of swing. (Some DAWs today have groove templates with MPC swing - try those, if you have them.) Often NY compression was used on the drums as well to make them hit harder.

Well it's free, I used it for a while and I like it better than Fruity Slicer. But I am enjoying Serato Sample a bit more because it's far less buggy. Momentum still gets used here and there if I want to do some heavy experimentation
Always appreciated! Always respected for the beat navigation Navi D.... Can you please do a tutorial on dubwise reggae riddims? Like alpha steppas, etc? I can't find anything...bass heavy sounds galore...like Fkir Amlak
I like your videos. I'm coming full circle. I'm learning the process of the very style of production that made me hate the "new school" of hip hop. I liked turntable scratching and master mixes then they started sampling and the records sounded like they were drowning in the kind of soul music you'd find in a Sear's bargain bin. It's not MOBB Deep's fault I thought they sucked when they came out and wouldn't buy their stuff. But later, I got into DJ Screw and still like the chopped and screwed vibe - go figure.
I kinda struggle with boom bap beats because, more often than not, I would struggle with loops and just how to make them sound better. I also struggle with drum selection. Yeah. By the way, would you do a video on Knxwledge's production style. I notice some of his tracks use an 808 snare rather than a regular acoustic snare. Even in the more oldschool tracks, I would notice that.
