He didn't exactly quit the band. He had to have hip replacement surgery because he had injured his hip while hiking in Hawaii getting ready for the "Trial by Fire Tour" in "97" He wanted and asked the group to postpone the tour until he recovered from his hip replacement surgery. Neal Schon "supposedly" talked the band into seeking out a "sound alike" Steve Perry to go forth with the Tour! I thought that was a pretty crappy thing to do (if it's true)! They could have waited like Def Leopard did for their drummer! They still had to wait for Steve Augeri (the new lead singer to learn not just the new songs but the whole Journey catalog up to that point!) So, why couldn't they wait for Steve Perry to recover? I LOVE Journey and LOVE Steve Perry! The whole situation upsets me because I am such a HUGE FAN! Of course I may have the wrong info according to all the Stones magazines, Hollywood gossip, hear say, etc...etc... I do however respect the fact that Arnel Pineda (the new lead singer of Journey) HIGHLY RESPECTS Steve Perry.
I still get goosebumps listening to The Voice! And this song is my very favorite from Journey. They may be singing about the SF bay (originally it was about LA, but they changed it), but "the bay" I think about is the Monterey Bay. I'm from Santa Cruz, and am super homesick!

I met a guy from San Jose while visiting my grandparents. All he talked about was Journey. He'd been seeing them at Fairs. This was before this album came out. He'd say "You gotta hear Steve Perry." He'd write every letter about Steve Perry. Finally the album "Infinity" came out he bugged me to buy it immediately. It blew me away.. I've been a huge fan ever since.

You need to react to his solo hit...it's called You better wait! You will love it! He also within the last year came back with a new solo album...at 70 years old! So refreshing to see young people enjoying Journey!! I saw them live at the fabulous LA Colosseum (twice!) with Loverboy as their opening act, Steve Perry live is a religious experience.
