  • In this video, I’m rectifying a gearbox leak. It’s probably something that I’ve caused myself when we replaced the engine. I likely pinched the seal while installing the drive shafts. It appears that its only leaking from the passenger side, so I’m only going to be changing one seal today. On top of that and while I’m in that area, I thought it prudent to change the drop links too. They’re old and crusty by now and ready for failure, so I might as well.
    To change the drive shaft seals, you’ll need to undo the track rod end and the lower wishbone ball joint from the wheel hub. That gives you access to be able to remove the driveshaft from the gearbox. Once that’s out, use whatever tools you’ve got to remove the old seal. Using grease as a lubricant, install the new seal and tap it home evenly around the circumference, then grease the drive shaft before re-installing. While the wheel hub was dismantled, I removed the old anti-roll bar drop links and fitted the new ones.

    I’ve still got a pair of drive shafts waiting to go on my Shitroen. I should really get round to it, but I prefer wasting time and money on dumb modifications 😅

      I’m not sure what generation if Civic they came from, you’d have to speak to Jelly Snake Motorsport on Instagram to determine the full details.

    I could not for the life of me get the driveshaft out. It felt absolutely and utterly stuck inside the gearbox.
    Ended up making the leak significantly worse and taken it to a garage. £80 + seals and oil. Not to bad, but would have preferred doing it myself.
    Any tips if there is a next time?

      Did you try to remove the seal around the drive shaft to loosen it up?

  • @departe5672

    Can you also take the drive shaft out from the gearbox side if you don't manage to get the big nut out from the other side of the Shaft?I a trying to get mine unscrewed but is not willing to get unscrew.. tried big bar, someone jumping on the bar, tried Parkside 400 N*m impact gun, nothing...is just not moving..I have taken the end rod out and drop link and the other one...

      I would imagine you can, but be prepared to catch the gearbox oil as it drops out and to be prepared to refill the gearbox oil when the job is done.

    • @departe5672
      @departe5672 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, already drained from the gearbox,I just don't know why I am not able to unscrew that big nut that's holding the outside part of the Shaft...I was thinking maybe if I use a heat tourch ,but I will damage the bearings in it?Also if I can get that out I can inspect the bearings and maybe replace them...if I have damaged them?...hmmm

      @departe5672 did you undo the fastening tab on the drive shaft nut?

      @DABDIY  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @departe5672 fair enough. I didn’t want to insult your intelligence, but I’ve seen people not realise that it’s held in by a locking tab before, I had to check.
