      This is so different than the way other people have explained sales engineer. Careerist and course careers make this career path seem so easy. I was looking to switch to this career path and although I'm a outgoing person and extroverted this seems like a lot more than I was told. Thanks for the info

    I am also a tech sales guy.
    From my experience, I think key things are to understand your solution, clients view and industry. Those are foundamental to be a pro in tech sales. Additionally, a sharp mind to make a customized solution which balance client requirements and quotation meanwhile beat ur competitors badly on the ground.
    Lastly, the sounded skill on presentation including preparing a convincing document and brainwashing audience with your highlights and glamour.
    Anyway, comprehensive knowledge, competition belief and presentation skills are keys to be a pro in tech sales.

    • @KyleMilan
      @KyleMilan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Christopher - Thanks for the comment! The only think I would disagree with is the "brainwashing your audience with your highlights and glamour", I think people focus on that too much.
      Highlighting accomplishments is one thing, but I always recommend to do in context of the conversation.

    Eng Kyle , this video had shown up at the right perfect moment
    im a freshly Rnewable Energy Engineering graduate and i always been told from every one you are a very sales man and every girl i hahve been with told me that im the best salesman they could meet and i myself worked as a salesman but in not the engineering field and i have been told the same ..and i didnt work as an engineer yet so i beleive that this is my passing being a Technical sales engineer so any advice despite i dont have that much of a technical background but like i said sales is in my blood ..thanks dude

    • @KyleMilan

      Khaled - That's great that you're a natural. Do you have a high technical aptitude? Do you enjoy talking about technical things? There are 1K's of sales jobs you can get outside of Technical Sales, but if you know you want to be in a technical role then focus on an industry that you have a passion for and start to learn the technical side.
      I don't have an engineering degree and was able to make a significant career out of technical sales...I hope that gives you hope!

    I appreciated the many ideas you shared in this video...you gave me a lot to think about and chew on. But I have to say that many of things you described sales engineers having to do, and the way that sales engineers have to be, gave the profession a real slimy feel. Having worked with endless, countless salesmen and sales engineers over the last 25 years I can tell you that the guy who cold calls me almost NEVER gets an audience with me, and the guy who "follows up" with me 8 or 10 times instead of taking the hint after 2 or 3 follow-ups is on my crap list. Many (maybe all) of the skills you described are surely going to contribute to a person's success as a sales engineer, but many of the things you said they should be willing to do, I would NEVER want to do...not because I'm not willing to or able to, but because I would never want to be viewed or thought of in that sleazy used car salesmen way. Just my two cents coming from the other side of the sales engineer perspective....25 years of being the customer.

    • @KyleMilan
      @KyleMilan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Steve - I appreciate the feedback and comment brother! And I 100% agree that there are a lot of people that have your mindset, while there are also a lot of people that need the consistent follow up.
      From a sales perspective, you don't know what the person prefers so you have to error on the side of still trying to follow up with them.
      Even though you along with probably 50% of the "other people" don't like cold calls...again, we have to always try and see who picks up.
      I appreciate the comment!
      I think most people would view your "preference" as one buyers perspective, it most likely is about 25% - 35% of what "buyers" would prefer as well...I just teach people to go after the majority and never give up until someone says "no thanks".
      There is no "getting hints", you need to wait for them to confirm they aren't interested because;
      - Maybe they are annoyed
      - Maybe they forgot to contact you back
      - Maybe they never received your message
      - Maybe they already responded but it never left their outbox
      Too many "maybes", always go with the stance that you don't know anything unless they tell you something.
      I appreciate it!
      KM

    I have tried applying for sales jobs before. I noticed they always have this catch phase, "You can make up to X amount" and it's always a decent salary listed to draw people in. You go to the interview and it's either commission only so you aren't even guaranteed a paycheck or the hourly rate is so low you couldn't possibly live on it, support a family, or buy a house. Commission is icing on the cake and you can't rely on it because it is never consistent. If you have no cake (decent guaranteed salary) then the icing (commission is worthless).
    I have had interviews where my hourly rate would be 12 an hour and you can't live on that. They say if you meet your weekly goals, your monthly goals, and the office as a whole meets their goals too then you can make the living wage (60k to 100k) is usually the amount they say. They always focus on goals and commission and frown upon you asking too many question about the hourly rate. The amount you have to sell to make the decent livable wage is so hard to get to that in many cases it's unobtainable. I almost laughed when the interviewer told me I could make up to 80k if the office as a whole meets it's goal. That means my pay is based on what someone else does too so if they do bad I suffer. That is insane!!
    What I would expect from any sales position is 60k to 70k guaranteed salary with bonuses based on how much I sell. That way the base salary is a good foundation since the commission can't be relied upon. The Commission is just extra if I do good on top of my base pay. This is why I gave up on applying for sales jobs because they are mostly scams where you stay poor and others get rich off your hard work. So, I went to college, got some IT Certs, and now I have a great salary, with benefits, medial, sick pay, vacation. Most importantly, it is guaranteed income every week that only ever goes up when I get a raise or my yearly Xmas bonus.

    • @KyleMilan
      @KyleMilan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment. I would personally never take a commission only tech sales jobs and agree that most of those are scams. HOWEVER, there are a lot of great opportunities that start you off with a salary in the first year 60K-70K and then reduce salary in the 2nd year because high commission takes over. I'm comfortable with that.

      I think that anything in engineering will give you a good foundational technical knowledge, but be sure to figure out which industry you want to go into...that's much more important than if you're a EE, ME, IE, SE, etc.

    • @KyleMilan
      @KyleMilan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kevin Anthony - I’ve had 8 SAAS clients in the past 16 months, this rule still applies to SAAS as well.
      When I say 80% people, I’m referring to the sales process with people...not only “talking skills”. Sales skills without a high amount of technical knowledge will still close more deals then people with a heavier technical knowledge skill set.

    Hello. I’m a rising senior industrial engineer and I’m looking to get into technical sales (software sales more specifically) when I graduate. I had an internship set up in technical sales for the summer but due to COVID my offer was rescinded. I would have no experience at all coming in if I tried to get a job in that field upon graduation now. What provable skills can I bring to the table to make sure I get the highest possible starting base salary for someone in my position?

    • @KyleMilan
      @KyleMilan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jassiem - I'm sorry to hear about the internship being canceled. Your best bet is to try and get some type of entry level position and work it for a couple of years. Once you have some experience and proven sales results, you can start to carve your own path.

    45-65K?? I was being enticed into the SE world as an Engineer with the understanding that SE's make in excess of 100k / year. It also looks like (according to Google) the average salary for an SE is around 75-90k where some companies (Splunk being one) pays over 100K. How realistic is that 45-65 figure?

    • @KyleMilan
      @KyleMilan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Karsen - It all depends on experience and the company size. There are plenty of smaller industrial companies that are paying in the 45K - 65K range when someone has ZERO sales experience. There are also companies that will start someone in the 65K - 80K range with ZERO experience.
      They key word you used is "average" salary for an SE, there are highs and lows. I would agree that as an overall average it can be 75K - 90K. BUT, as I said in my video...a 22-24 year old fresh out of school with an engineering degree WILL NOT usually make the "average" of 75K - 90K as their first sales job.
      If you have industry experience, that can definitely increase the starting base pay.
      Yes, I know plenty of SE's that make $150K - $350K per year, but that includes commission.
      I hope that answers your question, if not then let me know!!
      Thanks for the comment!

      Josiah - Thanks for the question. You have to find an industry and then get any job in sales or sales support role. If you can't do that, get any job and try and move into the sales department when there's opportunities.

      Do you have technical knowledge personally in some field or industry? Is there some industry that you're passionate about? There are people out there that don't rely too heavy on tech experience, but are looking for solid sales people with a proven track record.
      If you have a higher technical aptitude then you can learn the specific tech stuff easily, just focus on your sales experience/performance.
      Keep looking for that company that's willing to look past it, they are out there.
      You should also look into my Technical Sales University here: training.technicalsalesu.com/enroll

    • @KyleMilan

      Ruthie - That's a common path but not always necessary. You just have to find a company that's willing to take a chance on you, prove to them that you can sell their technical product or service and they should consider it.
      Sales experience is more important than technical knowledge, as long as you can understand technical things and adapt that's all that matters.

    Hey Kyle, great video! Super helpful in my search for a tech sales job. I am 0% engineering and all around great sales person. I’m also 20yrs old and have a strong track record for at&t. I was a top 5 seller in the nation in our account manager position outside of retail recently and consistently have been a top seller in my region/market in my two years here. I am in talks with people in the tech industry and recruiters for companies like Cisco. My current tc is $120k, what do you think are my chances of notching above $70k salary per year being this young & no degree but consistent top seller w/ references? Thanks!!!

      @KyleMilan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure about your specific area in India, but typically yes that would be a good industry to start with. If you have security guards at locations then you'll have to make appointments ahead of time. Or maybe try and say that you're dropping something off for "Example Name", you'll need to know who the person is before visiting.

    • @KyleMilan
      @KyleMilan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Billy Joe - If you have a strong technical aptitude then pick a field of study and you’ll pick it up quick...just try and focus on getting sales jobs while in school/summer at companies treat are in the industry so you can gain some working experience.
      Even if it’s a “help with data entry” or “inbound sales calls”...if it’s in the department it will give you a much better chance of going straight into sales when you graduate.
      If school isn’t your thing, then try and get a job right out of high school in the industry you want....then work your way up to sales.
      The sky is the limit brother 👊🔥

    • @KyleMilan
      @KyleMilan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kevin - Most people look at sales as the “soft skill”, but after 15 years and 1,000’s of companies I would say the opposite. All companies have technical departments that projects get handed off to or get pulled into the quoting process.
      It’s good to be able to answer A Lot of the technical questions, but you don’t have to know it all.

    • @KyleMilan

      Sorry for the disappointment Winston. Personality is one aspect of the machine. Sales IS a skill anyone can "TRY"...but to be great you have to be able to handle things over the long haul which is where certain personality traits pay off.
      That doesn't mean that you can't develop those traits, it will just take you a little longer.
      If you job is to deal with people and some rejection all day...but you don't like talking to people, why would you want to do sales?
