I heard the movie is a mixed bag at best and the daughter storyline is the major problem!

  • @TwistedSMF

I agree with the Daughter issue some of the comments are saying. My only problem was that it was just thrown into the story. You have to guess who the Mother was. That was my only issue, really. It was hard to relate/care about that story cause you know nothing about it. Rosewood was barely even in it. But overall, it was pretty good. I thought it was great, and seeing everyone in the franchise again was lovely. Anyone else tho, Did you get the feeling the Daughter was a tease for a spin-off?

No feeling for a spinoff, but the daughter storyline was completely thrown in.

Hey Dave and the McRazies! To elaborate on my super chat, Beverly Hills Cop contributed just as much to my childhood as Halloween, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Terminator, Back to the Future, and countless other movie franchises. I idolized Axel Foley. He has the instincts and deductive reasoning skills that rival those of Sherlock Holmes, but his flaw is that he is impulsive and emotional. He's controlled by his passions, which leaves him out of control of himself. In a way, he is his own worst enemy. He has many tools, but he insists on using a hammer to solve most of his problems. But because he "fractured an occasional law or two" in his past, he understands the criminal mind. He can see through the sophisticated, high-society exterior of people like Viktor Maitland. He notices details that allow him to stop crimes before they even happen, such as in the club. His tactics are usually psychological. He pokes, prods, and pushes through the masks of normalcy worn by many criminals until they're forced to expose their true selves. He is chameleon-like in his ability to impersonate different characters so as to draw out the true nature of the criminals he hunts. More "professional" officers, such as Taggert and Rosewood represent the system, which Joe Don Baker's character in Cape Fear points out, can be "slow, skeptical...pathetic even" when it comes to enforcing laws and punishing criminals. The procedural safeguards police officers are forced to observe hinder law enforcement in many ways, and to some extent protect criminals. I prefer to see such safeguards as protections afforded to the innocent, should they ever be falsely accused. Nonetheless, Axel has to become more subtle in his approach, as by attempting to fight the dragon head on, he not only endangers himself, but innocent people, like his friend, Jen (Lisa Eilbacher). Taggert and Rosewood, on the other hand, need to be more like Axel, not ignoring procedure, but becoming more emotionally invested in their work, rather than merely going about their duties lackadaisically. They must do more than simply "be on the job with their guns and badges" as Axel points out. I think Bogermill represents the perfect harmony of the two. He operates "by the book," but still, I think, intensely sympathizes with Axel. In some ways, I think Bogermill sees a younger version of himself in Axel. The only real problem with the original movie is that Axel himself doesn't change much. He grows more as a character by the second movie, since, at the very least, he has authorization to go undercover by then, and he's drawn to Beverly Hills because of his respect for Bogermill. He helps solve the Alphabet crimes at least in part to pay his debt to Bogermill. But Taggert and Rosewood grow as characters in the first movie, since by the end they are both more like Axel. Anyway, I LOVE the first two Beverly Hills Cop movies. Axel Foley is right up there with Dr. Loomis as one of my all-time favorite characters. 🤩

Thanks, Dave, for the big laughs I got out of watching this episode of McRae Live. Especially the end when you went on a rant about King Kong wearing the Infinity Gauntlet and then riding Godzilla like a horse! Oh, my God, that was so hilarious 😄😄😄!!! I'm a huge Beverly Hills Cop fan myself, Dave.
I was born in '79 just like you. I turn 45 in two weeks. I saw Beverly Hills Cop on VHS with my parents back then. I wouldn't see part 2 until the early-'90s.
I did see the beginning to part 2 at my friend's house though in 1988 and I was enthralled by it. But then my Mom called me home for lunch so I didn't get to see the rest of it. My friend's parents had HBO back then and that was the only channel you could watch Beverly Hills Cop part 2 on because it had just come out the year before. I love part 2 just as much as the first one.
Beverly Hills Cop part 3 is a whole different story. To me, that one's not even an action film. It's got more of a made for TV vibe to it. The only reason why that movie went to theaters and not straight to TV is because of Eddie Murphy.
He's the only star they have in it. Beverly Hills Cop part 3 is a dumpster fire 🔥!!! No ifs, ands, or buts about it 🙂. Eddie Murphy doesn't even like it.
That's pretty bad when the star of the franchise doesn't even like one of the movies he's made. I read an interview with Eddie Murphy recently where he was asked about Beverly Hills Cop part 3. He basically states that the only reason why he made the third one is just for the paycheck. He never really wanted to make a Beverly Hills Cop part 3.
And after seeing it, I can tell why he didn't want to make a third one. That movie is the reason why it took 30 years to make Axel F. And they've basically been working on this script since the early-2000s. First it was a movie, then a TV show, then a movie again.
Originally, Paramount was supposed to release it. Then they decided to opt of it and sold it to Netflix. Netflix does get a sequel out of this, Dave. I read that just a few days ago in an interview with Eddie Murphy from The Hollywood Reporter.
He said that they're in the early stages of pre-production on Beverly Hills Cop part 5. So there is going to be a sequel. But that's all Netflix has the option for is one sequel and then the franchise goes back to Paramount. I am definitely going to see Axel F., Dave.
I just don't know if I'm gonna see it on Netflix or wait for a physical release. Netflix is just so expensive. That's why I said that I'll probably wait for the physical release. Oh, yeah, Dave, one last thing about Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.
You said that you didn't know why it was called Axel F.? Well, there's a reason for it beyond it just being the 4th sequel in the series. I read in an interview with Joseph Gordon-Levitt last year in The Hollywood Reporter, shortly after it came out that he was gonna be working on Beverly Hills Cop part 4 (before it was revealed that it was just going to be Axel F.), that, according to him, they were just going to call the movie Beverly Hills Cop part 4: Axel and that the next movie is supposed to have a different character's name on it. Could even be his character's name on it maybe?
At least that's what I feel he's implying anyways. Hopefully that gives you some understanding as to why they went and just named the movie Axel F., Dave. Apparently, according to Joseph Gordon-Levitt, there is a bigger picture in play as far as the titles go.
    Cheers, Dave 🎃🍻

Here's another interesting comparison. Beverly Hills Cop III, to me, is the "H20" of the franchise, whereas Axel F. is the "Halloween 2018' of the franchise. Does that make sense? 🤔

I thought Axel F. was pretty great! Not quite as good as the first two movies, but a MAJOR step up from the third, much closer in tone to the original series. It also did more than merely play the hits. Axel feels like himself again, he grew somewhat as a character, and the movie wisely utilized the legacy characters and told a new story without over saturating the movie with fan service. It introduced new characters with their own compelling character arcs and leaves open the possibility of telling new stories if the series wishes to continue. I give the movie a solid 4/5. 🤩

I didn't expect it to be on the level of 1 & 2 different times, they just on another level back then. I wasn't
All i wanted was to 1 be better than part 3. 1 just be good enough.
It did. i thought it murdered part 3 100x over
Not only was it good enough. It was good enough and then some. Better than i was expecting it to be. The trailer didn't do it justice.
Its not great but i was man.. this movie only keeps getting better. Its not bad, its good. It ain't touching the first two like i expected. But its good. Better than i eas expecting. I was expecting eh.. its ok & it started out that way. I was like yeeeah this is gonna be ok.. but like 35 minutes in in like ya know... This can be good. And yeah like i said i just kept enjoying it more and more pretty much up to the end.
Now it is a bit too long. I reached a point where i was like ok this has been good all things considered but lets wrap this up.
Um. Oh i think part 4 feels a hell of a lot more like a Beverly Hills Cop movie then 3 not quite on the level of the 2 two but compared to part 3 oh big improvement. Same think with Axel himself. I did feel like i was watch Eddie than Axel if that makes sense? I don't feel like I'm watching Eddie in the first two i just see Axel. But part 3? Forget about it. He didn't feel like Foley at all. But in Part 4? Yeah a lot better.
So yeah all things considered. Part 4. Good job. Not too bad i enjoyed it. I could it again
As far as im concerned. This is my part 3. Ill watch part 1, 2 then F. That it. Thats gonna be my Beverly Hills trilogy. So actually.. im glad they didn't call it Beverly Hills cop 4 cause now it makes it that much more easy for me to pretend this is the true part 3. Ya know? Its not gonna be part 1 Part 2 then Part 4 when i watch it.
I give it like 7.5 solid all things considered.
As good as this cam be a even then some a bit. I'd say its one of the better legacy Sequels. Kills the latest Indiana Jones for me.
Kills The Dumb and Dumber To
Honestly.... I think its even better than Halloween 2018 least i have fun with this. And laughed with Halloween 2018 i want scared a bit, no suspense. And to be there was just this... Balh energy for the whole movie. I wasn't a fan. Ill put Beverly Hills Cop F above it even Halloween 2018
So yeah its a solid Legacy Sequel

They should have done things like axel trying his voices and trying to con people but nobody is falling for it these days 😂 there was once that happened and i thought that's cool but then he barely did it again in the film. He even went to a hotel and was about to do it and gave up 😂 that's kind of how i felt watching it. And they also should have showed what Beverly hills has become in 2024. Two big missed opportunities. I liked the shooter mcgavin cameo but i genuinely did not like the movie.

Yet another daughter who hates daddy subplot plot from modern Hollywood. Ugh. Not surprising they kept the daughter out of much of the promotion. Felt like INDY 5 at times, which is not a positive.
Some of the film was quite good though, the opening title sequence, snow plough scene, shootout moments from Billy and Taggart, the truck chase, decent street shootout and chopper sequence. It was good to see Reiser again too, and Eddie was good when he was working with the right dialogue and writing, but a lot of the humor didn't quite land. Bacon was fine until near the end when he went a little too campy IMO. Some annoying casting choices for some of the smaller characters here too. Even the amazing soundtrack wasn't used that well.
Also, what's with this awful style of camera work where the camera has to be constantly slowly pushing in on the actors and surroundings during every damn shot? Makes it feel like a generic Netflix production when they do this nonstop. Keep the camera still for once.
This was not a horrible film, and it did have some good moments (Appreciated the mostly practical FX!), but overall it's a 2/4 stars film for me, and at times kind of boring. Modern style will never match styles from the past, the daughter hates father crap was tiring after five minutes, making it feel like a melodrama and out of place in a BHC film, weak villain, script needed another polish, and Eddie needed a better counterpart. Also, why have the finale set at a mansion again? How about a new location like 2, and even 3 had. The marketing team deserves a huge raise though, as they made the film look much better than it was.

Well said! Yeah, it was only middle of the road for me. In some parts, Murphy made that "Norbit-Nutty Professor face" that I never found funny. And he and Taggart looked to have more makeup on than I have ever worn!

The film was pretty disappointing tbh dave. The jokes didnt land. This wasnt the axel foley I know and love. The plot was barely a thing. Kevin bacon was a terrible villain compared to the likes of maxwell dent or victor Maitland. And his daughter jeez she ruined this movie. There was some good action set pieces with the helicopter but they really shouldn't have bothered with this film. And its obvious Eddie murphy is overweight and he cant even run anymore 😂. How this film is getting good reviews from the likes of Cody leach and others is baffling to me.

@@DaveMcRaeOfficial so I watched it again Dave. And I was too harsh on my original analysis of the film. It's a decent bhc movie. I enjoyed it a lot more this time. I actually think my love of the original trilogy hindered my viewing experience first time around. It's 2024 I was foolish to think that exact axel Foley and charm of those movies would what we would be getting. I still have issues with the film I think they replaced a lot of what's great about bhc with nostalgia. And I think the daughter kills a lot of the momentum and holds axel back from being his true self. Just have axel go back to Beverly hills to help his old mate Billy who is in trouble. We could have had a lot more of them and taggart together the daughter storyline just holds the film back from it's true potential. Apart from that I did enjoy it and I will watch it again it has good rewatch value. I don't know if I like it more than the 3rd Al need to watch that again it's been a few years. But I would be happy to see a bhc 5. Hopefully without the daughter...she has moved to Alaska.
