    OK, in the last two videos we talked about the difference between an anxiety attack and a panic attack, and how you can get stuck in a cycle of having panic attacks. In this video we’ll talk about how to stop panic attacks. It’s a bit paradoxical, but it works.
    In the previous video we talked about the panic attack cycle. 1- a sensation or feeling, 2- you judge that feeling to be unacceptable, bad or dangerous, 3- this triggers an escalating FFF response, and 4- your brain learns that panic and anxiety are “dangerous”.
    So let’s take a deeper look at step 2, the thoughts that transform a physical sensation into something we see as dangerous. Here are common ways of thinking that trigger panic attacks.
    The Big issue is believing that panic attacks are dangerous.
    Panic attacks are inconvenient, they are uncomfortable, they can be embarrassing or they can interfere with what you want to be doing- but they aren’t physically dangerous.
    All these uncomfortable symptoms are just the body tossing you into FFF mode, which makes it less likely that you’ll pass out, stop breathing or any of those other fears. If someone is having a panic attack and they go to the ER, an EKG will show a regular, but rapid heartbeat. You pass out with low blood pressure, a panic attack takes your blood pressure up. Heart attacks feel worse when you walk around, move about, panic attacks feel better.

    Does anyone else's panic attacks literally feel like they are going crazy and feel like you'll never get out of it?

    • @e_i_e_i_bro
      @e_i_e_i_bro 2 ปีที่แล้ว +82

      For whatever reason (possibly because my father is schizophrenic) I have intense fear that I'm going to hallucinate and go fully crazy during panic attacks. I've heard this thought is common. It does feel you're going crazy because it can feel like an altered state + physical symptoms. I get blurry vision like I'm in a dream and dizzy. Feels crazy for sure. Just know that panic attacks cannot cause you to be psychotic. That is a whole different disorder. these sensations are due to an overactive nervous system, not brain abnormalities that cause psychosis.

      @TherapyinaNutshell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +192

      I think that a lot of people do feel that way. one thing that may help is to label those as "thoughts" not feelings. ie "I'm having the thought that I'll never get out of this" "I'm having the thought that I'm going crazy" just because you think something doesn't mean it's true. Just because you feel a certain way, doesn't mean it's true.

    This CD has three separate relaxation/meditation sessions on it th-cam.com/users/postUgkxzpa8CIfZcihW4Z0F_ja0QF3W9KIatrsq guided by a very pleasant and direct male voice. Unlike so many other products of its type, this CD does not have bad synthesizer music, does not feature a phony or affected style of narration, and does not make any bogus claims to be subliminal or to re-train the brain or any of that balderdash. What you get is 1. a guided meditation for getting into a pleasantly relaxed state of body awareness while taking a stroll (superb for those easing back into a fitness routine slowly after an illness or injury) 2. A nice long breath-awareness relaxation session that if followed diligently can put you into very deep states of full-body relaxation and mental calmness, and 3. a buddhist-inspired meditation session designed to help you develop and maintain feelings of loving kindness toward not just yourself and your friends, but toward people you don't even like. The CD makes no claims to be designed for advanced meditators or for buddhists or hindus/yoga practitioners looking for very deep and esoteric stuff. It is geared more toward the average person who just wants to develop the habit of relaxation and stress relief through natural, healthy means. him, if you happen to be reading this, keep up the good work fella, and I love your accent. I would also like to note that I have never fallen asleep while listening to this product. I would like to kindly suggest to the reviewer who said this CD makes him fall asleep, that he might want to get checked to see if he has a sleep disorder, or if he is simply not setting aside ample time for restful sleep at night. A healthy person getting adequate rest at night should be able to go into deep states of mental relaxation without dozing off, if not all the time, then most of the time.

      I swear this is what I was thinking right before reading your comment. “Wow, so many people are struggling with the same feelings I’m having. There ARE, people who know what I feel and would understand me.” I feel so alone, no one I know really knows what it’s like to feel panic almost 24/7. It started happening after a concussion and that was three years ago. Started getting better then I got covid. I do even remember who I was before. My whole life is based and worked around how I feel. I want my life back. But the worst part is people in your life thinking your full of it. The isolation and not having someone understand you at all is so heartbreaking. I hope others have found some comfort in these comments too. Sometimes knowing you’re not alone and just really being seen, makes a big difference. ❤

      I’m so glad you found this channel. I had panic attacks for a while back in the 90’s. I had a therapist who told me (when I felt it coming on during our session) to lie down on the floor and just let it come over me. That it was absolutely harmless physically and that by calling it’s bluff in a safe environment with a loving witness it would go away and not come back. He was right. Until this past month. My father died in my arms and while I thought I was strong enough to be there with him when he passed, it traumatized me in a profound way. Searching this new modality for help - lo and behold I find this charming therapist who has the same advice for me today that I received so many years ago. Thankful for the reminder and the memories of how well it worked. This will pass for all of us. This panic and anxiety does not have to be permanent in our existence and it does not have to define us! Peace to all who read this.

But for me that’s my triggers is health and feelings sensations ughhhhhhh 😢 and yes they kept coming on and I’m like I just got done feeling this ugh mine were triggered also by a thx gummy 8 hr Er visit twice once for actually trying weed and I got super bad so bad I could y breathe and I was so out of breath like and the. Once with a strong antibiotic I had this happens that one was also a 911 call and took 25-30 mins to come down but this time it wasn’t a er stay i was just back to myself where with the gummy and weed experiences that was paranoia and freaked out straight for 8-9 hrs in ER!! I can’t be near this stuff ever again!!!! Idky this is but my brain can’t handle it I get super scared and sickly nothing can stop it either but when I pray to God I know He’s helping me! and maybe allowed me to experience this to trust in HIM. But lessons learned I still have panic this eeek since this antibiotic was so awful to me ughhhh im on a different one now and this one is making me feel depressed and suicidal like and that’s not me at all. ! Praise Jesus heaven in the next home Amen no more pain

I had occasional panic attacks in that time but now it has become chronic and very intense. This week, I had them constantly and I’ve never felt that sick of them. It’s been rough and draining. Let me tell you guys, it worked!! I struggled with anxiety and panic attacks and they basically have taken over my life. For example my triggers were going to shops or taking a bus alone. Basically all public places because I was afraid of what if i get panic attack in public and nobody is gonna help my and i’m gonna pass out. So it was this never ending cycle of anxiety over anxiety. And today i took a bus home and started to feel super anxious and then i remembered this video and tried these hacks she talked about. And then it clicked inside me and i was in control over panic/anxiety. So i HIGHLY recommend this video to everyone! You are not alone and you’ll be fine only if you fight for it! Thank you Emma!

    Since last week's video, every time I've felt my anxiety or panic start to take off I've said to myself "Oh, it's just that anxiety/panic, no need to freak out, just gonna ride the wave and be ok", and I'd continue doing whatever I was doing at the time- eg- I tend to struggle getting a deep breath and then I start to REALLY feel panicked, but the last time it happened I remembered what you said last week and I stopped "fighting" for that deep breath and just breathed normally while thinking "Meh, it's just panic, no biggy, I'll be fine" (and I intention took smaller breaths)...this helped, not every time, but...baby steps. 😁

      I’ve had anxiety for all my life but didn’t know what it was until about 6 years ago. The last few months it’s gotten worse and worse and I had to change medications. In the last two weeks I’ve barely left my house, haven’t worked and am constantly on edge. I found the anxious truth podcast on Spotify and I’ve already made progress. I left my house today for a few mins and was relatively okay, and working out hasn’t been as hard. I still get shaky and have that feeling I can’t get a full breath but its much better overall. I also started feeling like I wasn’t in control of my body like i was watching myself do things rather than doing them. With that podcast and now these videos I’ve found tonight I actually have hope again.

Do mindfulness meditations, every few weeks I will do several different meditations in a row so that I do it for a total of 3 hrs or so. It really brings peace back to the body and helps stabilize

      @@kellyemberson339 My anxiety loop lasted 13 days - I lost 5 kgs in a week, slept 4 hours in 5 days, vomiting everything i ate. I went to this doctor again and he told me to pray, that my anxiety would go away. I decided to go to the hospital and I was then injected with valium, which helped me to finally get a moment of sleep (I remember waking up on my bed, i have no idea how I got home but I FINALLY could think by myself, my mind was quiet).
      Looking back now, I am able to recognise that that was the lowest I've ever been emotionally. A week later I went to see a therapist (it lasted 3 months, god it's expensive!), the short time i got with the therapist was enough for me to see that my biggest issue was pushing my feelings away. I refused to talk with myself, to think and to feel, I treated my conscience as my enemy. Now I am able to admit things to myself, to ask questions: "what worries me about this thing?", "what am i afraid of?".
      In the beginning - meditation and taking walks.

It's way too intense, I can't handle it, I should've just skipped that class today! What do I do now? Should I leave the classroom? But I just can't! It's so embarrassing!" and it just got way, way worse. It was so overwhelming and intense. But then I just looked down on the desk, stopped thinking of the ways I can immediately reduce my anxiety, just completely "surrendered" to it, and then it was just gone. I looked up and I didn't feel anxious anymore. At all. The intensity of anxiety just dropped completely. It's mind-blowing how this works.

    Thank you so much for these 3 videos on panic attacks; I have struggled with panic attacks on the highway for two years now, and after watching these videos, today while driving I stopped trying to fight the fear but instead accepted it and kept telling myself: "it's mega uncomfortable, but I can still drive" and that helped enormously.....thank you, truly, from the bottom of my heart.

    I’m a caricature artist and I remember a few years ago when my anxiety was at it’s worst and I had difficulties walking with my dog through nature without touching trees for example, I started exaggerating that, imagining myself crawling over that beautiful path where I walked. That helped. 😄 As a caricature artist I’m very good at exaggerating, but I’ll use that skill the right way from now on, just like I did back then. Not the catastrophising. 😉
    Love from The Netherlands. ❤️

    This is so helpful! I am pretty young, and I never wanted to tell people about how sometimes I have panic attacks or anxiety attacks, because I was never sure. I didn’t want to “bother” anyone, especially if I was lying to myself about my mental state. Even though now I realize I do have panic attacks, and that I have anxiety, I can hopefully decrease them, or feel better in the moment. 💗💗🥰

    Great video. I indeed noticed that trying to trick your panic attack to go away only feeds it. I used to carry paper towels in my backpack to wipe my sweat. This only made me sweat even more. I was so embarrassed. The day I showed a coworker how stressed and sweaty I was, we laughed it off. It started to get better

  • @junesketches
    @junesketches 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I legit cried during part2 and relived a moment of my life where everything was just going wrong for me. And then also reminded me of the particular day when I just cried and let myself cry after years of struggling with my depression (and also not knowing it was depression while having all sorts of people telling me it's all in my head). After that, there was a change, a shift in my mindset in how I wanted to approach myself and others. And I think it's just as you said. I let myself feel my feelings and that I stopped running from the thing that was keeping me tied down. I still have anxiety attacks especially due to covid and having the lockdown (I get bad social anxieties so it's made it worse) but I have a better relationship with myself now that I at least don't have panic attacks that would send my heart racing. Also, I have methods to help myself with. This is just an added understanding for me. Thank you!

    thank you, you’re right. At night when laying down I’ll sometimes feel my heartbeat and think “oh no” I’m 54 and having a heart attack. Then I would start getting anxious worried and paralyzed with fear. Ive spent many visits over the years in the ER, only to have them tell me my heart is fine. Recently I noticed that deep breathing didn’t help but increased the heart rate. Last night I thought I might have to go to the ER, so I went to take a shower first, after the shower I felt better. Today while reading a book, I started feeling the attack coming on, I thought of the shower event and put the book down and started sweeping the floor and went on the stepper for five minutes. Movement helped me move past the attack. You are right, trying to stop or control the attack leads to an increased level and duration of attack.

    Great advice. Last night I had a number of panic attacks. Evening started GREAT - lots of fun and laughs with our kids and our dog, Then I took a hot bath and my heart rate became so fast and even faster the more I thought about it. Even though this was not my first panic attack I "forgot" that the best thing to avoid the panic attacks is to ignore them. Fear of the fear and checking and rechecking if everything is "safe and sure" is the worst cure, Ignore it.... Come what may. The less attention you give it the better. By ignoring them I was able to almost totally get rid of them for many years.

    I think the key thing I did to overcome anxiety/panic was learning to live in the moment. i ruminated and worried too much, so I was always near the edge of a breakdown over SOMEthing, usually something from the past or the future, something either immutable or uncertain. Living the moment allowed me to stop this silly cycle.
    Changing my diet certainly helped (I think I'm sensitive to preservatives and MSG and such, not uncommon), and so did meditation. Can't discount the positive affects of active neuroplasticity!
    I love this channel. It is THE BEST psych channel I've found. I posit that this channel is better than an actual therapist. I know I've tried quite a few therapists over the years, but THIS channel tells you what a good doctor should (but in my experience, doesn't).
    Keep up the GREAT work!

    Excellent information! I think a lot of therapists don't realize this differentiation in approach of generalized anxiety vs panic disorder. Also, when we just try to work with symptoms, and don't dive into the deeper work, and conversely-when we dive into the work but don't teach coping skills to give immediate relief, we do our clients a grave diservice. Love that your approach does both, all at the same time. Excellent stuff Therapy Sister!

Having an anxiety disorder and financially struggling a little at the moment, I'm really happy that your advice really helped (so far, going on 14 days anxiety attack and mostly panic attack free!), and your videos are free! I can't really afford a therapist right now, so feeling like I can put it off a bit longer really helps! All thanks to you!
