This was simply a battle of sibling rivalry, not to kill each other, it was a test to know who's better than the other. All in all it was an emotional Battle. Look at how the fist fight went and how after noticing that the people they cared about, were getting hurt they decided to end it? After Ragnar gave a command to save largetha he was going back into the battle because it wasn't over and it won't be over until the other surrends to the other.
Makes you wonder how many fights back then actually devolved into fisticuffs to the end , I can imagine on battlefields like both armies needing a quick time out between some fights 😂 adrenaline can only take you so far some of these wars lasted days and nights but no way was all of that fighting 😂

What can we say about this scene ?The Vikings feel abandoned by Odin ,each of them personally makes his own history ,Bjorn becomes a berserker,no man can touch him and everyone falls by his axe! Anyone noticed in this battle the vikings are killing many French men at arms only because fhe French crossbow men are limited in numbers on account of the boats sizes as the french crossbow men were the reason why so many viking warriors fell in pervious battles so the vikings can fight the french men at arms in melee like they wanted as melee combat is their strong suit.
Not exactly. The troops that surrounds the main vikings are all elite warriors. While the first french units to enter combat are regulars. But when Rollo, accompagnied with elite arrive, this turn the tide. Great or elite vikings are getting injured or killed. The battle start to be even. But since the french have the number and tired the vikings elite out with regular troops. They gain the upper hand. French regulars were meat to weaken the viking elite and they served their purpose well. That is why Ragnar was dumb in this battle. Never put your elites on the first line. Because no matter how good they are, a lot of them will die. And when elites dies. The moral of the whole army is taking a hit. Such a waste of good soldiers... The viking elite is now tired and suffered casualties when the french elite arrive... And as expected... Tired, outnumbered (also because french regulars are supporting french elite) and with loss of men... The viking elite is getting demolished.

Of course as you said the french regulars were simply to try and wear Down the viking army most powerful warriors. And it worked especially sincevthe French outnumber the vikings and if course Rollo and his elite men at arms arrived turned the tide of the battle. The vikings are better at raids and run hit attacks not full frontal battles like this as the french fight them at their own game with ships of Their own. And yes once the viking elites were to tired they got picked off by lucky stabs from. Swords and spears or shot from crossbow bolts. Add in the fact many vikings were seeking personal glory for themselves. And like you said the viking elites got worn down by the french elites and regulars troops. Plus Ragner I between wanted revenge at this point against Rollo and the Frank's by ant means possible. This battle to me could be considered a defining moment in history between the barbaric vikings and frankish civilization.
in all honesty the northern tribes where some of the best warriors who ever lived for 2 reasons one is that even the ones such as Saxons (the ones from modern day Germany not the ones from England) the farmers were trained for war to fight when called upon by the lord whose lands they belonged to, and 2 every north god was in some way a god of war the only way to get into the best of the three after life's was to fall in battle (as in die on the battle field not from wounds after) so most of them had training and a want to fight plus they would throw them self at bigger groups and the best fighter trying to draw the gods eyes so the ones who lived where basically the same as a kings guard in skill
Rollo - living in his brother's shade, ended up being one of the most influencal hystorical characters from the show, and yes - he is my favourite character, he was amazing and deserved better - he wanted to be great and wanted to be successful - but he never would be under Ragnar, I like Ragnar a lot also - but they were both too ambitious - which would always separate them
As tenacious and treacherous as he was, Rollo would not have killed Ragnar because the love he feels for his brother in reality exceeds that which he has for his wife Gisla. (However Rollo could have seriously injured Ragnar but with great care, he wanted in advance that this fight against his brother be done without a weapon, just fist against fist). - Whoever pushed Ragnar away during the fateful altercation between the 2 brothers deserves more recognition. - It was good in this scene that they winked at Torstein and put on the same song as when he died, which would have made a lot more sense if in this battle an important character had to die or even 2. Is that Halfdan and Lagertha should have died at this precise moment, it would have made the scene more poignant, and the turn of events would have been much more different and meaningful in the future. - Knowing that the attacks of his ordinary soldiers were well placed in their blood vessels and almost even seeing at the level of their hearts whether it was the dart or the sword received by the 2.
Not to mention that this time he had everything to protect (his family, lands and people who came to accept him), while Ragnar had nothing to protect in Frankia. When you have something/someone worthy of dying to protect, you may become a beast (see also how the Franks, after being reminded of that by Rollo, had fought them off like chads).

Rollo in this show is Ragnar's older brother. They been through a lot, had a lot of battles and injuries. I still think in this scene Ragnar had opportunity to hurt Rollo and didn't take it. Look at the sword fight closer, Ragnar could've swung up into Rollo's chest and didn't take it. Ragnar is an interesting individual, it's almost like he wants to die. He is Boarder line reckless at times too. But he's Goal oriented, so once he sets his mind to something, he normally finds a way.
Nah I think Björn surpasses him later on by a huge margin. Dude was a master technical fighter and his stamina seems to just legit never run out. Rollo was physically strong, but that's all he had
As a historian and a archaeologist this series is just such a LOL, the Frankish armies were the sole reason that west europe didnt fall to the Moorish expansion through Spain, who were one of the most professional, train and modern forces in europe at the time. The idea that they would have had any trouble facing against a small rabble from the nordic area is just such a joke lol. Look into why they were given the land in reality, because he and the norse raids was a annoyance, that could be bought of easily while the Franks could go deal with more pressing matters, dealing with the beginnings of what would become the reconquista in Spain and the expansion into the germanic territories east of the rhine.

The Norse didn't wage often battles against the Franks, it was hit and run as the Franks were the Germanic Top Dogs which had defeated all other tribes and organized Europe into the Catholic Feudal slavedom which only the French revolution and Napoleon ended.

Ragnar really was a beautiful soul and his light carried the whole viking world forward, i hated to see the fall of greatness.
Why should Rollo accept to be second to Ragnar, when after he had kept Ragnar's family safe from Borg, helped him regain Kattegat from the Jarl and almost risked his life in wessex for Ragnar's ambitions, Ragnar didn't give anything to reward his loyalty, such as a title, land, wealth? Ragnar may be a "pure" soul, but he failed to understand that loyalty and respect must be repaid by equal loyalty and respect and not be taken for granted; Charles didn't do that after Rollo had defended Paris and Gisla from the first attack, and that's why Rollo didn't mind being second to his father-in-law.

You're arguing physical superiority in a fight with weapons, armor and shields though. Ragnar favors a precise dual weapon style which allows him to maintain battlefield view and command while still fighting, but he is also known to use a shield and operate within the wall during small scale fights. Rollo on the other hand tends to forego the use of any significant armor in favor of a more powerful, (and nimble actually) physical style. However, Ragnar's tendency towards axe and sword means that his quick, parry and thrust style is perfect for getting inside of Rollo's preference for larger weapons, and take advantage of his comparatively light armor preference. Rollo and Ragnar are great instinctual fighters, but Ragnar favors a quicker style and is more cunning to boot. Also, the show has never established Rollo as simply being the "best" fighter. In Viking society, martial ability is prized above all else, and Ragnar is good enough that he made himself KING at the tip of a sword. Furthermore, the constant threat to Rollo and his traiterous ways is that RAGNAR is coming for him. Rollo has never been used as a threat to Ragnar however.
I definitely believe that they would have both ended up killing each other rollo probably would have landed a fatal blow first then in the moment Ragnar would catch him off guard in Rollo’s realization that he just killed his brother

It's his, since he took his brother's loyalty for granted too long, with no reward, material or even symbolic (see when Ragnar took the axe away from him and gave it to Bjorn instead before the sacrifice of Borg's man). Ragnar failed to realize that loyalty, especially in times when loyalty amongst members of a family is far from granted, when power and lands are involved, must be reciprocated and above all, rewarded for real: watch how the emperor treated Rollo *after he gave him Gisla to marry* and see the difference.

At those times, loyalty is something you must give in order to have it, and not only demand it; the frank emperor didn't take Rollo's loyalty for granted nor demand it, and what did he gain? Rollo's loyalty to himself.
I feel like people do not pay much attention when watching these shows. As fighters, Ragnar & Rollo are shown to be pretty much equal. Rollo is bigger & stronger, while Ragnar is more agile. However, Rollo is ONLY known as a warrior. Ragnar is known for his other attributes as well. This is the source of their strife, as Rollo was always jealous that when compared to Ragnar he was reduced to just a great warrior. Even in this duel, while both older, Ragnar is able to go blow to blow with Ragnar despite still being injured & suffering from withdrawal. Any duel between the two could go either way.

Rollo was never fit to be Jarl or King of kattegat. He was to inpacient. He could never wait or listen to his enemies before striking them. Ragnar in season 1-2 always listen, try to learn from all perspectives. Rollo rushed into combat all the time. Ragnar is a better ruler. At this point he was sick. If Athaelstan lived Ragnar would never die. In my opinion Ragnar died when Athalstaen died.
And drowned in his own sorrows and failures; meanwhile rollo has found his "place under the sun" and his happiness. S1-2 were about Ragnar's rise in power and Rollo's demise; s3-4a were the other way around.

Anyone noticed in this battle the vikings are killing many French men at arms only because fhe French crossbow men are limited in numbers on account of the boats sizes as the french crossbow men were the reason why so many viking warriors fell in pervious battles so the vikings can fight the french men at arms in melee like they wanted as melee combat is their strong suit.
Not exactly. The troops that surrounds the main vikings are all elite warriors. While the first french units to enter combat are regulars. But when Rollo, accompagnied with elite arrive, this turn the tide. Great or elite vikings are getting injured or killed. The battle start to be even. But since the french have the number and tired the vikings elite out with regular troops. They gain the upper hand. French regulars were meat to weaken the viking elite and they served their purpose well.
That is why Ragnar was dumb in this battle. Never put your elites on the first line. Because no matter how good they are, a lot of them will die. And when elites dies. The moral of the whole army is taking a hit. Such a waste of good soldiers...
The viking elite is now tired and suffered casualties when the french elite arrive...
And as expected... Tired, outnumbered (also because french regulars are supporting french elite) and with loss of men... The viking elite is getting demolished.

Of course as you said the french regulars were simply to try and wear Down the viking army most powerful warriors. And it worked especially sincevthe French outnumber the vikings and if course Rollo and his elite men at arms arrived turned the tide of the battle. The vikings are better at raids and run hit attacks not full frontal battles like this as the french fight them at their own game with ships of Their own.
And yes once the viking elites were to tired they got picked off by lucky stabs from. Swords and spears or shot from crossbow bolts. Add in the fact many vikings were seeking personal glory for themselves. And like you said the viking elites got worn down by the french elites and regulars troops. Plus Ragner I between wanted revenge at this point against Rollo and the Frank's by ant means possible.
This battle to me could be considered a defining moment in history between the barbaric vikings and frankish civilization.
in all honesty the northern tribes where some of the best warriors who ever lived for 2 reasons one is that even the ones such as Saxons (the ones from modern day Germany not the ones from England) the farmers were trained for war to fight when called upon by the lord whose lands they belonged to, and 2 every north god was in some way a god of war the only way to get into the best of the three after life's was to fall in battle (as in die on the battle field not from wounds after) so most of them had training and a want to fight plus they would throw them self at bigger groups and the best fighter trying to draw the gods eyes so the ones who lived where basically the same as a kings guard in skill

Rollo - living in his brother's shade, ended up being one of the most influencal hystorical characters from the show, and yes - he is my favourite character, he was amazing and deserved better - he wanted to be great and wanted to be successful - but he never would be under Ragnar, I like Ragnar a lot also - but they were both too ambitious - which would always separate them
As tenacious and treacherous as he was, Rollo would not have killed Ragnar because the love he feels for his brother in reality exceeds that which he has for his wife Gisla. (However Rollo could have seriously injured Ragnar but with great care, he wanted in advance that this fight against his brother be done without a weapon, just fist against fist).
- Whoever pushed Ragnar away during the fateful altercation between the 2 brothers deserves more recognition.
- It was good in this scene that they winked at Torstein and put on the same song as when he died, which would have made a lot more sense if in this battle an important character had to die or even 2. Is that Halfdan and Lagertha should have died at this precise moment, it would have made the scene more poignant, and the turn of events would have been much more different and meaningful in the future.
- Knowing that the attacks of his ordinary soldiers were well placed in their blood vessels and almost even seeing at the level of their hearts whether it was the dart or the sword received by the 2.
Viking lead by Ragnar and Lagertha exhausted and defeated on this battle scene, just like some noble France said... So, they just a normal human.
This showed that everyone was not in their prime, that even legends fade with age…
Rollo was always a better fighter, he saved Ragnar's life in the very first scene of this series
Not to mention that this time he had everything to protect (his family, lands and people who came to accept him), while Ragnar had nothing to protect in Frankia.
When you have something/someone worthy of dying to protect, you may become a beast (see also how the Franks, after being reminded of that by Rollo, had fought them off like chads).

I still think in this scene Ragnar had opportunity to hurt Rollo and didn't take it. Look at the sword fight closer, Ragnar could've swung up into Rollo's chest and didn't take it. Ragnar is an interesting individual, it's almost like he wants to die. He is Boarder line reckless at times too. But he's Goal oriented, so once he sets his mind to something, he normally finds a way.
Nah I think Björn surpasses him later on by a huge margin. Dude was a master technical fighter and his stamina seems to just legit never run out. Rollo was physically strong, but that's all he had

As a historian and a archaeologist this series is just such a LOL, the Frankish armies were the sole reason that west europe didnt fall to the Moorish expansion through Spain, who were one of the most professional, train and modern forces in europe at the time. The idea that they would have had any trouble facing against a small rabble from the nordic area is just such a joke lol. Look into why they were given the land in reality, because he and the norse raids was a annoyance, that could be bought of easily while the Franks could go deal with more pressing matters, dealing with the beginnings of what would become the reconquista in Spain and the expansion into the germanic territories east of the rhine.

Why should Rollo accept to be second to Ragnar, when after he had kept Ragnar's family safe from Borg, helped him regain Kattegat from the Jarl and almost risked his life in wessex for Ragnar's ambitions, Ragnar didn't give anything to reward his loyalty, such as a title, land, wealth?
Ragnar may be a "pure" soul, but he failed to understand that loyalty and respect must be repaid by equal loyalty and respect and not be taken for granted; Charles didn't do that after Rollo had defended Paris and Gisla from the first attack, and that's why Rollo didn't mind being second to his father-in-law.

You're arguing physical superiority in a fight with weapons, armor and shields though. Ragnar favors a precise dual weapon style which allows him to maintain battlefield view and command while still fighting, but he is also known to use a shield and operate within the wall during small scale fights. Rollo on the other hand tends to forego the use of any significant armor in favor of a more powerful, (and nimble actually) physical style. However, Ragnar's tendency towards axe and sword means that his quick, parry and thrust style is perfect for getting inside of Rollo's preference for larger weapons, and take advantage of his comparatively light armor preference.
Rollo and Ragnar are great instinctual fighters, but Ragnar favors a quicker style and is more cunning to boot.
Also, the show has never established Rollo as simply being the "best" fighter. In Viking society, martial ability is prized above all else, and Ragnar is good enough that he made himself KING at the tip of a sword. Furthermore, the constant threat to Rollo and his traiterous ways is that RAGNAR is coming for him. Rollo has never been used as a threat to Ragnar however.

I feel like people do not pay much attention when watching these shows. As fighters, Ragnar & Rollo are shown to be pretty much equal. Rollo is bigger & stronger, while Ragnar is more agile. However, Rollo is ONLY known as a warrior. Ragnar is known for his other attributes as well. This is the source of their strife, as Rollo was always jealous that when compared to Ragnar he was reduced to just a great warrior. Even in this duel, while both older, Ragnar is able to go blow to blow with Ragnar despite still being injured & suffering from withdrawal. Any duel between the two could go either way.
Rollo has very envy to Ragnar's dream, fame he was trying to think like ragnar

Rollo was never fit to be Jarl or King of kattegat. He was to inpacient. He could never wait or listen to his enemies before striking them. Ragnar in season 1-2 always listen, try to learn from all perspectives. Rollo rushed into combat all the time. Ragnar is a better ruler. At this point he was sick. If Athaelstan lived Ragnar would never die. In my opinion Ragnar died when Athalstaen died.
