Ryan's 2002 BMW E46 330xi Intro

- With the amount of time and money that invested in my 2000 M5 this spring and over the past several years, I can't stand to put it through another brutal Ohio winter. So, this 330xi is my winter car. I plan to maintain this vehicle, and improve the interior so it's still a nice place to spend time. However, it's not getting anywhere near the special treatment that my firstborn will continue to receive for many years.

Sounds like you want to see some videos. Will do! I'll make videos for whatever work I do.
Since you mentioned you won't be keeping the 330 very long would you be interested in selling it in the future? I live in KY so I wouldn't be too far from you.
Glad to see an intro to the car, and have an indepth look. Especially as I hold the E46 so dear to my heart.
I just bought that car. I used your video to make my decision.👌🏾
I just payed $3600 for 196k 2002 330xi Automatic. It's my first BMW and ohh I love it!
Yes please make tons of videos on this one too lol
I just bought a 2004 330i in great condition, just 110,000 km (about 68,000 miles). It's good to see how well these cars age. Incidentally, I've never seen someone put as much trouble into a short term ride as you've put into yours.
Nice car, X's are great in the snow. E46 Fanatics is a terrific resource. Given the mileage, I'm assuming the usual overhauls are already done: cooling system, belts, pulley's, bushings, window regulators, VCG, DISA, OFG, and the such. That's before modding.
Hey Ryan, thanks for your videos so far! I also have a 2002 330xi and your DIY videos are really appreciated as I try to start working on some things on my own. Good luck!
Happy to help! Thanks for watching.
More DIY of the E46!!! I just bought one of those cars (E46 318i 12/2000) and I need to replace a lot of the interior stuff and your videos are the best way to do it!
You got it!
Ryan, there's an easier way to check your odometer miles than starting the car. Without the key in the ignition, just press the odometer button between the fuel gauge and the speedo. That will light up the odometer without all the fuss of starting the engine and waiting for the service mileage to turn off.
I've had an '01 330xi for the last 11 years. Other than routine maintenance, it's been trouble free for the last 206,000+ miles. It still looks good and the interior is in good shape. You'd never guess the actual miles if you hadn't seen the odometer. This is the latest of many BMWs since 1969 and the newer stuff out there just doesn't appeal... far too much "Nanny Electronic Stuff" to put up with!
Yes, I have since learned this! This video is over 8 years old now, believe it or not.
I certainly miss my 330xi, and I would have brought it to California with me if it didn't have so much body rust.
Great choice for a winter car, from personal experience I can tell that xDrive works great! Please do some more videos!
Hi Ryan . I just subscribed to your channel . Love it . Very informative and I like your DIY's . I actually met you at Timmayfest 2014 in Columbus with my Son . I have a 2003 E46 330i . I would love to see more DIY videos that you film , or I hope you can film in the future updating & restoring your 330i . Thanks again for the great vids , love watching them !
Yes yes yes I remember now! Thanks so much for the support. TH-cam flagged your other comment as spam, so I wasn't sure. I approved it though. I'll be filming tons with my E46 :)
I'd love to see more videos on this car!
you're crazy to drive an M-car in the snow in the first place! i've got an e46 M3 here in Canada and I always garage it during the winter
Hi Ryan - I too have a 2002 e46 330i which I am slowly restoring. So yes, I would like to see more videos of you working on fixing up this car!
You got it!
Yees more videos!!
Simple, but useful. Thanks!
I never watch full videos on youtube, but for some reason i was very interested in this review. You know what you are talking about. Keep it up!
im jealous of your back seats lol. i wanted the ski pass thru in my vehicle. they make a sub box the fits a kicker l7 that goes right there in the ski pass. nice e46
very nice
Good find, I enjoy your videos very much. I removed some pinstripes and you can just use a heat gun or hairdryer and it will peel right off leaving no marks, just a bit of glue that you can easily remove with a cleaner wax or polish.
Thanks for the feedback! I'll keep that in mind if I ever run into another car with pin stripes down it!
For my 2004 330xi I paid $8,000. I think I got a good deal on in considering overall pretty clean.
This is the very rare aerodynamic package, not the same as the M-package.
I have a 2004 BMW 330CI and i love it to death
Nice car, I used to own a E46 coupe, got rid of it and got a E39 530i now, and I would go right back... they are fun, good handling cars that look very nice. The DWA alarm module can easily be coded with Progman V32, no dealer visit required. The paint imperfections can also easily be sorted (as good as professional) yourself, if you have questions about that or anything else BMW related, PM me. Congratz on your buy! Ps: 5000$ is the price you would pay here in Belgium/Germany also, it's ok.
Progman V32? I'll have to look into that for sure. Thanks so much!
*****
Progman is BMW software at dealer level. Now client/server based software is used because of the need of constant updating. In the past they used DIS/INPA/PROGMAN/BMW standard tools,.... to take care of diagnostics/programming/coding. Where INPA and DIS are diagnostic tools that can query every module present in your car (they can also do component activation/tests etc), Progman is a GUI based application for coding/programming modules (including retrofits, changing vehicle order etc etc) It is cheap if you buy the OBD cable with software on Ebay, just so a search for BMW GT1 or BMW DIS, INPA) but it also requires patience and common sense...but once you master the basic functions, trust me, you can not live without it as a BMW owner/mechanic. Ps: I started a thread on e39 source on m54b30 cylinder head overhaul, it can be paused or deleted since I don't have the time now :( Tnx.
Yannique1 Thanks for the information! I'll be figuring this out soon. And alright, we'll remove the thread on the head post.
Hi Ryan!
Not a bad find, great engine that M54 (same one I have in the family 530i you uploaded a video on)
Regarding your E46 as I have one as a daily too I would love to see videos on it, For what they are they're great cars and you can't go wrong with one, and on the subject of license plate bulbs I would try and clean it up the best you can with contact cleaner and some abrasive tools to get rid of the corrosion.
failing that you may have a split in the wiring harness to the trunk which is a VERY common E46 problem but I have done a video on that on my other channel going through the whole diagnosis and repair process so if it comes to that I'll leave the link to that video in the description here.
BMW boot wiring harness diagnosis and repair (E36 E46 E38 E39)
Will.
Love it. Id totally buy it from you when you are done with it
Well I'll be looking for a buyer in December of 2016!!
Ryan could you do a video or something at some point outlining the way in which you search for a used car? What websites, resources, people you check with and such? I'll be in the market for my first car soon with a pretty low budget (probably under 5k), so it'd be really helpful to know where to start looking.
I think shadow line exterior trim would definitely improve how E46 looks. It would match beautifully with Topaz Blue. Beside that - excelllent winter car :)
I have a 2004 330xi and its great in the winter. The only thing I would suggest is to maybe replace the cooling system and the thermostat before winter. My car has had 6 thermostats in its life and it seems to always fail in the winter.
Oh man I hope I don't have that problem. I'm not ready to take on that project right now though! I'll treat it well and hope things go in my favor.
Congrats on the car Ryan! That paint work is in great shape given the miles. If I were you I would put an M or ZHP steering wheel on it. Never liked the thin E46 sport steering wheel anyway haha.
Yeah I really don't like the wheel either... but it's expensive, very expensive. I'd put an E46 M3/E39 M5 wheel on it... but to do that right it's $700.
I was wondering how long it would take you to do this. :)
I picked up an 03 325i with 79K for $9000 a couple years ago. I guess when they get over 100k miles they don't depreciate that much.
Is that rust from lack of maintenance from previous owners?
Good call to get another car for use during winter. Like you I love my M but drive her in all weather conditions except winter. I don't mind the cold and snow but the amount of salt they dump on the roads is crazy, and that's the greatest enemy. Do they use a lot of road salt over there too?
They turn our roads in beaches with salt. That's my primary reasoning for a second car!
13:30. Why do u leave your lights on automatic... I remember you saying that the sensor is too sensitive in your m5 intro years ago
Yeah lots of DIY Please! (:
I love e46 but where I live for 5k you can get 330ci with 110k miles on Craigslist beautiful cars
I found a 2001 Bmw 530i for 5,000 on craigslist. It is in amazing condition and it has a clean title. It has 149,00 miles on it. Is it a fair price or is it too cheap?
Ryan are you guys having any BMW get togethers up your way ... or just hanging out for dinner with your cars ? I'm in Columbus . Let me know and I'll drive up sometime .
Hey, anytime! We don't have any formal gatherings setup... but we're always up for a dinner in town and an excuse to take the cars out! Let me know, feel free to email me ryan@e39source.com
you should defiantly do some DIY vids im about to get a 330ci and plan to change some of the things on it.
Thank you so much for all these videos. I have 1 question... Where are you getting all those parts from? Like the cup holders, new emblem for the hood, etc... Thank you!
+Daniel Mikhail Somestimes ECS Tuning, sometimes The BMW/Mini Parts Store. FCP Euro has some good prices and a lifetime warranty on every part they sell also.
+E39Source Thanks so much. I have never owned a BMW before. I bought a 2002 325i for 2k. It needs some work... i'm assuming you do all your own upgrades/replacements. I am not handy at all... so i might have to take it to the shop. Thanks again for this awesome channel.
+Daniel Mikhail Gotta start somewhere! Try a simple repair and go from there. :)
My sunroof shade comes off and has a play...any ideas how to fix this?
Mine is missing all together! That seems to solve the problem.
where did you get the little plastic piece to fill in the empty spot after removing the front license plate? whats the name of that part? Thanks!
It's a license plate delete panel. The part number for my car was 51118195304. That is for a 2002 BMW E46 330xi with M aerodynamics package.
Sweet, thank you! Do you still have this car? I have a 2002 330i. I love the car they are very nice and reliable.
Yes I do! Winter car that is on break for the summer now.
Awesome! Hey thanks for the info. I am going to look into getting that piece for the front bumper, I personally dont like the look of that license plate being there.
How does it drive with the 214k miles? I was looking at a 2001 330i with just about 212k and its in very good condition outside, decent interior. The guys wants $2,400, worth it?
$2400 theres got to be something wrong with it... at least in my local market there would be. It drives okay, but not as tight as I'm sure it once did. My expectations are not high for it though.
Hey Ryan just wondering where you get your e46 parts from
I use ECS Tuning for new parts that I buy... but I'm try to be economical with this car, so I'm using ebay for whatever I can.
Sweet thanks
Does it come with hid's
Xenons
man, there is a beautiful artic silver 330i (non sport but still a beauty) with the 17 inch turbine wheels and luxury package being sold around my way. it looks gorgeous... thing is, it has 200K miles, looks to be in top shape though. they are asking 3000 or best offer, what do you think?
Your opinion is much valued ryan, thanks!
-Henry
+Henry Perez If the car runs and drives and sounds good, it's probably a good deal as long as you're not expecting to get another 100k miles out of it. It'd probably do it, but it might get pricey.
***** yeah i'm defintely not expecting anything past 30 thousand miles, i'm just looking for a nice reliable DD and i know the pride in ownership a lot of bmw owners take in their cars. The car is owned by an adult couple who have a bible worth of repair history. i'm going to lay back and think on it, though i am sure if i don't make up my mind quick somone is going to steal it for cheap.
thanks for the input Ryan!
+Henry Perez Yeah you'll need to be fairly efficient with your decision. It sounds like the car has had a good home, so if it sounds okay and drives alright then go for it!
***** Thanks again for your input pal, much obliged! I will let you know if i pulled the trigger or not :)
Make DIY videos pls! I have a e46
yes do diy vids
Love the videos, but I can't believe the price of that e46, here in the UK that would be worth roughly £1000 with that mileage and that condition, roughly $1600. Hard to say exactly as we didn't get the Xi in the UK, but still seems expensive to me.
Wow!!! $1600 won't get you the cheapest American car form 1995 with 250,000 miles and rust everywhere here...
***** I recently bought a 330Ci with half the mileage probably similar condition if not slightly better as no rust and I paid £1300. Why are the cars so expensive?
Callum Ramigojag It's what the market is here, I think it's a great deal!
A similar 3 series of that age in Australia would easily set you back $10,000 :(
My friend got a 330xi 5spd with 113k for $5,400
You got borderline ripped off bro. Don't know the market around you, but In Nc this car would be worth max 3k. Even around you I don't understand how this car would be more than 3500-4k.
Also love the channel. 540i6 anthracite, nc. Peace
I got it for $1000 under KBB. I think I got a good deal. The only BMWs for sale around here for under $4000 are mid 90s 318s with 300,000 miles and rust on every single panel. Didn't know NC was so cheap!
Gotcha bro, good luck with this one.
I think the thing in nc is: the rust. Around here the rust is Gonna scare people away, thus the drastically lower price. Perhaps more common around you.
Greendragon420able Yeah, there's no such thing as a car here without rust. There is VERY little on this thing considering it's age and miles.
i can't look on those ugly rims, plzzz plzzz put some nice 18" on ...
he got money for shit, he can buy rims don't get butthurt
They don't bother me actually. When I want nice wheels I'll go in my garage and look at the style 65s ;)
I would love to have 65s but i cant find them in ori paint and good price :/
***** Put tracks and go full badass.
***** I don't mind the rims either, there's no point having nice ones in the snow since they'll just get rusted anyway from all the salt they put down
