  • Across the board, E46 BMWs can be had for fractions of their original MSRP. So, can the smallest, cheapest, and least powerful cousin of the legendary E46 M3 possibly retain the brand's core values?

    I’m a master certified bmw technician. I don’t usually comment on videos, I just watch and go my way.
    But I’m making a exception and leaving this comment.
    I’ve watched BMW’s on VCR tapes before TH-cam, before the internet even existed. I’m 40 I grew up on magazines and my pay phones.
    That being said this is one of the best bmw videos I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. I completely agree with everything you had to say.
    Really well done video, thanks for putting a smile on my face with your E46 video 👨🏼‍🔧👏🏼

      Just got one today 04 XI, crazy how it fell into place. After hearing several people say I made huge mistake bc of maintenance expenses...I was starting to second guess my surprise purchase. I had plans to buy Honda Element for practicality. I was not excited about the soccer mom vibe due to shifter placement . I did love the suicide style rear door and tailgate area but I'm more a 69 Fastback ... covid-19 Pandemic struggle choices limited.
      Short version..thank you for making this video! Relatable, engaging also informative. After watching video, I can now go to sleep peacefully bc I made the only reasonable decision....Buy the BMW. Have a great

    The e46 is the perfect first car. I bought a 330xi auto in college and completely fell in love with it. It taught me how to drive, how to work on cars, and how to properly care for them. It’s fun, refined, and timeless. I have had ZERO mechanical failures over the 60,000 miles I’ve put on it. Common wear items such as bushings and axels but it has never ever left me stranded. The day I have to sell my little 3 series is one I’m not looking forward to.

    Great video! I just bought my first BMW, a 2004 325XI and i was blown away the first time I drove it. As a Miata owner as well, you nailed it right on the head. Even though mine is an automatic, and its not fast, it still has that sports car DNA that just makes it so fun to drive but still is a good daily driver. Little apprehensive on maintenance costs, but so far I love the car.

    *EXCELLENT VIDEO*
    Superb visual quality, and informative performance breakdown.
    Upon research, I'm noticing people are leaning more towards the 325 "i", as a pose to the "xi" due to that slight speed difference of 189 hp, versus the 186 hp - as well as better mpg, due to the total car weight of the "i" being slightly lighter.
    It's tough making a decision on either model, but I guess your environment should dictate a final decision.
    Thanks mega-much for sharing *an informative video. Liked/Subscribed.

    • @BuzzytheBlue
      @BuzzytheBlue  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I agree with your research. In climates where the AWD of the Xi isn’t needed, the “i” is the better all around car. As you said, more performance, less weight, and better gas mileage. Plus, less complex drivetrain to maintain, the front axles of the Xi are a common problem area.

    I've owned mine for 9 years. And I have a tendency to buy and sell cars often. Mine is now at 131k miles. Replaced the front axles because of a torn CV boot, and replaced the thermostat. That's it. So your review was absolutely spot on. I live in Santa Fe, and the car is really satisfying on our mountain roads here. Since we don't use salt in the winter, there is no telling how long this little AWD can last. Oh and definitely the manual transmission is the way to go!

(I did once briefly own an Acura integra) What I have primarily owned are full sized American rwd sedans. All my experience with snow in those has always been the main drawback and this year I decided to seek an awd and it came down to BMW and Subaru being the go to in terms of reliability and comfort for a family of 4. I am wondering with all wheel drive, I’ve had rear wheel and front and can control those no prop if slip, sometimes I do for fun.. and this car sticks. But worried about when it slips if it does, wonder how it will be to correct a all wheel drive? .. not that I would on purpose but stuff happens..

    • @BuzzytheBlue
      @BuzzytheBlue  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s rear biased AWD with a constant split, never changes. So it’s very predictable and will drive similar to what you’re used to from a RWD car. They’re a blast in the snow, very capable but fun to slide around if you choose too.

    I too have an m roadster (although its a Z3M) and I found a 2004 325xi for only $1500. Automatic sadly, but only has 130k mies on her. Are these good in snow?

    • @BuzzytheBlue
      @BuzzytheBlue  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Excellent in the snow. If you live somewhere that gets a lot, throw a decent set of snow tires on it and you’ll be unstoppable. I had blizzaks on my last 325xi and I couldn’t get it stuck if I tried. But, a side note, be very very careful buying one that cheap, could need quite a bit of mechanical work. Definitely go on an extensive test drive.

    Question for you: where does the motor sit rev wise when on the highway at say 80? My e36 with a five speed manual sits at about 3500-4000, and is rather loud and buzzy. Is this car the same?

    • @BuzzytheBlue
      @BuzzytheBlue  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don’t own the car anymore but I never felt it was revving too high or buzzy on the highway. I imagine at 80 it was turning similar RPM, 3500-4000, but the smoothness and refinement of the M54 meant it was still silky smooth and quiet.

    • @BuzzytheBlue
      @BuzzytheBlue  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      On an E46 in general? Or the Xi in particular. The Xi drivetrain cannot handle big power, anything over 300 you would start breaking stuff. If you mean a 325i (RWD) idk, depends on your budget, whether you’d do the work yourself, access to fabrication etc. the overwhelming majority of the time I’d recommend against that and just putting the money into a faster car.

    If it were you, would you take a 325i (with a tune making about 230whp, a msport suspension, exhaust along with a few other things) or a 330xi that would need some aesthetic fixes? Both are around 5k

    • @BuzzytheBlue
      @BuzzytheBlue  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would love to know what else that 325i has on it if they’re claiming 230whp lmao. I know guys with headers and pretty much every NA bolt on you can buy that only make around 190-200whp. Far more likely that the car is making maybe 230 crank hp. If the car is going to be your daily driver, assuming both have similar mileage as well, just take the 330Xi. It’ll be about as fast, or even feel faster because the stock powerband will be more accessible and torquey than the modified 2.5L. And assuming the aesthetic fixes aren’t too major.

    For anyone wanting to do a cheap budget upgrade to this vehicle, try to find someone selling their old stock 17 inch wheels from another bmw. When you upgrade to 17's, now you can upgrade your calipers to 330xi calipers, which are a bit larger, and you can use 330xi rotor size. Also you can now install wider tires if you wish.

    With every m52 or m54 engine of 2.0, 2.2, 2.5 litres you can easely and affordable upgrade it to 2.8 or 3.0 litres by changing some engine parts and upgrading electronic systems. It keeps motor's number the same, it doesn't affect the resource, so this is a fully legal way to obtain 328 or 330, 528 or 530

    • @BuzzytheBlue
      @BuzzytheBlue  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Need the larger engines crank, rods, and pistons to do that. Not to mention if you’re doing that on an older car with higher mileage you’ll probably want to refresh just about everything else you touch while breaking the engine down. It can definitely BE done, just doesn’t seem like the move when you could just buy a car with the larger engine. I’d definitely do it if my M54 needed a rebuild/tear down anyway though!

    • @ingmar4ty
      @ingmar4ty ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BuzzytheBlue True. It's a good decision to do it with a total engine refresh. It must be a local specific, but in my part of the world its easier to mess up with your engine if you have a good beamer's body rather than find a 330 in a good shape.
