    Hey Ryan, thanks so much for these videos of your e46 (and yours and other e39s too.) I just got myself an 02 330xi as well and your videos serve as a huge inspiration. Thanks again

    Thanks Ryan for the great any many vlogs you've posted. I've driven a '02 330xi Touring Automatic for 2,5 years now and sure got inspired by some of your diy's. About the passenger mirror: the preset position you get when you go into reverse is adjustable/programmable by the adjuster knob when reverse gear is activated. This solution is so simple, you've probably tried it already. But I wanted to mention it anyway. Otherwise, the problem is your GM5-module, that's where the position is stored. As you've demonstrated, the motor is OK.

    Change the rear lights to the LED ones. Pretty cheap. And the Indicators to clear white just like you did on the M5

    You also can (and should, it's a HUGE improvement) code the halogen highs to come on with the xenon highs.

    You've done the major tune ups. oil changes in engine, differentials, transmission, steering etc. those I'm looking forward to on my car, an 05 325XI. all the little issues you've mentioned, which you took care of most of it btw, are very common with e46s. I'm just jealous of your garage and tools. I've done control arms and bushing on the ground for me it was a killer job. one things tho, engine cover gasket can wear out quickly causing leak to the engine. consider changing that on your next tune up if you haven't . glad to see an E46 partner taking care of his car.

    Love you videos! I am considering getting an 04 BMW 330xi. I see some on sale around me for $7-9,000 with around 70k-90k! I am in the NY area so I want reliability when winter comes my way. I am torn between this and an old Jeep Cherokee. My major concern is reliability, and I know around this many miles the water pump and thermostat tend to go... Any Suggestions on my next purchase?? Thank you for taking the time to read this!

      +Copperateme Copperateme I am up in NY for college, so I can say that both are good cars. The 330xi is reliable, but like any German car, parts can get expensive if something goes wrong. The Cherokee would be a little less to repair, but probably worse on gas.

    Can you give us the thicker spring pad info so we can order them? Also, which suspension components did you use, I have to do mine and I'm not sure which to go with. There's so many different brands and price ranges. I just want my car to drive good again and handle as good if not better than the stock sport suspension.

    • @E39Source

      I have yet to get around to that actually. It's a TuneLink auto though, which plugs into the cigarette lighter (or flashlight to cigarette lighter adapter for the glovebox) and then the aux that you must install to the radio plugs into that. Then connect your phone to the TuneLink via bluetooth, and allow it to output to the car's aux. Effective bluetooth audio.

    How was it running winter tires in the summer? Did it ever feel sketchy? A lot of people in my area seem to use winter tires all year because of our pitiful summers. I feel like you would have less control with the softer compound on a hot day, especially in tight turns. How did the tread hold up?

    Hey Ryan, how much do the rust repairs typically run you? The good ol' Midwest has done it's damage to my cars as well. More minor, like what you had to fix on your M5. Finding a body shop that will fix rust is hard to come by in my area it seems though.

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tom Chant For one area of small bubbles it's around $250, of course depending on the size of the area that needs to be re-finished so you don't see a paint mismatch.

    I'm from Santo Domingo in Dominican Republic and I'm so happy with your videos. I really respect your devotion and dedication with the bmw cars, specially with the E39 M5. I love your E39. Really impress with your knowledge. I'm trying to get an E60 M5, and I would like to have your opinion about that car. I'm concerned about fuel consumption. Thanks and god bless you!

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Duardy Estrella Thanks for the kind feedback, I'm glad you enjoy our content! The E60 M5 is a beast, but totally different than the E39. You don't get the same sensation of raw torque in the E60 though, so you won't notice that extra 100 horsepower until you're on the highway winding gears out to 8,000RPM. But then you feel it, and it's unreal. I wouldn't worry about fuel consumption, it's the same or better than the E39 M5. But neither car will get great consumption if you're driving the pants off them all the time. My dad dailys his E60 M5 in San Diego, and gets around 20MPH. Lots of highway, lots of traffic and city too. Not driven like a baby, but not raced either. I get around 17MPG in my E39 M5, but that's before my engine rebuild. I expect that it will increase a bit.

    • @duardy6274
      @duardy6274 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your advice! I'll really consider it. I love more the E39 than E60 but here in my country is more difficult to get an E39. My biggest concern about the E39 is the VANOS problems. I see a lot of people talking about that.

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Duardy Estrella A lot of people talk about it... but issues aren't that common in my experience. If there are no check engine lights on for VANOS related issues, and the car drives well, forget about it. The 2002s 2003s are the best for VANOS. 2001 is better than 2000, but even my 2000 went to 192,000 without any issues. And I'm rebuilding the engine now, but in no way because of the VANOS, it still works beautifully. A lot of cases for VANOS related codes are the CPS (camshaft position sensors) which are cheaper and easier to replace than the VANOS units. Also Dr. VANOS has all this explained much better than I can, so read about it on their website if you're still concerned.

    • @duardy6274

  • @obioban
    @obioban 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think you'll find a vanos rebuild adds a ton of torque-- the m54 is actually a pretty torquey engine. Not s62 torquey, but not lacking.
    Certainly shouldn't need to fight that much to get off the line. If it feels unsteerable at speed, you likely need many, many bushings replaced. My e46 (M3, but same suspension geometry) is more stable than my M5 at high speed (and every bushing in my M5 has

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +obioban I really look forward to having the VANOS done, I think that'll make a nice difference.
      I probably need rear trailing arm and subframe bushings amount others, but that's a pain in the ass! I was told its the OE (not the Genuine BMW branding, but OE) by my shop, who I do trust very much!

    I have the exact same car, but sport addition with Nav package. How do you get the lights programmed to all turn on like you said in the video? Want the ring lights to be on instead of just for the Police flash. And how did you program the windows to the fob?

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is also a sport edition, but the xi sports didn't get the lowering suspension like the rear wheel drive only models did.
      You need some coding software such as Carly, PASoft/BMW Scanner 1.4 or a trip to the dealer to enable those features.

    • @ShamloudTTV
      @ShamloudTTV 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      E39Source, LLC Thank you for the advice. Is this car still going strong? I also have that rear passenger side light out on the interior. You said something about how you replace an interior light, I have looked online but haven't found any part numbers or specific light that I need. Could you link me to the light you purchased?

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Truth I have sold the car and moved to California, but I sold it to a close friend. It still serves him well!
      Which light is out? The one in the c pillar that lights up the cabin or the “spot” light in the c pillar?

    • @ShamloudTTV
      @ShamloudTTV 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      E39Source, LLC that's good to hear. I bought mine with 98k miles on it and hope to get life out of it. And it's the one that lights up the cabin. Like when you go to exit the vehicle and lock the car it doesn't turn on, but the one across from it does.
      What kind of coding device would you use? Run it from laptop with what kind of connector?
      Or is there a device for those software products that's like plug and use?

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ShamloudTTV I don't recall ever replacing that. Is it maybe this? bit.ly/2UpWIGZ

    Hmm, that engine must have somethimg wrong with it and I did notice it took way to long for it to setel down att 800rpm wheen you started it. Have a 330xi touring manual my self (has the same 5th grear problem btw but how cares still works as normal just doesn't return to center allways, but after the 10th time you don't really even notice it any more). Also had a e39 540 4.4 touring for about a month (simply to big for my taste so sold it) and that thing did not feel any faster bellow 60mph. After it started to take of but before naah. To heavy and just slow. Even a friends s6 b6 4.2 feels pretty slow in lower speeds below 60) compared to the 330.
    But I do agree, it's an amazingly fun wintercar. Especially with Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8, fuse 39 I think it was pulled so the 4wd is completely mechanical it's seriously fun, only problem is it doesn't take long before your going close to 60mph sideways, also the 40/60 4wd helps a lot with that.... :):)

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes it settles down faster, sometimes slower. It depends on how warm the ambient and engine temperatures are. Nothing is wrong with it.

    At 24:10 you said your E46 330xi is hard to drive, is the E46 3 series difficult or easy to drive?

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BMWSource An automatic would be so easy to drive. The manual in these cars (525i, 530, 325, 330) is, at least to me, more difficult to drive than a manual M3 or M5. Maybe it's all the torque those M engines make that makes it easier to pick up. The manual E46 is not HARD to drive, it's just very different than the Ms I am used to.

    • @bmw.source
      @bmw.source 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +E39Source An old German car or any old BMW with an automatic transmission I'd say stay away, though the newer ones with the automatics, & DCT's are better. However if you want an old BMW or any older German car you're better off with a manual that's just my preference. Also is the E46 SMG transmission jerky cause I've heard it in reviews. BTW is your E39 ///M5 easy to drive, & handle? Also is the BMW E46 3 series a good first car?

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BMWSource I have only driven the SMG-III transmission, which was used in the E60 M5. It's okay, but I'd much prefer the manual. It feels slow to shift and can be jerky at times. The E39 M5 is a dream to drive. The power, brakes, and handling are all fantastic! I would say that a nice E46 would be a great first car IF you can do some of the basic maintenance yourself to save cash (oil change, filters, brakes). If you can do suspension components too that will save you a ton down the road.

    Great car but great doesn't mean perfect. Keep up with it repairs and all. It better than the current models of any brand. Value is increasing but so will your blood. Change oil twice a year. Lifter noise for the first five seconds is okay. Seat belt recoil, replace. Disa valve good for about six years but at the first sign of rattling, change it. Takes a full ten minutes to warm up. Engine should produce more power. Address that. They come to life at 2500 rpm to 5500 rpm. Quick and fast. Chech subframe.

      Hi David, thanks for the comment! I actually sold this 330xi to a friend in 2018 when I moved to California (and brought my M5 with me). He used it for the same purpose that I did (winter daily, protect M5s from elements) until he too moved west in 2020. From there it went to a third friend who used it as project car until the rust simply got too bad to bear. I had looked into having it addressed when it started, but it had been poorly repaired in the past and was too much effort and expense to remedy. I fear the car has been scrapped by now due to body failure- the engine and mechanicals stayed strong throughout he last time I saw it at over 260,000 miles.

      +Senad Selimovic Does it make that sound when the engine is cold? On cold starts, for the first several seconds or maybe up to a minute the secondary air pump runs and pumps hot air from the exhaust down onto the cats to warm them up faster so they're more efficient and thus the car makes cleaner emissions to start. The pump is located in front of the front passenger side wheel well, behind the bumper if that helps find the noise. This is normal, and if functioning correctly, they will all do this.

      +E39Source Hey
      yes its doing that noise sometimes only when the engine is cold, so like u sad this is normal right? because the car works perfectly other wise.

      +Senad Selimovic Yeah no worries, that's a US emissions feature working.

    unfortunately I think my e46 will be going away soon. The previous owner did too much damage, every time I fix something, something else breaks. mine only has 120,000 miles at 15 years old. I'm used to vehicles that carry me well past 200,000, having said that I know it isn't the car's fault, or BMWs build quality, just a shitty original owner.

    You americans are so naive to think that this car only has that little miles on it. You can turn the mileage back ya know ...
