Just to answer a couple of questions from comments: Diagnosis for this issue is steering wheel shaking or twitching, loss of power steering, a check engine or service light with message on the radio display for power steering, and a for sure diagnosis is an OBD2 scan showing a torque sensor code. (This scan can be done at an auto parts store) As for calibration, it is necessary if after install the wheel pulls SLIGHTLY by itself to one side. A dealership can definitely fix this issue, and likely any place that advertises alignment repair. HOWEVER if it is pulling hard and whipping the steering wheel around there's I high chance that you got a bad part and need to return it and try again. These cars need a GM Tech 2 tool or better to perform calibration, and ideally it would be on an alignment rack. I recommend a dealership for that.
Thanks for the video...I'm about to do this repair to my 2009 Pontiac G6 this weekend, & this is the most succinct video on this topic I've seen. I've read in several places that some folks actually didn't need to have it calibrated after installing, so I'm hoping that'll hold true for me, but if not, I'll just yank the little power steering fuse & drive it to a shop without power steering, which is how I'm driving it right now anyhow, & have them spend exactly 224 seconds calibrating it for me...hopefully they won't charge me too much for that.
You're welcome, glad you've found the video helpful. It's really not too bad of a job. You're right that it will not always need calibration, I just finished one up myself that worked great out of the box, these sensors can be finicky to say the least.
@Jon's Garage Well, after tracking down a 12" internal snap ring pliers at a local Harbor Freight Tools after already having everything torn apart (the only place I could find that had such a tool in stock so I didn't have to order it online & wait), I got it done this Saturday. I tried removing the hellish retaining ring with my 7" pliers, but this time, 7" wasn't nearly enough. It really is true that you want large snap ring pliers for that mammoth ring, otherwise you're just stuck in the mud & can't get the job done. Once I had the 12" pliers, just $29 at HF, I got the ring off easily on my first try. Now, when I had the new torque sensor installed & the steering wheel back on, it was time to test it before replacing all the trim. I hesitated for a good 10 minutes because I was a scared little B. "Please don't let the steering wheel spin to one side!!" I finally turned the key & no spinning...but did I have power steering?? Yes, yes I did!!! And no calibration! I'm a typical pretend mechanic who hates working on cars, but it feels so great when I'm able to complete a real job like this, restore something as vital as power steering, & save a fat stack in the process. Daddy's happy!!
Man this video was great! Very helpful. I successfully fixed my power steering with this information. And even ordered the proper part off your link in the bio. After the O'Reilly guys gave me the wrong part first lol. Anyhow. Thanks for this video! Very helpful
Replaced sensor. Wheel turns all the way to the left. Does that automatically mean its a bad sensor? Is it safe to drive to a dealership to see if it can be calibrated?
I watched this after I took everything apart. Wish I would have watched this first. I ended up taking the motor, sensor housing, and steering column off. Could have saved myself 20 minutes 🤣 thanks homie
I have a question is it ok to remove the pin on the sensor before you install it if the notch is not centered and the column will not move due to being unable to remove the sensor housing and motor?
I got a Fox well NT630 pro with abs airbag and SAS for steering calibration that I got from E bay for around hundred dollars or so , , Have not tried the steering calibration yet , but it looks I made A great buy if do , I only bought it too fix ABS did not know it could calibrate steering when i bought it , Has Anyone else Done the calibration with a scanner or are you having a shop do it , and how much $ just too calibrate?
The first car I did, a friend calibrated it with some snapon unit they had, the last time I did one a dealership calibrated it for $100. (side note, they are such finicky sensors, I do not claim to be an expert on them, they can be super frustrating)
There may be a recall on this. GM fixed my 2005 Malibu steering for free, although I don't really know what they replaced. But if you search you can find a recall on Malibu power steering.
How do you know the sensor is bad im have a a message on diplay ,power Sterling fluiid, the my power steering. Is not working i replaced the rack and pinion .but my steering wheel cranks to the right but i dont have a check engin light ,how do i get the sensor tested befor i do all that work
I have just run into this same issue. Symptoms include the steering wheel making small movements at idle, power steering message on radio, and power steering working for maybe 5 mins then stopping. Hope this helps!
Chevey dealership will not return electronic parts also states if turning to right the part was installed wrong and has to be replaced this was my experience in Ohio.
Hey jon so my steering wheel turns all the way to right. In your video it says yours did that too. Were u able to calibrate it after that or did u buy a mew sensor cuz your comment says that if it turns all the way to right thsn u need a mew sensor but in your video you said it turned all the way to right
After filming the video I took the car to a dealership to have it calibrated, where they said they could not get it to calibrate and that the part was probably bad. So I did it again with another new sensor from a different vendor, (the wheel did not turn all the way this time), took it back to the dealership and it was calibrated no issue. It's a tricky one, the guys at the dealership said they have had the same problem with new sensors as well. Unfortunately I don't have a straight answer for whether it's gonna be a bad part or not, I only know what happened to me.
Hey I want to replace this on my vehicle. I didn’t see the link to buy the part, and I was also wondering what type of scanner I need to reprogram the power steering?
I took the amazon link down because of untrustworthy parts from them. Here's a rock auto link, I've had much better success with their parts. www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=9113940&cc=1431703&pt=13497
GM23232310, I prefer parts from RockAuto these days as I've gotten bad sensors from Amazon. But also Amazon is good about refunding faulty parts, so your call. www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=9113940
Is this part interchangeable with "SWS109"? O'Reilly's says that "23232310" is NOT compatible with my 2005 Malibu Maxx but SWS109 is. Did they use a different sensor from 2004 to 2005? The part you recommend is quite a bit cheaper.
From what I can tell those 2 part numbers are interchangeable. I am not sure why O'Reilly's would say the 23232310 part won't fit the Maxx, everywhere else I've looked says it will.
@@jonsgarage2882 appreciate the video and reply 👍. I'll be trying this out tomorrow. I went ahead and ordered the part, looks like a goof on O'Reilly's end. Did not get it from O'Reilly's anyhow as their prices are double what anyone else is selling for.
dear Jon, i just want to know how can refill the pump from hidraulic direction from malibu 2005, in order to give it manteniance, really i have search on motor compartiment and under the motor too, but nathing, could you pleas help me to know where can i find it? i have 3 years whit my malibu 2005 and never, never have give it manteniance to hidraulic refill,, i hope you can understand my message, thank you so much, regards, Arthur.
You need to get the computer recalibrated. Most likely you will need to take it to a dealer or other full service shop and they'll have the tool needed to recalibrate the cars computer
@@friday1322 I did the repair and didn't even take it in to get it recalibrated. It pulls a little to the right but nothing crazy. It's a very easy fix man, make sure you get big snap ring pliers though. I always try to make cars go for as long as I can.
BE AWARE there are bad parts out there even brand new GM certificated ones. IF after installing, your cars steering wheel is turning all the way to one side there is a good chance you received a bad part, or it was installed incorrectly. Parts get damaged in shipping, pins get pulled when they shouldn't be, etc. Use a reputable seller who will work with you in returning a bad part if you receive one.
Exact situation happened to me about an hour ago but GM part i had the whole column out tho and dont know if i screwd something up there clocking wise or what guess ima find out monday what was your fix another sensor ? scan tool also says conditions not meet for calibration all lights are out and have assist but car pulls right harder to turn wheel left then it is right thanks for any info you may have
I replaced electric power steering motor and torque sensor as soon as I start the engine the wheel turns all the way to the right. Is this a bad part or because it has not been hooked up to a bi directional scan tool and calibrated?
@@juanpla4979 If it's saying that it can't calibrate, then my guess would be a bad part. As long as you pull that little pin after the sensor is fully in place, it shouldn't be that you did something wrong. The bad one I had would also not calibrate once installed, what you're describing sounds exactly like my experience. I returned it and replaced it with a different one that worked great.
@@ianrichard805 Could be either calibration or a bad sensor from my experience, if the scan tool can not communicate and calibrate the sensor, then it's likely a bad sensor.
@@jonsgarage2882 I had to reinstall old motor module and kept the gm torque sensor I originally installed used snap on scanner for calibration and took right away I think my autel scanner software led me down a rabbit hole
