It’s relaxing in the sense that you’re not even trying to win (in a short timeframe anyway) it’s the end goal yes, but at this point you’re just trying to kill time and maybe make progress. As someone who occasionally plays Geometry Dash, I barely get frustrated anymore even on rage games. If I fail I fail, the attempt itself counts towards progress for me rather than viewing where I failed as a setback. You eventually learn to stop thinking about how things could’ve been to instead focus more on getting good enough to beat it, the fails were from a lack of skill but I won’t beat myself up over it, I’d acknowledge that weakness and just throw attempts at it until I get it, and each one brings me just that little bit closer to finishing the game/level. As long as I keep that in mind, it no longer feels like the past hour or so was wasted if you choke somewhere. Edit: I occasionally play Geometry Dash: Subzero when I’m bored, keep in mind that it’s catered to *new* players and the first level took me about 240+ attempts for completion, and 530+ attempts to get past halfway on the final level. They weren’t lying when they said it was for new players because I’ve seen people throw 500k attempts at levels and I could never. The fanbase is on another level of crazy, even the casual players are willing to throw a good 1000+ attempts at something.
As someone whose daily life & crappy jobs feel like a grueling endeavor: It astounds me how people who have more free time & less stress INTENTIONALLY seek out games designed to consume tons of your time & attention on mundane "simple" mechanics. I just wish people would volunteer more to spend their excess time helping others. The little bits of time I am able to spend volunteering are often spent wondering why all the people in the world who have excess free time & money LOVE to post about how they waste those resources on stuff like meaningless games. Don't get me wrong, I think Penny does really entertaining work. But still. And streaming is literally their job. And you for some reason decided to imply that it's meaningless and could be spent better. I mean you're morning coffe could be a waste of time and resources. Your free time you spend to calm down and relax, all the time you sleep more than 8 hours per day - all of that could be spent better. @@clawcakes2 I enjoy that the idea of Sonic playing UNO is pervasive. It makes sense though, it's literally the only card game that at least comes close to his playstyle of "as fast as possible".
I hope that in future games Sage ends up being the good influence Eggman needs to mellow out a bit and not obsess over conquering the world so much. This game proved he can be a powerful ally when he and Sonic are faced with a common enemy.
I think without the bittersweet end the main (launch) story has, this alternate ending wouldn’t be as effective. By going through all the hardships of this extra story, you essentially get to save Sage from a fate she’s calculated millions of times over that states directly that she will not make it back. By pulling off what she claims is an improbable outcome, you’ve managed to let her go home safe with her father. For 10 months, Sage’s story ended on an upsetting note, but now you can decide her fate for the infinitely better. Brilliant.
I wouldn't say it ended on an upsetting note, as the post-credits reveal Eggman managed to retrieve her. Though Ian said he only managed to resurrect "a part of her", whatever that means. Still, it's nice to see Sage go home with her "Father". Also, Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog. Canonicity is questionable, yes, but Sage is alive in that game. She's got a "Let's Go, Dad" shirt (which she made for herself and Metal) and I think Eggman comments on turning the group into toys for Sage to play with.
Penny's positivity during this stream was down right infectious! This update has been getting pretty mixed opinions so far from fans so its honestly refreshing seeing someone genuinely having this much of a great time with a Sonic game again.
I’d say less “mixed”, and more “polarising” So many people have been praising this update like it’s the second coming of Christ, and others have been treating it like it tarnished the reputation of Sonic harder than Sonic 2006, Rise of Lyric, and Forces combined. I am in the middle of that, more so leaning to the positive, but there are problems I have, both with the main game and with Update 3.
everyone is entitled to receiving the best out of the products they buy, but its weird to see people expecting an entire game's worth of improvements for a free update with barely any budget sure theres very valid criticism, but it also feels like sonic fans dont play any other games to understand how simple content updates work

That's a actually a really good point! I was also wondering why so much focus on the cards and that explanation makes sense. Especially after that cutscene where Amy says that she can't use her hammer. Aside from the fire effect Knuckles attacks are things he could do in any other game and the Cyclone can come back whenever they feel like (though it wouldn't appear like this), but this was possible their last chance in a while to make Amy a magical girl and they took it. Now i want a fic of Tails and Amy's reaction to finding out their new cyberpowers
In case anyone was wondering, Penny spent a total of 39 minutes and 30 seconds in the very first cyberspace. This doesn’t even include time spent in menus and bits and it is almost equal to the amount of time she spent playing Amy.

Sonic’s grip strength is absolutely crazy, not just in this game but in multiple games he’s depicted as being able to hold himself on a flying object with one hand for quite awhile before his grip fails. What drugs is he taking
The new final boss was very cool and cinematic, however I think it would have really benefited from some hint dialogue like in past Sonic games. One of Sonic's friends could have said "It keeps regenerating, find a way to sever the link!" Or Eggman could have said "It's down, try to dislodge the cannon from its back!" The fight felt aimless and confusing without any sort of guidence, in my opinion. I also would have loved more background dialogue from The End and Sonic's friends in general. I'm still just glad that Sonic feels right again after many years.💙

Feeling so validated with Penny's method of clearing the second trial in the endless parry cycle, I've been feeling like a weirdo not seeing others do it the way I did it. Throughout the trials, though, I love that sense of figuring out a game plan and executing/optimizing it until it succeeds. The second trial and fifth trial especially when it comes to optimizing, as rough as they can be, are so cool
What's weirder is that people says it's exploiting/abusing mechanic... the hell it is. I didn't do it the first time, yet I call that technique genius.
Blew my mind when i saw it. I think what throws me off is that the game says you have the cyloop as the only available skill. Meaning you have to use it. I just think a better hint or even an example would solve the problem.
I made it way harder on myself by cylooping (since I didn't know you could still parry) and trying to use the stomp since it does the most burst damage. I did it but gods I spent so much time on it
the way they word it does erroneously imply you ought to be using cyloop like...I don't like accusing games of gaslighting people, but in that specific instance, for most people playing with baby brain "do what the game tells me too" instincts, I feel like it applies just fine I think if they said at the outset that all these challenges are meant to force you to get better at parrying, or just didn't say anything at all, it'd be less bleugh
Honestly once you have Knuckles's perma-glide unlocked, his gameplay becomes way more enjoyable. Superman flying across the island and cheating your way to the top of puzzles is a blast. Same with combining infinite boost with Tails's cyclone dash, except Tails is even better because you can adjust your altitude
Tails can straight up fly into vertical death planes that are so far away from the island that they're not supposed to be reachable. This is the most busted that he's ever been, and that's saying a lot considering what S3&K allowed him to do with the Super Emeralds.
Amy can be almost as broken as Knuckles: at full jump momentum, with a timed boost-and-jump she can float for just about as long and as far as Knuckles’ normal glide. Add on maxed speed and she floats even farther. Still not as busted as Tails or Knuckles, but it still means all of Sonic’s friends here only have the sky as the limit.
honestly love penny's idea of chillin' in a doctor's office right after the master king koco trial. something about it feels so... right. being able to just explore a tiny room and take a breather. explain it away with "cyberspace lol" like every other weird thing in the game
10 hours of Penny? Hell yeah! It's so great to be back on the Starfall Islands, and for this DLC to finally be out. It's so awesome, and I love Sonic's friend's abilities. I'm glad she enjoyed it so much.
Welcome to Sonic goes SS2, does Gogeta stance, a raging demon, catches a death ball, get hit out of SS2 to SS1, to normal sonic, and power back up to SS2, does a super ki explosion inside a gundam railgun, and eggman shot him out like omega beam to obliterate a living planet.
Penny is the only streamer I’ve seen do the snake strat so far. Every chat has tried to recommend it and everyone else beat it, but no one has actually done it except her. Great job penny!

It is a bit jarring seeing how much her cards have been incorporated so much, but I think it’s a nice way to give Amy some more interesting moves. And ANYTHING is a step up from 06 Amy, so I’ll happily accept it :)
Im honestly reallyhappy with Amy's character evolution. I like to think that, because of her reason to adventure being staying close to sonic. Now that she has had time to think about her role and reason. She starts to use them again, seeing use in them again. While still having her hammer
Could be cool to see her return with magic after learning it from some witch. Maybe she could even make conjurations of her hammer. I'd also love to see her idealogy based around freedom and helping people come out of dark parts of their lives
The farthest I got on hard was 30 rings by the time I reached the third Titan. Then I gave up and went to normal and even then, just barely beat it with 3 rings left
I couldn't even do it on easy. Wyvern is not designed to be fought under those conditions and they don't even give us any checkpoints as an incentive to actually grind out that particular fight.
I think it's a better final boss overall but I really miss the "what can one mote of golden light do" line from The End. Also, The End being this terrifying, eldritch personification of evil or whatever and just having like...a big pipe that comes out and pumps evil power-up goo into something is kinda goofy lol
Personally, I think the best way to do it would have had The End's speech from the original ending play during the first phase of the fight before the lyrics come in. Basically, during the first phase, it overrides the usual lyrics to show how powerful it is but once Sonic gains the upper hand, the lyrics come in and The End is silent as it's lost control of the fight.
@@Mekkanos1 See, the problem with that imo is that it takes away something I really appreciated which is that like any good cosmic horror, it's a victory that doesn't feel like one. The End makes it clear that even if you win here, all you've really done is put off the inevitable and even then by the skin of your teeth. The way it plays out here it comes across more like your typical Sonic victory, which is nice and all but it loses something for me.
@@wittyreviewer Yeah, I get what you mean. Perhaps, they could have had it say one last thing before exploding like "This form falls but know this: you have only delayed The End." I think that's a pretty good compromise, still having an epic victory while still being ominous.
The End's lines are cool and all, but i feel in the original ending the eldritch horror thing still gets undermined by the fact that you beat it in an optional fight with a recreation of an arcade game. At least that's how it was for me, cool concept, meh execution.
The fact that they brought back playing as other characters and put effort into making their playstyles unique (as well as the return of the Cyclone) only further convinces me that Adventure 3 is at the very least on a whiteboard somewhere in the Sonic Team offices

I actually loved the original The End fight and ending, and was worried it was all going away. Turns out The Final Horizon is basically Sonic Frontiers' EX mode, and a pretty good one at that! I ended up enjoying this update, but I'm still glad it's a "what if" scenario instead of a replacement for the normal ending. EX modes should come back in future Sonic games imo.

Just to be clear, the new ending is the canonical one. Sage survives either way as you see in the original's post-credits scene, so they made it quite easy for themselves to have both endings make sense, but it was said that the new ending overwrites the old one. That being said, like Penny stated, these two endings are like two halves of a whole. The new ending has more meaning if you know how the original ending went.
I really enjoyed my time with the update, but all the discussion around it is really souring my mood on it. It feels like we’re living through the bad ending where sonic frontiers wasn’t generally perceived well. After frontiers came out it was kinda peaceful in the sonic community for a while, and now this discourse has brought us all back to square one.
I feel it's mainly because of the quality of the update. Yes, they spent all this time pumping out new content and it's very appreciated but it all feels half baked. The bugs and what not are still in the game, and the dlc has it's own problems that bring the quality down a bit.

However, if you realize the discussion, it's the *difficulty* being discussed, not the characters. It's generally well agreed that people enjoy playing the characters, there's a couple kinks here and there, but a rock solid start. It being a free update doesn't excuse anything, it's just a get out of jail free card of proper discussion. Again, I love the game to bits! But the difficulty is something that needs to be addressed, and hopefully given a small tug back.

4:49:27 Frontiers is strange in that it only lets you stomp ONCE without touching the ground again. Because Penny stomped into the spring, the game wouldn't let her do a stomp landing. The second time, she just homing attacked the spring so the stomp was available. It's a little stupid that it does that if you ask me...

The Sonic X vibes in the entire game are heavy. The entire story line of an alien race leaving their planet and finding refuge on Sonic’s planet down to either sage sacrificing herself like Cosmo in the original ending or Sonic being fired out of a canon to destroy a planet in the true ending - I’m here for it.
Honestly a lot of the boss designs to me look like stuff from Neon Genies Evangelion, more specifically a mix of the EVA units and the Angles, along with the face of the hybrid ones from the End of Evangelion Movie.
I know you said there was no reason to use it, but I have seen someone use the drop dash combined with both spin dash and the boost to pull some crazy movement manuvers up one of the Towers.
While the same effect applies to all three of the themes, Knuckles' theme especially feels like they made a banger A loop planning on making a second part and just didnt have the time for it somehow. I think its simply because the lyrics are a little too active and ironically punchy to ignore.
God Sonic sounds even deeper than base game somehow, they really are making him sound like Chris Redfield. Hopefully they don't make him go all the way down to Batman or else things are going to sound absurd... unless of course they had him do an extremely gravely version of his Batman voice... for WEREHOG.
The Babylon Rogues being mentioned makes me believe that Sega views all the Sonic Games (Good and Bad) as part of one big family. If the Sonic x Shadow generations trailer taught me anything, they even include Shadow the Hedgehog's Edgelord game. SEGA; We're one big happy family....that includes you too Shadow! i managed to catch the second stream live! i had to leave right around when penny was getting to trial 5 and let me tell you the laugh i laughed when i checked the stream next morning and saw a 7 hour recording time after leaving at 4 hours.
I do have a little headcanon that Cyber Super Sonic has gray eyes because he is literally going blind from the energy, so I personally like to think that he couldn't have aimed himself, and wouldn't have beat The End without Eggman shooting him out. Just my headcanon though !

@@clawcakes2 I enjoy that the idea of Sonic playing UNO is pervasive. It makes sense though, it's literally the only card game that at least comes close to his playstyle of "as fast as possible".
I hope that in future games Sage ends up being the good influence Eggman needs to mellow out a bit and not obsess over conquering the world so much. This game proved he can be a powerful ally when he and Sonic are faced with a common enemy.

I think without the bittersweet end the main (launch) story has, this alternate ending wouldn’t be as effective. By going through all the hardships of this extra story, you essentially get to save Sage from a fate she’s calculated millions of times over that states directly that she will not make it back. By pulling off what she claims is an improbable outcome, you’ve managed to let her go home safe with her father. For 10 months, Sage’s story ended on an upsetting note, but now you can decide her fate for the infinitely better. Brilliant.

I wouldn't say it ended on an upsetting note, as the post-credits reveal Eggman managed to retrieve her. Though Ian said he only managed to resurrect "a part of her", whatever that means. Still, it's nice to see Sage go home with her "Father".
Also, Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog. Canonicity is questionable, yes, but Sage is alive in that game. She's got a "Let's Go, Dad" shirt (which she made for herself and Metal) and I think Eggman comments on turning the group into toys for Sage to play with.

Penny's positivity during this stream was down right infectious! This update has been getting pretty mixed opinions so far from fans so its honestly refreshing seeing someone genuinely having this much of a great time with a Sonic game again.

So many people have been praising this update like it’s the second coming of Christ, and others have been treating it like it tarnished the reputation of Sonic harder than Sonic 2006, Rise of Lyric, and Forces combined.

That's a actually a really good point! I was also wondering why so much focus on the cards and that explanation makes sense. Especially after that cutscene where Amy says that she can't use her hammer. Aside from the fire effect Knuckles attacks are things he could do in any other game and the Cyclone can come back whenever they feel like (though it wouldn't appear like this), but this was possible their last chance in a while to make Amy a magical girl and they took it.

The new final boss was very cool and cinematic, however I think it would have really benefited from some hint dialogue like in past Sonic games. One of Sonic's friends could have said "It keeps regenerating, find a way to sever the link!" Or Eggman could have said "It's down, try to dislodge the cannon from its back!" The fight felt aimless and confusing without any sort of guidence, in my opinion. I also would have loved more background dialogue from The End and Sonic's friends in general. I'm still just glad that Sonic feels right again after many years.💙

Feeling so validated with Penny's method of clearing the second trial in the endless parry cycle, I've been feeling like a weirdo not seeing others do it the way I did it. Throughout the trials, though, I love that sense of figuring out a game plan and executing/optimizing it until it succeeds. The second trial and fifth trial especially when it comes to optimizing, as rough as they can be, are so cool
What's weirder is that people says it's exploiting/abusing mechanic... the hell it is. I didn't do it the first time, yet I call that technique genius.

like...I don't like accusing games of gaslighting people, but in that specific instance, for most people playing with baby brain "do what the game tells me too" instincts, I feel like it applies just fine
I think if they said at the outset that all these challenges are meant to force you to get better at parrying, or just didn't say anything at all, it'd be less bleugh
Honestly once you have Knuckles's perma-glide unlocked, his gameplay becomes way more enjoyable. Superman flying across the island and cheating your way to the top of puzzles is a blast. Same with combining infinite boost with Tails's cyclone dash, except Tails is even better because you can adjust your altitude
Tails can straight up fly into vertical death planes that are so far away from the island that they're not supposed to be reachable. This is the most busted that he's ever been, and that's saying a lot considering what S3&K allowed him to do with the Super Emeralds.
Amy can be almost as broken as Knuckles: at full jump momentum, with a timed boost-and-jump she can float for just about as long and as far as Knuckles’ normal glide. Add on maxed speed and she floats even farther. Still not as busted as Tails or Knuckles, but it still means all of Sonic’s friends here only have the sky as the limit.
honestly love penny's idea of chillin' in a doctor's office right after the master king koco trial. something about it feels so... right. being able to just explore a tiny room and take a breather. explain it away with "cyberspace lol" like every other weird thing in the game

The farthest I got on hard was 30 rings by the time I reached the third Titan. Then I gave up and went to normal and even then, just barely beat it with 3 rings left
I couldn't even do it on easy. Wyvern is not designed to be fought under those conditions and they don't even give us any checkpoints as an incentive to actually grind out that particular fight.

That's why I say I honestly prefer the original ending. Like, maybe have this fight and then take it to space to do the rest?
Personally, I think the best way to do it would have had The End's speech from the original ending play during the first phase of the fight before the lyrics come in. Basically, during the first phase, it overrides the usual lyrics to show how powerful it is but once Sonic gains the upper hand, the lyrics come in and The End is silent as it's lost control of the fight.
@@Mekkanos1 See, the problem with that imo is that it takes away something I really appreciated which is that like any good cosmic horror, it's a victory that doesn't feel like one. The End makes it clear that even if you win here, all you've really done is put off the inevitable and even then by the skin of your teeth. The way it plays out here it comes across more like your typical Sonic victory, which is nice and all but it loses something for me.
@@wittyreviewer Yeah, I get what you mean. Perhaps, they could have had it say one last thing before exploding like "This form falls but know this: you have only delayed The End." I think that's a pretty good compromise, still having an epic victory while still being ominous.
The End's lines are cool and all, but i feel in the original ending the eldritch horror thing still gets undermined by the fact that you beat it in an optional fight with a recreation of an arcade game. At least that's how it was for me, cool concept, meh execution.
The fact that they brought back playing as other characters and put effort into making their playstyles unique (as well as the return of the Cyclone) only further convinces me that Adventure 3 is at the very least on a whiteboard somewhere in the Sonic Team offices
Also hearing Penny say that she finds Getting Over It relaxing is equal parts enlightened and psychopathic

I actually loved the original The End fight and ending, and was worried it was all going away. Turns out The Final Horizon is basically Sonic Frontiers' EX mode, and a pretty good one at that! I ended up enjoying this update, but I'm still glad it's a "what if" scenario instead of a replacement for the normal ending. EX modes should come back in future Sonic games imo.

Just to be clear, the new ending is the canonical one. Sage survives either way as you see in the original's post-credits scene, so they made it quite easy for themselves to have both endings make sense, but it was said that the new ending overwrites the old one.
That being said, like Penny stated, these two endings are like two halves of a whole. The new ending has more meaning if you know how the original ending went.
I really enjoyed my time with the update, but all the discussion around it is really souring my mood on it. It feels like we’re living through the bad ending where sonic frontiers wasn’t generally perceived well. After frontiers came out it was kinda peaceful in the sonic community for a while, and now this discourse has brought us all back to square one.
I feel it's mainly because of the quality of the update. Yes, they spent all this time pumping out new content and it's very appreciated but it all feels half baked. The bugs and what not are still in the game, and the dlc has it's own problems that bring the quality down a bit.

However, if you realize the discussion, it's the *difficulty* being discussed, not the characters. It's generally well agreed that people enjoy playing the characters, there's a couple kinks here and there, but a rock solid start. It being a free update doesn't excuse anything, it's just a get out of jail free card of proper discussion. Again, I love the game to bits! But the difficulty is something that needs to be addressed, and hopefully given a small tug back.

It's been 15 years since they used those characters, obviously Sonic is more polished that them and they make them in like a year or so. I just hope for the next game they bring them back more polished and with more combat abilities.

The Sonic X vibes in the entire game are heavy. The entire story line of an alien race leaving their planet and finding refuge on Sonic’s planet down to either sage sacrificing herself like Cosmo in the original ending or Sonic being fired out of a canon to destroy a planet in the true ending - I’m here for it.
Honestly a lot of the boss designs to me look like stuff from Neon Genies Evangelion, more specifically a mix of the EVA units and the Angles, along with the face of the hybrid ones from the End of Evangelion Movie.

I know you said there was no reason to use it, but I have seen someone use the drop dash combined with both spin dash and the boost to pull some crazy movement manuvers up one of the Towers.
This was so much fun because of your reactions and your determination.
While the same effect applies to all three of the themes, Knuckles' theme especially feels like they made a banger A loop planning on making a second part and just didnt have the time for it somehow. I think its simply because the lyrics are a little too active and ironically punchy to ignore.

God Sonic sounds even deeper than base game somehow, they really are making him sound like Chris Redfield. Hopefully they don't make him go all the way down to Batman or else things are going to sound absurd... unless of course they had him do an extremely gravely version of his Batman voice... for WEREHOG.

i managed to catch the second stream live! i had to leave right around when penny was getting to trial 5 and let me tell you the laugh i laughed when i checked the stream next morning and saw a 7 hour recording time after leaving at 4 hours.
I feel like having Eggman shoot Sonic at the moon instead of Sonic just flying up there himself was a deliberate decision
I do have a little headcanon that Cyber Super Sonic has gray eyes because he is literally going blind from the energy, so I personally like to think that he couldn't have aimed himself, and wouldn't have beat The End without Eggman shooting him out.
Just my headcanon though !
