i gotta say the implications of sonic only becoming funny and snarky when amy was freed has character implications that are VERY interesting to think about i think. not in like a shippy way, but just. man, sonic. sonic.
It sounds like when he doesn’t have anyone to be a funny man to, he’s a lot less funny. He seems to jump at the opportunity to make a funny comment to A Certain Mysterious Disembodied Voice and… that’s it. And emotionless robots don’t make for good sources of banter. In short he strikes me as a performative man. Not deceptive, no, his enthusiasm and confidence come from others and it’s as real as it gets. He just… doesn’t really have it in him to keep it up when nobody is there to do it to or with. Like trying to be a stand up comedian to an empty auditorium, it feels hollow to maintain his energy, so he doesn’t. And none of this is even to MENTION the fact that he’s probably genuinely concerned that he may never see any of his friends again. Once he finds one of them he’s like “oh good the others are probably somewhere too” and gets his shine back. It’s interesting to see him like this.
@@Somerandomjingleberry oh yeah, that makes sense. Idk if he does it in this part, but in part 2 of Penny's playthrough, you can hear Sonic snicker at the enemy robots occasionally. Penny points it out when he does it.
I remember making a school presentation about the timeline of every mainline sonic game and what it meant for future sonic. I argued that after the immense failure of Sonic Boom and Sonic Forces, Sonic team would be left without room for innovation. By the time I gave the presentation the Game Awards had already just barely happened and I was allowed to excitedly talk to my classmates about how I'd been wrong and Sonic Team was doing something brand new for the franchise. How if they were given enough time and resources to work on this new title that it could really become a staple for Sonic. I'm glad it's measuring up.
I like the models they made for the fish/creatures Sonic can catch. Very pretty animals! Also like that instead of holding the dart frog, he holds it up with the line! Small details my beloved
Seeing Penny keep trying to complete the talk to Amy prompt and never getting to it is the funniest shit. It took me a while to understand that a lot of the dialogue was optional when I was playing, so like UNDERSTANDABLE but also HEHEHEHE
I won't blame anyone getting stumped by that puzzle. It's only after I saw it on other people's video before I figured out the key to solving that puzzle. The answer was actually very simple, yet at the same time very obscured in the heat of the moment
@@Handepsilon oh for real. I’m playing through the game again and it definitely took less time than it did last time to do that puzzle. I just find it incredibly comical how long it took Penny as she slowly devolved into deep frustration and confusion
''You go in there, you do your work, you don't show that shit to anyone, you get your paycheck and you get the fuck outta there!!'' - Penny, you're far too funny xD
so i'm gonna be honest, up until recently, i never even TOUCHED the comics, but when frontiers was announced to be written by ian flynn, i knew he was already someone who worked basically strictly on story of sonic, and had high hopes. when i beat frontiers, i was curious about the comics, seeing if he has done anything like this then. after reading the comics, especially the metal virus arc, i understand the hype.
Having Kellin Quinn for this soundtrack, makes it so fucking amazing because Sonic Team is like "yeah, we're going for a new generation of Sonic. We've been trying to make the series more gritty and mature for years but its never quite hit, but I think the story we've crafted this time is what we've been trying to do all along, and to reward y'all for sticking with us into this new generation, have the hardest soundtrack we've ever made"
I actually like the new Sonic voice. As someone who has casually dipped in and out of the Sonic-sphere, it's nice to have a more "downtime" voice outside of the action. Makes him feel a tad less cartoonish. I get why those who are used to the voice and see it as a staple and can divorce it from hampering the solemn tone, however.
I am so glad you streamed this game! I am definitely the type of person who needs a familiar streamer/TH-camr to like hold my hand through an unfamiliar game. Just someone I’m comfortable with to show me through the unknowns of a new game. So when I looked at all my usual go-to people I watch and saw they didn’t play it I felt a little disheartened. But! But but but! I got recommended this channel and freaked cause I have watched the fan dubs for the sonic games and I kinda knew that you streamed but I never fully registered it until TH-cam told me to watch this video! I didn’t know about this channel specifically so you have definitely gained a new fan today! Thanks for playing!
This is the first SnapCube stream that Ive seen and I can confidently confirm that: 1. She definitely has ADD, and the random shenanigans, voice acting, and some legit critique is pefectly mixed to keep me engaged with no problem. 2. I would sacrifice myself to see a chaotic collaboration with Shenpai "Careful? Where's the fun in that?" 3. Im not the only crazy one for spending 5 hours chilling with Big. "I could do this all day." And 4. This game is just begging to be climbed! Cant wait for more, keep up the awesome work.
I'm watching this vod after I already beat the game, but GOD DAMN, your excitement is contagious! It's like my little heart was time warped back to release day!
It was driving me crazy trying to remember where I'd heard that announcer voice before and I realized, it's the same voice from Zero Escape Virtues Last Reward In case anyone also recognises it but doesn't know why, it's Cindy Robinson, she's credited as Amy and I'm so sure she's doing the voice that keeps talking to Sonic
so i have fairly severe audio processing disorder, and so far my biggest issue with this game (ive had many, but this is the only that causes me physical PAIN) is the way the audio distorts when boosting in the cyberspace stages. the way it twists and sounds like a submerged speaker actually did make me throw up earlier
Cyberspace started to click for me a few hours in. It's definitely weird as you said, Penny, especially placing it next to Generations and even Forces, but if you're able to overcome that hurdle these are decent side missions at worst.
I really like how the boost got nerfed, it honestly makes it more fun when it's slower and doesn't kill enemies just by touching them I just wish the S ranks took actual effort to get instead of getting most in 1 or 2 tries 1-2 Cyberspace was actually really satisfying getting that S rank after like 45 min of attempts I wish more were like that (except like... not 45 min hard. more like 20 min hard)
Unlike a lotta the folks I know, I fucking LOVE the deeper voice, like I love basically every Sonic voice but the deeper voice REALLY got me into the mode of the game when I first heard it.
I have a theory as to why the controls in forces and the cyberspace levels feel off. Keep in mind, I'm not a developer or modder or anything like that, this is just what I think based on some prior knowledge. So, I don't remember where I heard this, but I remember seeing a tweet that said there were 2 different branches of the hedgehog engine. The first is the one from unleashed. This is the one that has the drift on the triggers. Sonic can airboost after a jump,, and also uses rings to fill his boost meter. For Colors, which was exclusive to the wii, they had to rework the controls to work on a wii remote, as well as a GameCube controller with only one bumper. In colors, sonic will snap to one of eight directions, instead of having full analog rotation. The drift is no longer on the triggers, instead you have drift sections where you use the stick. The airboos was removed, and in its place, sonic gained a double jump. Wisps were also introduced as powerups, so now instead of gathering rings to fill the boost, sonic collects wisp capsules. The Quickstep was also changed, but that's not as important as the other changes. So now, we have the unleashed engine (360/ps3) and the colors engine (wii) For generations, they went back to the unleashed engine and refined the gameplay. You still have the drift, airboost, Quickstep, and full analog movement. When Sega made sonic lost world, instead of building on top of generations, they used colors as a base. Why? Because lost world was on the wii u. The wii u is basically a more powerful wii, so it makes sense that they would reuse the colors wii engine instead of porting the unleashed 360 engine. In lost world, sonic no longer has a boost. He also can't accelerate to top speed by holding forward anymore. Instead, you now have a run button. Sonic still snaps to eight directions, can't drift or Quickstep, has a double jump,, and uses wisps as powerups. For sonic forces, they continued to work on the colors/lost world engine. Sonic moves in eight directions, double jumps, and the wisps are powerups (reworked to be for the avatar). However, sonic feels weird to control. When moving forward, he starts slow, and instead of slowly ramping up to full speed, he snaps from low speed to high speed. Because lost world wasn't a boost game and the engine was reworked to use a run button, they had to remove the run button somehow. Here's what I think they did. Instead of removing the run function completely, they just removed the button press. So now, when sonic accelerates to top speed, the run button triggered, and sonic accelerates immediately to full speed. This could be the reason why sonic feels so off in the cyberspace levels, since they basically reused forces physics there. If I made any mistakes with this, or am just talking out of my ass, please correct me and I'll edit my comment. Hope this was a good explanation as to why forces and cyberspace feel off.
I’m watching this playthrough alongside another youtuber’s and it’s so funny seeing the contrasting opinions because they love the cyberspace levels and are breezing through them while penny seems to struggle
Thank you for this, I tried watching on Twitch and while I love to support you, getting 3 30 second long ads every 10 minutes on a shitty media player is the worst thing ever

I'm just now watching your playthrough cuz I wanted to play the game for myself first. Absolutely love it man, I'm so hyped and it's so nostalgic and the scaling is just awesome. I haven't been this excited about a game in forever :]]]]
3:20:00 everything Penny is saying about how Sonic feels in Cyberspace compared to the open Zone is true, it just doesn't feel good, and don't even get me started on how they handled drifting in one of the later Cyberspace lvls😭 you just have to play the game to understand what she's saying.
It feels like the optimal way to S-rank the drifting cyberspace level is to completely avoid the green boosters, jumping over them and only using Lightspeed dash to get thru their areas faster
Oh shit I didn't put together that Cyber Space was stitched together from Sonic's memories, I just thought Big was trapped there like everyone else but he just got to fish and chill out so he didn't really care lmao
Got this game on PC. I had some surprising trouble getting it to work that SEGA or whoever handled the Steam version will fix, but once I got in I was absolutely IN LOVE for the first time since perhaps I first experienced a Sonic game at all with Sonic Adventure 2: Battle (I was 7 at the time). I feel so vindicated after all these people telling me I was on "copium" for thinking this game would be at least passable after Sonic Forces, and the only thing preventing me from declaring this to be the best (official) Sonic game in recent years is the fact Sonic Mania exists. Yes, there are problems that prevent it from reaching TRUE perfection (and again, ensuring Sonic Mania is still the best recent-ish Sonic game), but it's thankfully to the point now where I REALLY have to nit-pick and focus on the negative to even acknowledge these flaws, and that's such a great feeling.

I know some people might be adverse to the voice acting in this game but I do really love it, the more chill and deeper voices totally fit the vibes of this game. As much as i love sonic's goofy regular voice, hearing him sound kinda tired and almost sick of all the crap he puts up with, idk, it tickles me.
"Uhh, yoOoO-"
I really disliked Sonic's voice at first, but after sitting through the whole game, it settle fine with me. I can get behind it.
@@Schnort that's how I felt too - at first it didn't quite seem like it fit, but after hearing it more I feel it actually fits pretty well.
@@MirrorHall_Clay
It makes me wonder how much time came between Forces and Frontiers. Is it enough time for the IDW comics to be canon?
it feels SO jarring at first, but then you slowly hear it more and see that yeah, this IS how sonic would sound here. the old voice is good too but it's very much a better fit for the iterations of sonic with zero chill over frontiers.

you gotta love irony
i gotta say the implications of sonic only becoming funny and snarky when amy was freed has character implications that are VERY interesting to think about i think. not in like a shippy way, but just. man, sonic. sonic.
Bro imagine character development in a Sonic game past 2008 :0
he's gotta be cool guy™ with the besties, i guess.
@@Somerandomjingleberry you. you get it EXACTLY.
Big gave you six tokens for the red can because, like Sonic, he is a staunch environmentalist and wants to keep the planet clean and healthy.

I love that a Sonic game without a character creator still manages to have sliders that people could spend a good half hour on.
I like the models they made for the fish/creatures Sonic can catch. Very pretty animals! Also like that instead of holding the dart frog, he holds it up with the line! Small details my beloved
Technically he has gloves, so it shouldn't hurt him, but still!
He holds every smaller fish up by the line though

I won't blame anyone getting stumped by that puzzle. It's only after I saw it on other people's video before I figured out the key to solving that puzzle.
The answer was actually very simple, yet at the same time very obscured in the heat of the moment
@@Handepsilon oh for real. I’m playing through the game again and it definitely took less time than it did last time to do that puzzle. I just find it incredibly comical how long it took Penny as she slowly devolved into deep frustration and confusion

TRUUUE
so i'm gonna be honest, up until recently, i never even TOUCHED the comics, but when frontiers was announced to be written by ian flynn, i knew he was already someone who worked basically strictly on story of sonic, and had high hopes. when i beat frontiers, i was curious about the comics, seeing if he has done anything like this then. after reading the comics, especially the metal virus arc, i understand the hype.
Sonic: "let's drink alcohol!"
Plane: Immediately starts to crash.
55:25 counterpoint, as someone with adhd: sure there’s a lot of things to draw my attention. but then I actually have to go and do them
Having Kellin Quinn for this soundtrack, makes it so fucking amazing because Sonic Team is like "yeah, we're going for a new generation of Sonic.
2:25:47 I love the way she keeps accidentally falling down and panicking, it's so funny
It’s cool how quickly you were able to imitate the new sonic voice
Funny thing is I forgot It was her first time Had to do a double take

Thanks for playing!
im just now realizing they probably wanted to have all the cutscenes in engine so the day/night cycle didnt get broken and look weird

2. I would sacrifice myself to see a chaotic collaboration with Shenpai
"Careful? Where's the fun in that?"
3. Im not the only crazy one for spending 5 hours chilling with Big.
"I could do this all day."
And 4.
This game is just begging to be climbed! Cant wait for more, keep up the awesome work.

so i have fairly severe audio processing disorder, and so far my biggest issue with this game (ive had many, but this is the only that causes me physical PAIN) is the way the audio distorts when boosting in the cyberspace stages. the way it twists and sounds like a submerged speaker actually did make me throw up earlier
Turning your audio settings from stereo to mono could help a bit. Maybe you've already done this, but I figured I would mention it.
If you play on pc you can install the mod manager and disable the audio distortion. I turned it off immediately cause i wanted to listen to the music
Penny: “I have to record a bug”
The bug: Sonic didn’t have any rings left
I just found out kellin quinn from sleeping with sirens is in a bunch of music in frontiers and the LAUGH i just had. i fucking love this game.
Cyberspace started to click for me a few hours in. It's definitely weird as you said, Penny, especially placing it next to Generations and even Forces, but if you're able to overcome that hurdle these are decent side missions at worst.
I really like how the boost got nerfed, it honestly makes it more fun when it's slower and doesn't kill enemies just by touching them
I just wish the S ranks took actual effort to get instead of getting most in 1 or 2 tries
1-2 Cyberspace was actually really satisfying getting that S rank after like 45 min of attempts I wish more were like that (except like... not 45 min hard. more like 20 min hard)
The 3D ones yeah, but I think the 2D ones are really bad.
@@nyahnyahson523 2D ones are definitely the weakest yeah.
So now, we have the unleashed engine (360/ps3) and the colors engine (wii)
For generations, they went back to the unleashed engine and refined the gameplay.
4:07:51: Of course the tin-can is worth more in the sonic universe. They actually care about the environment.
“You ever SEE how LOUD the sun is?”
